Defcon developer Introversion has revealed that its next game will be called Subversion.
However, while beans have been spilled on the title, no real game details have been given. In a post in its forum, the dev's explained that it's very, very early days where the game's development is concerned, but has also interestingly said that the project existed as early as 2002.
The game "has been bubbling away in the backs of our minds for years, and has been an ongoing late night topic for us ever since we pushed it aside in 2003", Introversion says.
"In that time it has changed and grown and solidified and matured into something quite beautiful, and we're finally in a position to be able to do it justice. It's going to take us a couple of years, but as a company we're getting bored of keeping everything secret for so long, and the decision has been made to open the process up to the world."
On Tuesday, Introversion updated its forum with screenshots representing "the first weeks work in writing a procedural City Generator", which has had fans speculating as to the nature of Subversion.
The developer is to continue posting forum updates as development progresses.

While spring is often portrayed as a time when flowers burst forth from the ground and baby deer frolic through the meadow, Artificial Studios wants gamers to see it as a time of gunplay, wanton destruction, and fragging.
The independent developer today announced that its upcoming PC shooter CellFactor: Revolution (once known as CellFactor: Combat Training) will be released this spring. Previously, the game carried a nonspecific "TBA 2007" release date.
Though Artificial doesn't nail down any hard release date, it does hint at March being the month the game ships. A statement from the company released today says CellFactor will be available approximately one year from the time it debuted at GDC 2006 last March, and a few months after this year's CES (January 8-11), where it will be demoed to attendees.
The first-person shooter is set in the future and features "true-to-life" physics, including "realistic cloth, fluid, and scattered debris effects."

As gaming continues to grow and infiltrate the average household, nongaming companies are trying to cash in. In 2005, Turner Networks launched GameTap, an on-demand gaming service catering to both casual and retro gamers.
CBS-owned cable channel Showtime, which airs premium shows such as Weeds and The L Word, is also getting into the act, with the Q2 launch of a new company, reports the Associated Press. Called On Broadband, the gaming-service company will offer on-demand and downloadable games for broadband-connected PC users. Other content will include reviews and cheats, similar to GameTap.
"While it might not seem like a natural, when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense for Showtime," Showtime chairman and chief executive Matthew Blank told the AP. "We are used to dealing with a premium customer. We have the marketing and promotional expertise to be in those businesses."
The actual service will carry the brand of the local high-speed Internet providers, and On Broadband will take care of "all back-office tasks, including the sale and delivery of games." Revenue for On Broadband will be generated through subscription fees, fees for local cable companies, game sales, and advertising.
No specific game titles, genres, publishers, or partnered Internet service providers were mentioned.

Animal companionship is proving to be exceptionally popular with gamers, as Electronic Arts' The Sims 2: Pets expansion pack for its virtual life simulator once again topped the US retail PC game sales charts for the week of December 17-23, according to the latest numbers from the industry tracking NPD Group.
The add-on has been a regular inhabitant of the top spot on the charts since its October release, and was the first of five EA titles to make the charts for the week. The publisher also saw The Sims 2 land in fourth place, with its Open for Business and Glamour Life Stuff expansion packs returning to the charts in the ninth and 10th spots, respectively. Finally, EA's first-person shooter Battlefield 2142 moved up a notch from the week before, landing in seventh.
The week's runner-up is no stranger to the rarified air of the top spot itself, as Vivendi's massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft has seen multiple extended stays in that position since its release in 2004. The game's first expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, is set to be released later this month.
Take-Two's Global Star Software division also made it onto the podium this week with a third place showing for its Deal or No Deal, based on the Howie Mandel-hosted television show. The deluxe edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator X and THQ's Cars Radiator Springs Adventure ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, while Sega's Medieval II: Total War moved from eighth to fifth thanks in part to a drop in its average selling price, from $48 to $39.

The eBay bonanza of next-gen console auctions was all the rage over the holiday season, with shoppers hoping to snag a hard-to-find Wii or PlayStation 3 and willing to pay extra for the convenience. The console auctions have since settled down dramatically, but now a new gaming product high in demand and low in supply is getting attention in auctions.
The Collector's Edition of the World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Expansion Pack is drawing bids of almost three times its retail price on eBay. The add-on to the popular PC game will be launched in mid-January, and preorders of the expansion's deluxe edition have been sold out for months.
The CE of The Burning Crusade retails for $69.99 and includes the Art of The Burning Crusade book, a behind-the-scenes DVD, two WOW trading card packs with three exclusive cards, a mouse pad, the soundtrack, and an exclusive in-game pet.
In addition to the aforementioned goodies, the CE is a rare commodity for those who play the game, which had amassed 7.5 million subscribers worldwide as of November.
When asked how many copies of the Collector's Edition would be released, a Blizzard representative told GameSpot, "We’re unable to provide a specific number, but we can say that a very limited quantity of them will be made and no more will be reprinted after the initial allotment."
Currently, some auctions for the CE of the original World of Warcraft are going for more than $300.

In-game advertising firm IGA Worldwide has signed a new deal with Acclaim Games which covers six of the publisher's massively multiplayer online titles.
Under the terms of the deal, advertisements will appear in MMOGs such as 2Moons, 9Dragons, DANCE! and BOTS!!, plus two titles yet to be announced.
"This agreement expands the growth of our advertising network into social gaming," said IGA CEO Justin Townsend.
"This is the first of a string of announcements in this exciting new space, with well over 20 titles signed and due for launch over the coming quarter, bringing our total available reach in line with that of a TV network."
Acclaim CEO Howard Marks said that the publisher's games "already deliver millions of impressions a day", adding, "With our growing list of titles we expect to break the ten million daily impressions within months.
"Acclaim offers its sophisticated multiplayer game content online for free and charges for optional in-game virtual items," he continued.
"We are pleased to join IGA Worldwide?s network that enables us to continue to offer our games free to players."

Codemasters has released a new trailer for Turbine's upcoming Lord of the Rings MMORPG, which it's publishing later this year.
Available exclusively through Eurogamer TV, the trailer shows off lots of Shire-y locations.
And if you've not checked it out in the past, you ought to take a look at our Shadows of Angmar gamepage, where all the cool hobbits hang out.
There you'll discover links to more EGTV-hosted trailers, along with a preview that begins with a lot of nonsense from Pat about how Tom Bombadil is ace. He bloody well isn't.
Although Shadows of Angmar hopefully will be.

Luckily FiringSquad has picked up the slack. The site has issued its 'Most Anticipated' games of the year list, featuring twenty upcoming titles. Here's a look at the top five:
Supreme Commander (Gas Powered Games/THQ) - spiritual successor to Total Annihilation; sci-fi RTS will dual-monitor support
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Splash Damage/id Software/Activision) - prequel to Quake 2; two playable sides (Human and Strogg) are said to offer vastly different gameplay experiences
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (Blizzard) - the expansion to end all expansions ('cha-ching')
Spore (Maxis/EA) - from single-celled to universe conqueror; the video game to end all video games
Crysis (Crytek/EA) - it has the looks, can it live up to the hype?
Which games are you planning to upgrade your rig for?

First concrete details have emerged on Shivering Isles, Bethesda's expansion for its RPG epic The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Revealed in the latest edition of PC Zone magazine, word is that the expansion will offer 30-plus hours of new adventuring, features new quests, monsters, expanded freeform gameplay - quest lines that branch more than before, for example - and a new land "that you can watch change according to your vital life-or-death decisions".
Setting the scene, it's explained that an ominous-looking gate has opened in Nibben Bay, the portal leading to a torn realm - the Shivering Isles - ruled by Sheogorath, the god of madness and dementia. Apparently, adventurers will meet the god and "plough through his trials", but it's additionally hinted that ultimately we may well be usurping the deity. A ETA of Q2 2007 has been given.
PC Zone #177, which hits shelves today, has first screenshots from Shivering Isles and further information on the expansion - so, go grab it Oblivion fans.
Plus, the issue has a huge 44-page feature covering 2007's hottest PC games - Bioshock, Crysis, Assassin's Creed, Hellgate: London (you name it, it's in there) - a free Bioshock calendar, interviews with Telltale Games on Sam & Max and Codemasters on Clive Barker's Jericho, the hottest PC game reviews, and a 9GB games DVD stuffed with playable demos of Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Pro Evolution Soccer 6, Gothic 3 and more!

Hot off the great media conveyer belt is this pair of Command & Conquer 3 screenshots, pumping joy through our RTS veins as our inner excitable fan-ness waits for its release in a couple of months time.
To get in the mood we've got the Red Alert soundtrack blaring across the office - seriously - not only because we've just discovered after over 10 years, but because we can't wait to run over infantry with our near-indestructible harvesters of justice once more.
Look out for our hands-on Tiberium Wars impressions very soon

Recently Ben Kuchera of Ars Technica was interviewed about Left Behind: Eternal Forces on NPR's All Things Considered and found himself "defending the Christian right." He says Left Behind is being unfairly "demonized," the same way Bully and GTA have been, "We can't pick and choose our fights based on whether or not we agree with what a game says; we must fight for the game's ability to say anything it wants to." And that sound you hear is the industry getting just a little older.
Religion, sex, politics and everything else we've heard "don't belong in games" will be -- or already has been -- incorporated into titles that'll sell millions of copies. As the industry gets older and the average demographic playing them does as well, complex ideas that may offend or challenge will start to pop up. What's thrilling and horrible at the same time is we have to defend the games with messages we agree with as strongly as those we don't. Like movies, music, theater, literature, television and other art, we shouldn't stop the message from being said, just make sure to vote with your wallet on what games you want to see more of.

Resolution Interactive has announced it's working on Clusterball 2, tentatively pushing a release date of Q4 2007.
The sequel will arrive seven years after its predecessor was quietly launched, and boasts obvious technical and graphical improvements, as well as a host of new features.
We're promised a new overhauled weapon system, allowing offensive, defensive and combined weapon choices. You will also make tactical decisions about which aircraft you choose, whether it's the small and fast ship or slow and heavy option - each brandishing unique pros and cons.
Five new game modes enter the fray: Fatball, Stronghold, Capture, Shootout and Clusterball Racing. Community features such as automatic tournaments, viewer servers, massive team sections and oodles of measure points are also crammed in.
"Clusterball 2 excels its critically acclaimed predecessor in all areas and is set to be a milestone in gaming history."
Details of the sequel emerged on the freshly launched website late last week, along with a new trailer for the title.
Clusterball is an online PC flight game for up to 12 players, in which the ultimate goal is to collect as many balls as possible whilst trying to stop your opponents doing the same. To defeat the opposition you must force them to crash, making use of flight-altering weapons such as the control-reversing missiles.
We thoroughly enjoyed the original back in 2001, though niggles with the physics engine and in-game advertising spoiled our party.

Our battle plans and sand tables are whirling in excited anticipation of Supreme Commander's release, so much so that we featured the RTS title in our recent top PC games to watch in 2007 feature. We want it so much, so much it hurts - possibly even more than a laser beam from a 30ft behemoth robot spider fired up the derrière. Possibly.
Anyway, we've uploaded new footage featuring around two minutes of in-game action. Enjoy.

Digital Extremes, heavily involved in PC development in the past, has revealed that the PC version of its long-in-development action game Dark Sector is now not going to see the light of day.
The news comes in a recent interview with project lead Steve Sinclair conducted by Gamespot, in which the development honcho confirms that the moody-looking title while no longer PC-bound is still heading for a "simultaneous launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."
In case you've missed previous coverage of the game, Dark Sector started off as a space-based romp in the stars but now has you playing in a near-future adventure where bio-weapons take center stage. It's currently scheduled for release at the end of the year.

During the time our bellies were suffering from post-Christmas day turkey fallout, JoWood updated the Söldner website announcing a sequel to the mercenary-themed shooter is currently in development.
So far, the announcement on Söldner 2 has only appeared on the German-language version of the website. According to our attempts at translation, the sequel is expected to hit in Q4 2007 and is being developed by gEasy.
The original Söldner game was a multiplayer-focussed (although single-player did feature), modern-day military warfare shooter.

Awesome PC Homebrew Release by Luke314PI
I finally finished Darkest Island over the weekend, and was able to give it to my friends and family as a late Christmas present. My little brother was very adamant about releasing this game online for people to play by the end of the year, so here it is. I have decided to make the game a free download. This was my practice run in making a large scale video game, and it is a little rough around the edges. But it is still really fun, and I hope everyone gives it a try.
The minimum system requirements are a 1.2 ghz processor with 512 MB RAM and a video card with 128 MB of video RAM. It also requires the latest DirectX drivers dated December 2006 which can be downloaded here. It will run better on higher specs of course.
Darkest Island is the story of a man named Daniel who wakes up in a bloody hospital bed on a remote island with no knowledge of how he got there. A girl's voice echoes in his mind, begging for him to come and rescue her, and promising to help him get off the island. Daniel finds that this hospital is actually a research facility, and the inhabitants are no longer human. These zombie-like creatures are not the only enemies that Daniel makes. Soon he has armed soldiers hunting him as well. The story of the facility unfolds as Daniel makes his way into the dark center of the island.

And here is the link to the download (236 MB):

The 22-man team working to modernize Goldeneye 64 with the Source Engine have given everyone the perfect Christmas gift: a public beta showing off the fruits of their labor. (It's just a step above last year's present, the alpha version.)
The mod, which requires a Source-based game to work, has already garnered much attention over the years for the level of detail in its stage design and weaponry. All information, including known bugs, can be found on the developer Wiki. Here are some suggestions, via the mod's main website, on how to stabilize the game:
Check for and download latest video card drivers
A server with 10 people seems to work better
Have the Base SDK installed
Download the mod again on another mirror and reinstall the mod.
Turn HDR off
Turn shadow detail on low
A patch is being planned but no date has been determined.

Counter-Strike players will be served ads by IGA's Radial dynamic in-game advertising network, according to a report on MCV. Further news on in-game ads in CS, coming via way of fan site CS-Nation, says that the adverts will actually only appear in Counter-Strike 1.6.
"Putting ads into our games is a new thing for us. Whenever we're testing something new, we try to be somewhat scientific - isolating the implementation so we can measure its success or failure. That's why we chose just one title", Valve's Doug Lombardi said when asked why the advertising was being limited to that particular game.
Advertisement:
Presumably then, if it's a success, the in-game advertising will eventually spread to other Valve online games.
IGA sells the ad space to customers, Lombardi explained, adding that part of the plus side to the deal is a potential benefit to mod development and developers.
"...for a long time we've looked for new ways to let mod authors make money. Funding a game development project is currently a chicken and egg problem - you can't get funding without having already built a great product, and you can't build something great without money in the bank.
"If this experiment with advertising in CS 1.6 is successful, it may turn out that we're able to help the next round of successful mods get off the ground because of ad revenue."
Counter-Strike 1.6 players can expect to see adverts in numerous places, including posted on walls in levels, on the scoreboard screen and one in the letterboxed area of Spectator mode, Lombardi said.
