Bohemia Interactive and IDEA Games have today taken steps to unlock some of the mystery surrounding their forthcoming tactical military simulation, ArmA II by revealing the secrets behind the name of the game itself. Project leader Marek Spanel took the time to shed some light on the unusual title. A full version of Marek's musings can be seen at the studio's website.
The word 'Arma' is Latin in origin; a multifaceted word that depending on context can be used to mean defensive arms, shields, soldiers or weapons of war amongst others. The reasons for the team at Bohemia choosing such an ancient and unconventional word are two-fold; to have a name that is easily remembered and pronounced across different languages and to signify that just like the name itself, ArmA II's gameplay is boldly different and not afraid to deviate from tried and tested shooter formulae.
When creating a name for their flagship product, Marek and the rest of Bohemia Interactive were equally keen to avoid videogame name clichés of the past and walk their own line.
"[When naming the title] it felt like almost everyone preferred something along the lines of Battleshock Operation Force 3: Thunderstorm Troops over a simple and strong word, with a strong foundation behind it," commented Marek. "Choosing the right name had been a big deal for us, but ultimately we know the quality of this game will speak for itself."
Featuring the most realistic warfare ever, ArmA II promises to build on the excellent features that have made Bohemia Interactive a respected name among gamers. Players can expect in-depth team-based combat, a comprehensive playbook of military tactics and an enormous battlefield to push strategy to the limit.
ArmA II is coming to North America in 2009 and is exclusively for PC. For all the latest information please visit www.arma2.com

Arstechnica has a short article up describing how Microsoft and Intel have 'goofed up' Windows 7's XP Mode, by ensuring many PCs will not be able to use it. (And it won't be easy to figure out in advance if your PC is one of them.) Meanwhile, over at Infoworld, Redmond is criticized for having the 'right idea, wrong technology' with their latest compatibility scheme, and PC World says 'great idea, on paper.' With Windows 7 due to be released in 2010, and Redmond apparently eager to move on from XP, perhaps this is not really a 'goof' at all?

Nielsen Games has said Second Life is the second-most played game across the US, and the virtual world where people spend the most time.
The research company randomly sampled 180,000 homes across the country and found that, on average, 760 minutes are spent playing Second Life each week.
World of Warcraft only claims 653 minutes a week, but accounts for a massive 47 per cent of total minutes played. Second Life, at two, only represents three per cent of that figure.
No other MMOs feature, but Second Life beats the likes of Half-Life 2, StarCraft and Civilization IV.
Massively finds that, on average, people spend 47 minutes on YouTube each week, 84 minutes on Facebook and just 10 minutes on MySpace.
Second Life is a virtual world based on our own, where players and sell property and services to each other. The in-game currency can be legitimately purchased with real money, however, which has lead to some Second Life "companies" turning over real-business-like profits and gaining real-life value.

Nival Online’s star RPG set for an expensive overhaul to become a free-to-play MMO
Russian game group Nival Online has reinvented its star franchise as a free-to-play MMO in the nation’s most expensive development project ever.
Role-playing title Allods – called Rage of Mages in the west– is said to be the most successful ever game to be developed inside Russia. Now with a record budget of $12 million, Nival will re-develop the game as an MMORPG and release the title on Gala Networks’ gPotato gaming portal.
Allods Online will launch this autumn, adding to Nival’s portfolio of titles which includes the 2006 PC title Heroes of Might and Magic V.
In 2008 the developer picked up the awards for Best Online Game and Best Game Developer during the Russian Game Development Conference.
“We are excited to work with Nival Online who has proved their mastery of PC and online games for over a decade” said Hyun Hur, CEO of Gala Networks Europe.
“We are confident that Allods Online will have a major impact on the overall online games industry and demonstrates that top quality games can be free, giving players a strong alternative to subscription-based MMORPGs,” Hur added.

StarCraftWire reports that Blizzard has started taking beta sign-ups for StarCraft II. Quoting: 'Interested parties must simply visit their Battle.net profile page, choose to opt-in for the beta, and re-submit their current system specs by way of a small downloadable piece of software.' Blizzard's Chris Sigaty said in an interview, 'As with previous betas for our real-time strategy games, the StarCraft II beta test will be multiplayer only, and players will have access to all three races — terrans, protoss, and zerg — and all of their units. We'll include a selection of multiplayer maps, but they won't necessarily include all of the maps that will be in the final version of the game. We're making some great progress on the single-player campaign, but we don't plan to do a public beta since we want to keep the story under wraps until the game's out
