Source: Electronic Arts has reached a deal to purchase 19 percent of online game operator The9, which runs World of Warcraft in China, according to a Reuters report.
What we heard: While the Reuters story is a widely referenced source in online reports, it is itself a second-hand source, citing Shangai Securities News as the real origin of the news. According to Reuters, the foreign paper is reporting that EA has agreed to purchase a 19 percent stake in the company for about $200 million.
The news raises a red flag because The9 is the Chinese operator of Blizzard Entertainment and Vivendi Games' massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft. Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson sent investors a memo this morning telling them to treat the news as a rumor for now, even though he said it would be a positive for both companies and laid out some reasons why the deal could be legit.
Wilson noted that most licensing contracts like the one between Vivendi Games and The9 contain a clause preventing a competitor from taking control of a license, but that EA could get around that if the stake it purchased in The9 were small enough.
While EA could benefit from having its upcoming Warhammer MMO distributed in China by The9, Wilson said that could harm the Chinese company's relationship with Vivendi Games, something it would likely avoid if possible. Whatever EA's long-term plan for The9 might be, Wilson said it won't include a full acquisition, noting that Chinese law prevents foreign ownership of entertainment companies.
Analyst Michael Pachter sent out an investor note of his own, suggesting a pattern in EA's acquisition trends of late.
"Given EA's minority ownership of Ubisoft and The9, we remain skeptical that the company intends to make further acquisitions of public companies over the foreseeable future. We think that if the company were to choose to consolidate the industry, it would be fully occupied completing the acquisitions of either Ubisoft or The9, and do not believe that it is considering [mergers and acquisitions] activity with other public companies."
Neither the analysts nor Reuters were able to secure confirmation of the agreement. Not to question the veracity of Reuters or Shangai Securities News, but until one of the parties involved here steps forward and confirms the deal, it seems there's a chance the acquisition won't happen due to each company's tangled relationships with Vivendi Games.
The official story: "EA has not signed an agreement with The9. We do not comment on rumors about our investment strategies. EA recently announced a 19 percent equity agreement with Neowiz, a leading online-game publisher in Korea."--An EA representative.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus until the deal is done.

The BBC is carrying the story that the ANI flaw is being used to target World of Warcraft players, as hackers search for account details. 'Analysis of that malicious software showed that it lay dormant on a victims machine until they ran World of Warcraft (WoW) at which point it captured login data and sent it to the hacking group ... Research by security firm Symantec suggests that the raw value of a WoW account is now higher than a credit card and its associated verification data.'"
Doubtless, any compromised accounts would quickly see their equipment sold, and the resulting gold transferred to another account. This gold would then be sold for US currency to Real Money Traders like the company IGE.

Printer/scanner superstar Hewlett-Packard showed off its plans to enter the PC gaming market last night, and unsurprisingly there was an air of hostility towards those old-fangled games consoles the kids are talking about these days.
The first snipes came from a panel of industry leaders that included Games for Windows boss Rich Wickham and other gaming bods. "I believe the days of the console are numbered," said Trion World Network founder Lars Butler. "There is one more generation of gaming consoles and that is it," he claimed.
The broadband game publisher boss says that the gaming potential of PCs could render games consoles obsolete.
NVIDIA vice president Roy Taylor also painted a rosy future for the mouse and keyboard side of gaming: "Our advantage as developers is we know what is coming," he said. "And what is coming is far ahead of the console. You will see a
huge difference between what you can get on a PC (personal computer)
and a console."
HP plans to roll out a new line of gaming gear later this year including a curved computer display designed to immerse players in the action.
As PC tech climbs above the capabilities of the next-gen consoles it will certainly be interesting to see if the dooms day prophecies for PC gaming yet again turn out to be hot air.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - we can't wait. The talent of EA Mythic combined with Games Workshop's rich, established fantasy universe is surely, surely a recipe for MMORPG success. If it turns out to be crap, we'll... Well, that's just too painful to contemplate. C'mon EA Mythic, don't let us down!
The game should hit later this year, but in the meantime we're being given a look at the Chaos Magus, Chaos Zealot and Warrior Priest classes courtesy of 17 new screenshots.
Plus, the powers that be have also released a trailer showing the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning login page, which you can view in our video player. And, accompanying that is a vodcast detailing the Realm versus Realm combat which is core to Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

An initial wave of screenshots from NecroVision, a PC first-person shooter in development at The Farm 51, have been released. The game is using the engine that powered FPS Painkiller, so expect plenty of physics craziness.
NecroVision's storyline blends a World War One setting with horror, with the conflict occurring simultaneously with battle between demonic forces and vampires in the "underground worlds". We're still getting our head around that one, but anyway you get plonked into the middle of all this chaos as a young American chap who ends up fighting on both fronts and aiding the undead in fighting off the demon hordes and saving mankind.
Publisher Cenega, which has signed the title, elaborates, "Sceneries range from realistic to dream-like, opponents from enemy troops to fantasy creatures - old fashion look and style of the game is going to remind the world setting from the Lovecraft's horrors and seamlessly mix the war shooter elements into it.
"Player will fight enemies using environments, powerful and evil artifacts, vampire technology, and authentic WWI era weapons."
A release date for NecroVision is yet to be set in stone.

new tycoon game is coming to PCs this June that will let gamers visit the wards of a hospital and kill or cure the patients. Codemasters has announced it will be publishing the new title, Hospital Tycoon. The game has been developed by the Milton Keynes, UK-based team that worked on other Tycoon games, including Tycoon City: New York, Monopoly Tycoon, and Beach Life.
Hospital Tycoon Trailer
Watch | Download The game, in the same vein as gaming classic Theme Hospital, is described as a combination of traditional tycoon gameplay and a soap-opera-style storyline. The story will progress in episodes, with storylines including potential romance between Nurse Susie and Dr Dave, who seems oblivious to her charms. To see more of the gameplay, check out our exclusive trailer.
Hospital Tycoon takes a more lighthearted approach to the medical profession than games such as Trauma Centre: Second Opinion, with patients developing bizarre and humorous diseases including explosive sneezing, which launches them into the air, and monkey nuts, which makes them sprout hair and generally go ape.
The game is set at the Sapphire Beach Medical Institute. Players must train staff to improve their skill levels, choose to develop friends or make enemies, and maintain the different departments of the hospital--including surgery, diagnosis, and physiotherapy.
Codemasters producer Jamie Firth commented, "The game's characters all have individual personalities with likes and dislikes; it's up to you to put them together (or keep them apart) as you see fit. Encourage a particular doctor and nurse to spend more time together, for example, and you'll soon see their relationships take on a flirtier or even downright amorous tone. (Yes, even kissing has been motion-captured). Likewise, you can put chalk-and-cheese characters together to watch the sparks fly."
Hospital Tycoon will be a PC-exclusive game and will be released worldwide in June.

Guild Wars dev ArenaNet has explained it's not its intention to chase after World of Warcraft, or indeed other games in the genre, with its sequel Guild Wars 2.
Speaking to CVG in a recent interview, ArenaNet founder Jeff Strain described Guild Wars 2 as "a very different kind of game to World of Warcraft", saying that it's not the developer's goal to offer things above and beyond the Blizzard behemoth - rather, it's about delivering an experience unique in the MMOG space.
"We're pursuing a design mechanic that's unique to the Guild Wars franchise", Strain said.
"It's certainly not our intention to go and chase after any other MMO on the market. We think that those players that enjoy those kinds of games are probably going to enjoy World of Warcraft and we think that Guild Wars will continue to be a unique experience."
"So it'll stand up on its own and have it's own set of features and own design direction", Strain added.
In the interview, he also cleared up any confusion surrounding the inclusion of Guild Wars' instance dynamic in the sequel.
"...it's one of the most powerful features of Guild Wars 1 and one of the features we think really makes it stand out. So that will still be a core foundation of Guild Wars 2", Strain told us.
"But we want to use the addition of persistent world to also explore other types of gameplay... it's absolutely not the case that we're dropping instancing technology, we'll continue to carry that forward because we think it's one of the foundational pillars of Guild Wars."

Those of you experiencing problems when trying to play Battlefield 2, 1942 and 2142 online will be pleased to know that EA is aware of the problem, and normal service should resume around midday.
"It was an unforeseen technical hitch, and we're still working on it at the moment. We hope it will be up by midday today," a spokesperson for EA told Eurogamer this morning. "Obviously and unfortunately these things do happen, and we apologise to all of the consumers let down by this."
There was no word on what the problem actually boiled down to, but rumours continue to fly around that some disgruntled virtual war-loons may have carried out a covert DDOS attack on the servers.
According to the EA Games forums, the technical hiccups started sometime on Sunday, and have carried through until today. And while there's a mob of angry customers calling for an immediate solution, it seems the biggest gripe is that EA hasn't kept the community informed, leaving its loyal fan base in the dark.
Still, a fix is just around the corner. So it's back to your war games this afternoon.
The Battlefield games pitch two teams against each other in an online strategic war game, letting you control land and air vehicles, as well as assault the enemy on foot.

BioWare has licensed the StreamBase technology for its upcoming yet-to-be-revealed MMO, which is in development at its Austin studio.
Apparently Streambase will allow BioWare to make fixes to the game world in real-time and react quickly to naughty exploitative players.
The tech has traditionally been provided for "processing and analyzing real-time streaming data" to telecom and financial companies, but with the online gaming boom StreamBase apparently fancies its chances in the gaming sector as well.
"After we evaluated the StreamBase CEP software, we quickly realized that partnering with them would cut our server development costs by multiple man years," said BioWare technical director Bill Dalton. "Therefore, partnering with StreamBase was clearly the right choice to deliver on budget and on time."
There are currently no announced details on the MMO, though company veteran James Ohlen - previously lead designer on Baldur's Gate and KoTOR - is known to be at the helm, which has us very excited.

Good news for those of you anticipating the launch of Funcom's MMORPG Age of Conan on PC - beta sign-ups kick off today!
There's no confirmed date for the start of the beta yet, but with the developer saying it'll give us the opportunity to play the game month's before release, it can't be too far off. On PC, Age of Conan is due to release on October 30.
An Xbox version of the MMORPG is also in development.
Go to beta.ageofconan.com to sign up. As per usual with these things, submitting an application for the beta doesn't guarantee you'll be called up.
"We have been waiting for this day since we started development on Age of Conan, and it will be an epic moment as we see large waves of players charging into Hyboria", Funcom founder and Age of Conan game director Gaute Godager has said of the arrival of the beta sign-up.
"As we get ready to unleash the most brutal MMO ever created we will let an increasing amount of players test our creation. With extended Beta testing for months to come we can hone and polish based on large-scale feedback, allowing us to fulfil the potential of the game."

Ah, Quake Wars you gorgeous little devil you. We want to set you on our mantelpiece and gaze longingly into your thousand-yard stare. But seeing as we can't do that just yet as the developers are still feverishly sticking polygons together with bits of code, for now we'll settle for new screenshots.
And that's seven new screenshots, which we've uploaded here so you can join us in our adoration. Don't be afraid to express your love in the comments field below.
The new Quake Wars screenshots follow earlier news from id Software that the multiplayer shooter, which is in development for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, won't support cross-platform play. Which is probably just as well 'cos the console jockeys would get seriously pwned.

It's clear, after viewing the latest trailer from Funcom's Age of Conan, that the developer is pulling out all the stops to create one of the most visually impressive environments ever seen in the massively multiplayer online RPG genre. Just take a look at the movie, titled Eiglophian Mountains. Very nice, no?
Of course, you'll need a super-spec PC to get the game running at this level of visual niceness, but hey we can still look on and go 'OOOooh'.

We have to say, on a visual nicey-nicey level, that these are probably the best screenshots we've seen from EA's Medal of Honor: Airborne to date. Press your face up to your monitor screen and see what you think.
EA's WWII FPS series has been trumped by Call of Duty, but Airborne could, could just be the game that sees Medal of Honor reclaim its throne. A big deal is being made about the freeform nature of the gameplay, players as members of 82nd Airborne Division able to determine their own starting point in levels when parachuting in from the skies.
There's no confirmed release date for Airborne, but we're hoping to see it this year.

Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars executive producer Mike Verdu has apologised about the game's online performance, saying patches are being prepared to sort out all the issues some players are having in multiplayer.
"While I'm delighted that people are having a blast with the single player campaign and skirmish modes of the game, I'm disappointed that we've had some teething problems with the online multiplayer. Most of our customers are able to play online, but I know that a number of you are having trouble - and I owe you an apology.
"Some of you can't connect to C&C Online and others are having issues once online. This is unacceptable, especially for a product that we designed for competitive multiplayer game play. I am sorry that you are encountering problems and I want you to know that the development team is working very hard to understand the issues, fix the bugs that affect the largest numbers of people, and roll out patches as quickly as possible."
But there are plans for two more patches to be released in days: "We have issued one patch already and we have two more in the works. I believe we have a bead on the issues that affect the most people and I expect that we will solve these problems in a matter of days.
"Just to be clear: not everyone is having problems playing online... the majority of people are able to get online, play games, and a have a great time. For those that are having problems, please bear with us. We will fix these issues and make C&C the great online multiplayer game it was designed to be - and we ask for your patience as we work through the issues."

- In "Hani In The Sky", The problem with a rough scroll was corrected.
- Additionally, a detailed part has been improved and corrected.

This may feel like Groundhog Day for you and Steve Ballmer, but according to computer and component manufacturers, Vista is not the hotcake that they were hoping for. The not-so-shiny-shiny-anymore OS is not helping sales at all and some companies may end with a whole bunch of unsold stuff in their warehouses.
Take Acer's president, Gianfranco Lanci, who has just said that "PC makers are really not counting on Vista to drive high demands for the industry." Or Samsung Electronics, who now says that DRAM demand has not matched anyone's predictions based on Vista's now failed projections, something that is being echoed by the industry as a whole.
So forget about Señor Gates' words on Vista pushing PC sales. You may want to punch us, Bill, but apparently those 20 million copies sold are indeed business as usual.

A full six months after announcing it, Y-E Data is ready to ship their YD-300 wireless USB hub. While this hub reportedly packs the same (or at least similar) Multiband OFDM radio from Wisair we've already seen in the Belkin Cable-Free USB hub, we don't see a "Certified Wireless USB" sticker anywhere... so who knows. While they promise up to 480Mbps at distances of up to 10-meters, in practice however, this drops to a paltry 30Mbps (max!) and even that degrades significantly over just a few meters. You can forget HD streaming since there's no support for isochronous data, quality of service, or medium bandwidth reservation to ensure data arrives in time. But hey, it makes a fine ¥39,800 ($338) solution for moving your keyboard a bit further away from the monitor.
