Just days before the release of expansion The Burning Crusade, Blizzard has revealed that the subscriber base for World of Warcraft has now topped eight million worldwide.
The developer has added that its MMORPG has also "achieved new regional subscriber milestones". North America has over two million WoW players, China over 3.5 million and Europe over 1.5 million.
Unsurprisingly, Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, has said the dev is "ecstatic" that the WoW community has continued to grow steadily since the game launched in late 2004.
"This milestone wouldn't have been possible for us to achieve without the incredible support of our players. With the release of our expansion pack, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, coming next week, we're looking forward to welcoming more players to Azeroth and offering even more quality content for our community to enjoy", he added.

Following up yesterday's report that upcoming PC RPG Hellgate: London will adopt a paid subscription system for its online mode, Flagship Studios CEO Bill Roper has elaborated saying that it's only one option the developer and joint-pubishers EA and Namco Bandai are considering.
Speaking to Shacknews, Roper noted that, even if an MMO-style subscription method is adopted for Hellgate, it's guaranteed to include some kind of free online mode, though it will most likely not include the full list of features open to paying users.
"If you want lots of great continual content, and all of the services, we'll have to figure out how to do that," Roper said, adding that he thinks it's difficult to find a financially viable solution for the studio that is also acceptable for players. "For us, it's complex, it has to work together globally, and with three different publishers."

Epic Games VP aMark Rein has again debunked rumours of a PC version of Gears of War, following references to the game in recent nVidia graphics drivers.
"You know console games are developed on PCs, right? Even if we never release Gears of War on PC we still need to run the game on PC to develop and test content for it," Rein wrote in a foum post.
"Our first E3 demo, over two years ago, was done on an PC equipped with dual nVidia graphics cards. That was how we simulated the power of Xbox 360 before there was actually a real Xbox 360 to run on."
Speculation about a PC version of the shooter has circulated the 'net more than once, following comments by Microsoft and a PC boxart image found in Games for Windows magazine ads.
Explaining the latest rumour outbreak, Rein said: "We gave nVidia a copy of wargame.exe (along with some sample content from Gears) so they could help us tweak Unreal Engine 3 performance and reliability on nVidia graphics chips. That was necessary to make the development tools perform well and ensure that their drivers would support UE3 going forward."
However, we still can't help but notice that Epic has again avoided straight-out denying the PC version's existence...

The inboxes of GameSpot editors are regularly bombarded with spam, but a handful of shady missives that slipped through the junk-mail filter this week show that at least one spammer is trying to trick World of Warcraft players and Steam users into handing up their account information through a practice commonly known as spoofing or phishing.
No, not that kind of fishing!
The first e-mail arrived Sunday night, claiming to be from Steam makers Valve Corporation. It read, "Dear Steam User, This is the official notification from STEAM, that your account will be deactivated and deleted if not email us immediately." To avoid the threatened deletion, the e-mail recipient was told to send an e-mail to steam.admins@gmail.com "with you [sic] login details," specifically a user name, a password, and a real name.
The scammer apparently used an e-mail from a previous phishing attempt as a template. A copyright line at the bottom of the message indicated not only that the contents of the e-mail were copyright Valve Corporation, but also a logo implying that Valve is an Equal Housing Lender in accordance with Federal Fair Lending Laws (a logo that when clicked on linked to Bank of America's page about its Equal Housing Lender status).
A second draft of the Valve phishing scam was received early Monday morning, this one linking to an external site that mimics the appearance of the official Valve site and requests that enter their account information to log in. While the grammar was improved, the Equal Housing Lender logo remained.
Monday night, a handful of nearly identical e-mails arrived, these ones seeking World of Warcraft account log-in information. The e-mails appeared to come from account@worldofwarcraft.com, and featured the same formatting and phising tactics of the second Valve e-mail. Again, the spam carried the Equal Housing Lender logo.
According to the security center on publisher Blizzard's official World of Warcraft Web site, phishing is one of the biggest sources of user security problems the company encounters. Downloading Trojans and other harmful programs disguised as add-ons or hacks for the game is another.
"People should be suspicious of anything that doesn’t come from a Blizzard.com email address, or attempts to forward you to a site that isn’t Blizzard.com or worldofwarcraft.com," a Blizzard representative told GameSpot. "If you’re unsure about any communication you receive, you can forward any email to our official address--billing@blizzard.com--and do NOT reply at all unless our Billing staff actually confirms for you that the message is legitimate."
As for what the company is doing to crack down on these scams, the rep said, "Blizzard works actively to combat fraud against our customers," and regularly updates players on new security measures through its forums and phone support.

It's been a good week for Crysis fans. New gameplay footage earlier this week, new screenshots yesterday and today another three new images have been deployed. Now, Mr EA, you really, really ARE spoiling us!
Everything we see of Crysis is impressive, but we have to say that two of the three new screenshots that have been released - the one with an alien shooting a laser thing from its mouth and the one with the close-up of the lead character - are some of our most favourite to date.

In order to celebrate the release of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade HMV Oxford Street will be holding a launch even on the eve of the expansion's release, January 16.
Head down to the event and you'll be able to meet and greet Blizzard employees who will be in attendance - the presence of Blizzard designer Jon LeCraft is confirmed to date, but he may well be joined by colleagues.
HMV doors actually open at 11.00pm on January 15, and naturally you'll be able to purchase your copy of TBC - vanilla and/or special edition - at the stroke of midnight and get it signed by Mr. LeCraft. Plus, to ramp up the fun factor the likes of a Gurky baby Murloc pet giveaway, demonstrations of the World of Warcraft trading card game and a WoW: TBC t-shirt (which are apparently quite exclusive) giveaway will be happening.
Similar events will be occurring in Berlin, Paris and Stockholm. For more details, trip over to the official European World of Warcraft website.

Gamers anticipating Flagship Studios' FPS-RPG Hellgate: London should be prepared to pay to play the game online.
According to Shacknews, online multiplayer is subscription-based, Flagship boss Bill Roper explaining that this part of the game contains similar features to MMOGs such as continual content updates, a guild and social system and raid-style action.
It's further mentioned that Hellgate online is "heavily instanced" and that, while player versus player is included, it'll be on a minor scale on launch - player versus environment solo and in parties/groups is the major game type.
In addition, apparently single-player missions and storyline appear in full in multiplayer and this is accompanied by additional multiplayer-specific content. The single-player dynamic generation element - with levels and items, for example - remains intact too.
Flagship has said it expects to run an open beta for Hellgate multiplayer before the game hits PC this summer. Subscription pricing details have not been mentioned as yet.

Warmonger's destruction system comes courtesy of the shooter being built around the AGEIA PhysX processor, the dev explains, which in addition allows for "stunning fluid and cloth-based effects unlike anything seen before." And this is being combined with Epic's Unreal Engine 3.
"Our ability to combine the AGEIA PhysX engine with Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) will forever change the way people think and play first-person shooters," reckons Scott Brown, president of NetDevil. "New rigid body technology and implementation allow for scope of destruction unlike any other FPS currently available. As a player, you'll be able to feel the freedom of completely adaptive environments and the full use of conscious, destructive power."
Warmonger's set in 2029, and two of the "largest military spenders" are in dispute over a large cache of Iranian oil fields, first details released inform. The dispute escalates, and war breaks out on US soil.
"The game is staged for players to take down an entire city; one block at a time. As maps are won, a larger tactical influence is then triggered in the next, or surrounding, map(s). Each map instance will play differently as the sheer destruction of map elements forces players to adapt and find new ways to win or defend their objectives. Every round leads you closer to dominating the web of maps that make up the entire city and players have the ability to raise their ranking in a class, gaining extra abilities for high performance. "Operation: Downtown Destruction" is part of a longer series involving distinct periods from the episodic "Warmonger" story."
Speaking further about Warmonger's destruction system, NetDevil says that it "allows dynamic gameplay to emerge from the results of combat, where every aspect of the environment can be completely leveled. Destruction is done procedurally, rather than pre-canned animations that are found in most games today.
"As a result, explosives, rockets, indirect fire, and vehicle combat can literally blow away walls, drop ceilings and open up new pathways for enhanced gameflow. Collision detection has also been carefully considered during development, and the effect of destruction within the environment can be used as a weapon. A sniper can

Philips launched its upcoming amBX gaming hardware at CES yesterday with a Supreme Commander demo - promising console-related announcements at GDC in March.
Showing the amBX technology with the use of some oversized replicas of the initial set of lights, fans and speakers that make up the PC peripheral range, Philips used THQ's high profile RTS title to demonstrate how additional ambient colour and other effects - similar in concept to Philips's successful Ambilight televisions range, where a backlight behind the screen matches colours in the content being displayed - will, according to US boss Stewart Muller, "blow gamers away: literally".
"It transforms the entire gaming experience," Muller said. "What you have is a wall-washer, which displays 16 million colours behind the computer screen. You have two desk fans which blow at different intensity levels depending on what's happening in the game. You have two satellite speakers with integrated lights. What's not shown here is the wrist-rumbler and the subwoofer.
"In essence, the amBX technology you have just felt represents a totally new software language that gives gamers an experience in the real world, not just the virtual world."
After the presentation, amBX chief marketing officer Jo Cooke claimed Supreme Commander is just the start in terms of top content becoming "amBX-enabled".
"THQ was the first publisher that signed with us, so we wanted to support them with today's demo," she said. "We've just signed a deal with Gas Powered Games - the developer of Supreme Commander - so I think it shows that we're committed to helping them bringing new technologies into their games. THQ was very happy to give us the content to use.
"There'll be plenty of other games," Cooke continued, "and we're looking at any new game that's coming out to see how different genres react with amBX, because it's not a genre-specific technology? It's absolutely our objective to make amBX a de facto technology that just should 'be there', in the same way surround sound applications are now.
"We're talking to all the publishers and we're looking for really key high profile games."
More information about how amBX peripherals will work with consoles will be announced at GDC 2007, which will take place in San Francisco this March.
"At GDC we will be showing how amBX might run from a console point of view," said Cooke. "Over the course of the next 12 months we'll be making announcements about what we're doing with other platforms, which platforms we support first and which software we support with it."
The initial line of amBX PC peripherals is launching in the US and Europe in the coming months, with CES seen as a platform the technology's launch in general.
The US kit is priced at US$ 199 for a starter kit which contains a directional wall-washer light, controller unit and satellite lights; US$ 299 for a Pro-Gamer Kit which includes a directional wall-washer light, a controller unit, satellite 2.1 speaker lights and subwoofer; US$ 99 for an Extension Kit featuring a set of desk fans and wrist-rumbler; and, for the "ultimate gamer", a US$ 399 Premium Kit which includes all of the above.
PC games which are currently amBX-enabled include Broken Sword: The Angel of Death, Toca Racing Driver 3 and DEFCON.

We're expecting Valve to update it's Steam service today, the update introducing new features that include Guest Passes, Background client updates and Games list Favorites. In addition, its receiving a makeover and getting a "new streamlined appearance" and will be available "in five different colors", the developer has explained.
Further word has been given on each new feature on the Steam website:
Guest Passes: Guest Passes allow owners of certain Steam games (purchased either via Steam or at retail) to let their friends play games for free, for a limited time trial. The first game to take advantage of this new feature will be Day of Defeat: Source. Beginning the week of January 8th, owners of DoD:S will each receive a guest pass to give to a friend. So if you own Day of Defeat: Source, watch your games list for your guest pass to appear, and then send it to a friend.
Background client updates: Since the Steam client was first released, it has always kept itself up to date -- but now it'll do so without making you wait during startup. Instead, it will acquire new updates in the background and then (once they're downloaded) ask if you'd like to restart & apply them. Steam will also let you know what's new whenever a new update is ready to apply.
Games list Favorites: Steam's catalog of games has grown quite a bit over the past year or so. If you're like most Steam users, the list of games you own has grown pretty long. Time to organize! Soon you'll be able to try out the new Favorites feature in the My Games tab of Steam. Once you've selected a game as a Favorite, it's available for quick access at the top of your list. If you wish, you can also collapse the Installed and Uninstalled sections, leaving only your Favorites in view.
New look: Steam's getting a new coat of paint. We've stripped away all the non-essentials and created a new streamlined appearance, and it'll be available in five different colors.

Microsoft has confirmed during its keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show yesterday that Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved will make the leap from Xbox 360 to PC in the near future.
With the game already hitting mobiles, it seems Bizarre is keen to spread the Geometry Wars love to as many gamers as possible. Anyone who has had any contact with the XBLA original will rant about how many hours it has stolen from their lives, with its addictive, psychedelic shoot-'em-up action ensuring that you'll be saying 'just one more go' well into the early hours.
No details have been given as to when the PC version of the game will be released or its pricing (fingers crossed for a budget, Live Arcade-style price), but we'll keep you posted.

Crytek and EA have released new footage from FPS Crysis, and we've just finished staring at it while saying things like 'Ooh', and, 'Aah'. A movie paints a thousand words - or something - so instead of us rabbiting on for another 100 words - or indeed 1000 - we'll shut the hell up and let you sit back and enjoy.

NCSoft's Tabula Rasa began sign-ups for beta testing this week. The sci-fi MMO, headed by Richard Garriott of Ultima fame, is a title that's been a long time coming. Showing at E3 2005 and 2006, with launch dates always shifting, there still is no reasonable explanation as to why this game is taking so long. We're sure to get another Tabula Rasa fix at Min-E3 and with any luck they'll finally nail down an official launch date.

If you were to take the opening sequence of Battlestar Galactica and make your own version of it with World of Warcraft in-game machinima, well then you'd have today's video. If they could pull off a Battlestar MMORPG, we'd be in there all day long, even if the subscription fee was $29.99 a month. There'd have to be enough copies of Number Six to go around, right?
An enterprising fan of both put this together proving once more that the world does indeed have a lot of extra time on its hands. The Egyptians built the pyramids, and we make wacky videos for the web. Check out the mashup after the jump and join us in trying to patiently wait for the next episode to come out.

When Electronic Arts announced at E3 2006 that it was reviving the Command & Conquer franchise with Tiberium Wars, many fans of the series rejoiced. Now, the truly hardcore fans of the real-time strategy franchise have even more reason to celebrate.
EA today announced that it will be releasing the Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars: Kane Edition--named after the series' popular villain--simultaneously with the game's standard edition in March 2007 for the PC. The publisher has not yet officially revealed the Kane Edition's price, but online retailer EBGames.com lists it at $59.99, $10 more than the standard edition.
The special edition includes a bonus DVD with several features, including a making-of documentary, strategy guides, and deleted scenes and bloopers from the game's live-action sequences. Also in the Kane Edition are five exclusive multiplayer maps, three exclusive unit skins, and a limited edition poster.
EA did not say if there would be a Kane Edition for the Xbox 360 version of C&C3, which is due in stores sometime this year.
