Counter-Strike players will be served ads by IGA's Radial dynamic in-game advertising network, according to a report on MCV. Further news on in-game ads in CS, coming via way of fan site CS-Nation, says that the adverts will actually only appear in Counter-Strike 1.6.
"Putting ads into our games is a new thing for us. Whenever we're testing something new, we try to be somewhat scientific - isolating the implementation so we can measure its success or failure. That's why we chose just one title", Valve's Doug Lombardi said when asked why the advertising was being limited to that particular game.

Presumably then, if it's a success, the in-game advertising will eventually spread to other Valve online games.
IGA sells the ad space to customers, Lombardi explained, adding that part of the plus side to the deal is a potential benefit to mod development and developers.
"...for a long time we've looked for new ways to let mod authors make money. Funding a game development project is currently a chicken and egg problem - you can't get funding without having already built a great product, and you can't build something great without money in the bank.
"If this experiment with advertising in CS 1.6 is successful, it may turn out that we're able to help the next round of successful mods get off the ground because of ad revenue."
Counter-Strike 1.6 players can expect to see adverts in numerous places, including posted on walls in levels, on the scoreboard screen and one in the letterboxed area of Spectator mode, Lombardi said.
