The dream game for twitch-heavy first-person shooter (FPS) players looking for the character development and community found in massively multi-player online (MMO) games is within reach. Huxley: The Dystopia kicked-off the second phase of its teaser Web site, marking the beginning of closed beta testing signups for ijji.com's first-of-its-kind Unreal Engine 3-based MMOFPS. Now eager players can enter their names for a chance to be among the first to try Huxley: The Dystopia.
The Huxley: The Dystopia site's new additions also boast a variety of previously unseen surprises and tidbits about the game. New items include videos, access to forums, screenshots, character descriptions, storyline background, and much more.
"Huxley: The Dystopia is ready to reveal what it has evolved into, and we want our community to be the first to see the great progress we've made gearing up for the game's launch," said Philip Yun, CEO, NHN USA, Inc. "As just talking about the game doesn't do it justice, we are excited to invite players in to see exactly how we brought together elements of FPS' fast action and MMO's character development, combining it all within a intricate storyline with stunning visuals."
Huxley: The Dystopia is a powerful combination of massively multi-player online (MMO) game character development elements and the twitch-based fast-action game play of an Unreal Engine 3-based first person shooter (FPS). Players are thrust into a dynamic world of crisp graphics and realistic environments, where they align themselves with one of two races, Sapiens or Alternatives, in the battle to harness dwindling resources in a war-torn land. Game play is endlessly peppered with attacks from and against the Hybrid, a mysterious third group born of the two races.
Huxley fans, game enthusiasts and anyone curious to find out more can check out the teaser Web site.

Jolt Online Gaming, whose games include Legends of Zork and Utopia Kingdoms, announced a new title to their catalog today. Playboy Manager, yes Playboy Manager, will allow players to log into the site and 'manage' the career of a playboy model. From the press release:
Acquire wealth, fame, and a bevy of beautiful models while you compete with thousands of other players -- all of them after exactly the same things. Strive to drive the finest cars, throw the biggest parties, and encounter the world's sexiest women – the luxurious Playboy lifestyle presented in an online game packed full of wit, style, and pictures which can only be described as titillating.
They are accepting beta sign-ups on the Playboy Manager site. Another thing we noted that makes this story even better is that one of the questions in the beta sign-up asks why you deserve a lifetime subscription to Playboy Magazine. They are giving away 5 of these to people who pre-register for the game. Those answers are magically appearing on the Playboy Manager twitter feed - it's good reading.

In its quarterly earnings call with investors on Wednesday, THQ execs let slip that the company is working on a new title called WWE Online.
The game is being developed in Asia, but beyond that we know absolutely nothing. Will it be a cross-platform MMO? A free-to-play PC game? A web-based browser game? An immersive holographic virtual reality 3D experience? We said we don't know, so stop with all the questions already.
THQ's wrestling games are some of its core moneymakers, so it's no surprise that the publisher is working on ways to expand its market. Although the WWE games remain popular, net sales for the series were down 25 percent last quarter over the same period last year.

HP manages to hold onto the top spot, despite a decline in shipments – Dell battered by lack of corporate demand
The UK saw first quarter shipments of PCs fall 5.1 per cent to 3m units, according to the latest figures from Gartner.
HP managed to retain the top spot in the UK despite seeing its shipments fall 6.8 per cent leaving it with 22.2 per cent of the market. Despite that, Dell was the worst hit, seeing its sales plummet by 21.7 per cent to 20.3 per cent, as the recession continued to hit sales in the corporate market where the vendor performs best.
However, Acer's continued dominance of the netbook market in the UK saw its sales rocket by more than 40 per cent, giving it 16.8 per cent of the market. Elsewhere, Toshiba, which has been quietly growing its market share in the UK for the past couple of years, saw its share of the market hit 9.1 per cent after it managed to grow its shipments by 7.7 per cent.
Apple also entered the UK top five for the first time, taking 4.8 per cent of the market after it managed to grow its shipments by 6.6 per cent.
In Western Europe, sales actually grew – albeit by 0.7 per cent – thanks to the continued sales success of netbooks and entrance of the telecoms market into the IT fray.
As in the UK, HP managed to maintain its lead – which it recently took after it usurped Acer last year. It saw its shipments grow by 1.2 per cent to 22.8 per cent, which was just enough to hold of Acer's resurgence thanks to netbook sales. It saw its sales increase by 31.6 per cent to 22.1 per cent.
On the continent, Dell suffered from exactly the same problem as in the UK, with its staple customers amongst the hardest hit by the recession and so the least likely to spend. That left Dell with a sales decline of 22.1 per cent and just 10.6 per cent of the Western European market.
Toshiba saw its shipments increase by 6.8 per cent, helping to get within one and a half per cent of Dell and third place, with 9.1 per cent. However, it was Asus that saw its share of the market grow the most, up by 43.4 per cent, taking it to 4.8 per cent of the Western European market.

Relic's released screenshots of the first 2v2 maps headed to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II in the forthcoming 1.30 patch.
The two maps pictured are Medean Cliff Mines and Ruins of Argus, says the Relic blog, which will be available in both Ranked and Custom matchttp://www.computerandvideogames.com...icle&id=214876hes.
"Cliff Mines is an awesome looking map where one team begins in an Imperial mining facility and the other in the open desert," it says.
Ruins meanwhile, "has been referred to internally as a sledgehammer map because of its small size. This map is just slightly larger than a 1v1 map which means no matter where you go you are likely to encounter the enemy."
The 2v2 game mode will launch with its own leaderboards, TrueSkill score and statistics tracking, the developer adds.
Also included in the upcoming patch (which is said to arrive this month) is improved skirmish AI, push-to-talk voice chat and Company of Heroes-style "sub-section options".

A teenager from the Russian city of Novosibirsk has been killed by a friend after a heated evening of Counter-Strike, Russian court documents reveal.
Apparently on May 19 of last year, the victim was playing CS against his "friend" in an internet cafe when things got nasty. Two separate fistfights broke out between the pair, and when they eventually left, the accused set upon the victim, beating him in the head and torso until he died at the scene.
The boy was found guilty of intention to inflict grievous bodily harm, and sentenced to four years detention in a juvenile prison.

There's a new beta opt-in procedure at Blizzard's recently revamped Battle.net that StarCraft II beta hopefuls should probably go check out.
Relatively quick and painless, the new beta opt-in procedure foregoes the usual uploading of DXDIAG files in favor of a more Blizzard-flavored method of obtaining your system specs. First log into or create a new Battle.net account and head to the beta profiles page. Then download the Blizzard system check utility, which quickly sorts through your computer's innards and uploads the data to Battle.net. Make sure you've got StarCraft II checked, click "Update Preferences", and you're done.
Now all you have to do is hope you get picked among the millions of others also opting in for the beta. Good luck!

While the real housing market may still be languishing, KingsIsle Entertainment has made the dream quite accessible for players of online virtual world Wizard101 (www.wizard101.com). A robust new housing system called Wizard Castles and Lands is being made live in the game today, enabling players to customize their own personal space. The new feature ranges from a dorm room to luxury private floating island villas that can be decorated inside and out, complete with blossoming cherry trees, sculptures and a car in the driveway.
"As with other aspects of Wizard101," said Wizard101 Director J. Todd Coleman, "we really wanted to make sure Castles and Lands was a feature all of our players could participate in from the very beginning." Wizard Castles and Lands provide a whole new aspect to the all-ages game of wizarding adventure, card collecting, spell casting, mini-games and more. All players, including Free-to-play (FTP), start out with a dorm room at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts with hundreds of decorating options from wallpaper to in-game trophies. Modest and luxury private Castles and Lands can be purchased with in-game gold, giving players a virtual space to invite their friends and showcase their Wizard101 style.
Beginning in the fantasy-inspired world of Wizard City, a turtle character named "Buxley Turtleton" is the Castles and Lands vendor who allows players to choose a type of Wizard City-themed house. Each world in the game will have a turtle character that sells the Castles and Lands which correspond to the world the player is in at that time.
Players can teleport to their own house or over to a friends house via their Friends List. Decorations can be obtained through many methods including in-game gold, PvP Arena Points, quest rewards, exploration, defeat of selected bosses, common or rare enemy drops and Crown (microtransaction) purchase. Features include:
* Three tiers of housing: Dorm, Modest Private and Luxury Private
* Two housing styles for each of five current worlds, beginning with Wizard City.
* Over 1,000 decorative housing items such as plants, statues, wall hangings, columns, pictures, furniture and more.
* Many variations, including more than 20 types of detailed wallpaper and flooring.
Popular with families who like to play together or connect over distance, Wizard101 was designed with the safety of young players in mind. It is rated E10+ by the ESRB. Anybody with a Windows-based PC can play the Free-to-Play areas of the game for as long as they like. Advanced content is available by subscription or microtransaction. Wizard101 gift cards can now be found at more than 13,000 retail outlets nationwide. For details, visit https://www.wizard101.com/site/home2...20a1589af60841

It's a "golden" opportunity! Atlus Online is offering its community the chance to get an early look at the portal's first full-length title: the fantasy-steampunk, massively multi-player online role-playing game Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent. Beginning today and continuing through May 12, the gaming-, anime-, and manga-focused portal will randomly distribute Golden Tickets each day to a sampling of players who have joined the Atlus Online community. These Golden Tickets will grant special early access to the game.
Peppered with promotions, prizes, and exclusive in-game items, the Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent Golden Tickets kick off a series of early access and beta rounds taking place over the next month. Golden Ticket holders' admission to the game will also roll over to additional rounds of early access as the stages are unveiled in the coming weeks.
"Having worked so hard gearing up to the launch of Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent, we couldn't be more excited about unveiling it for the first time to the Atlus Online community," says Tyler Kim, Head of the Online Division, Atlus U.S.A., Inc. "Our community members hold the opinions we care most about, and we look forward to receiving their feedback."
Atlus Online will continue to announce additional opportunities for early access and betas throughout May, with the game opening up to more participants during each stage of testing. Everyone who has signed up and played in the betas will also be entered to win a special gift from Atlus Online, a pair of steampunk-inspired goggles handmade by an artisan specifically for one lucky Neo Steam fan.
Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent is Atlus Online's first massively multi-player online role-playing game, which transports players to a world where two nations battle over a precious resource called Neo Steam. From the onset, customization is key to each player's experience, where they can choose which nation to join and select from a number of specialized classes. As players battle to expand their nation's resources and protect their borders from invasion, they must learn to harness steam technology to upgrade their equipment, learn new abilities, and progress in their chosen class. Adding to the immersive aspect of the fantasy-steampunk world, the game also features various forms of steam-based machines and vehicles for faster in-game traveling.

CCP Games has revealed that its intricate space-based MMO, EVE Online, has passed the 300,000 active subscribers level, a milestone which coincides with the sixth anniversary of its launch.
The Iceland-based company has seen its flagship game grow consistently over the past few years, with active subscribers jumping 22 per cent since the start of 2009, and setting a new record of almost 54,000 concurrent players in the single-shard universe.
"As the population of New Eden has grown, so have the instances of emergent behaviours of its pilots - a 6-year persistent history," read a statement. "A living history where truly brilliant strategies have unfolded. Truly terrible betrayals unveiled. We are excited to see what will happen next."
EVE is best known for its complex game design, which has given rise to a player-driven political situation and a fully player-dependent in-game economy.
The company is also at work on a second MMO project, although details remain sketchy.

El Segundo, Calif. - Wedding bells are ringing in OGPlanet's La Tale. Players can now date, become engaged and have lovely in-game wedding ceremonies in the 2D side-scrolling MMORPG.
With the newly implemented Affection System, La Tale players can recreate the natural process of falling in love. Once two players begin a relationship, they will gain affection points while they play. As they spend more and more time exploring the world of La Tale together, their relationship level will increase. Once the couple reaches the highest level of relationship points, one partner can present the other with a proposal, using special proposal items purchasable in-game.
Once the happy couple has decided to tie the knot, it will be time for the big event! The couple, dressed in their wedding attire, will be teleported to a wedding hall, where their friends can watch and chat as the ceremony takes place. The monsters of La Tale even get in on the action, dropping food presents for everyone in attendance.
After the wedding, the newlyweds will be entitled to many benefits, including special buffs in combat based on their affection score. They can wear Silver Rings to increase their stats, or Gold Rings to easily teleport to each other.
If married life doesn't turn out to be so blissful, couples can seek a divorce. Choosing to end a relationship, however, doesn't come without a cost. Players must pay to dissolve their marriage, and they will both be prevented from beginning another relationship for a set period of time.
"The new marriage system adds another layer of depth to La Tale, further immersing players in the virtual world" said Ross Park, La Tale's producer. "It also gives players a fun way to team up, and rewards them for building friendships and working together."
A video detailing the La Tale wedding system is available at .
More information about this and other La Tale updates and events can be found on the La Tale website at http://latale.ogplanet.com.
About La Tale
La Tale's whimsical art style and detailed 2D worlds bring a lighthearted touch to the MMORPG genre, and have won it a large following in Asia. Simple gameplay and intuitive quests make La Tale accessible for players of all ages, while the immersive storyline with a variety of characters, enemies and challenges keep the game intriguing.

Earlier today, Blizzard Entertainment announced that tickets for Blizzcon 2009, the fourth convention celebrating the Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft universes, would go on sale May 16. Tickets will be available for purchase from the official Blizzcon website and will be $125 each. A second block of tickets will go on sale May 30 for those fans that are unable to purchase tickets on the first date. To help fans this year, Blizzard has upgraded the Blizzard Store with a first come first serve queue system and fixed time limit for purchases, as well as linking Battle.Net accounts to ticket purchases to simplify the process.
Gamers that aren't able to purchase a ticket will also have two separate ways of catching the coverage from Blizzcon. Existing DirecTV customers that wish to check out coverage of the show will also have the option to purchase the Pay Per View event for $39.95, which will deliver a minimum of eight hours of live HD coverage per day from the show floor. The coverage will include interviews, demo and extras. DirecTV customers will also receive an Internet stream of the coverage at no extra charge. For non-DirecTV customers, the Internet stream, which will also be $39.95, will provide the same coverage for gamers around the world. Regardless of purchasing the DirecTV event or the internet stream, anyone ordering coverage of the event will receive this year's BlizzCon exclusive World of Warcraft in-game item.
"BlizzCon always offers us a great chance to meet players and celebrate our shared passion for gaming," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We look forward to delivering another entertaining and memorable experience to all attendees and to those joining us from home."
Blizzcon 2009 will host discussion panels, playtime with upcoming games, tournaments, contests and more from the Anaheim Convention Center on August 21 and 22.

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has revealed that the company will expand on its subscription business with two additional titles.
"On PC, our subscription revenue streams continue to grow with our Pogo and Warhammer businesses," said Riccitiello. "We also plan to introduce two additional online subscription services later in the fiscal year."
No information was provided beyond the brief mention in the initial talk, though Riccitiello expanded on this slightly in response to a question by Lazard Capital analyst Colin Sebastian, explaining why he was not ready to reveal the nature of the titles.
"We think they're consumer propositions first, and we want to use the best possible public relations to bring those to market in a way that will benefit the titles," he said. "We'll certainly be communicating what they are on or around the next call."
"So, it's not a deep dark secret, it's just sort of managing our marketing the best we know how."
In all, EA generated USD 110 million in non-GAAP revenue in its digital direct business in Q4, an increase of 16 per cent over the same period in the previous year.
EA currently operates two subscription services within this digital direct umbrella. Pogo, its casual games portal, ended the year with 1.8 million subscribers, an increase of 9 per cent over the previous year. Its other subscription product, MMORPG Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, ended the year with over 300,000 subscribers.

[Update: Bethesda tells us "We're seeing the same error, which is a Games for Windows Live DRM Install error. Microsoft is working on fixing it, and we'll let everyone know once we've verified it."]
The last Fallout 3 DLC didn't exactly launch smoothly -- users reported issues with the Xbox 360 version of "The Pitt," requiring Bethesda to release an updated version. The latest DLC, "Broken Steel," came out today, and it's also causing problems for players -- this time on the PC.
Would-be "Broken Steel" players are reporting on the Bethesda forums that installation of the DLC isn't working. After the files are downloaded through the Windows Live Marketplace, the installation stops and displays the message "Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009200D)."
Bethesda is aware of the issue -- "Dermont" from the company commented on the forum, "I am even getting the same issue." The team is "looking into it."

If you are one of the many War Plan Pacific players suffering from PBEM dysfunction, that dreaded affliction in which the desire to play opponents via email cannot be realized, it is time to rejoice and end the suffering! KE Studios, developer of the hit title, has just made available version 1.0.3 of War Plan Pacific which includes a brand new way to play the game against others: PBEM!
PBEM (Play By E-Mail) allows games to be played out at your leisure, without the need for syncing up a time to sit down and play with your opponent. War Plan Pacific was already the perfect strategic wargame for the gamer on the go, and now with the additional PBEM support it becomes even more busy gamer friendly! Just be warned, while the 1.0.3 patch cures players of PBEM dysfunction it does increase the likelihood of prolonged usage of War Plan Pacific, which if lasting for more than four hours at a time can lead to angry spouses, sleeping on the couch, and missed social events. But really don't worry, because it's well worth it.
It should be noted that to accommodate PBEM play certain gameplay elements have been modified when playing by PBEM. They include a modification to reaction movement and setting aggressiveness for groups arriving at their destinations since combat on the battle board is handled entirely by the computer. Complete details on how PBEM works and the changes can be found in the accompanying patch documentation.
Besides adding PBEM play to War Plan Pacific the version 1.0.3 patch also includes the following content:
* Support now for 1680x1050 and 1440x900 screen resolutions.
* Fixed bug in which a couple of light cruisers could prevent raids from hitting a base no matter how powerful the attacking force.
* Fixed bug in which invasions did not happen if the defender chose air.
* Fixed bug in which the Allies sometimes did not get adequate amphibious groups.
* Added a .wpp extension for saved games. Now players can simply double-click on a saved game to immediately launch the game. Additionally, one can drag and drop the file onto a War Plan Pacific desktop shortcut.

War Plan Pacific was developed by KE Studios and is published by Shrapnel Games, home to many independent games of distinction. It is available for Windows at only $39.95 as either a physical product shipped to your door or as a digital download. The download version is on sale now thru May 12th as part of our Download Days Sale Event. There is a demo that provides a nice introduction to the full game available at the product page, and you can check out a video of War Plan Pacific in action on You Tube.
Since being released in December of 2008 War Plan Pacific has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed wargames of recent release. Out of Eight, Flash of Steel, Gameshark, IGN, Wargamer, Armchair General, Cyberstratge, and Mike Kreuzer have all praised War Plan Pacific's elegant gameplay and accessibility. The designer, John Hawkins, has also been a featured guest on the premier strategy podcast, Three Moves Ahead. You can listen to his episode here.
War Plan Pacific features the entire war in the Pacific from 1941 until 1945, but playable in a single session. With multiple victory conditions and three starting scenarios players will find the game highly addictive as they search for their own elusive decisive battle to win the war. Scenarios can be edited and new ones created using nothing more than a text editor, although graphics are hard coded (sorry, no War Plan Atlantic mods).

Tripwire Interactive is pleased to announce Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad, the sequel to the hit PC title Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, winner of multiple awards: Voodoo Extreme's FPS and MP Game of the Year 2006, Wargamer's Best Action Game 2006, IGN Editor's Choice and many more.
Heroes of Stalingrad will take the Red Orchestra franchise into the next generation of gaming. Cutting edge graphics and audio built on Unreal Engine 3, inventive features and streamlined realism will deliver an unrivalled WWII experience. Focusing on the Battle of Stalingrad and the surrounding operations, both German and Russian, from July 1942 to February 1943 the game allows the player to experience one of the most brutal battles in all of human history. For the first time ever in a first person shooter gamers will be able to experience WWII from the Axis side in a German single player campaign. As always with the Red Orchestra franchise, we will aim to deliver unrivalled accuracy and attention to detail, along with gritty, vicious combat in multi-player, co-op and solo modes. Again, we have listened to the fans and have designed a whole set of new features to make the game more accessible and easy to get into – all while delivering the tactical shooter realism fans of the original game loved.
The Heroes of Stalingrad forums are also now open – head to www.HeroesofStalingrad.com for the teaser website and access to the forums. We will be releasing more information about the game over the next weeks and months, so keep checking back! Tripwire Interactive are taking the time to get the game right, so the release date will remain "when it is ready" for the time being.
