Crytek's impressive new technology that's powering its equally impressive FPS Crysis is to be used by company Avatar Reality to build a massively multiplayer virtual world (MMVW).
It makes Avatar the first company to license Crytek's new engine - CryENGINE 2 - and the MMVW will be a terraformed Mars where people can "live their fantasy lives by creating personalized characters, or avatars, in a beautiful environment."
So a bit like Total Recall then maybe but minus Arnold Schwarzenegger and the tons of brutal violence.

Helping wave the PC flag at Electronic Art's GDC press reception last night was Flagship Studios' Hellgate: London.
We didn't get to spend much time with the RPG due to the abundance of PC-loving Germans in the building, but as usual it was looking in top form and certainly has plenty to be appreciated when it hits the streets this Summer.
The new trailer demonstrates the different Templars and their skills, as well as showing the sort of post-apocalyptic Tube destruction we dream of every day. Enjoy!

March 7th, 2007, 21:02 Posted By: wraggster
Emotiv Systems today unveiled a brain/computer interface system with a helmet and software applications at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The Project Epoc system can move objects based on a gamer's thoughts, reflect facial expressions and respond to the excitement or calm the gamer mentally exerts, the company said.
Sensors in the helmet pick up on electric signals in the brain. The system software analyzes the signals emitted by the brain and then wirelessly relays what it detects to a receiver. The receiver is plugged into the USB port of a game console or PC, according to Randy Breen, Emotiv's chief product officer.
As with handwriting or voice recognition, the machine itself has a learning curve, improving as it better understands what the player is thinking, but there is also a skill level involving visualization on the part of the gamer.
Anecdotally, the system seems to work best with children and others open to believing in their capability, according to Breen. It seems that gamers who believe in their ability to manipulate the virtual world with their brain--the kind of people who are skilled at using their imagination, in other words--are better at using the device.
"The detection works best when you think about that action in a particular way, repeating that thought pattern," Breen said.
"We have had a number of kids try the equipment, and they often get the best results right away," Breen said. "Part of that is because the kid doesn't have the same kind of barriers as an adult does. Lots of kids can fantasize about moving a cup and believe it."
Adults, on the other hand, are more definitive in their thinking and thus have a barrier to believing that they can do something out of the ordinary, Breen said.
While almost anyone can do at least one action with the device, Breen said some adults require practice to master up to three simultaneous actions.
The helmet shown at the show is only a prototype to demonstrate to game developers what can be done with the technology. While Emotiv is not yet ready to announce any partnerships, Breen did say the product will be coming to market in 2008.
In conjunction with Project Epoc's debut, the company launched a kit for game developers Wednesday. Emotiv also announced that it is developing its technology for use in other industries, including medicine, security, market research and interactive television.
Emotiv, which was founded in 2003, has offices both in Sydney, Australia, and San Francisco. The company counts among its investors the Australian government. One of its four co-founders is Allan Snyder, director of The Centre for the Mind, a joint venture of the Australian National University and the University of Sydney. Steven Duvall, the director of technology for Intel Capital's International Sector, serves as an adviser to the company.

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade sold 3.5 million units in its first month on sale, Blizzard has announced.
European gamers snaffled up more than 1.6 million of those, America over 1.9 million, and Australasia topped 100,000. The game launched in Korea on 12th February, and is currently being translated for Chinese regions.
The figures smashed previous records for PC game sales, and have helped push the subscriber population of the game over 8.5 million.
"We're thrilled about the overwhelming response that we've received for The Burning Crusade," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "We have worked hard to build upon nearly every aspect of World of Warcraft with this expansion, and it's gratifying to see that players and reviewers are enjoying the new content."
The news coincides with the release of a new patch for the game, v2.0.10, which fixes numerous class skills and talents introduced by the expansion. It also fiddles with the price of arena PvP rewards, by adjusting the amount of points needed for specific items. There's the normal barrage of bits and bobs that have been tweaked, and you can quest to the furthest reaches of the Internet for more information.
Blizzard has also recently released a beta-test for the new searchable database service, The Armory. Here you can check out information taken from live servers, and find out in-depth information about other characters, arena teams and guilds. Head over to the website for a closer look.
The Burning Crusade is the first expansion pack for Blizzard's online adventure World of Warcraft. It increased the level cap to 70, added two new races, a new profession, flying mounts, plus scores of new equipment and quests. You can see what we made of it all elsewhere on the site.

March 7th, 2007, 20:08 Posted By: wraggster
NCsoft has announced it will be adding crafting to City of Heroes / Villains by introducing a new Invention System, which will allow players to equip user-created items to enhance a character's super powers.
"We tried to think of new, exciting things that enhancements could bring to the game," said lead designer Scott Miller.
"We determined that adding mini-powers to your existing ones had a lot of potential, as the sky would nearly be the limit on what we could accomplish with these new enhancements."
Each new item will be created from recipes and ingredients that will be mugged from your enemies. Different types of Invention Salvage will be stripped from different types of enemy, so magical foes will produce magical salvage, and science-based opponents will drop science-themed loot.
Meanwhile, there's now an option to create Invention Sets: groups of enhancements that all slot into a single power, and which increase in potency as you add more items to the set. All of your super-power boosters will permanently bolster your spandex hero's powers, and some will add new bonuses such as extra health or faster endurance recovery.
An orgasmic chart to illustrate proceedings.
"These bonuses are powerful, they are always active, independent of the power they are slotted into, and encompass your entire character giving them things like Defenses or Resistances, or an overall boost to their Damage," Miller added.
The better the invention, the harder it will be to come by, and unique enhancements are only usable once per set.
NCsoft hopes this will give you a myriad of possibilities to slot and build your character, making personal decisions for your character and playstyle.
The new addition will be tested behind closed doors for now, opening for public scrutiny when NCsoft deems it ready.
Miller continued: "We are proud of this new system and not only do we hope that our existing players will love it, but we also think this is a compelling reason for new players to get in and check it out!"

If you want to know what literal difference the new DirectX 10 graphics drivers will bring to new PC games, check out these new Age of Conan screens.
The most notable difference is in the backdrops - where DX9 cuts down background detail to a minimum, DX10 will fill your screen with detail be it near or far.
The bump-mapping is also far more prominent with the new technology, and we're sure it could look even better than this, too (bearing Crysis in mind).
Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures is a Funcom-developed action RPG do to release on Xbox 360 and PC in October.

Tabula Rasa has escaped the confines of this week's GDC floor in a trailer which has made its way to our video player yonder right. Clickety-click, sit back and enjoy the show.
Created by Richard Garriott and his crew at Destination Games, the MMORPG thrusts players into future cosmic war where the galaxy's last free sentient beings are fighting against extinction. Shooter-style action is being dropped into a persistent game world with traditional MMORPG elements, players traversing alien landscapes and battling aggressors.
The trailer runs for around a minute-and-half but you don't actually get to see any gameplay till around 30 seconds in. Still, stick with it because we reckon it's worth the watch. We're hoping Tabula Rasa turns out to be a enjoyable sci-fi romp.

$49.99 for a year. $19.99 for three months. $7.99 for one month. That's how much subscription to Windows Live Gold membership will cost in North America, according to a report on Game Informer.
This is identical to the cost of Gold membership subscription on Xbox Live over the pond. Like Xbox Live, a Silver level of service on Windows Live will be free.
We assume that UK pricing for Windows Live Gold will be identical to Xbox Live Gold in this case. One these shores, it's £39.99 for a year's subscription, £14.99 for three months.
What will you get for your money? Well, that's not been fully revealed but it's expected that Gold membership will be required to play cross-platform multiplayer between PC and Xbox 360 - with Shadowrun, for example.
In addition, it's recently been made public knowledge that with Halo 2 Vista, a Gold membership lets players earn achievements (a points system for bragging rights, essentially) in multiplayer as well as single-player. You can play multiplayer with a Silver membership, but can only earn achievements in single-player.
Game Informer's report goes on to say that existing subscribers to Xbox Live Gold automatically count as subscribers to Windows Live Gold, adding that your "gamer tag and achievements will be used across both Xbox and Vista PCs."

Details have emerged on Halo 2 Vista's map editor and what the Halo community will be able to do with it.
While Halo 2 might be very old news for the Xbox audience, the upcoming PC Vista release will contain a few features we wish we'd got to play with on the Xbox version - namely being able to create your own maps and share them over Live.
According to Game Informer the PC version will ship with a map editor that'll allow gamers to create and share maps online, just like almost every other FPS on PC. The tool will give bedroom coders access to the assets used by Bungie and allow them to build new geometry as well as importing your own assets.
But do PC gamers really care about Halo 2? Is this something you're going to sweat over? Aren't there better alternatives out there already? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
There will still be no cross-play for PC and Xbox gamers though But we're crossing our fingers that the final release of Halo 3 on 360 will include a similar (albeit watered down) map editor. Just thinking about what the community surrounding the game will create is enough to make you dizzy.

The MMORPG has already touched the hearts of millions worldwide but its campaign for world domination doesn't look like ending anytime soon.
Latest subscriber numbers for World of Warcraft have topped a staggering 8.5 million users. Wow, indeed.
That's almost as crazy as this bloke accused of stealing women's undies from a shop at knifepoint believing he was a female elf after playing an RPG. That's a warning to you all that is...
Accompanying subscriber figures is news that expansion The Burning Crusade has sold approximately 3.5 millions copies total in WoW-powered territories since its launch. TBC sales hit close to 2.4 million units worldwide in its first 24 hours of availability, and it's "now established the new one-month record for PC game sales", says Blizzard.

Funcom has confirmed with CVG that it's working on a brand new MMOG, informing us that the game is set on Earth in the present day.
Although reluctant to spill a ton of details due to the game being very early in development, the developer's product manager Erling Ellingsen did say that the project is definitely PC-bound, with an Xbox 360 version "most likely" too.
He went on the explain that members of Funcom's Dreamfall team have been brought over to work on the project - but it's not a Dreamfall MMOG, Ellingsen said - and that the title will use a tweaked version of the engine being employed for Age of Conan.
We queried Ellingsen about timings for an official announcement, be he wouldn't confirm specifics.

Wrapping up the Monday sessions at GDC's Independent Games Summit, Valve's lovely Kim Swift has taken to the podium to share a few words on how she went from student developer to working on the head-flipping Half-Life FPS Portal.
Surprisingly, Swift points much of her game's success to "the Nintendo factor", which she says helped her straighten out the gameplay in her original student project Narbacular Drop - on which Portal is based.
"We wanted our game to have the Nintendo factor," she told the GDC audience. "We wanted to create one piece of gameplay that could be used for a whole bunch of different things."
"So for example Mario jumps, but with that jump people can do a whole bunch of other things; he can jump on enemies, he can break blocks, he can collect power ups. We wanted the same thing in Narbacular drop too - we wanted portals to be used not just to run away but to be used for a whole bunch of other things."
Swift also reveals that it took "about the same time" to develop both Narbacular Drop and Portal, with most of the gameplay mechanics up and running in just 8 months. "This was all our work; all seven of us poured our heart and soul into Portal," she says.
Look for more Portal info nuggets in the wee hours of tomorrow morning, when we'll brave jetlag and heavily-salted snacks to go hands-on with the puzzle-FPS.

The next chapter in NCSoft's and ArenaNet's Guild Wars MMOG series is named Eye of the North and is due for release in Q3 this year, it's being reported.
According to The Inquirer, the Eye of the North is targeted at max-level characters and features "18 new multi-level dungeons, 40 new armour sets, 10 new Heroes and massive 150 new skills, out of which 50 belong only to PvE".
It's said the new chapter will also conclude events in Tyria following the end of Guild Wars: Prophecies, and seemingly too mark the end of Guild Wars.
An NCSoft representative declined to comment on this information when contacted earlier.
The Inquirer's report goes on to claim details on Guild Wars 2. It says the sequel is currently pencilled in for release 2009-to-2010 - with a public beta test scheduled for 2008 - features a revamped graphics engine and is set hundreds of years after Prophecies and Eye of the North. Mention is additionally made of zone-wide events likened to World of Warcraft's Battlegrounds.

A new trailer for Shadowrun has indicated that PC gamers wanting to play against Xbox 360 owners online will need a Live Gold Account.
A caption, pointed out by Joystiq, displayed in the closing scenes of the trailer reads: "Cross platform play requires Xbox Live Gold account and hard drive (on Xbox 360), or Games for Windows - Live Gold account (on Windows)."
So, the chance to batter pad-using console n00bs is one incentive for PC owners to cough up the cash for a Gold account - Microsoft has informed us that an announcement regarding Windows Live will be made later today. Keep eyes peeled for more details, then.
