id Software has significant plans for its Enemy Territory series judging by the words spilling out its mouth during a recent interview on the forthcoming Quake Wars.
Speaking to PC Zone magazine about what's next for ET, id's Kevin Cloud explained the developer is "keen to start on a new world in a new ET, building on what we've done".
Quite where a new Enemy Territory would be set is open to speculation - Cloud didn't go into specifics - but there's already a number of ideas bouncing around that could feature in the next game.
"When you work on a game you get a ton of ideas, and sometimes you have gameplay mechanics that won't fit into the structure - you can't just plug them in. They're just sitting on the table - ideas that myself and Paul [Wedgewood, head of Splash Damage] have talked about", Cloud said.
He added that the Enemy Territory's future "will certainly be something to look forward too...".
We'd expect nothing less.

One of gaming's biggest franchises is one step closer to making its return to the limelight this month. The PC version of Electronic Arts' Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars has gone gold and is expected to be in stores on March 26.
"Everyone fights, noone quits!"
Tiberium Wars is the first game in the series since 2003's Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour, and brings back one of the trademarks of the early games in the franchise--live-action video. Full-motion video cutscenes return with a bang, sporting the acting talent of sci-fi vets Josh Holloway (Lost), Billy Dee Williams (The Empire Strikes Back), Tricia Helfer, (Battlestar Galactica), as well as Joe Kucan, who reprises his role as the arch-villain Kane. Also appearing is Michael Ironside (pictured), voice of Sam Fisher in the Splinter Cell games and star of sci-fi classics such as Starship Troopers and Total Recall.
EA also announced that several PC gamers have already done a few tours of Tiberium Wars, as the demo for the game was downloaded more than 1 million times in its first week. The demo, which includes a tutorial and two single-player missions, is currently available from GameSpot Downloads.
Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is rated T for Teen and will retail for $49.99. An Xbox 360 version is also in the works and will be released later this year.

While defending the strengths of the PC market, Half-Life 2 developer Valve has questioned Microsoft's Games for Windows push.
Microsoft is currently in the middle of an initiative that involves branding PC titles as Games for Windows, clearly labelling safety features, compatibility and ease of instillation.
But Valve is doubtful that Microsoft is backing PC gaming in the long term, suggesting that the initiative is under way purely to help increase sales of new operating system Vista.
"Right now it seems like it's part of the marketing push to help Vista," commented Doug Lombardi, marketing manager at Valve, in an exclusive interview for GamesIndustry.biz.
"To really back a platform is a sustained effort over years and years, so we'll see if in two years Microsoft is still spending money to put Games for Windows sections in retail, and having PR people preach that message that the PC isn't dying, it’s actually bigger than all the consoles put together."
"You know, if it were to sign up for that, that's great. If it's going to use it to promote sales of Vista, that's really not good for the industry, it's good for Microsoft in the short term," offered Lombardi.
Valve is a staunch defender of the PC, and points to the success of alternative revenue streams as evidence that the death of PC gaming is a myth.
Although NPD data ignores PC sales at retail, and episodic content and the sale of casual titles is also untracked, Lombardi sees the market as healthier than it is for some home consoles.
"Sony and Microsoft both have armies of PR people whose job it is to cram that information down the throats of press and analysts every day," said Lombardi.
"All those people do is say the PC's dying, the console's winning, and nobody on the PC side is championing that platform. And sales data tracks retail, and there's no doubt about it, PC sales at retail are declining."
Lombardi points out that, "World of Warcraft is making a whole lot of money outside of the retail channel, we're making a decent bit of cash off Steam, all the casual guys are not tracked - the PopCap games, Bejewelled, all that stuff doesn't show up."
"If you took World of Warcraft, Steam, PopCap and added it to the PC pool, all these huge revenues - just WOW by itself, right? If you took WOW's 2006 revenues and the 360's revenues and compared them, even then you would say I don't think the PC's really dead," he concluded.

March 12th, 2007, 20:39 Posted By: wraggster
Ankama Studio believes gamers are tired of being unable to affect change and evolve the environments they play in - something it hopes to change in its freshly unveiled title, Wakfu.
"Until now, MMORPGs have offered universes where everything was under control, where players' actions had very little impact on the world they inhabit," Ankama told Eurogamer.
"We are convinced that players are getting bored of such things, they are seeking a game with social interactions in which they could leave their mark and history in the game's universe."
And that's where Wakfu - an online fantasy adventure that's trying to hand the power back to the people - comes in, by disregarding traditional computer-controlled characters in favour of player-given quests and tasks.
"There will be no NPCs in Wakfu, so the only available quests will be the ones other players have created," the developer added.
"For example, an island governor could decide to reward players killing the creatures threatening his city. Therefore, quests should not be as repetitive, have more possibilities, and depend on the community's implication."
It all joins Ankama's vision of "perpetual evolution", where the world evolves around the players. You can even put the ecosystem out of balance by chopping down too many trees, or by eating too many pigs.
Wakfu will also attempt to catch your eye in the graphical department, not with a buffed-up polygon count, but with a cartoon-inspired style. However, the biggest difference between this and other MMOs so far, Ankama insists, is its action-orientated combat, which won't be another press-button-and-wait affair, despite being turn-based in origin.
"The biggest difference we would like to insist on, at this point of the game development, is Wakfu's fighting system. It is a turn-based system that encourages action and tactics, and not forcing a player to wait for others to finish their turns," the collective voice added.
You'll still find all your traditional role-playing guff in here, like 12 different classes, skills that level up as you use them, professions, guilds, parties and whatnot.
There's also a familiar subscription element, though it's been given a little twist. You see, you'll be able to play the game for free, but only a limited portion, meaning you'll have to delve into your wallet if you like what you see, unlocking the wide world of content that awaits.
Unfortunately there's currently no release date for the game, but beta testing is expected to begin around July.
If you can't wait that long, you can always give Dofus a try. It's Ankama's first MMO that's set 1,000 years before Wakfu, and boasts more than three million players worldwide. It's available to play right now, but if you hold on until April, Ankama is releasing dedicated UK servers as well as an exclusive storyline for the region.

To celebrate its joining the glitzy golden ranks of gaming, Frictional Games has released a tasty demo for Penumbra: Overture, ahead of the first episodic instalment due on 30th March.
You'll get a chance to test-drive the first couple of levels, experiencing the advanced physics as you twist your brain into knots trying solving puzzles. Toddle over to the game's website to snatch the demo.
Penumbra: Overture is a first-person survival horror shindig that's based around puzzles rather than action. You'll play as Philip, whose search for his presumed dead father uncovers more than he was expecting, and he soon finds himself trapped in an underground complex in Greenland. As you do.
Here you'll have to use your wits over your braun, outsmarting your enemy rather than thumping them in the face.
The game will be released in three episodes, the first of which will cost you GBP 14.99 and is out at the end of the month.

Nival Interactive's WWII RTS Frontline: Fields of Thunder, which focuses on the battle for the Kursk Salient - one of the major tank engagements from WWII - can be taken for spin in a demo that's recently released.
The demo features two levels, The Berezov village and Artillery at work, and drops you into the combat boots of Soviet forces. Both missions are detailed below:
The Berezov village: Beat back waves of German forces in different strategic locations. As the Germans will attack on multiple sides, your defense needs to be organized so that they cannot break through from either side. As each assault is defeated, the player will receive reinforcements and get a new objective.
Artillery at work: Defend the heights from German assaults. The enemy is using both armour and air power, so be prepared for possible air strikes and to use your interceptors and artillery. Help colonel Borisov hold his position while keeping an eye out for German scouting parties. Experience battle with heavy armoured vehicles, such as "Tigers" and "Ferdinands", which will require you to both be cautious and act rapidly. And do not forget about the enemy's long-range artillery and air force.
Grab the demo here.
Frontline: Fields of Thunder is out on April 6 in the UK and comes bundled with freebie Hearts of Iron II.

Fireglow's RPG-RTS hybrid Stranger is strutting its fantasy stuff in a new gameplay trailer released - which you can view via our video player.
Expected in May, the game throws players into a swords and sorcery world where they command numerous units and three main heroes and, well, beat the crap out of stuff. Fireglow's making a big deal about Stranger's crystal-dependent spell and item enchantment system that, so they say, affords magic a massive degree of flexibility and the title's level (as in 'underground', 'overground')design which lets you battle on several levels at the same time.

PC RTS series Codename Panzers is rolling back into action in Cold War, a brand new game set in the early 1950s and during the Cold War - no, really. First screenshots released provide a glimpse of the reworked Panzers graphics engine employed for this latest outing. Check out the media and see what you think.
Conflict between NATO and the Soviet Union in Cold War kicks off when a US airplane's collision with a Russian fighter jet ruptures the already tense relations between the two powers. Developed by Stormregion, the game is due at the end of the year. Seeing as the original Codename Panzers was a decent RTS, we'd say it's worth keeping an eye on.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC has spoken about the freeform foundation the game's been built on in an interview with CVG, part one of which has been published on the site today.
Oleg Yavorsksy, senior PR manager at GSC, has explained that the developer has created the game with "big freedom in mind", with a view to giving the player free rein in deciding precisely how they want to experience what's placed before them.
"Gameplay", said Yavorsksy, is "structured in accordance with the way the player constructs it - be it secretive, stealthy operations full of ambushing or lightning-fast assaults." He continued, "Some players may opt for exploration and trading, while others will become a warrior."
"It is the freedom that provides a platform for a game you cannot play the same way twice."
A "vast territory and huge world" has been created to accommodate this freedom, a world "populated by a variety of creatures impacted by bizarre and unknown laws, bearing both peril and glory," adds Yavorsksy. We can't wait to sling on a Geiger counter and stalk into the finished game. And that's now only days away.

A new MMOG is in the works from Puzzle Pirates creator Three Rings. The web-based virtual environment of Whirled will favor player-created content and social interaction over character development and time-consuming quests for the Magical Boots of Running +5. A Flash-based interface will allow for easy creation of items, furniture, avatars, and even complex multiplayer games.
Three Rings is to casual MMO games as Blizzard Entertainment is to life-dominating MMO games. Puzzle Pirates and Bang! Howdy are two of the most well-known indie MMOGs out there. If Whirled builds on the success, Three Rings executives will be lounging in private yachts right next to the Blizzard folk.

Metaboli has bolstered its games on demand service today by adding Maelstrom to its impressive catalogue of downloadable PC titles.
The latest addition joins other recent recent releases including Rogue Trooper, Raving Rabbids, and the Dawn of War Anthology.
It follows a successful year for Metaboli, which beefed up its 2007 offerings recently thanks to an exclusive deal with THQ to bring the publisher's latest and greatest online.
Word has it that blockbusters S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Supreme Commander will also be added to the service in the future, as well as more imminent additions such as Just Cause, TrackMania Sunrise Extreme, and Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened.
All you have to do to play is choose whether you want all the latest releases, which will cost you GBP 12.95 a month, or if you can make do with a slightly cut-down library for GBP 6.95 each month.
Once you've joined, you'll be able to play until your heart's content, finally delving into a fully-patched game you may not have had the PC to tackle when it was released.

Publisher Activision has announced that several key titles from its PC portfolio are to be made available online using Macrovision's digital distribution solution.
Six headline games will initially be launched on Macrovision's games network - including three Call of Duty titles (the original game, expansion pack United Offensive, and sequel Call of Duty 2), Neversoft's action western Gun, role-playing title Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines, and Lionhead's Hollywood sim The Movies.
Macrovision claims to have over 300 online distribution channels around the world, and currently distributes over 1700 games across the network. The firm protects the titles it distributes using its own Digital Rights Management solution.
"It has become clear that gamers are embracing the digital distribution of games," explained Activision's online publishing boss Jon Estanislao. "Activision is committed to delivering its content across multiple distribution channels and Macrovision has the ability to protect, and increase the reach of our games to our fans."
This isn't Activision's first foray into digital distribution, either - the firm has already made its titles available on other services including Valve's extremely high-profile Steam network, which was originally used to distribute the award-winning Half-Life 2.

Eve Online players will soon be able to chat to each other during the game developer CCP has announced.
Called 'Eve Voice', the fully integrated chat software will offer Eve players high quality audio, player-to-player direct chat, group chat, sub-group chat, group leader talk, map integration and moderator controls.
The move is an effort by CCP to draw users away from third-party unsupported programs like Ventrilo and TeamSpeak, which it claims require dedicated servers, eat up system resources and require paid-for licenses to unlock all the features and capabilities.
Eve Voice will be available from late March 2007, and will be an optional addition costing US$ 10 for one year's usage.
"We recently had a fleet battle with more than 1,000 players in one sector of the EVE universe. The amount of communication between those players in planning and executing these maneuvers is vast," said Magus Bergsson, chief marketing officer at CCP.
"Adding integrated voice will not just enhance gameplay by accelerating those plans and allowing players to react quickly as situations unfold in-game, but it will give combat pilots a strategic advantage."
Eve Online launched in 2003, and has built a steady and dedicated player base. Chose from being a trader to a mercenary as you explore the galaxy in your own starship, brokering deals or waging war along the way.

Fresh news on Gears of War's PC destiny has appeared on The Inquirer.net, which reports that "Epic is planning and working on the conversion".
In fact, Epic's Mark Rein has said the shooter will come to PC soon, according to the website.
Speaking in February about Gears of War on PC, Rein said the version was inevitable but explained that it could be a few years before it materialised due to technology issues.
Have those issues then been swiftly overcome? Stay tuned for updates.
