EA announces major facelift surgery for MMO daddy with Kingdom Reborn upgrade
Ultima Online is so old that it even makes us look young, yet it still continues to go strong - and EA has now announced that it will be treating the MMORPG godfather to a full face-lift with what we're labelling the 'extended expansion pack' Ultima Online: Kingdom Reborn.
Set to release in 2007, the pack will do much more than simply deliver new missions and content to the nine-year-old-game, as it's giving it a brand new graphics engine and a brand new 'state-of-the-art' interface too. The former is said to maintain the game's original perspective, while also dipping into the world of 3D-accelerated special effects. EA Mythic will find itself busy re-drawing more than 9000 pieces of art!
In addition to the ironed-out wrinkles, Kingdom Reborn will also include a new playable race, enhanced features of previous editions, plus a heap of other new content yet to be announced. Crikey, it's just like going home to find your 92-year-old granddad playing football in the garden.

Could it be StarCraft 2? WoW developer fans the flames of speculation as it promises big announcement next year
Blizzard Entertainment, not content with simply spilling the beans at the Leipzig Games Convention on plans to bring out new expansion sets for World of Warcraft on a yearly basis, has dropped hefty hints that we may see StarCraft 2 announced next year.
In an interview with IGN at the show, the developer's COO, Paul Sams, revealed that Blizzard is to make a major product announcement in 2007, and spoke about his love for the studio's StarCraft RTS game: "StarCraft is my absolutely favorite game of all time... As you probably already know, there is no doubt that we will continue the StarCraft and Diablo franchise, and trust me, I will be the happiest person in the world when we announce StarCraft 2."
It's obviously speculation, but Sams' revelation on a major unveiling for next year from Blizzard and his talk about StarCraft 2 could well mean we'll see official word on the RTS sequel emerge in 2007. Or the major unveiling may be Diablo 3. Or StarCraft: Ghost next-gen. Hmm, we could keep on guessing for some time...
We'll just have to wait and see what Blizzard reveals, but it's said that it's working on at least three unannounced games at the moment so it may well be we'll hear details on more than just one single new project from the studio next year.

A new Gamasutra article asks provocatively in its synopsis: 'Could games like Civilization benefit from putting their interfaces on a diet? Can a player control too many objects at once in a strategy game?' Are RTS titles too UI-intensive? The author notes: 'Even for a Civ addict like me, the game isn't much fun after about 1800. Too many clicks. I counted the clicks, mouse movements, and keystrokes that it took me to get through one move of Civilization III in the year 1848. Many hours later, when that turn was done, I'd counted 422 mouse clicks, 352 mouse movements, 290 key presses, 23 wheel scrolls, and 18 screen pans to scroll the screen.

Blizzard COO Paul Sams has told our sister-site GamesIndustry.biz that the company plans to release a new expansion pack for multi-million selling MMO World of Warcraft every year.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Sams said, "Starting with The Burning Crusade, every year thereafter we plan on bringing out a new expansion set - so every 12 months."
The Burning Crusade is the first expansion pack to be released for WOW. According to Sams, details of the beta will be announced in the near future. As for the release date - "We're still quoting very confidently winter and we will be more specific on the timeframe quite soon."
Although the code on the show floor in Leipzig this week has already been shown once, at E3, German consumers don't seem to mind - with Blizzard's booth almost impossible to navigate on the first public day of exhibition.
Come back tomorrow to read the full interview with Paul Sams and find out which next-gen machine he prefers, and what his thoughts are with regard to bringing WOW to consoles.

The third part to MMORPG Guild Wars, sub-named Nightfall, has been handed a global October 27 release date, challenging its band of warriors to do battle against the spreading of eternal darkness.
This stand-alone chapter will be available in both Standard and Collector's Editions, with the latter rewarding purchasers with a goodie bundle that includes a behind-the-scenes DVD, artwork booklet and CD soundtrack.
As for the actual adventuring, new customisable heroes march into the mix, with characters heading into such unfriendly lands as 'savage coasts' and 'poisonous deserts'. Weston-Super-Mare and Southend beach it is, then. Don't forget the bucket and spade...

The space MMOG EVE Online, where mining rock plays a big part of the economy, has recently been hit by a huge in-game scam. The aftermath of the EIB scam... was 700 Billion ISK, which might raise some $119,000 USD if sold on Ebay. (The current conversion rate is 100M ISK to 18 USD.) These events have prompted claims of player deaths, death threats, and speculation about What Would You Do With 700 Billion ISK?

Command & Conquer games without legendary supervillain Kane are like the original Star Wars movies without Darth Vader. Likewise, Kane not being played by actor Joe Kucan is like Vader without the baritone voice of James Earl Jones.
Thankfully, Electronics Arts knows the strength of the Dark Side is strong, and today announced that Kucan will reprise his role as the leader of the Brotherhood of Nod in the upcoming Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
Kane will appear in high-definition live-action cutscenes throughout the game, which will propel the game's sci-fi story forward. Tiberium Wars is set in the year 2047 on an Earth that has been almost completely covered in resource-sapping Tiberium crystals. With few zones left that are actually inhabitable, Kane leads his army on a quest to conquer the remaining safe zones, and gamers must try to stop him.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is being developed by EA's Los Angeles studio and is slated to ship in 2007 for the PC.

After this afternoon's Nod unvieling the cleaners at the Leipzig Games Convention were lucky that we - as unashamed C&C obsessives - didn't leave a little bit of wee on their nice clean floors.
Still, we'll try to control ourselves as we upload these first Nod screenshots for you, which show off The Brotherhood's new tanks and soldiers, which appears to include flame tanks and the old speedy bikes from Tiberian Sun.
We'll have more as it comes.

GameSpy has posted an extensive preview of The Rise of the Witch-king, the new expansion pack for The Battle for Middle-earth II. Expected to arrive on PCs this holiday season, the RotWK campaign takes place in the years after the One Ring leaves greedy Isildur, and the Lord of the Nazgul rises to power over the kingdom of Arnor (Aragorn's peeps). In addition to the 12-mission evil campaign, the new Angmar faction introduces the spellcasting Thrall Master and Sorcerer units, the latter of which can convert fallen enemies into servants of the Witch-king.

Lock up your sons and daughters. And furry pets. EA has finally whipped the mask of Nod leader Kane in a Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars trailer that's just materialised on the internet.
It's a very brief trailer, but Command & Conquer fans who have been awaiting the grand Kane unveiling can now sit back happy that the bald, moustachioed bad guy has now emerged from behind the scenes. View the trailer by hitting our media player top-right of the page - listen carefully and you can probably hear the echoes of a certain Mr Will Porter of PC Zone fame (and Kane's no.1 fan), bouncing up and down with excitement.
Trailer Here.

Software giant Electronic Arts has announced its acquisition of German development studio Phenomic, creators of Settlers and Spellforce, amongst other titles.
The studio will remain based in Engelheim, Germany, and is said to be focusing on Real Time Strategy titles for EA, although no specific new game announcements have been made at this time.
Paul Lee, president of EA's Worldwide Studios, commented: "The team at Phenomic is an outstanding group of developers. Their track record for building quality RTS games and creating original IP is impressive, and we share a strong common vision for the future of the strategy gaming market."
"We're looking forward to working with them on a new project that will be announced at a later date, and are delighted to welcome them to the EA family," Lee concluded.
"We've always been passionate about creating games with a focus on quality, innovation and fun, and EA has the same philosophy for game making," added Boris Kunkel, Phenomic MD.
"Being part of EA will help us turn our vision for future games into reality."

Same MMO, but visual, design overhauls coming.
Electronic Arts has managed to keep Ultima Online going for nine years now. Try and remember any other game that's managed a similar feat -- though World of Warcraft will probably give Ultima Online a run for its money eventually. To celebrate (and keep people's interest), Ultima Online is being "reborn," and a letter to fans on the official website outlines some of the changes coming. "You are one of the very first to get a glimpse of a reborn Ultima Online. We won't be releasing more details for a bit, but we do want to let you know a few things:
We are completely re-building the Ultima Online client with new graphics and a new easier-to-use interface.
It is an in-place upgrade. That means you will be able to keep your characters, items, houses and everything else you've earned over the past nine years.
We are committed to maintaining extremely low system specs. They will be higher than what UO launched with in 1997, but will still be far lower than almost any other MMORPG on the market.
The launch will happen in 2007.
There are many, many more surprises in store. The Ultima Online development team has been working hard for the past eight months to make real the vision of a thriving, vibrant Ultima Online. We are proud to finally let you in on our secret. Look for a full announcement soon.
I know you probably have lots of questions. Before this year ends, we will answer just about all of them, so keep watching www.uo.com.
Darkscribe
Producer - Ultima Online"
Is anyone out there still playing Ultima Online? They keep releasing expansion packs for the darn thing, so someone must be paying up, but what's keeping all of you from moving onto the Next Big Thing (tm)?

Square Enix sets the day its "missing epic" finally arrives.
In a tickle to RPG fans on the go, Square Enix announced today that Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS will arrive in North America on November 14, at which time players will at last have a chance at the one Final Fantasy title which never made it to the States (the Final Fantasy III we saw for Super Nintendo was Japan's Final Fantasy VI).
Final Fantasy III takes place in a world thrown out of balance when an earthquake pulls protective crystals from the earth. To restore order, four adventurers must find the crystals and fight a battle against darkness. The game comes to the DS with remodeled 3D graphics and a touch screen interface. Players can communicate with others and uncover hidden dungeons, quests, and items using a Wi-Fi connection.

Joint Task Force is Vivendi's latest RTS contender and, promising a modern warfare setting which pits your advanced military tech versus conventional forces, it's set its sights high - apparently, it'll set a new "benchmark for modern-day RTS games".
We guess, as ever, the proof will be in the pudding, but with Mithis Games - which was responsible for the much underrated Nexus: The Jupiter Incident and currently working on BattleStations Midway for Eidos - at the development helm, it should prove promising fare for armchair generals looking for a fresh modern combat challenge.
New screens have emerged from the JTF bunker this morning, which we thought we'd share with you since we're nice like that, and it seems the game's shaping up fairly well with a game engine which promises plenty of detail and some rather attractive explosive action.
Preview code has also recently been dispatched our way so we hope to bring you a more detailed playtest shortly, but in the meantime enjoy the screens and prepare to hit the beaches when JTF debuts this very autumn. If you'd like to see the game in action, slide eyes right for more screens and especially those in-game movies.

Arkane Studios' forthcoming fantasy romp Dark Messiah might primarily be an action game, but the title still features RPG elements courtesy of a character evolution system. In a nuthshell, this system is of the branching skill variety and allows players to 'instruct' their character in the ways of stealth, magic and melee combat, with the option of creating a hybrid hero or excelling in one particular skill line.
Anyway, new Dark Messiah screenshots and a trailer that have been released shed further light on this character evolution system, the trailer additionally featuring a hefty dose of gameplay footage. Enjoy.
Dark Messiah is set in the world of Ashan and finds players strapping on hero boots as lead character Sareth, who is caught up in events involving an apocalyptic prophecy. Have a peep at our 'Related' column on the right of this page to view our previous Dark Messiah coverage and nab more information on the game.
Dark Messiah is currently pencilled in for an October release.

Via Some dark corner of the www.
For every Japanese centric title that makes it over to the Western world, translation is always a touchy subject -- especially so when it comes to the Japanese role-playing genre. When we last saw Enchanted Arms (in episode 13 of The 1UP Show), it was memorable more for its off the wall voice work than its rather average trappings. An effeminate character, Makoto, stood out from the cast as a blatantly homosexual man, pining for the love of a fellow party mate. Jane Pinckard was quick to point out that he was more or less played for laughs and she wasn't mistaken. When Ubisoft originally announced its acquisition of Enchanted Arms for the U.S. market, many were curious to see just how it would handle this over the top personality. It is safe to say that it did so with flying colors, without censoring the game for local tastes. Makoto is still about as festive as Christopher Lowell trapped in a Queer Eye sandwich. As for the whole picture, the switch in language has been relatively painless.
Truth be told, Enchanted Arms is not the most original RPG and to actually get to the point where the player might just care about this ho-hum cast of misfits, solid acting is exactly what it needs. Overall, the U.S. cast of Enchanted Arms does an admirable job in fueling the relatively lifeless mannequins with a bit of spirit. The main character is of course the typical loser that inhabits every Japanese RPG, but his voiceover never sounds as whiny as you almost expect it to be, even when he is being something of an unruly child.
The overall feeling the talent produces is that of restraint. It may not achieve greatness, but it also never feels forced, nor does it feel like you're watching a Saturday morning Anime. The effort given is pleasing to the ear as well as the senses. As for those who simply can't hang with the new voices, it should be noted that Ubisoft has included the original Japanese voices as well.
For being such a manila envelope of a game, Enchanted Arms' trip across the Pacific was made relatively unscathed. Ubisoft has done a commendable job in both maintaining the original material as well as not insulting anyone with the typical band of RPG voice work that we're so used to seeing. As for the gameplay, our In-depth preview of the Japanese version is still very much a valid source of information until our final review.

Up until now the meagre drip drip of screenshots have been all that's required to get RTS fans excited, but once today's massive Command & Conquer 3 trailer streams its way across cyberspace, Marks & Spencer is going to flog more than a few pairs of trousers to excited C&C loyalists.
Along with some nostalgic GDI menu-shuffling, today's trailer gives us our first glimpse of Tiberium Wars in action, and unsurprisingly the game looks just as impressive in motion. Big Mammoth Tanks, screeching Orcas, rockin' rock music; it's all enough to induce a mild RTS heart-attack. In fact, we think we need to go and lie down for a moment.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is out sometime next year but stay tuned to CVG this week when we'll bring you the massive first look at the Nod faction, live from the Leipzig Games Convention. And if all goes well, maybe a certain goateed-dictator will turn up as well. We can but dream.
