April 13th, 2007, 20:51 Posted By: wraggster
Bethesda has acquired the entire Fallout IP from Interplay for $5.75m, a Securities and Exchange Commission filing brought to our attention by Shacknews reveals.
As part of the acquisition deal Bethesda, currently developing Fallout 3 after acquiring the rights to the sequel in 2004, has licensed Fallout MMOG rights out to Interplay.
Interplay's interest in creating a Fallout MMOG has made headlines previously, last December a Securities and Exchange Commission filing stating that the planned budget for the project totalled a whopping $75,000,000.
Now the Fallout IP shoe is fully on Bethesda's foot, Interplay has to meet several conditions to maintain its grip on the MMOG license under its agreement deal with the Oblivion dev.
For example, the Securities and Exchange Commission filing states that "full-scale development" of the project must commence within 24 months of the effective date (April 9) of the agreement, and that by the time development begins Interplay must have "secured financing for the FALLOUT MMOG in an amount no less than US$30,000,000.00".
It's stated too in the filing that the MMOG "shall meet or exceed such quality standards as may be set by Bethesda from time to time".
Under the agreement, Interplay is tasked with launching the Fallout MMOG within fours years after development commences on the game.
However, also under the agreement between Bethesda and Interplay, if the game doesn't launch during this four-year period then the deadline can be extended a year should Interplay indicate to Bethesda its "good faith belief that it will Commercially Launch the FALLOUT MMOG within 12 months after the conclusion of such 4-year period".
Or in other words, the Fallout MMOG could well not release until 2014.

Bright Side of the Moon has been revealed as the final episode in season one of Telltale's Sam & Max adventure revival. It'll debut on GameTap on April 26, and then be made available worldwide on May 10.
Telltale says of Bright Side of the Moon's plot, "What started out as a local mind-control scheme has grown to global proportions, with links to the media, the mafia, the U.S. government, and the world wide web. Now it's up to canine shamus Sam and his mildly psychotic rabbity-thing sidekick Max to storm a bizarre lunar paradise and confront the mastermind behind the plot. But will they be able to deliver the unassuming world populace from the jaws of tranquility and prevent an eternity of hypnotic enslavement?"
Dan Connors, CEO at Telltale, says that the finale stands on its own as a game, "but it's going to be especially satisfying for the players who have been with us all season long."
"Over the past seven months, we've had fun developing the Season 1 story and seeing the fans' reactions," Connors added.

April 13th, 2007, 20:48 Posted By: wraggster
It's speculated that this August will see a major announcement from Blizzard on a new game, after the developer announced that its Blizzcon 2007 event will be happening in California on the 3rd and 4th of the month.
You'll recall that Blizzard used Blizzcon 2005 as the stage to rip the curtain back on World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade.
In August 2006, the developer said it planned to make a major product announcement this year. At the time, many thought Blizzard was talking about StarCraft 2, rumours on which hit the headlines yesterday.
But let's not forget Diablo either, a third instalment in the RPG series the subject of much rumour too and, like StarCraft 2, destined to see the light of day. It's been wondered whether Blizzard will take either of these IPs into the MMORPG genre and follow in the footsteps of Warcraft - it seems unlikely, but who knows?
And then it could be taking any of its IPs into uncharted genre waters for those properties, as it did with StarCraft with the ill-fated StarCraft: Ghost. Hell, maybe it's going to re-reveal StarCraft: Ghost in a fresh light.
Blizzard's parent company Vivendi is holding a press event in the US currently, where we know for a fact some big announcements were set to happen but for one reason or another were pulled. And big announcements don't come much, ah, bigger, than the unveil of a brand new Blizzard project.
Has Vivendi held off so Blizzard can rock Blizzcon 2007 and its fans with major news? We await the event with bated breath.

We clearly recall the first time we clapped eyes on Doom 3 in motion at E3 2002: its visuals were like nothing we'd seen before, causing jaws to clunk to the floor. id Software is promising to do the same with its mystery game based on a brand new IP that's currently in development.
"I'm confident that John [Carmack] is going to be able to deliver that 'Wow' factor in terms of a huge visual and technological difference", id's Todd Hollenshead said of the developer's top-secret project in an interview with Next-Gen.biz.
Carmack's approach, Hollenshead explained, is allowing id "to do some things visually that we haven't ever been able to do before."
"He is really unfettering the ability of artists to go absolutely nuts. We are not going to be constantly strapping artists down under budgets and memory restrictions. The technology allows artists to fully express the fidelity of their imaginations".
"I believe this game will look better than anything we have previously seen", Hollenshead added.
id Software has said previously it hopes to unveil its top-secret project some time this year. In January, John Carmack revealed that the game is "diverting a little bit from the standard id formula and it's not just a first-person shooter" and that the gameplay "is somewhat different from anything that we've done before".

Monsters here, monsters there, monster every bleedin' where. You'll be bashing, fireballing - and running away like a screaming girl from - the nastier denizens of Middle-earth a lot in Turbine's MMORPG The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of Angmar and today's new video developer diary dips into the enemies and other beasties that await.
Information in the diary is provided by executive producer Jeffrey Steefel, who says that "One of the great things about the Middle-earth that Tolkien created is the rich, rich landscape full of interesting and exciting monsters." He talks about the depth the author gave the creatures of his fantasy world and how these creatures have been used for the game, the details backed up by gameplay footage.

April 12th, 2007, 22:19 Posted By: wraggster
Rumours are circulating that Blizzard will be launching a beta for StarCraft 2 at the end of the year, with supposed game details additionally hitting the internet.
It's all stemmed from an article on a Korean website called Fighter Forum.com, which has been translated by TeamLiquid.net.
According to the translation, a source involved in some capacity with the original StarCraft spoke of hearing of StarCraft 2 and that "as far as I know there will be a new race and couple additional units for each race".
It's additionally suggested that the new race will be based on Kerrigan, with a total of four races appearing in the sequel.
Blizzard's parent company Vivendi remained unavailable for comment on these rumours at the time of writing.
Just so you know, we're taking the details with a very large pinch of salt.

The Shivering Isles bug that has rendered Oblivion unplayable in many ways has been fixed by Bethesda in a beta patch for the PC version of the RPG expansion.
The bug, which occurred as soon as Shivering Isles was installed, was linked to object IDs and caused newly created objects in the game world to disappear.
The patch can be downloaded from the official Elder Scrolls website.
Despite reports that the same bug is present in the Xbox 360 version of Shivering Isles, Bethesda said yesterday it's not been able to replicate it but is investigating.

Atari has revealed a new expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2 that will be available this autumn.
Mask of the Betrayer will follow on from the climatic battle against the King of Shadows in the original campaign, and see you wake up deep below the earth's surface surrounded by swarms of evil spirits. It's here in harsh Rashemen that you'll seek out your true destiny.

Perhaps the most exciting new feature are epic levels, which will take you above and beyond level 20, giving you access to powerful new feats and spells.
In addition to this there will be new races, companions, base and prestige classes, as well as the usual slog of new weapons, monsters, armour, crafting options and modding tools.
"Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer's engrossing campaign will conclude the storyline that began in the original Neverwinter Nights 2, and focus on combat, exploration and classic D&D dungeon-crawling," said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of developer Obsidian Entertainment.
"We're also making new advances in story and character development as well as improving upon the acclaimed companion Influence System used in both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords and Neverwinter Nights 2."
Uncover our Mask of the Betrayer gallery for a look at the latest screenshots.
Neverwinter Nights 2 was released late last year to critical acclaim. Quest your way over to our review to find out more.

April 11th, 2007, 19:47 Posted By: wraggster
Yesterday, PC Gamer got all patriotic and looked at the British Isles campaign from forthcoming Medieval II: Total war expansion Kingdoms. Today, it's taking a trip across the ocean to the Americas, one of the later campaigns in the expansion and based on the movement of the Spanish and other European nations into the body of the American continents.
Players get to be the Spaniards who arrived in the Americas and began conquering and Empire building like it was going out of fashion. You'll have to impress the imperialists back home with your conquests if you want the full range of toys, and the greater your achievements in both military and diplomatic arenas the better off you will be. Achieve the missions set for you and win some key battles and the better resources will be gifted with by the Spanish nobility.
Of course you can also play as the native races, including Apaches, Mayans and Tlaxcalans, as they resist the invasion of disease-toting Euros. Each of the native nations has quite different unit types and their own peculiar approaches to combat. Clearly they'll struggle to take on the well-armed Europeans, so it's down to your tactical insight to find the best ways to use these lightly armed skirmish units against the Conquistadors, as well as rival native cultures.
You can also expect to see a bunch of new hero characters for factions across the world. Including William Wallace, Llywelyn The Last and, presumably, popular south American Aztec king, Moctezuma II. Hero characters will act as a kind of 'super general', bringing big stats and special units to your force. Keeping these guys alive and using them to win your most desperate battles will be crucial to a successful Kingdoms campaign.

Frogster Interactive has released a trailer for its Speedball 2 revamp project, which is due to release for PC later this year.
Frustratingly, the company's not currently showing gameplay; what we get to see is the likes of arena designs and character models that are being created for the game. You can see it all in our video player on the right.
Brutal sports game Speedball 2 first appeared in the 1990s courtesy of The Bitmap Brothers, and Frogster recently revealed that Mike Montgomery, The Bitmap Brothers founder, is to supervise all steps of development of the game's revival.

New details on The Creative Assembly's Medieval II: Total War expansion Kingdoms will be dancing before your eyeballs in the latest issue of PC Gamer (on-sale Thursday 12).
Whereas the sheer scale of The Creative Assembly's Medieval II meant campaigns demanded months of your time and much of the end-game is sheer grind to clinch those final few provinces, Kingdoms' four new mini-campaigns narrow focus down to specific regions and periods of history across the Medieval world.
The four campaigns have a tighter focus than the grand campaign, with certain regions broken up into more detailed areas. One of these campaigns will be revealed every day this week.
Today, PC Gamer is peering into the British Isles campaign. English, Welsh, Scottish and Viking/Norwegian factions will be trading blows in an attempt to gain control of the regions of Avalon, and each will have their own bonuses and advantages to occupying generals.
The Welsh, for example, will gain extra troops in troublesome border regions, while the English get a bunch of free veteran knights to reflect the traditionally strong Feudal armies of central Britain.
Kingdoms looks set to make the already splendid Medieval II even more flexible to your war-making whims. We're genuinely excited about being able to conduct small, more intense campaigns - this is going to be a game that demands even more from your tactical cleverness, and make you use units in ways that had previously eluded you.

April 11th, 2007, 00:50 Posted By: wraggster
A PC fix for what's being described as a "very serious bug" discovered in recently released Oblivion expansion Shivering Isles has been made available.
The bug, which happens once Shivering Isles is installed, is reportedly linked to a problem with identification numbers, or Form IDs, for in-game objects. An 'internal space' reserved for these numbers is being overpopulated due to certain NPC scripts "erroneously using up several identification numbers per frame of gameplay", says the Shivering Isles Wiki, which is causing objects freshly created to disappear from the game world.
According to the Wiki, the bug "will render the game unplayable in many ways about 50 to 120 hours of play".
Luckily an unofficial fix for the PC version of the expansion which addresses the bug can be downloaded, however Xbox 360 gamers are reporting that the bug is also present in the console version of Shivering Isles - and eyes are turning to Bethesda for help.
"Regarding the issue in which Form IDs are being used at a high rate in the Shivering Isles content; we are aware of the issue and we are currently looking into a solution," the developer has so far said in response.
"We appreciate your patience, especially from those of you affected by this issue, as we carefully work out a fix that will correct this problem without adding any new issues."

Relic's acclaimed Company of Heroes RTS is to wage war on new WWII fronts in Opposing Fronts, which is due to release in the autumn.
Opposing Fronts is more expansion than full sequel - although it's a standalone title - and features two new single-player campaigns, one focussing on the British 2nd Army during liberation of Caen in France and the second the German Panzer Elite during Operation Market-Garden.
In addition, Opposing Fronts will introduce an enhanced game engine supporting DirectX 10, new multiplayer modes, "mission persistence, improved vehicle and soldier AI, enhanced physics, and a dynamic weather system", THQ has informed.
Plus, the publisher's said the standalone title is fully compatible with Company of Heroes "allowing players to wage war with four unique armies" - we're assuming this is for multiplayer only.
"In Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts players will experience fast-paced dynamic tactics like never before, in two of the most brutal World War II campaigns ever fought," Tarrnie Williams, general manager, Relic Entertainment, tells us.
"With two intensely cinematic campaigns, significant upgrades to the Essence Engine, mission persistence, improved vehicle AI and weather effects that directly impact the battlefield, we're delivering yet again on our commitment to leading the way in strategic gaming with the best, most innovative titles available."

April 10th, 2007, 11:22 Posted By: wraggster
Epic Games' Tim Sweeney has revealed the studio is sceptical about Microsoft's Games for Windows - Live due to the restrictions it places on developers - and PC gamers.
Speaking in a 1UP.com podcast, Sweeney opined that the key problem with Games for Windows - Live currently "is that any feature that Microsoft implements and charges for, the developer can't implement themselves".
"As a PC developer, we're used to having complete freedom and defining our feature set - what we can give gamers and what they can do in our game. That's a big change, quite a huge change, for PC developers to now have features that we simply can't do", Sweeney said.
However, he wasn't writing the service off completely and obviously sees potential there, adding that Epic would "wholeheartedly jump onto Games for Windows [Live] if it evolved into the sort of system that's compatible with gamers' expectations on the PC platform".
But Sweeney still sees an issue with the Gold paid-for part of the service, even though Microsoft is offering a considerable portion of Games for Windows - Live's feature set for free in the Silver level.
"Taking all of these things that everybody has come to expect for free and now yanking them back and trying to sell them isn't going to fly with the Windows platform-not with Epic and not with the big publishers," he said.
Cross-platform gaming between Xbox 360 and PC is of course a major part of the Gold level of Games for Windows - Live, and it will be interesting to see how readily such is embraced by publishers.
Microsoft's Rich Wickham, director for Games for Windows, recently told us that the company is "working really closely with third parties, to make sure there's third-party content out on the service as well" in relation to cross-platform support, but to date first-party titles Shadowrun and UNO remain the only games confirmed that support cross-platform play.
