EA has confirmed that Swedish game developer DICE is working on a third full instalment of the acclaimed Battlefield series.
"I've had the luxury of looking at Battlefield 3 over at DICE in Sweden and was highly impressed by the way the team is working on that product,” said EA COO John Pleasants at a press conference attended by G4.
Speaking at the William Blair Growth Stock Conference in Chicago, Illinois, Pleasants added that the game will not be released in the fiscal year, but assured that development was going well.
Since 2002 the Mirror’s Edge developer has developed multiple Battlefield games, starting in 2002 with Battlefield 1942, and progressing through several expansions and spin-offs until the 2005 release of Battlefield 2. Since then the studio has worked on more expansions and spin-offs, including the 2008 release Bad Company, but had made no mention of a third proper instalment.
EA completed a full-scale acquisition of DICE from 2005-06 for $175.5 million.

The NEC USB 3.0 controller is due to hit the streets this month, and already Sarah Sharp (the, um, "Geekess") has been able to crank out a Linux driver for the device. Sharp states that she is "working with Keve Gabbert (the OSV person in my group at Intel) to make sure that Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Red Hat" pick up the driver, meaning that Linux users will likely be the first to have their Super Speed dreams become a reality. Are you a hardware manufacturer with some hot USB 3.0 controller prototype that wants to out this guy through its paces?

San Jose-based online game publisher, Gamescampus.com,
announced today that it has launched the new Faction Warfare Player Vs. Player (PvP) combat system in its popular MMORPG, Asda Story.
As part of the new system, players may select from one of the following Factions which will serve as their character's PvP allegiance against other players' Factions in the weeks to come: Light, Darkness, and Chaos. After players have selected which Faction they would like to fight for, they may apply for scheduled Faction War Battlefield matches that pit the three opposing Factions against one another in a fight to capture Fortresses around a special Battlefield Map, with additional warfare maps to follow soon. Up to 30 players from each Faction may join in the fight, with up to 90 players mixing it up in intense combat at one time.
As each Battlefield fills, new ones will open to accommodate every player that wishes to participate in the fighting. Faction teams are balanced for each Battlefield based on level and number of players participating to ensure even, heart pounding fights every time. Split into Attack Units with Attack Captains leading their troops into the field, players are able to gain Warfare Points both by defeating players of the other Factions in direct combat, or capturing Fortresses owned by the other Factions located around the map.
The more players fight and compete in the Faction Wars, the more Experience, Honor Points, and Honor Coins they will receive towards special Faction Warfare items and gear that is not available anywhere else in the game. In addition, they will gain PvP Rankings to unlock access to even better and more powerful items.
Based on a colorful, bright and cheerful world, Asda Story is a free to play exciting fantasy-style anime 3D MMORPG game that features a unique 'Soul Mate System.' The unique party system offers two players the ability to align to become 'soul mates' in-game and grants them access to unique perks and the ability to activate special powers together with their Soul Mate. Another key feature of the game is the 'Real Costume System,' which gives players some of the most extensive personalization and design options ever seen in an MMORPG.

Oddlabs, the creator of the family friendly real-time strategy game Tribal Trouble, announces the release of its browser based successor: Tribal Trouble 2. Travel back in time once again and set sail on new quests to familiar as well as foreign places all while building your own career as chieftain of your tribe.
Tribal Trouble 2 is a cartoon style 3D real-time strategy game set in the wacky Viking age where pillaging and plundering were everyone's favorite pastimes. The game starts off somewhere high up in the Cold North, where you are chieftain of your very own tribe. Your hometown consists of little more than a couple of sheds, a carpenter and a small row boat. From here it's up to you to turn it into a bustling city and make your name feared in all of the realms - all the way down to the African tribes in the Deep South. Success won't come by itself though: you need points to purchase new buildings and enhance the abilities of your Viking raiders, and points are won only on the battlefield!
Before you choose to test your strength and skill against real enemies, be it computer controlled or other online players, you might want to get a feel for the game. Hop into your row boat and meet up with Grudgebeard Goatcheese, who will guide you through a number of tutorials teaching you how to play the game's real-time strategy part.
Each tutorial scenario, single player quest or online multiplayer battle takes place on an island where you must make use of whatever assets you have at your disposal to gather resources, construct buildings, produce weapons, deploy armies and, ultimately, teach your adversaries who's in control!
You start out with a handful of peasants, the most basic unit. These little fellows can chop down trees, mine rocks, construct buildings and catch the brightly colored chickens that can give weapons magical enhancements. Once you have built some quarters, an armory and a few watchtowers to defend yourself, it's time to start producing an army. In the armory your peasants can turn your collected timber, rock, iron ore and chickens into weapons which they can wield to become fearsome warriors. Things can be spiced up a notch further by training a Lur Blaster in your quarters - his sheer lack of musical abilities allows this guy to stun or kill enemies and wreck buildings.
While you were busy setting up a base camp and churning out warriors, your opponents probably did the same. That inevitably leads to clashes between the hordes of tribesmen swarming across the island, and this is where your tactical sense comes into play. By utilizing the varied terrain, you may be able to lure your clueless enemies into narrow passages or position yourself so you can attack them from higher ground or have your towers lend a little support.
Whenever you complete a quest or win an online battle, you are awarded points to spend in your hometown. You can invest them in new buildings to get more functionality, open up new parts of the game, boost your strength on the battlefield in various ways - or how about a complete makeover for your cheiftain to instill fear (or giggles perhaps) among your enemies?
Once you have built a hall in your hometown, you are no longer limited to single player quests, but can meet other players and arrange multiplayer games on a number of islands specially designed to give you all a fair start. Face off against a single opponent, team up against another gang or try the "king of the hill" type Treasure Game; more maps are being added each month!
Tribal Trouble 2 is very easy to get started with: Simply click "Try it now!" on http://tribaltrouble2.com and you are up and running - you can always create a new account later to save your achievements. Managing your hometown, adjusting the looks of your chieftain and choosing what quests to embark on are done in your browser. However, once the fighting begins, the 3D real-time strategy game is launched in its own window or full-screen mode if you prefer. No installation of the game is necessary; you simply log in and play using one of the popular browsers in Windows, Mac OS X or Linux.
Features:
- Easy to grasp 3D real-time strategy game launched directly from your browser - no installation required
- 11 story driven single player quests and 8 multiplayer maps so far - more are added each month
- Build up your hometown with a selection of 12 types of buildings that will add new features or boost your strength in combat
- Design your own chieftain or chieftess profile by picking the body type, facial expression, beard (males only!), clothing and helmets from a wide selection
- The RTS part of the game features 4 types of resources, 3 types of buildings and 5 types of units
- 2-6 players can compete in multiplayer games with mile-wide islands and thousands of units frantically trying to wipe each other out
- Quests to the far away tropics where you battle the African natives also known from Tribal Trouble
Pricing and Availability
Tribal Trouble 2 runs directly from all of the major browsers (Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 3+, Safari 3+) with the Sun Java plugin installed. Visit http://tribaltrouble2.com and click "Try it now!" to try the game right away.
The game itself is free to play, but some features cost an amount of virtual currency that can either be bought or earned within the game itself.

Run out the guns and prepare for instant action as Shrapnel Games and developer SprueGames now bring Salvo!, the fighting sail wargame, direct to your hard drive! Previously only available for purchase as a physical product Salvo! can now also be had as a download, making it easy to fulfill your need for wanton violence against canvas and wood any hour of the day, any day of the week.
Salvo! is a turn based naval wargame of combat set in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries before naval warfare changed to an era of dreadnoughts and torpedoes. Players command a variety of fighting ships (with the ability to edit your own) from the major seafaring powers of the day, whether recognized government or scurvy pirates, and battle on the high seas for victory in campaigns or generated battles. Both single and multi-player is supported, with multi-player taking the form of both the forgotten art of the hotseat play and play-by-email (PBEM). Salvo's PBEM experience is a wonderfully smooth sailing experience, as turns are automatically saved and ready to be whisked over the Intertubes.
Whether your naval skills rival that of Lord Nelson or you're more of a Captain Crunch Salvo! makes commanding your forces an intuitive and easily grasped experience. From single ships to entire squadrons, the UI makes everyone a force to be reckoned with. Of course, while easy to control that does not mean Salvo! sacrifices realism for playability. For example, take the sailing model as described by noted naval gamer reviewer Jim Cobb in his review of Salvo! for Subsim.com:
"The sailing model is perfect. Arrows show the direction and distance a selected ship can move. Thus, a vessel heading into the when can only go one arrow. Not going the full distance has ramification of not moving faster for another turn. If left alone, a ship "in irons" will eventually "fall off" into the wind. Since this process takes time, a "tacking" arrow is provided. Tacking allows some movement into the wind but requires some skill. A low-rated captain and crew may fumble a tack. Players do not have to manage each ship as automove will move unselected ships in the last direction. The efficacy of such moves depends on the quality of the ship and her captain as well as the crew's morale."
Besides a realistic sailing model Salvo! includes everything you'd want to see in a fighting sail wargame such as:
*Land (and shore batteries), shallow water, and variable winds.
*Multiple means of death and destruction: ball, double ball, chain/link, grapeshot/canister and ball/canister.
*Crew management.
*Boarding actions.
*Ships of the line, sloops, xebecs, frigates, gun platforms, and bombards.
Pat Miller of Applelinks in his review of Salvo! does an excellent job of describing all the details you'll find while playing:
"...for any given turn in Salvo! you'll have to take stock of how your ship (or ships) are doing, optimizing the crew allocation to your ideal balance between maintenance, movement, and offense, position your ship in the most advantageous position vis a vis range, wind direction, and firing angles, choose the ideal load-out of your cannons in accordance with your battle strategy (going for a quick kill vs. disabling the enemy ship, for example). It's not easy, but for the turn-based tacticians out there who love to obsess about this kind of stuff, Salvo! is definitely the game for you."
Salvo! is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems, with cross-compatibility between platforms in PBEM play. It sells direct from Shrapnel Games for only $39.95 and is available right now as a download or a physical product shipped to your door.

For some of us, playing StarCraft competitively is a beautiful ballet of dying over and over again, so it's good that Blizzard is working hard on making death interesting in StarCraft II.
The latest update to the Developer's Corner section of the official StarCraft II web page showcases this video, kicking off with a Protoss carrier dying before getting to the real meat - Zerg dying in droves. Whether they die by fire or simply explode in a shower of guts and pointy bits, there's nothing quite as satisfying as a horde of Zerg reduced to its component parts, unless of course those Zerg are you.
Oh hell, admit it. It's fun to watch them die even if it is you.

Electronic Arts has announced that The Sims 3, the newest major entry in its popular simulation franchise, has sold 1.4 million units in its first week.
The sales figure combines both the Windows and Mac SKUs. According to EA, this is the best-selling PC launch in the publisher's history. EA also announced that it has recorded over 7 million downloads of player created content in the same week.
"With more than a dozen press awards, strong reviewer scores and positive feedback from The Sims community, we are thrilled with the success of The Sims 3 launch and the early sales indicate that we have another hit on our hands," said EA Play Label head Rod Humble.
"The volume of items created with The Sims 3 and downloaded online is a testament to how passionate The Sims players are. It’s their world now, we can’t wait to see everything players create and share."
According to EA, the iPhone and iPod Touch version of The Sims 3 have seen similar success, reaching the number one spot in the Top Paid App list in the US within 18 hours.
"The game's sales success along with its strong critical acclaim demonstrates that The Sims 3 mobile experience is a worldwide hit with our customers," said EA Mobile VP of worldwide publishing Adam Sussman.
Though previous entries in the series continue to dominate PC sales charts, there was some concern for The Sims 3 when it appeared on piracy channels two weeks prior to release. However, these early sales figures would indicate that the game is off to a solid start.

While Turbine intends to turn MMORPG Dungeons & Dragons Online into a free-to-play title in the US, there are no current plans to do the same in Europe, according to regional publisher Codemasters.
A digital upgrade for the game titled Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited will go live this summer in North America, allowing new users to play for free and purchase content via micro-transactions.
"To clarify, for the time being, DDO Europe will not be assuming this new business model and the European DDO game service will remain a monthly subscription-based game with all new content created available to all subscribers, as has been the model up until now," said Codemasters in a statement.
"As the beta progresses we will release more information regarding the future plans for EU players," added the publisher.

June 9th, 2009, 20:04 Posted By: wraggster
In an exclusive meeting at E3 last week, we spoke with Fernando and Kate Paiz, producers of Turbine's D&D Online, about their plans to significantly adjust the game's subscription model and allow players free access to the game. It's a bold step but one that Turbine feels is right for the property.
The game, set to launch this summer, will be renamed D&D Online: Eberron Unlimited (or simply DDO Unlimited). Available as a digital upgrade to existing subscribers, newcomers will be able to download and start playing the game for free. A new DDO store, instantly accessible anywhere within the game itself, will sell equipment, new adventures, added character content (including the brand new monk class), hirelings and a host of other things. All the new items are loaded within the client, so once a player purchases an item, it's immediately available.
Free players will not be restricted in their progress through the game and will have constant access to the game servers and be able to progress all the way up to the game's new level cap. The producers emphasized that players can still obtain their adventuring kit within the game itself. In fact, there are some high-level items that simply aren't for sale in the store and will instead have to be earned through play. As players adventure through the world of Eberron they will also earn points they can spend at the store, meaning that it's possible to reap the benefits of the store without ever having to get out their credit cards.
Players who wish to explore what the store has to offer can spend cash to get store credits. The producers' demo of the store showed how seamless the whole process is. Whenever a player is confronted with premium content, whether at the door of a locked dungeon or selecting a purchasable option during character selection, there's a handy link right to the store and with a minimum of clicks, players will have instant access to the new feature. Players are also free to browse through all the store listings at any time and any purchases items are immediately placed in their character's inventory.
Current players who wish to continue their paid subscriptions will now be known as VIPs. Their fees will give them automatic access to many of the additions that other users have to purchase a la carte. VIPs will also have priority server access and a shared bank slot that can be used to transfer items from one character to another on the same account. Additionally, VIPs will receive a monthly allotment of store credits that they can use to buy whatever additional items the desire. Though the store's pricing structure is still being balanced, VIPs are likely to get a bit more for their money than a player who chooses to buy all the additions individually.
DDO is taking the new approach because Turbine felt it's the right title to explore free-to-play MMOs and microtransactions. Not only does the concept of paying for additional content adhere to the pen-and-paper game's reliance on modules, sourcebooks, miniatures, and such, but it also helps players who don't have as much time to play a chance to stay competitive with their friends by purchasing XP boosts and improved adventuring gear.
The new system may also smooth over a few of the MMO's design issues. Since leaving a dungeon early to resupply results in an XP hit, players can now purchase new arrows and potions (and even resurrection tokens) inside the dungeons. Solo-minded players can more easily take on tougher challenges by purchasing a full party's worth of retainers.
Turbine hopes to launch D&D Online: Eberron Unlimited this summer. Players who would like early access to the game can sign up for the beta at the DDO website.

Details of the game were revealed at a recent press conference held in Tokyo's Akihabara on May 20th to which the press and around sixty fans who had won a contest were invited to be among the first to play the game.
Grandia Online is the latest in a series of best selling games dating as far back as the 1997 release of the original Grandia RPG for the Sega Saturn console. The game itself is set within the world presented in the Grandia series, in the "Age of Genesis", before the original Grandia story takes place.
The Grandia Online announcement comes hot on the heels of the recent upgrades to Hokuto no Ken Online Heroes ("Fist of the North Star" Online Heroes), which was also built on BigWorld Technology by GameArts Co., Ltd.
Yoshitada Iwata, Producer at GungHo Online Entertainment, commented that "The BigWorld Technology provides a robust, cost effective way for us to bring GameArts' online visions to life. Both the technology and the support we receive from the BigWorld team are second to none, and I cannot recommend the BigWorld platform more highly to teams considering creating any kind of massively multiplayer online game."
"We are very pleased that GameArts' experience with the BigWorld Technology Suite during the development of Hokuto-no-Ken led them to acquire a subsequent license for the development of Grandia Online. We look forward to continuing to support them on this title and on future projects, and to growing BigWorld's presence in Japan more widely", said James Hursthouse, BigWorld's Director of Business Development for Japan and Korea.
Grandia Online is expected to enter open beta in July 2009, with a full commercial release in Summer 2009.

Reality Gap, Inc. announced that its upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game, Monato Esprit, will launch its Final Beta today. Monato Esprit is a fantasy role-playing game in which players assume the role of winged Archons whose mission is to rid the Dreamworld of an invasion by nightmares. As a unique component of the game, players control the economy by having the exclusive right to sell items in the stores, commanding non-player characters (NPCs) to charge tolls, and performing alchemy to create custom magic items.
Slated for commercial launch next month, players can experience Monato Esprit for free by registering for the Final Beta at www.monatoesprit.com. Players who participate in this Final Beta will be able to keep their characters, as well as all of their items, when the game launches in July.
"We are excited to enter the final beta phase of Monato Esprit," said J. Mark Hood, chief operating officer of Reality Gap, Inc. "We've received thousands of suggestions from our fans and have incorporated these changes which uniquely combine the economy of a virtual world in the setting of a role-playing game."
