If you had to pick an existing franchise to build a massively multiplayer role-playing game around, it doesn't get much bigger than Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was the top-grossing movie of 2006, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End could very well claim that honor this year. Not surprisingly, Disney Online has been working on an online game that will let players create a pirate character, adventure alongside hundreds of other players, and interact with virtual versions of Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner, and other characters from the movies.
With the game's launch set sometime this spring, Disney Online today revealed that the game will feature a free, ad-supported mode of play as well as a traditional subscription model.
Consumers will have two options when Pirates launches. The basic access plan will give players access to many of the game's features for as long as they like, and there will be no subscription fee for the basic mode. Instead, the basic access will be supported by some type of contextual advertising that's not in the game itself.
No advertising partners were announced today.
At this point, it sounds like the basic access mode will run inside a bordered window, with the ads bordering the game. If users want to gain access to all the content in the game, as well as run without ads, they can choose the advanced subscription mode.
Disney Online has announced that Pirates will have a $9.95 monthly fee.
Given the popularity of the movie franchise, particularly among families and kids, Pirates is being positioned as a much more user- and family-friendly style of massively multiplayer game. For example, the game's system requirements will be very low, to ensure that vast percentage of the movie's fan base will be able to play the game on their systems. The graphics aren't cutting-edge, but they do have an animated cartoon style to them, which should certainly appeal to the teen crowd that Disney Online is aiming for.
Players will be able to pursue a wide variety of quests in the game, with the overall goal of trying to become the most notorious pirate of the Caribbean. Activities will include sword fighting, card playing in taverns, ship battles, and much more. The game features locales from the movies, as well as some created for the game. In addition, a new villain, Jolly Rodger, makes an appearance leading an army of the undead. Players can also expect to encounter Davy Jones and his crew throughout their adventures.

The continued success of World of Warcraft has helped raise Vivendi Games' revenues by over 25 per cent, to EUR 804 million, for the full year of 2006.
Other solid performers for the full year include new IP Scarface: The World is Yours and FEAR, movie tie-ins Ice Age 2 and Eragon, and The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning.
For the fourth quarter, Vivendi Games' revenues were up 33.1 per cent over the previous year, to EUR 326 million, again with World of Warcraft driving success.
Revenues for the entire Vivendi group, which includes music, pay TV, mobile and telecoms divisions, reached EUR 20.1 billion in 2006, a rise of three per cent of over 2005.

Packom Interactive has whipped us into a frenzy this morning with a pre-announcement announcement for its space-shooter Divine, telling us to prepare ourselves for a mega-update on 6th February.
"What we will unveil at that point in time is only for us to know and for you to find out," the game's website reads. We expect maybe a trailer or some screenshots.
Divine is an indie title that started life back in April 2005 as a simple project with an achievable deadline. An asteroid crashed into earth causing people to flee to the available space colonies, you see, and only the "Divine" were granted access, making the rest of the population scatter across space in search of a home.
Naturally everyone is now at war, and it's up to you as Robert Akin to use your piloting skills to repair relations between the warring factions.
The title now offers 10 levels to play through in a 3D space-landscape built on an internally developed engine, and puts multiple flying craft at your disposal.
It seems the staff base is largely voluntary, with jobs advertised as "non-paying" on the website, though the game is expected to cost a small amount to play when it's released sometime this year.

Microsoft has responded to reports that its new operating system Windows Vista affects the performance of games.
A statement sent to TG Daily, Rich Wickham, director of Games for Windows, said that "the recent claims made about Windows Vista online game compatibility issues have been grossly overstated and in actuality, a fraction of casual games are encountering temporary upgrade issues - a situation we have largely corrected and are committed to fixing within days."
He added, "For context, of the more than 100 web-based games currently available on MSN Games, only five do not run on Windows Vista as of January 30 and nearly 100 percent will be fully compatible by week's end with an update to the Windows Vista installer."

Over the past few months we've seen a number of publishers embracing Valve Software's Steam. Numerous back-catalogue PC games from have appeared for digital distribution on the platform and, in the case of the likes of Dark Messiah, on the day of retail release.
It's a trend that's set to continue and evolve, according to Valve Software.
Speaking to CVG in a Steam-focused interview which we'll be publishing shortly, Valve's director of marketing Doug Lombardi explained, "Many of the developers and publishers using Steam presently have more planned - from bringing new day-and-date titles to re-launching critically acclaimed but out of stock titles to over 10 million active gamers.
"Of all the metrics we use to gauge the success of our efforts, the fact that our partners are excited and coming back for more is the most telling", he added.
Lombardi said that "Profits and improving the customer experience" are key factors that make Steam appealing to the publishers. "The word is out: Steam has established itself as a viable platform for selling and managing PC games".

Windows Vista version of Introversion's PC strategy game Darwinia is now available via the MSN Vista games page for $19.95 (about 10 quid).
Darwinia's become a cult classic and features a weird yet wonderful art style, the game focusing on a tribe of nomadic sprites that players have to save from doom and destruction.
A move to Vista means enhancements for the game. A switch from OpenGL to DirectX introduces new and improved visual effects, there's support for the Xbox 360 controller and three new levels have been added.
Introversion says that now it's finished work on the Vista version of Darwinia "we plan to make a Darwinia patch available to everyone that encorporates [sic] all the new features and enhancements we've written."
The developer also promises that "We've got some cool new stuff planned for Darwinia in the future and this is just the beginning."

A 22-year-old Ukrainian gamer, considered one of the top Lineage II players in Europe, stomped another gamer to death after the man tried to stop a fight between rival clan members, The Moscow Times reports.
Alexander "DVP" Ponamorenko has been arrested and charged with the beating death of Alexander "Sverkh" Blyoskin, 22, who was trying to break-up a fight between Ponamorenko and his online nemesis, known only as Shtai, a friend of Blyoskin, according to the Basmanny District Prosecutor's Office.
The three were at a gathering of 20 to 30 Lineage II gamers at a cafe in central Moscow on Jan. 12 when the fight broke out.
Everybody in the room noticed how the expression on DVP's face changed when he saw Shtai," a witness and fellow gamer, identified only as Pavel, told Rossia television on Saturday.
Ponamorenko and Kirill took things outside, and after the two came to blows, Blyoskin, a student at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and a friend of Kirill's, tried to calm Ponamorenko down, Tatarinova said.
Accounts differ as to what happened next. Some witnesses say Ponamorenko punched Blyoskin, who played Lineage II under the nickname "Sverkh," and that the student fell and hit his head on the asphalt, Rossia television reported.
Tatarinova, however, said Ponamorenko stomped on Blyoskin's head while he lay on the ground.
Blyoskin was taken to a local hospital where he died four days later. He was buried at Moscow's Domodedovskoye cemetery on Jan. 19.
As one of my friend's pointed out when I told him about this sad story: If it wasn't a game gathering it would have been a soccer match or just everyday barroom brawl.

Bill Gates himself may have been on hand to launch Windows Vista at the British Library yesterday, but despite a range of gaming features being touted for the new operating system little was on show at the high profile event.
Gaming applications were glossed over during the keynote presentation and while partners such as Universal Music and ITN were used to showcase new Vista functions, there were didn't appear to be any games publishing partners or executives from Microsoft's own Xbox division in attendance.
Vista promises cross-platform gaming between the Xbox 360 and PC, as well as incorporating the console's popular Achievements system into PC titles. Games developers are working with DirectX 10 for Vista, with titles such as Crytek's Crysis and Funcom's Age of supporting the new operating system.
Microsoft is also in the middle of a new Games for Windows push, again using Vista and unified branding to assure gamers that confusion over possible incompatibility is no longer an issue.
But despite all of this, Microsoft had little to offer in the way of soundbites for the gaming community.
"It's an extremely important audience for us, although we didn't really focus on the gaming aspects today," said David Weeks, Windows client marketing manager for Microsoft UK, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz.
"We're expecting the games industry to build on Vista and we expect great applications to come out in the future and really use the power of the PC to its fullest. Obviously, when DirectX 10 comes out we're going to see cross-platform games. And that's going to change the whole parameters of gaming."
During his keynote Gates, together with British Library chief executive Lynne Brindley, revealed 3D images of rare Leonardo Da Vinci codices, with the Microsoft chairman commenting, "Graphics were originally created for the gamers - who are a very demanding audience - but now we can apply them to other areas."
He also pledged that Vista will allow users to "play games that are of a whole new level of realism and connecting up with other people around the world".
Microsoft was happy to talk up the security functions of Vista, which allow parents to set limits on gaming time and apply industry standard rating systems - and as Weeks put it, "check that my daughter is doing homework instead of playing games".
Some developers have questioned what they see as excessive safety features in Vista, but Weeks denied that Microsoft had received negative feedback from the gaming industry.
"The game development community hasn't told us it's too security heavy," he said.
According to Weeks, "Windows Vista can take it to the next level. PC gaming will become much more mainstream." However, there was little evidence to support this on show at the Vista launch event, which focused on standard entertainment features such as the option to record TV programmes and create photo slideshows - rather than the features which are designed to breathe new live into the PC gaming market.

Crysis will be one of the first PC games out the door that'll employ DirectX 10, and a new gameplay trailer from the shooter shows what we can expect thanks to the inclusion of Microsoft's new technology. Good for you if you're super-flush with cash and can afford a rig to run this game at full whack, because it will be an awesome spectacle to behold.
Just check out the 'frozen' battle with the massive alien toward the end of the trailer - fantastic!
Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli recently told us that with DirectX 10 the developer gets "performance increase and feature sets that allow the experience to be ultimately more cinematic, video-realistic and dense". Enjoy the footage.

Microsoft has rolled out an update for Windows Vista that addresses problems users may have been experiencing when trying to run games.
Going by the catchy title Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update, the update, says the company, is "a package of software updates that address common application compatibility issues in Windows Vista".
It continues about the game side of the update - because that's what we're interested in -"When you try to install and run certain legacy games... in Windows Vista, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms: The game... may not be installed correctly; The game... may cause system instability; The primary functions of the game... may not work correctly."
The update "improves support in Windows Vista" for the likes of Lego Star Wars, Flight Sim X, Battlefield 2 Deluxe, Age of Empires III and Fable: The Lost Chapters. Interesting that some of those are published by Microsoft Game Studios... Anyway, a full list of games addressed by the update and download instructions can be found here.

Microsoft's press spiel says that its new Windows Vista operating system - which launched today - offers "amazing experiences for all gamers, from the most casual players to hard-core enthusiasts". But then it would say that, wouldn't it.
For a more impartial view on the new OS, we asked four experts what they think about Vista and what its introduction really means for gamers. We'll be posting the first part of our own in-depth look at Vista later today but, until then, digest these wise words from the PC sages before you make that upgrade...
Ross Atherton, editor, PC Gamer
"Windows Vista is going to be a great operating system, but the games industry has a bit of catching up to do. Right now there are no games that take advantage of its killer app, DirectX 10, but when Crysis launches that'll be a big reason to upgrade. Also, running current games on Vista can result in framerate drops, particularly on OpenGL games like Quake 4 and Call of Duty. This is partly because Vista is simply more demanding on your PC's innards, but mostly because graphics drivers and game patches are lagging behind Vista's new tech; in the fullness of time, when everything's updated, the situation will be very rosy for PC gamers."
Duncan Harris, writer, Edge (www.edge-online.co.uk)
"The lack of optimised drivers and software will no doubt make Vista's start as a gaming platform a troubled one. With DirectX 10 yet to flex its muscles, it's likely that hardware upgrades such as multi-core CPUs and dual-configuration graphics cards will prove a sounder short-term investment."
Dean Evans, editor, Tech.co.uk (www.tech.co.uk)
"Windows Vista delivers several improvements over Windows XP, both in terms of its user interface and its functionality. It's safer, prettier and more flexible and intuitive than ever before. Yet for the majority of home users, at least, it lacks the sparkle of a must-have upgrade. Who's excited? Not many. Gamers, on the other hand, are better served with exclusive DirectX 10 support - a renewed 'Games for Windows' push by Microsoft - not to mention plans for a Live Anywhere initiative that will link PCs to Xbox 360 consoles and eventually mobile phones. There's no compelling reason to upgrade today, but buy a new PC in the future and you'll get Vista whether you want it or not."
Adam Ifans, editor, PC Format (www.pcformat.co.uk)
"Over the past few years, PC Format has tested every beta version of Vista as it has struggled to emerge from the R&D labs at Microsoft. One thing is certain: we'll all be using it to play games on at some stage in the future. But now? No point. DirectX 10 isn't even available yet and chances are that when it does get bolted on to Vista there'll only be one or two games that make use of it. In short, keep hold of your XP system until you see a DirectX 10 compatible game you simply have to play."

We never thought we'd mention Counter-Strike and Shadow of the Colossus in the same sentence but a modder taken CS: Source and made a level (named de_wanda) inspired by Sony's PS2 title.
It's quite pretty really - take a look at the screenshots, which have come from hl2world.com forums.
Admire it, admire the lovely hi-res textures, but good luck finding it running on any 'net servers. Apparently the file is so big it'd break the internet. Or something.
Still, people are getting excited by the grand Combine versus Colossus diaroma thingy, which can be seen in some of the screenshots.

Aims to stimulate PC games market and integrate with Xbox 360
Microsoft is launching its Windows Vista operating system around the world today, having pledged that the new platform will provide significant benefits to gamers and game developers.
Vista introduces DirectX 10, a new graphics API that will enable developers to take advantage of new effects and techniques that Windows XP is unable to replicate. Games like Crysis from EA will provide flagship support in the core gamer market.
The new OS also introduces the Vista Games Explorer, which Microsoft says will make it easier for users to manage game installations and saved data.
Integration with Xbox 360's online facilities will soon grow to include cross-platform multiplayer titles, starting with Shadowrun and UNO, while other games like the PC Halo 2 will add Xbox 360's popular "achievements" system to existing titles, and allow users to view each other's online status and exchange messages irrespective of platform.
Meanwhile, "Games for Windows" branding will help create the impression of a unified software platform, helping to assuage consumer fears that PC software is a minefield of compatibility issues. Titles already signed up include this year's Age of Conan (due in October) and Supreme Commander, with some games already tied to it.
The operating system is available in four home versions, boasting an array of interface and security tools, priced between GBP 100 and 250 (EUR 150 and 380. In order to run the operating system, users will need an 800MHz processor, 512MB RAM and a 15GB hard disk as a minimum.
Microsoft has said it will continue to support Windows XP until 2011, but aims to convince users to switch by specifically binding advances like DirectX 10 to its new operating system.

Sports Interactive says it has been forced to abandon its Eastside Hockey Manager series due to mounting piracy.
That's according to managing director Miles Jacobson, who explained the situation in a forum post this afternoon as the developer posted the game's final patch.
Despite strong reviews, SI discovered that sales simply weren't picking up, even in Scandinavia where the first game was strongest.
"The sales in Scandinavia, that had pretty much kept the game going, dropped heavily, from our analysis of the situation, mainly due to the game getting hacked before release, and pirated," Jacobson explained.
SI opted for digital distribution instead of a boxed release, but the expected sales didn't pick up. "The forums were full of people constructively criticising, and praising (just the way we like it) and we were all pretty buoyant.
"We had more licences than any other hockey game in history, it was the best Hockey management game in the history of gaming ever, and Riz and his team had done an amazing job. So, despite Hockey being a bit less popular post the hiatus of the sport in the US in 2004, we still couldn't fail, right?
"Wrong. The orders came in a drizzle, rather than a flood. We scratched our heads trying to work out what had gone wrong. And then someone pointed out that the game was being pirated, and was available as a torrent from lots of different pirating sites. Then we sat there and watched as the claimed amount of downloads on those sites went up and up, as sales stayed static.
"Basically, the game did not bring in enough money to cover the development costs, let alone the license fees on top of that. So we've had to make the decision to stop development on the game for now - it doesn't mean that it'll never come back, but for the foreseeable future, there will not be another version of Eastside Hockey Manager."
There is an upside though, as Jacobson adds that all of the people working on the Eastside series have relocated to other projects within the company.
"Thank you to all of you out there who supported the Eastside Hockey Manager project by buying the game, and especially those who helped with testing and research.
"And to those of you who pirated it, this is what happens when you steal. There are no excuses you can give that are valid for stealing - you have lead to the demise of a game that you enjoyed playing," Jacobson concluded.

Ritual Entertainment co-founder Richard 'Levelord' Gray has confirmed that SiN Episodes: Emergence didn't sell well enough to fund the development of a second game, and that work on it has been postponed.
"The first episode did well, but not good enough to completely self-fund the second episode," Gray told official community site Ritualistic. "We did continue with Episode 2, but we had to stop a few months ago due to a funding problem."
He was speaking the aftermath of Ritual Entertainment's acquisition by casual games company Mumbo Jumbo, whose CEO, Mark Cottam, had been recently reported as saying that it didn't want the developer "involved at all in the action style games".
Still, Richard Gray remains positive that his once independent team will return to the series when it's established in the casual games sector.
"What we plan to do right now, both Ritual and MumboJumbo, is establish ourselves in the casual gaming market with strong new franchises and then return to SiN at a later date," he explained. "We love SiN, make no mistake, and we definitely want to return to it."
Ritual has so far released one episode of the new SiN series, via Steam, which met with decent reviews.
There's no final word on what to expect from the new breed of games from the developer, but Gray expects multiple titles before the end of the year.
"I'm not going to give any specific dates, but our plans are to finish more than a few games this year," he added. "Expect to see the Ritual logo on your PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox, console downloads... everywhere!"

Another World creator Eric Chahi has told Eurogamer that he's working on a strategy game idea.
"For now I'm working alone on a game design, my ideas are very clear and I hope to start it soon," he told us in an interview to mark the release of the 15th anniversary edition of Another World.
"The closest hint I can convey is it a strategy game but I can't tell anything more for now."
Another World sold around one million copies worldwide in the 1990s, but Chahi says he isn't interested in working on a direct sequel. "I prefer to create something new," he told us.
As for what he's been up to since the six years he spent working on Heart of Darkness (remember that one?), it sounds like he's been enjoying himself (travelling, painting, "volcano photography, sound synthesis programming").
But he's not stopped playing games, although he does admit that he's struggled to find games that appeal to him.
As a result, he turned to older games, like Shenmue 2 ("I missed when it had been released").
"Next games on my list are Viva Piñata, Lost Planet and - when they come out - Supreme Commander and Spore. Also I can't wait to play on Wii," he concluded.

Microsoft's a bit chuffed about the launch of Windows Vista today, but amidst the smiles and platitudinous posturing there are already murmurs of dissent - with former DirectX star Alex St. John claiming that Vista "breaks" casual games through overly restrictive security protocols.
St. John - these days the chief executive of WildTangent - has said that his company had to spend a year getting its games to work with Vista, for which it now offers a free update on its website. "We worked with nearly every major casual game developer to get their games tested and compatible with Vista in our network in anticipation of these problems," he said.
It's not all good news though. "Parents who choose to use Vista's parental controls are likely to accidentally block access to hundreds of very popular family friendly games that happen not to have ESRB ratings," says St. John, referring to other game products distributed through Yahoo, RealArcade and even Microsoft's own MSN network.
Microsoft hasn't had anything to say yet, but Ellie's off at a launch event in London schmoozing so we'll try and get her to see what they say.

Bill Gates stopped in at British Library in London this morning to officially launch Windows Vista and we've even got the pictures to prove it.
It's not often Gates ventures to these shores of the launch of a new product. He hasn't been anywhere near the UK launches of Xbox or Xbox 360 but he was on hand to lets members of the press know why you need Vista in your life.
It's been almost 24 years since Microsoft introduced the key commands Ctrl, Alt and Delete along with the blue screen of death into our lives but we haven't looked back since. Gates talked about Vista being the building blocks of a digital lifestyle while pointing out the number of improvements to the operating system.
Vista launches today across the UK. You can try your luck and WIN a copy, or if you've already got your hands on one, take a look at our Vista feature here. Thanks to our friends on Home Cinema Choice (new issue on sale Feb 15).
