Fireglow Games has released a 127MB demo of forthcoming World War II strategy title Sudden Strike III: Arms for Victory.
The demo offers a lone single-player mission where players must use a US landing force to overrun coastal defences and sort out some Germans loitering inland.
And it's worth noting that the release of the demo on Friday was followed swiftly by a minor patch release on Fireglow's forum (direct file link) addressing what's described as a specific graphics problem.
Sudden Strike III is due out in Q4 2006, with a publisher still to be confirmed. See the official website for details.

Black Hole-developed PC RTS Warhammer: Mark of Chaos is marching to battle this autumn, but in the meantime we're being treated to new screenshots and footage - and information - from the forthcoming title.
The new media and details that have been released focus on the Empire, the human faction featuring in Mark of Chaos and "frontline defenders against the chaos invaders from the north", it says here. What the latest information amounts to is a fleshed-out explanation on several of the units attached to the Empire military power, and we've posted this information as received below...
The Jade Wizard unit
Jade Wizard: The Wizards of the Jade Order Study the Lore of Life that lies under the province of the Third Lore of Magic, which is called the Wind of Ghyran. Jade Wizards are, of all wizards, the most attuned to nature and the least likely to be found within the confines of cities. They love nature and living things. Their studies teach them about the harmony of nature and the balance between all living things. Because they are so closely tied to the power of nature their own powers tend to wax and wane with the seasons, being vigorous in the spring, most powerful in the summer, waning over the fall to become weakest over winter.
The Pistolier unit
Pistoliers: Pistoliers are nobles' sons who are not yet old or experienced enough to win their spurs as Knights. In battle, they outflank the enemy and disrupt its lines with sudden hit-and-run attacks. Being rather young and inexperienced, Pistoliers are inclined to be hot-headed and rather wild, bravely dashing into the jaws of danger where a more experienced warrior might bide his time. The armour and weapons carried by a Pistolier are provided by his family.
The Mounted Griffon unit
Mounted Griffon: These are wild and dangerous creatures that hunt from the tallest crags of the northern Worlds Edge Mountains. Brave adventurers seek out their high nests and steal their chicks to raise in captivity. Only in this way can a Griffon ever be made tame enough to allow anyone to ride it, and even then they are temperamental and ferocious beasts.
General Empire screenshot
Captains: Captains are seasoned heroes within the Empire army. Although rare, they can be seen riding upon griffons leading their men into battle. Tales of their heroic actions are well known throughout the Empire and they are often sought out because of this. Often leading regiments, the Captains inspire the men in combat and use their extensive knowledge of command skills to turn the tide of battle leading the Empire to victory. The Captain is easily spotted with elaborate armour and some of the finest weaponry.
The Warrior Priest unit
Warrior Priest: Sigmar is a warrior god, and his clergy are Warrior Priests. Sigmar, in His divine all-seeing wisdom, knows that there are many unseen and supernatural evils and horrors, which beset mankind, and so channels His own divine power through His Chosen priests. The soldiers of the Empire, trusting in their faith, can withstand and turn back the tide of enemies that assail them, needing only to hear the priests reciting the Deus Sigmar to inspire them to heroism. But it befalls the Priests to contend with the foe on the spiritual and magical planes and this they do with prayers and invocations, almost equal in potency to the spells of Wizards, and with the strength of their unflinching minds.
We're promised that Warhammer: Mark of Chaos will offer epic real-time strategy battles while staying faithful to Games Workshop's fantasy universe.

Rome: Total War expansion Alexander set to get stand-alone PC release. Grapes and robed maidens not included
He came, he conquered, he's coming again - following victory as a digital download-only release, Sega is hailing the success of Rome: Total War's second expansion Alexander with its own boxed, stand-alone CD-ROM release on 1 September.
The acclaimed RTS add-on timewarps itself back to the time of the great war general, packing in a brand new campaign map and six bloody battles that cover Alexander's unification of Greece and his victories against Greek, Persian and Indian forces.
Each mission will unfold sequentially, and will be positively dribbling in historical accuracy. If that's enough for you, you also get the talented voice acting of Brian 'Booming Voice' Blessed, plus a brand new multiplayer tournament mode for online and LAN slaying.
Alexander was well received upon its digital release, and Sega's decision to give it a proper CD-ROM baptism is a result of a "huge number of Total War fans itching to play it but without the means to successfully download it."
So there you go. We have to say, we learnt more about Ancient Rome writing this story than we did in three years of GCSE history study! On second thoughts, though, that's because we did WWI....

Okay, hands up who wants a war? Those waving their mitts in the air should head to Codemasters' official Maelstrom site, where a pre-beta demo of 'frantic, destructive' sci-fi RTS Maelstrom sits waiting your pleasure in the 'Downloads' section.
The game releases exclusively for PC in October and is the result of a collaboration between the Brit compnay and Russian studio KDV Games (of Perimeter fame). It's being touted as the "most frantic, destructive, action-packed RTS game yet", and revolves around a three-way struggle for supremacy on a world ravaged by ecological disaster.
The demo features two missions - one playing as the technologically superior Ascension forces, who clone super-soldiers armed with transforming weaponry, and another featuring the invading alien forces Hai-Genti, who are using their malicious ways to nail a human Remnants base.
So, if all that tickles your fancy, you know exactly where to head. You can also peruse five screens from the demo missions right here.

According to an article on ZDNet, hackers are now targeting players of MMORPGs (mainly WOW), stealing their passwords, then selling their gold/equipment for money in the real world. Microsoft security development engineer Dave Weinstein warned developers of the new dangers their titles face at the company's annual Gamefest event."
From the article: "Online game accounts are already on sale in the black market next to stolen credit card accounts, fraudulent passports, fake work papers and other illegal items gathered by identity theft. In fact, some game accounts can be worth up to $10,000. 'For a lot of the customers out there, there is more store value on their MMO characters than there is on the credit card with which they pay for the account,' said Weinstein

Publisher Farlan Entertainment has admitted that Dark and Light, billed as "The Largest MMORPG You've Ever Seen!", isn't exactly The Best Put Together MMORPG You've Ever Seen.
Apparently the game "was released prematurely due to pressure from its investors and from the gaming community", according to an official statement. So now Farlan has unveiled a new initiative to "correct and improve operational aspects of Dark and Light."
They've signed a new deal with developer SnailGame to sort out the graphics, and they've set the D&L dev team to work improving the game's "technical challenges". Which means you can expect a better user interface, processing speed, battle progression and even "game immersion".
The good news for subscribers is that gameplay won't be interrupted while the improvements are being made. The even better news is that anyone who's already signed up will get to play free of charge for the next three months, during which period all user accounts and player credits will be maintained.
Dark and Light, which was released back in June, claims to feature the biggest gameworld ever created. The 13 kingdoms of Ganareth are spread across 40,000 kilometres of playing surface, and there are no loading times. Just a lot of bugs and stuff, unfortunately.
According to Farlan, the improvements should be complete within the next three months.

EA offers a single, but lovely-looking, new Command & Conquer screenshot
It's only one image, but this new Command & Conquer 3 screenshot is still enough to have RTS fans drooling into their laps as they contemplate the third instalment currently under construction at EA Los Angeles.
Fresh from the loins of EA's screenshot-spawning super-computer, this single image shows off a new piece in the C&C3 puzzle - a big, futuristic base. After a long, hard glance we've spotted power plants, a barracks, a war factory and a load of other classic C&C buildings. But where's that bunch of no-good chaps, Nod? Perhaps we'll get a look at them at Leipzig next week.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars should be out early next year.

August 14th, 2006, 18:25 Posted By: wraggster
World of Warcraft remains the world's favourite MMORPG, and with new expansion The Burning Crusade crunching in at a time yet to be disclosed - although we expect it to hit before the end of the year - fresh screens have invaded our Monday morning to whet your appetites further for the mighty WoW expansion.
Splendid though they are, they follow hot on the heels of news that Blizzard will be taking an apparently firm stance on raiding party size in the new expansion, with parties limited to 25 in instanced dungeons in an effort to eliminate arguments and conflict over Dragon Kill Points (or DKP) among the 40-odd characters currently permitted in raids in the game.
Controversial? Probably, but Blizzard has also revealed that there'll be plenty of smaller 25-man dungeons to accommodate the smaller raid size, including a biggie deep beneath Hellfire Citadel, where you'll be able to tackle the Pitlord Magatheredon whose contaminated blood fuels the curse of the Fel Orcs - who apparently siphon it off and swig it down like a particularly tasty pint.
Anyway, for the moment, feast your eyes on the new shots and we'll be bringing you more on The Burning Crusade from next week's Leipzig Games Show.

In an interview with World of Warcraft's Jeff Kaplan, Joystiq was able to gain some exclusive knowledge of what will be coming out for WoW's first expansion, The Burning Crusade. Check out these excerpts from the piece of just some of the new things players will be able to experience:
The PvP system is the first big change that our players have been waiting to hear about for a long time. ... The first is the arena combat system. You'll be able to join a team: 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5. There are two different modes you can play: One is called practice mode to hone your skills and the other is competitive mode, which is level 70 only.
We also want to get world PvP flowing again in WoW. A lot of players missed it, so every Outlands zone was designed with a major PvP objective in mind, so that's the second of the big PvP announcements.
The third thing is a revamp of the honor system. We're not going to do away with the honor system, but we're going to fix many of the flaws with it. The first thing players will really care about is that your honor points will no longer decay. Honor points will now become the like the PvP equivalent of a PvE experience. Honor points are just something you accumulate and then we'll introduce gear to the game so you can purchase that by spending your honor points.
We are actually lowering the raid cap which is now at 40. All the expansion raids will be 25 or less. The reason we are doing this is that we can still make the raids feel epic and difficult, but we just wanted to take some of the logistical headaches out of it. We're also introducing a 10-man raid, as well.

SPONG is the latest site to get down on it and quiz Will Wright about his upcoming uber-simulation, Spore. Did you know that Will used to refer to Spore as "Sim Everything"? A little trivia there, but of course the interview covers plenty more. They touch on the subject of release date, to which Will responds: "They’d probably kill me if I say anything about it. Next year." I'm guessing that at this point they've decided to go with the phrase that id Software made famous... "When it's ready!" Hang in there Spore Fans! Check out SPOnG's Interview while you wait.

If you fancy yourself as one of history's great commanders, then apart from rallying a few local hoodlums and shouting a call to arms at the local Tesco, Medieval II: Total War is about as close as you're going to get to tasting the bitter tang of war.
Fresh from the loins of Creative Assembly's squirting video machine, these new gameplay movies show off some of Med II's new gameplay features, including the wedding, assassin and evasion types.
As you can see from our fancy video player, assassin attempts come complete with their own hilarious video clips, showing the result of your sneaky hitman's attack. One such clip that comes to mind from our E3 sneak-peak, is a stealthy kill that involved a piano and a balcony. Obviously it's not all war and death in the new Total War, then.
Medieval II marches into battle this November.

The official website for Star Trek Legacy has been updated with news that all five captains from the five Star Trek series will be providing voice overs for the storyline.
Legacy covers all 40 years of Trek, the first game ever to do this: The Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. Storyline by renowned Star Trek writer D.C. Fontana. Voiceover provided by all five captains.
This is the first time that any Star Trek game has incorporated the five series in one game and the first to feature Captain Archer (Scot Bakula), Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew).

Acclaim is going to publish a free MMORPG developed by Dave Perry. From what we can tell, this isn't a joke. It's a truth. Games types eh? You just can't call their next move.
The game is called 2Moons and comes packed with the oh so Perry-penned tagline, "No mercy for the weak, no pity for the dying, no tears for the slain." As you may know, in August of last year, former Activision bigwig Howard Marks purchased rights to publish games under the Acclaim banner for a sum in the region of $100,000. Acclaim Games was formed by Marks early this year, aimed squarely at the MMO market for younger teenagers, or the nauseatingly-contrived demographic of 'tweens'.
It would appear that this title has little to do with this market and is being squarely aimed at adult games. 2Moons will be distributed free, aiming to recoup its development and hosting costs via the magic of advertising and microtransactions.
The project draws on the digital avatar market of Korea, taking GameHi's Sunghun Baek (who one SPOnG staffer accidentally had dinner with in a cheap hotel on the outskirts of Wakefield once) to partner Perry for the title. The press release in full reads:
Los Angeles (August 8, 2006)—Acclaim Games announces a free, totally brutal massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) designed specifically for adult gamers. Bearing the tagline: “No mercy for the weak, no pity for the dying, no tears for the slain.” 2Moons was created to be an easy to get into game set in an aggressive, dangerous and visually stunning world. This M-Rated title is targeted at those looking for an adrenaline soaked experience and aimed squarely at players looking to kick @$$ for free!
With 24-years of experience in the video game development business David Perry, whose latest Matrix Movie related game projects grossed over $300 million, hand picked his key creative partner, Mr. Sunghun Baek for the 2Moons project. Mr. Baek is the Designer and Chief Technical Officer for GameHi, a blockbuster game maker from Korea.
As Acclaim CEO Howard Marks explains “David is a superstar in the game world and his first MMORPG is going to change the ‘game.’”
“2Moons is a game that focuses on training players to become saviors in a world where any hope for survival was virtually nil,” says Perry. “Instead of wading through a lot of heavy back story, the game’s narrative is all about the individual’s journey as they grow to become a level 100+ warrior. And the arcade style fighting system in the game lets you dive right in and go hand to hand with some of the most impressive enemies in a massively multiplayer game yet.”
This collaboration of two leading game designers from either side of the planet, working on a game of this titanic scale, is hailed as visionary and very exciting. But perhaps the partnership’s most beneficial component for players is that Acclaim’s model is based on releasing full-price games for free. With no subscriptions, and no charge to download the game, it will be funded mostly by advertising--and (even more radically) the user will be allowed to turn off the in-game adverting if they choose. With Perry's approach, Acclaim is determined to offer truly free gameplay by creating a new kind of advertising model for the industry.
“I've been to Korea twice in the last few months and have met with a lot of very impressive talent.” Perry, who also sits on the Advisory board of the Game Developer Conference, said. “GameHi’s Chairman Mike Kim is extremely forward-thinking, and he really wants the Western gamers to experience the unbelievable work his teams do and I'm going to help him do just that.”
You may register immediately to be a member of the 2Moons closed beta (for free) at www.acclaim.com. Log on today and make sure you are one of the first in the world to experience this exciting new game! More information will become available in the coming months.

MMORPGs and game addiction. If you're suffering from dry eyes, headaches, back aches, erratic sleep patterns, it may be more than just your average hangover: according to Dr. Maressa Orzack, you could be suffering from video and computer game addiction. A clinical psychologist, Orzack is founder and coordinator of Computer Addiction Services at McLean Hospital in Newton, Mass., and is also an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. Computer Addiction Services is one of the few outpatient clinics in the U.S. that provides specific treatment for game addiction."

New Command & Conquer 3 screenshots hitting the DZ this morning in glorious style are giving us an eyeful of GDI action from the newest instalment in the veteran RTS series. While a little on the, ah, brown side, we have to say that these latest images deployed are still impressive beasts, revealing not only GDI base structures but also GDI combat operations in the field. Pass mince pies over the goods, uploaded to this here page.
The new screenshots have been accompanied by an EA in-house feature on the GDI which, similar to the recent feature on Tiberium, has been penned by C&C3's executive producer Mike Verdu. We've posted Verdu's words as received, below...
THE GLOBAL DEFENSE INITIATIVE (GDI)
By Mike Verdu, Executive Producer
"The Third Tiberium War in the Command & Conquer (C&C) series is upon us, and over the next few months we'll be taking the wraps off of the three factions, the world, and the story in Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. The fiction and universe development have been key for this game given our emphasis on delivering a great single player campaign and an epic story that is worthy of C&C. I'm excited that we can start sharing the details of what we've been working on all this time.
"With this feature we begin to explore the three factions of Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. We start with the Global Defense Initiative (GDI).
"GDI started as a secret military alliance of G8 nations - a treaty organization formed to contain Tiberium, reverse its spread, and fight the sinister Brotherhood of Nod, a terrorist organization that believed the otherworldly substance to be beneficial to mankind. Over time, power and sovereignty have been gradually ceded to GDI and the national identities of the participating countries have faded. In 2047 that process has reached its final stages: While there are still technically individual Member Nations, the reality is that GDI has become a unified political and military super-state. GDI is what might result if the G8 countries, the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and the member-states of NATO became a single nation state.
"GDI controls the only areas of the Earth that have not been significantly compromised by Tiberium infestation. The crystalline alien substance is slowly consuming the rest of the planet, causing an environmental cataclysm that has made 30% of the Earth uninhabitable and another 50% of the Earth's surface exceedingly unfriendly to civilization. GDI's home territories are known as "Blue Zones" since they are mostly clear of Tiberium and have been relatively untouched by war (in contrast to the ecologically ravaged and war-torn "Yellow Zones" and the Tiberium infested hellscapes designated as "Red Zones").
"In 2047, GDI keeps the Blue Zones peaceful while making periodic forays into the Yellow Zones to contain the spread of Tiberium, repair the environment, and improve the quality of life for the inhabitants there. For all its good intentions, GDI still struggles with the complexity of its own bureaucracy, as well as conflicting viewpoints on Tiberium. Some within GDI see the benefits of more aggressive exploitation of Tiberium, but most view it as an environmental plague and source of ultimate destruction.
"GDI's focus on Tiberium eradication in 2047 is a luxury. In the past, GDI has been locked in an epic struggle with a terrifying enemy - a secret society turned global superpower that has united most of the third world against GDI. Led by a charismatic sociopath called Kane, the Brotherhood of Nod preaches that Tiberium is the catalyst for the next stage of human evolution. Nod fanatics are doing everything they can to accelerate Tiberium infestation on all continents.
"GDI and Nod have been fighting each other for nearly half a century. The conflict has escalated into a full world war twice - the First Tiberium War (TWI) erupted in the second decade of the twenty-first century and that terrible war was followed by another worldwide firestorm a few years later.
"The Brotherhood of Nod has been very quiet for the last several years, and their leader hasn't been seen in a long time. This is highly atypical for Nod.
"Just as GDI is split over the uses of Tiberium, there are two points of view on Nod's current state: Some GDI intelligence analysts believe Nod is suffering from internal factional strife and is in the process of internal collapse. Others believe Nod is planning their biggest operation yet. If that is true, the preparations are happening very quietly.
"If Nod is indeed up to something, they will be facing a formidable adversary. GDI leaders have a state-of-the-art military machine at their command like nothing ever seen before. GDI is truly a military superpower.
"GDI forces are organized to allow decentralized operations in multiple theaters of war. GDI rapid deployment forces are able to move quickly, establish forward operating bases in all types of terrain, and project power using advanced all-weather weapon systems and highly trained troops.
"GDI's land forces include versatile armored vehicles like the Predator Main Battle Tank, the Mammoth heavy tank, the Guardian APC, and the fearsome Juggernaught mobile artillery unit. Their infantry is made up of fast-moving, lightly armored combat soldiers and the slower, but heavily armored Zone Troopers. Specialized units include the Special Forces Commando and the elite Sniper Teams.
"Aircraft deployed at GDI forward operating bases include the rocket-equipped VTOL Orca, the Firehawk fast attack jet, and the V-35 Ox VTOL transport.
"Support units for GDI operations provide unprecedented flexibility to its field commanders. The MCV serves as the mobile hub for a forward operating base. A versatile vehicle called the "Rig" can deploy into a repair base and aircraft landing pad, providing forward logistics to aircraft and armored units.
"GDI believes that it is the last, best hope for the future of humanity and deploys military force in the name of freedom, progress, and containment of the worst environmental disaster the world has ever seen. Their enemies don't see them quite in the same light... but that is the topic of another feature."

Top RPG developer BioWare has become the first company to license Simutronics' HeroEngine, which it will use to create the as-yet untitled MMO, which is the first game being worked on at the company's newly formed Austin Studio.
Considering that BioWare's past credits include Star Wars: KOTOR, Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate, it is safe to say that its first crack at an MMO will be much anticipated. Despite lacking a name (or any hint as to its storyline and universe), it is scheduled for release next year.
The deal underlines a recent change of tack for BioWare - although in the past, it has made its own engines, it licensed Epic's Unreal Engine 3 to form the basis of its much-anticipated Xbox 360 action-RPG Mass Effect. We'll keep you up to scratch with more details about the BioWare MMO as and when they emerge.

On this rather dreary and wet morning in the Big Smoke we've been copping an eyeful of Forces of Corruption - Petroglyph's Star Wars: Empire at War expansion - courtesy of new screenshots that have materialised. Check 'em out yourself, here on this page.
Due later this year, Forces of Corruption fleshes out the original RTS by offering a viewpoint of the Galactic Civil War from a 'corrupt' side, players assuming the role of criminal scoundrel and underworld villain Tyber Zann. Zann's route to success involves influencing other factions, stealing funds, slowing production and basically knocking Jabba the Hutt from his perch as Star Wars' scummiest scumbag.
The expansion features a wealth of new Star Wars RTS delights, including new land-tactical options, new hero characters - Luke Skywalker, for example - and new planet maps. Enjoy the screens.
