Due to the intrinsic limitations of machine translation, it's hard to say exactly what makes Fujitsu's latest supercomputer the "world's fastest," but we'll hesitantly believe for the time being. We're told that the SPARC64 VIIIfx (codename Venus) can churn through 128 billion calculations per second, which supposedly bests the current champ -- a chip from Intel -- by 2.5 times. An AP report on the matter states that Fujitsu shrunk the size of each central circuit, which in turn doubled the number of circuits per chip. 'Course, this beast won't be ready for supercomputer work for several years yet, giving the chip maker's biggest rivals plenty of time to sabotage its moment in the limelight.

New proposal seeks to bring licensed software protection laws into line with those of physical products
The EU is considering implementing a radical new law that would make software developers responsible for bad or insecure code, much in the same way that physical products are covered under consumer laws.
Currently, the laws governing consumer protection for physical products, like PCs and television, do not cover licensed software. However, under changes proposed by EU commissioners Vivane Reding and Meglena Kuneva developers would be forced to guarantee the quality of their code for two a period of years.
"The current status quo, where licensed products are exempt from EU law, is unsatisfactory," said Helen Kearns, spokesperson for Commissioner Kuneva.
Any extension to the EU Sales and Guarantee Directive would mean that consumers could, in theory, demand a refund on faulty software, or programs that don't run on their machine due to it not matching the required specification.
Kearns did accept that such a ruling would give consumers more opportunities to abuse the system. "On the one hand there is the risk of abuse,” she said, “but on the other it's not a good enough reason to say basic consumer protection should not apply."
Some commentators have warned that this could lead to a radical shift in the way that the channel works, and causing more headaches for retailers and distributors already suffering problems with RMAs.
They have also mooted that it could lead to some retailers avoiding stocking software that is known to have issues; something that could drive up the cost of quality assurance.
The BSA was one of the first to voice its concerns about the proposals. "Digital content is not a tangible good and should not be subject to the same liability rules as toasters,” the BSA's director of public policy, Francisco Mingorance, told the BBC.
"It is contractually licensed to consumers and not sold," he continued.
"These contracts are governed by civil law that provide consumers with multitude of remedies for breach of contract. We are not aware of any shortcomings of the legal frameworks with respect to digital content."
The proposals would also look to remove regional licensing agreements for software sold within the EU, causing further headaches for some vendors and resellers.

Take-Two Interactive has now sued 3D Realms over the cancellation of Duke Nukem Forever . Take-Two did not provide continuous funding for the game, but they did pay $12 million for the publishing rights to the game. A Bloomberg report quotes Take-Two's complaint as saying that 3D Realms "continually delayed the completion date" and "repeatedly assured Take-Two and the video-gaming community that it was diligently working toward competing development of the PC Version" of the game. (The complaint refers to 3D Realms as part of Apogee Software, Ltd., not to be confused with Apogee Software, LLC, the publisher behind the still-forthcoming Duke Nukem Trilogy.)

A new study has claimed that a remarkable 41 per cent of all software installations on PC last year were based on illegally pirated copies – a figure which amounts to a market value of $53bn.
The global piracy rate in 2007 was pegged at 38 per cent, but successes in territories such as China and Russia don’t seem to have eased the problem, Reuters reports.
The US is named as the best-behaved nation, with piracy rates of just 20 per cent whilst prime offender China saw a welcomed reduction, with illegal installations falling to 80 per cent – a reduction of ten per cent. There was also a five per cent drop in Russia.
Countries with piracy rates above 90 per cent include Georgia, Bangladesh, Armenia, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
Despite the growing problem, the global PC software market still grew in 2008, reaching $88bn.

A year and a half ago, we learned that Blizzard was hiring for an infinitely titillating "Next-Gen MMO," one which we assumed would be based on brand new intellectual property (as repeatedly hinted at by Blizzard COO Paul Sams). We haven't heard much about the project since then. However, the silence was recently broken by Blizzard community manager Zarhym, who confirmed on the official WoW forums that the upcoming MMO will "be a brand new franchise."
While this is the first official confirmation of the franchise's freshness we've heard, it's still up in the air as to what the genre of said project will be. If you'll remember, the game is reportedly being developed on the World of Warcraft engine until its developers work up a fittingly new interface. Therefore, we think it's safe to assume it won't be an online dating sim.

Flight simulator site Avsim has been "destroyed" by malicious hackers.
The site, which launched in 1996, covered all aspects of flight simulation, although its main focus was on Microsoft's Flight Simulator.
The attack took down the site's two servers and the owners had not established an external backup system.
The site's founder, Tom Allensworth, said that the site would be down for the foreseeable future and was unsure "if we can come back at all".
"The method of the hack makes recovery difficult, if not impossible, to recover from," Mr Allensworth said in a statement.
"AVSIM is totally offline at this time and we expect to be so for some time to come. We are not able to predict when we will be back online, if we can come back at all. "
Backlash
The attack has shocked the flight sim community, with hundreds of blogs, posts and tweets. One user on the simflight.com website said that "there's a special place in hell for hackers who pull stunts like this".
Speaking to the BBC, Derek Davis, editor of PC Pilot magazine, said: "It looks like 13 years of hard work on Toms part could have been wiped out.
"Avsim is an important site, because it services the whole community as a source of community developed terrains, skins, and mods - its contribution has been immeasurable," he said.
Mr Allensworth has set up a temporary forum for Avsim users while the future of the site is decided.
On it, he explained the site's backing up process, although he did not explain why the firm had no external media storage.
"Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers.
"The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation."
Mr Davis said he thought the site still had a future:
"I'm sure Avsim will rise like a phoenix from the ashes and will be bigger and better then before."

The dream of owning a keyboard embedded with a full-blown PC running XP on an Atom N270 processor and 5-inch, 800 x 480 pixel touchscreen display/trackpad is nearly upon us. A dream, quite honestly, nobody had prior to seeing the reveal of the 2-pound Eee Keyboard prototype at CES in January. Engadget Chinese has it on authority that this oddball all-in-one will ship in June with specs that should include a 32GB SSD, 802.11n, Bluetooth, HDMI-out, stereo speakers and mic as we saw during our hands-on with the Eee Keyboard back in March. With any luck, ASUS will also be embedding some form of ultra-wideband HDMI as promised in January alongside one of those UWB monitor prototypes they had on display at CeBIT. One thing's for sure: all will be revealed at Computex in Taipei in just a few weeks. Can you wait?

At 1GHz, the ATI Radeon HD 4890 is the fastest-clocked graphics card in the planet—a world's first. It's not a new chip, however, just a "factory-overclocked" air-cooled 4890 that looks like a Ferrari.
So that's a bit of a cheat: In theory, you can buy the 850MHz version and overclock it yourself without paying the premium for the 1GHz version. Or maybe you can buy the factory-overclocked 1GHz version and overclock it again so your PC melts and reaches the Earth's core.

Ready for some more delicious Zune / Windows Mobile rumors after today's June Zune letdown? Well buckle up -- the always-sharp Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet says she's got specs for Windows Mobile 7 Chassis 1, the heart of that rumored "Pink" smartphone, and they're pretty wild. According to the list, Chassis 1 phones will all have 3.5-inch or larger multitouch displays with ARM v6+ processors and OpenGL ES 2.0-compatible graphics hardware, 256MB or more of RAM and 1GB or more of storage, as well as at least a 3 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, a compass, and accelerometer. Oh, and glory be -- a 3.5mm headphone jack is required. Here's the kicker, though: NVIDIA's Tegra platform is specifically listed as meeting the core CPU requirements, as well as TI's OMAP 3 platform and "Qualcomm 8k," which sounds to us like Snapdragon's QSD8xxx-series chips. If you've been following along, you know that all three of these (Tegra in particular) have been bandied about as potential Microsoft phone platforms, so it makes perfect sense to us that Microsoft's giving its hardware partners a choice of currently-available high-powered platforms for Chassis 1 -- especially since we've been hearing lots of whispers of hardware based on these chips in the works.
Here's the thing, though: we've also always been told that "Pink" is the codename for Zune software and services on Windows Mobile, so something tells us that Chassis 1 phones running Windows Mobile 7 will feature a strong dose of Zune flavoring -- a plan Steve Ballmer's repeatedly confirmed in the past year. So how do we think this all fits together? Well, we'll slightly revise our previous totally crazy, off-the-wall prediction: we think "Pink" is the codename for a new consumer-focused version of Windows Mobile that integrates Zune services, running not only on a touchscreen Zune HD, but on several third-party phones. Are we crazy? Yes, absolutely -- but you've got to admit the pieces are coming together.

NDOORS Interactive today officially announced their newest title, WonderKing. Planned for release in the second half of 2009, WonderKing is an unconventional MMORPG from the developer Ryu & Soft that is designed for gamers of all skill level. The beta is scheduled to launch early this summer.
"With the success of Atlantica Online and Luminary: Rise of the GoonZu in the US, we feel the market is eager for a variety of MMO games," said Peter Kang, CEO of NDOORS Interactive. "WonderKing's introduction to the North American market will offer a truly encapsulating experience for gamers of every taste and preference."
WonderKing is a 2D, side-scrolling MMORPG that takes players on an adventurous journey with story-by-story quests, much like a fantasy novel. Along the way, players will travel from beautiful beaches to murky marshlands and frigid snowfields as they battle to save the world. Don't let the lack of a third dimension fool you, as this game is a highly developed MMORPG, including features such as:
• Home Town System: Players can personally decorate a private room where they can rest and store items and trophies.
• Pet System: Adorable, loyal AI animals will aid in hunting, item collecting, and other tasks.
• Class Change: The game allows players to focus their character's abilities and change between classes to learn powerful techniques (mage, swordsman, thief, and scout).
• Mounts and Vehicles: Get moving with a variety of vehicles to ride and animals to mount, providing boosts to attack and defense.
• Castle Battles: Engage in PvP battles using siege warfare across castles.

Playlogic Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq OTC: PLGC.OB), an independent worldwide publisher of entertainment software, and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox Licensing) announced today that Aliens in the Attic, the family friendly, action–adventure video game based on the Twentieth Century Fox movie, will be available in retail stores nationwide on July 28 — three days in advance of the film's nationwide release. The new game will be available for the Wii system, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and Windows PC.
The Aliens in the Attic video game will follow the storyline of the adventure-comedy film about a group of kids on a family vacation who must stave off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-conquering ambitions; all while trying to keep their parents from finding out! The video game will offer players two different gameplay perspectives depending upon which video game platform players choose.
"Aliens in the Attic provides endless hours of fun for the whole family," said Rogier Smit, executive vice president for Playlogic. "Fox has created a movie full of heart-pumping action, thrills, comedy and good old fashion entertainment and we've translated those features right into the gameplay."
Aliens in the Attic for DS puts players in the shoes of the movie's main characters; Tom, Hannah and their cousin Jake. Players will use the children's abilities – Hanna's jump skill, Tom's engineering skills and Jake's weapon knowledge – to rid the planet, and the upstairs, from the nasty invaders. This action packed version of the game features multiple levels within each beautifully designed gameplay area and is loaded with boss fights, tons of puzzle elements and a variety of weapons to choose from including grenades and a customizable gun.
Aliens in the Attic for Wii, PS2 and PC gives players a whole new way to experience the storyline by allowing them to assume the identity of one of four different alien explorers whose mission it is to take over the summer home, and possibly the world! This version of the game features 15 exciting levels that are carried out in four different locations. Plus, players can switch between characters on the fly for fast-paced action!
"Aliens in the Attic is a great summer family film and provides a storyline that is perfect for gaming," said Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox Licensing. "Playlogic has created a game that will extend the film experience for gamers of all ages."
Aliens in the Attic the movie, co-scripted by one of the writers of Madagascar and the Academy Award®-winning Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbits, is an adventure/comedy about kids on a family vacation who must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions—while the youngsters' parents remain clueless about the battle.
