Nexon America has announced that it has released an update to its Celtic-inspired MMORPG, Mabinogi. The content update adds new item sets, improvements to magic wands, cooking contests and giant dice.
The update, which is now live and available for players in North America, features the Emain Macha Cooking Contest where players can pit their cooking skills against each other. The cooking contest is a month long event with qualifying rounds held from the first Saturday of the month to the second-to-last Saturday of each month. The last Saturday of the month is where finalists square off in the final rounds. Winners are picked by several judges who have different tastes, giving different perspectives on how well the meal is prepared. Winners of the cooking contests may receive a unique title as well as a new chef's uniform.
Also added to Mabinogi is the ability for wizards to chain cast with improvements to wands with a spirit. Once a wand spirit has reached a certain social level, extra charges will be added to the charge pool. For example, a Spirit Ice Wand with a social level of six will produce one extra charge on the ice bolt. This allows magic practitioners to quickly accumulate charges of magic while in battle. The higher social level of a players spirit wand, the more charges players will get on a single cast.
A new feature now included in Mabinogi with the content update are giant dice. The giant dice are now available in general shops in the land of Erinn, and can be use to settle item disputes, for players to build their own life-sized board games or simply for having fun plopping down the giant cubes.
Also added in this update is a new sets of items that, combined with the pieces of a player's favorite armor, will result in a passive bonus being added their character. For example, equipping a full Dustin Armor set will provide added resistance to explosive effects. A Bone Marlin set will provide you with extra resistance against petrification.

Activision may be considering a subscription-based multiplayer option for the Call of Duty series.
The service would be "in addition" to features the series offers today, according to a mysterious survey drudged up by Destructoid. In other words: you wouldn't lose, only gain.
The paid-for service "may" offer early access to content like map packs and betas; increase character customisation options; add enhanced statistic-tracking and community features; include exclusive in-game modes and challenges; and open a suite of team-management services for competitive play.
Examples given are persistent attributes that carry over from game to game, War Rooms to meet and plan in and exclusive tournaments and leagues.
These will be paid for monthly, quarterly or yearly, or included with Special Edition versions of the game at retail. The survey asks, "How likely are you to purchase or subscribe to this online service when the next Call of Duty game comes out?"
Activision told Eurogamer it does not comment on rumour and speculation.
But it's not the first time Activision has mulled over the idea of a more ambitious online approach for Call of Duty - a series that has an already popular and robust multiplayer segment.
"When you think about other properties that we own and control like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetise that, the same rules apply," said Kotick in March 2008, leaking learning from talks with Blizzard while the pair discussed mergers.
Modern Warfare 2, the sixth Call of Duty game, is developed by Infinity Ward and due out 10th November for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. We stuffed the gamepages below with tons of E3 content. Go check. Now, soldier!

After seeing precisely bugger all of the game at E3, Blizzard's released a batch of new Diablo III screenshots for us to gawk at... and dream dreams.
There's still no release date for the long-awaited three-quel, though with StarCraft II supposedly arriving first - and that only going into beta this summer (maybe) - a 2010 release for Diablo is looking more than likely.

Valve recently announced on the Team Fortress 2 blog that they are releasing the source files to 10 of the game's maps, making it much easier for fans to customize them. They also said they'd be releasing more source files for maps and models in the future.
"Here's the list of maps that are included in the update: Lumberyard, Ravine, Badlands, Dustbowl, Granary, Gravelpit, 2Fort, Badwater, Goldrush, and Hydro. For the beginner map makers out there, we hope this gives you an easier entry point by allowing you to alter or edit an existing map, as opposed to being forced to start from scratch. ... We also hope that it'll reduce the amount of confusion around the game logic and entity setup required for the various TF game modes."

June 16th, 2009, 21:57 Posted By: wraggster
When Max Payne again reappears on consoles this winter, it appears as though he'll be stepping into a much different setting. According to a cover story in issue 195 of Game Informer, the new title will not be taking place in the dark streets, warehouses, and construction yards of New York, but in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Max was booted from the New York Police Department and spent the following 12 years battling his inner demons and addictions, and at some point he moved out to the Brazilian metropolis to escape from his previous life. It appears once again he'll be drawn into elements undesirable, as his work as a security agent for a rich local family leads him into life-threatening situations.
In addition to the different setting, Max has undergone quite a few physical changes. He's burlier this time around, sports a beard and a shaved head, and appears to have ditched the long coat and black getup from the previous games in favor of a stained white sleeveless shirt and cargo pants. Screens included in the article also show a much brighter setting, making it appear like many of the venues for action in the third game take place while the sun is out. Rockstar did mention a few levels could take place at night or in the rain, and pointed out that achieving a 'noir' kind of feel is more about style than about a specific location or color.
Rockstar won't be using voice actor James McCaffrey again, saying it wouldn't really fit considering how much Max has aged. The talent being used won't be a big recognizable name, but Rockstar is confident it'll be appropriate, and the studio plans on giving Max plenty of lines of internal dialogue in the style of the previous games. Many details of the new plot aren't yet being talked about, but Rockstar told Game Informer players can expect it to include the elements of betrayal and violence the series is known for.
To build the new setting, Rockstar sent crews down to Sao Paulo to take note of environmental layouts and soak in the local flavor. The company believes it'll be able to put together some interesting locations for shootouts, with enemies being able to pop out of all sorts of unexpected spots as Max moves through the streets of shanty towns. This third game is being handled by Rockstar Vancouver instead of Remedy, the developer of the original games currently busy with Alan Wake.
One of the big questions Rockstar Vancouver is trying to answer with this game is how to evolve the third-person shooting mechanics of the franchise to make them feel new again. With the first two, the bullet time system that let Max slow down those around him while performing dives and dodges and blasting bullets was unique enough to stand out. The third game will still feature a bullet time system, but will also include a number of other features that have to do with animation and interaction with the environment to ensure the gameplay feels distinct.
The game is being built with Rockstar's RAGE, used to build past games like Grand Theft Auto IV, in combination with NaturalMotion's Euphoria technology that allows for enemies to react realistically to being hit by gunfire and as they impact things in the environment, which Rockstar is hoping delivers a greater sense of realism. To protect himself from incoming bullets, Max will also be able to take cover behind objects as well as grab enemies to use them as human shields, though taking advantage of the cover system isn't required for success. It seems quite a few bits of the environment will also be destructible, so perhaps not every bit of cover will be all that reliable.
Something called environmental bullet time is being built into the game, which according to the article can be compared to quick-time events in other titles. Yet instead of doing something like tapping a button within a small window of time, the player will have full control of Max as the event progresses. Rockstar provided one example to Game Informer, where Max slides down a tin roof in slow motion while tagging nearby enemies with bullets.
This won't be an open-world game, though it seems Max will have a limited ability to scale walls and access combat areas from a few different directions. A bullet-cam, which follows projectiles into their targets, will be implemented into the game to add more style, and it seems Max will be able to perform life-saving kill shots should he be near death. If he manages to kill his killer before the screen goes black, he'll spring back to life thanks to an adrenaline boost.
What Game Informer seemed most impressed by were the animations and attention to detail in the environments, which were said to enhance the gunplay and feel of the game. While hardly anything was said about the multiplayer, it was confirmed that there will be an online component in the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC version of the game.

June 16th, 2009, 21:53 Posted By: wraggster
Artix Entertainment, with over 80 million gamer accounts for their four game titles, today announced WarpForce, its fifth RPG, scheduled to launch July 15, 2009.
"WarpForce is all about taking the Player on Star Trek and Star Wars-style adventures from the point of view of characters that come from a traditional swords-and-sorcery fantasy world," said Tony Deller, Project Lead, WarpForce. "It's all about going on a journey through the stars on a search for every bit of humor and action in the universe."
WarpForce begins on the world of Lore, familiar to the Artix audience as a world inhabited by wizards, warriors, dragons, and all types of fantastic creatures.
WarpForce is about the people of Lore (Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and a reptilian race called Drakel) who band together to create a fleet of starships powered by both magic and science, and zoom into outer space on missions to defeat a powerful and vast alien network that is working to take over the universe. The game takes ideas of traditional fantasy and rockets them into a Sci-Fi universe, combining classic RPG elements with the hallmark Artix Entertainment humor.
WarpForce is a massive single-player storyline that unlocks as the player levels up (much like a console game), becoming more powerful by increasing stats and getting advanced equipment. Players will be able to choose from several races (each with benefits), dynamically change equipment during colorful and exciting animated battles, and also be able to combine their efforts in large wars and crossover events.
Beta is scheduled to begin July 3, 2009, and will be free to players of Artix's AdventureQuest game (www.battleon.com) who have upgraded to Guardian status. The full public launch of WarpForce is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2009.
Players can visit www.warforce.com to get more game details.
Gamers are encouraged to follow WarpForce's development progress, and see concept art and screen shots, at http://forums2.battleon.com/f/tt.asp?forumid=261.

Those cries of 'game over, man, game over' might have come a little soon, as it seems that work is still underway on Obsidian's Alien RPG.
Forming part of a trilogy of games based on the classic movie franchise planned by SEGA, reports last February suggested that the game was now on indefinite hold, a fate that also seemed to have beset Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines and that left Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator as the only game likely to see the light of day.
Comments from SEGA at E3 suggest that there's hope left for the waylaid Aliens games, with Joystiq being told 'Aliens vs. Predator will be the first to ship out of our triplet of Aliens titles; hence it was shown at this year's E3. We'll have more news to share about the other two games in the near future so stay tuned.'
Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator is tied down for a release early next year. 'It's good to know that no matter how bad the AvP films were, we gamers will have this amazing new game that f***ng blows the director's souls out their asses,' was IGN reader x9x9x94's response to the game, and we agree it's looking a smite more impressive than its cinematic namesakes..

June 16th, 2009, 21:48 Posted By: wraggster
Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced details on the exclusive driver profile system in Need for Speed™ SHIFT. Driver profile is the ultimate extension of the true driver's experience. Extending through the single player career and online multiplayer modes, driver profile gives each player a unique game experience based on the way each player drives on the track. This exclusive driver profile system pushes the entire racing genre forward.
During this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, EA invited attendees to participate in a Need for Speed SHIFT Hero Car Competition that showcased the driver profile. Competitors raced around the Autopolis track in the BMW M3 GT2 hero car generating the highest number of driver profile points. The winner of the Need for Speed SHIFT Hero Car Competition, Mitchell Francis, from Los Angeles won a brand new 2009 BMW M3 Coupe.
Driver profile is a tailor-made career mode based on four key game play components:
1. Personality - a player's driving style determines whether they are an aggressive or precise driver.
2. Success - as in every race, the ultimate goal is to finish at the top of the podium.
3. Profile points - every car passed, every corner mastered, every opponent taken out generates profile points.
4. Badges - these unique icons bring individuality and style to each player's driver profile, as each player races and completes top achievements.
As a player's driver profile develops through the course of the game, it creates rivalries, triggers specific challenges and even unlocks vehicles and customization options. Need for Speed SHIFT's multiple reward systems keeps players in each race regardless of their position.
"The new driver profile feature in Need for Speed SHIFT gives players full control of how they progress through game," said Patrick Soderlund, Senior Vice President of EA Games Europe. "In SHIFT, how you drive is who you are behind the wheel."
Need for Speed SHIFT is being developed by Slightly Mad Studios in collaboration with Black Box and Patrick Soderlund. Slightly Mad Studios includes developers and designers that worked on the critically acclaimed games GT Legends and GTR 2. The PSP (PlayStation Portable) version is being developed by EA's Bright Light studio.
Need for Speed SHIFT is scheduled to ship in Europe on September 17 and in North America on September 22 on the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PC and PSP system. More information can be found at www.needforspeed.com or follow us on Twitter at NeedforSpeed. Press can download assets at http://info.ea.com.

Need some reassurance that Metal Gear Solid: Rising will be taken seriously by Kojima Productions?
Speaking on the Kojima Productions podcast last week, host Sean Eyestone confirmed the studio would not be reusing the same game engine from Metal Gear Solid 4, but instead creating an entire new one for Rising.
"We're redoing the engine from scratch, and it's going to look amazing," Eyestone said.
"It's going to be a big project like Metal Gear Solid 4. The entire team is serious about making it look as good as possible on every platform."
As if there was any doubt from us gamers. Metal Gear has always strived for graphical greatness. It will be interesting to see how the studio handles this major multiplatform release, though.

Looking for a new field to conquer in World of Warcraft? Tired of dominating Warsong Gulch or Alterac Valley? Blizzard is hard at work coming up with a brand new challenge for players looking to fight for the Horde and the Alliance once more. On the WoW Community Site, a recent update was posted listing the Isle of Conquest, a brand new PvP arena that will be included in the upcoming Call of the Crusade content patch that will take over a new area just off the shores of Northrend and promises to deliver battles of up to 80 players per match.
The premise behind the Isle of Conquest is pretty simple: an Alliance and Horde General have been fighting each other for control of the island and its vast resources. The side that manages to eliminate the enemy general first wins. There are a number of key locations that you'll be able to capture to gain specific advantages for your side. The oil derrick and cobalt mine provides reinforcements as well as honor to the side that holds it, while the docks provides two new siege weapons called the Glaive Thrower and the Catapult. The airship hangar allows players to bomb enemies from above or parachute teams into enemy keeps, while the siege workshop gives you large numbers of siege vehicles to destroy enemy walls. Connected to all of these locations are graveyards.
Similar to Alterac Valley, Isle of Conquest uses a reinforcement system. Killing an enemy player reduces reinforcements, and if you manage to reduce your enemy to a specific limit, the match is over. Similarly, if the general for your side happens to be killed as the walls of his keep are destroyed, the match will end as well.

Dragonfly Games and Triple Games are teaming up to make King of Fighters Online for PCs. Unlike main entries in the series, this game is a beat ‘em up with on the fly character switching.
Looks gorgeous right? The Matrix-like ending grabbed my attention too so I looked up Dragonfly Games. Their past works include Karma, Special Force, Gold Slam, and Karma II. Three of the four games are first person shooters. Gold Slam is an tennis game.
King of Fighters Online is quite a deviation. I’m still searching for more information about Triple Games/Triple A Games and hope to find something about them before King of Fighters Online goes online early next year.

We're not exactly supportive of the Chinese government requiring new PCs to be imported with content-filtering software, but like we keep saying, karma's a bitch: CyberSitter developer Solid Oak says it's found stolen code inside the Green Dam Youth Escort filtering software mandated by Chinese authorities, and it's considering filing a lawsuit to halt shipments. In the meantime, the company has asked heavy hitters like Dell and HP to refrain from installing Green Dam; Dell says it's still reviewing the Chinese requirements and hasn't yet shipped any machines with the software, but some nine million copies of the software have already gone out. For its part, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has "ordered the problem be fixed," but it's unclear when that'll happen -- and it still doesn't change the delicious multilayered irony of Chinese censorship efforts being thwarted by a copyright infringement action.

MD Mark Reed foresees computers outgrowing rival formats over coming years
Realtime Distribution has predicted that PC gaming will overtake consoles as the dominant format, adding the company is best placed to benefit from that shift.
Speaking to PCR, the managing director of the distributor, Mark Reed made the comments during an interview about the company's 20th anniversary.
"Gaming is still growing and in our opinion PC gaming will outgrow consoles over the years until consoles essentially become almost like PCs.
"There are not many companies better positioned than Realtime to take advantage of this," he added.
