City of Heroes creator Cryptic Studios has announced that its upcoming MMORPG Champions Online has been delayed seven weeks over quality concerns.
The title has been pushed back from its original July 14 launch to September 1, and according to design director and executive producer Bill Roper, the game has been delayed for the sake of polish.
"It is critically important for an MMO to be as good as it possibly can be at launch," said Roper. "Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realised that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time. So that's what we're going to give it."
"Cryptic has a proven track record of releasing solid games and we want to maintain that with Champions Online," he added.
Champions Online was first announced by Cryptic and then-publisher Take-Two in February of 2008. A closed beta of the game has been running since October of 2008. In December Cryptic Studios was acquired by Atari, causing Take-Two to drop the game from its release schedule.

The Microsoft exclusive for Fallout 3's downloadable add-ons won't exist for much longer, as Bethesda has announced plans to bring all downloadable content for Fallout 3 to PlayStation 3. The fun isn't over for Fallout 3 PC and Xbox 360 owners just yet, however. Bethesda has also announced two new expansions, titled Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta, that will come to Microsoft platforms first.
Point Lookout takes players to a new swampy area with new quests. Mothership Zeta features a return of the aliens who are described by Bethesda as "pissed." The download allows players to experience an alien abduction. Both Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will be priced at 800 Microsoft points (US $9.99). Point Lookout will be available in June for Xbox 360 and PC while Mothership Zeta is slated for July on the same platforms.
Operation: Anchorage will be released for PS3 in June with The Pitt and Broken Steel following with 4-6 weeks between each. Exact release dates will be announced in the future. Both Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will eventually find their way over to PS3 as well, though they will come after the first three add-ons have made the leap.
All Fallout 3 downloads are on their way to PS3.But wait, there's more! Disc-based versions of the game add-ons are in the works. Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #1 will be released on May 26 for Xbox 360 and PC. It includes The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage. Add-on Pack #2, which includes Broken Steel and Point Lookout will be released in August for Xbox 360 and PC. PlayStation 3 will not get these disc-based versions of the add-ons. However, those on PS3 without access to the downloads will be able to buy the Fallout 3: Game of the Year edition that is coming out in October. It will include the full game plus all five add-ons and have a price of $59.99 on Xbox 360 and PS3 and $49.99 for PC.
And if that isn't enough for you to digest, read on for IGN's exclusive first interview with Todd Howard, Game Director for Fallout 3, that dives into more details on the newly announced add-ons as well as extra details on the port to PS3.
IGN: Is Point Lookout a reference to Point Lookout State Park in Maryland? Is that where the DLC takes place?
Todd Howard: Yes, yes it is.
IGN: Does the substantial history of Point Lookout State Park play a role in this expansion?
Todd Howard: In some ways, yes, such as the civil war stuff. Its modern incarnation is different, since we do treat it as we see it from the Fallout timeline, post 1950. More of a seaside vacation town with a boardwalk.
Like Operation: Anchorage (pictured here), you can expect a lot of new art for Mothership Zeta.IGN: Without spoiling too much for us, what is the general plotline of Point Lookout's new quests?
Todd Howard: Yeah, I really don't want to spoil it yet. It has a swampy-horror vibe. It's the brainchild of Joel Burgess and Nate Purkeypile, two of our best people here. Their pitch was, "picture backwoods Maryland, where the bombs didn't actually fall, but the world has left it behind." It's also big. Really big. It's a mini wasteland swamp to explore. It has a main quest, side quests, etc.
IGN: What about for Mothership Zeta?
Todd Howard: If you poke around Fallout 3, you can find a crashed UFO with an alien inside that is broadcasting a signal your Pip-Boy picks up. This is where you can get the alien blaster. Well, Mothership Zeta is answering the distress call. You get abducted and the whole thing takes place on a giant alien spacecraft. It's one of those classic 50's B movie type things, but with a harder edge.

We knew AMD would be celebrating its victory over Intel and its record $1.45 billion fine doled out by EU over violation of antitrust rules, but we figured that just meant a very fancy cake and maybe a trip to the local zoo. Nay, we were mistaken, as the chip maker has gone all out in creating an entire website dedicated to its victory. "AMD Break Free" is pretty amazing in its thoroughness, and you'll find all kinds of court documents, press releases, explanations of antitrust laws, and even a news feed to follow further developments. Of course, Intel's appeal is a sure sign this case will be drag on for a very long time, possibly even become overturned, and none of this apparent gloating is gonna help one bit in getting the company back into the top ten rankings for chip manufacturers.

coLinux (Cooperative Linux) is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. More generally, Cooperative Linux (short-named coLinux) is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine. For instance, it allows one to freely run Linux on Windows 2000/XP, without using a commercial PC virtualization software such as VMware, in a way which is much more optimal than using any general purpose PC virtualization software. In its current condition, it allows us to run the KNOPPIX Japanese Edition on Windows.

Riot Games has just unveiled details about its latest two champions for the upcoming PC game League of Legends: Clash of Fates. Ashe and Sivir have been added to the official roster of champions to battle on the Fields of Justice. Full bios for Ashe the Frost Archer and Sivir the Battle Mistress can be found embedded below.
Ashe the Frost Archer
As a direct descendant of Avarosa, one of the three legendary sisters who each claimed dominion over the scattered tribes dwelling in icy tundra known as Freljord, Ashe mirrors her ancestor's unparalleled mastery with the bow. Ashe has come to the Institute of War in service to the Institute's summoners, seeking enough influence and favor to finally bring peace to her realm – a realm that has endured civil strife since the Time of the Three Sisters. With enough victories under her belt, she hopes to have the means to finally claim the throne that had long eluded Avarosa.
Ashe is one of but a few hearty souls from Freljord who can claim the title of Frost Archer. Along with mastery of the bow, Ashe is renowned for her resourcefulness even in the most dire of environments. She has mastered the ability to channel the frigid climate of the tundra into her arrows, slowing her foes with but a single flick of her wrist. She can even deliver a vicious shot from hundreds of yards away that freezes even the strongest of foes in their tracks. As tenacious as she is beautiful, she has earned the respect of ally and foe alike in the Fields of Justice.
Frost Shot (Active) - Toggle ability, While on, each of Ashe's attacks slow her target's movement speed at the cost of mana.
Volley (Active) - Ashe fires 9 arrows in a cone for 150% damage. Volley slows enemies based on your current level of Frost Shot.
Archers Mark (Passive) - Each time Ashe kills a unit, she gains some extra gold.
Enchanted Crystal Arrow (Active) - Ashe fires a missile at any point on the map. If the arrow encounters a champion it damages him and nearby enemies. These units are stunned for up to 5 secs, based on how far the arrow has traveled.
Focus (Passive) - While out of combat, Ashe's critical strike chance increases every 3 seconds, but lasts for only one attack.
Sivir the Battle Mistress
The beautiful and deadly mercenary known as Sivir has earned many titles throughout her illustrious career, but the one she held until recently was "Battle Mistress of Nox". Now, however, she is known as "The Battle Mistress" after breaking her contract with the Noxian High Command. Sivir dared to object to the Noxian war against the peaceful island state of Ionia; her predictions of a bloody stalemate came true when the Ionians held off the relentless assaults of the Noxians. Claiming that the Noxian High Command had lost its direction, she left Nox and made her services available to the Institute of War. The Noxian High Command have sent a number of contracted assassins to deal with their rogue mercenary, but none have yet to deliver… or survive.
The Battle Mistress brings an unparalleled mastery of bladed weaponry and battlefield tactics to the Fields of Justice. Her weapon of choice is the "crossblade" – a large four-bladed weapon that she uses as a ranged weapon. She may hurl it with such force that all foes in her way are wounded twice – once as the weapon flies past them, and then again as it returns effortlessly to Sivir. She has mastered the ability to ricochet the crossblade off her foes, inflicting grievous wounds to multiple opponents. Her skill and experience in combat allow her to not only anticipate the tactics of her foes, but also lead her compatriots to victory by bestowing increased movement and combat haste. Time and time again, Sivir proves that she has earned the right to call herself "The Battle Mistress".
Spiral Blade (Active) - Sivir hurls her Crossblade like a boomerang, dealing damage each way.
Ricochet (Active) - Each of Sivir's attacks will bounce between targets, dealing reduced damage with each successive hit.
Spell Shield (Active) - Creates a magical barrier which blocks a single enemy spell cast on Sivir. Lasts up to 20 seconds.
On The Hunt (Active) - Grants Sivir and nearby allies faster movement and attack speeds for a short period.
Sprint (Passive) - Sivir has an increased chance to dodge attacks while moving.

This week Funcom and a worldwide community of gamers celebrate the one year anniversary of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game 'Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures'. One year after the mighty barbarian burst onto the online gaming market, shipping over 1.2 million copies around the world, Funcom is seeing a significant increase in players and new customers per month. Activity levels have risen significantly, and the communities are thriving with more and more players finding their way into the game.
"We are very pleased to see that more players are experiencing 'Age of Conan'," says Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Funcom, Morten Larssen. "The team has been working diligently on improving the game since launch, with several major updates that in addition to improving technology and client stability, also have added hours of more content, new gameplay features, and more. The fact that we are now also seeing longer average subscription periods is a testament to the fact that 'Age of Conan' is just getting better and better, and with the launch of the recent trial campaign there has never been a better time to check out the game than now!"
Since launching in May 2008, several major updates have been released for 'Age of Conan'. These updates have added hours upon hours of additional content such as new lands to explore, new quests to undertake, new equipment for characters, and several new gameplay features. The technology behind the game has also advanced significantly, with improved framerate, smoother gameplay and the inclusion of DirectX 10. There are currently 120 people working on 'Age of Conan' divided into the live team and the expansion team, with several exciting updates planned for the time ahead. The team is currently doing the finishing touches on Update 5, an update that will introduce a whole new itemization system, new game areas and more.
"It has been an interesting and challenging year, and I am very proud of the hard work that the team has put into improving the game," says Game Director on 'Age of Conan' Craig Morrison. "We have focused on adding content, improving existing content, and adding new gameplay features. Player feedback has been very important throughout the whole process, and will continue to be so as we continue improving the game."
In celebration of the one year anniversary, all characters in 'Age of Conan' will be treated to free fireworks this week, and a contest has been set up where players are urged to head out into the streets of Hyboria to color the sky and capture the festivities in a screenshot for a chance to win some exciting prizes! Soon players will be able to purchase additional character slots, and as an anniversary gift, Funcom is awarding all veteran players that have six months or more accumulated subscription time with a free character slot. For more information on the anniversary celebrations and the anniversary gifts, please visit the 'Age of Conan' community website.
Launching in May last year 'Age of Conan' quickly became a smash hit in retail, shipping over 1.2 million copies around the world. In North America, the most prominent online gaming market in the west, 'Age of Conan' became the third best-selling PC title of the year only beaten by 'Spore' and 'World of Warcraft'. In the weeks after launch 'Age of Conan' simultaneously topped the charts in 17 countries, and the game received critical acclaim from gaming press across the globe. 'Age of Conan' is now available in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Polish, and is being prepared for launch in Korea as well.
'Age of Conan' is currently available as a free trial. Download yours today at http://www.ageofconan.com/trial.

The recent film X-Men Origins: Wolverine crushed the spirits of many a merry Marvel fan. Deadpool, the beloved "Merc with a Mouth," was turned into a bizarre science experiment gone wrong. For those worried the old Deadpool you love is gone for good in Marvel-licensed videogames, rest easy. As reported earlier this month, the comic-book version of Deadpool is one of the 24 playable characters in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2.
As can be seen from the brand new trailer below, Deadpool has his familiar costume from the comics and none of the baggage of X-Men Origin: Wolverine's weak plot points. Deadpool is an acrobatic character who mixes gunplay with hand-to-hand combat moves. His animations were influenced by Parkour and his attacks are notably more extravagant than other characters.
As with every character in MUA 2, Deadpool has a unique fusion power with each one of his allies. One of the more potent fusion moves is when Deadpool teams with Hulk. The green behemoth rips up a chunk of the ground and tosses it in the air, while Deadpool teleports onto the its surface, spreads grenades on the debris and leaps to safety as it explodes.

Every now and then a new- or old-media journalist tries to explain to everyone why Linux is not yet ready for the desktop. However all those men who graduated from their engineering universities years ago have only superficial knowledge about operating systems and their inner works. An unknown author from Russia has decided to draw up a list of technical reasons and limitations hampering Linux domination on the desktop."
Some of the gripes listed here really resonate with me, having just moved to an early version of Ubuntu 9.10 on my main testing-stuff laptop; it's frustrating especially that while many seemingly more esoteric things work perfectly, sound now works only in part, and even that partial success took some fiddling.

Over the past several days, Valve has been releasing details on an update to Team Fortress 2. They first revealed that the Sniper was taking its turn in a series of class upgrades, getting a bow and arrow that's capable of pinning an enemy to a wall. Next, they showed off a pair of new maps — a sawmill arena map that's in the midst of heavy rainfall and a circular map built around a doomsday weapon. Valve also mentioned a new game mode called Payload Race — it's similar to a regular Payload match, but both teams have a cart to push. The next day brought about an electrified shield for the Sniper, and hinted that the Spy would be getting an update as well. The following announcement confirmed it, introducing a device that would allow the Spy to feign death, and another that lets the Spy remain invisible permanently, only draining their power while in motion.

Arkane Studios has announced that its promising FPS The Crossing has been put on hold.
According to Arkane CEO Raphael Colantonio, production of the game has suspended due to funding issues.
In fact, Colantonio told Joystiq that the developer ran into “unexpected financial challenges” a number of months ago, and now states that the group has now “shifted our efforts to other very good projects.”
The Crossing was an ambitious collaborative effort between Arkane and Washington-based developer Valve. The game was based on Valve’s Source engine while its visual concept and setting was designed by prized art director Viktor Antonov.
Prior to his work on The Crossing, Bulgaria-born Antonov worked on designing Half Life 2’s visual landscape and helped create the game’s iconic City 17. In 2006 he founded his design studio – the Building – in Paris. Just months later, The Crossing was announced, with Antonov working on crafting a neo-gothic Paris setting.
Yet perhaps the most intriguing aspect of The Crossing was how it aimed to merge together both multiplayer and singleplayer games. Early reports suggested that the majority of players would enter a map as antagonists while one was selected as the hero.
Such a concept is not new; it can be found in a multiplayer mode on Valve’s Left 4 Dead, but also featured as part of a counter-co-op mode in Rare’s Perfect Dark. Yet The Crossing was the first game attempting to base an entire game on this premise.
Details of The Crossing have been scarce ever since the its announcement. No publisher had been confirmed for the game, though in November 2008 Electronic Arts’ aim to slash six percent of its workforce had – according to Colantonio – led to an “unfortunate consequence on our collaboration”.
Arkane is now focusing on an unspecified number of other projects. Two of those projects are believed to be underway at Arkane’s remote studio in Austin, Texas. One of those is suspected to be an FPS title, the other an iPhone game headed up by former Deus Ex lead designer Harvey Smith.
According to a CV from level designer Jeff Touchstone, The Crossing had been in development in Arkane Austin in some form.

The Sims 3, one of EA’s key titles for 2009, has spilled onto torrent trackers a full week before the game is released across North America.
Rumours of the leak first appeared on a GamePolitcs report. Casualgaming has since identified a number of trackers linking to a 4.9 GB file packaged with a crack to illicitly run the game. Comments on certain trackers are already expressing views about how The Sims 3 plays.
The news marks a painful and unjust blow to EA’s fortunes. The publisher had very recently exhibited a rare degree of flexibility and diplomacy by removing unpopular DRM technologies from its range of PC products.
If such flagrant disregard to the rights of EA content continues, then the group may once again be forced to employ contentious methods to restrict piracy.

Having proved to be a reliable money-spinner on consoles, the LEGO Star Wars game brand is venturing online with a new free-to-play episodic title on LEGO’s Star Wars portal.
The game, which is entitled LEGO Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2, is playable in a browser (though it does require the installation of Unity 3D) and will be familiar to anyone who has played the previous console outings.
“It was a great pleasure to work with our friends at the LEGO Group one more time,” Pablo Mayer, game producer at developer Three Melons, stated.
“We are thrilled to have the chance to work with such a rich IP as Star Wars, which we are all fans of. And the opportunity came with perfect timing, because we now possess all the capabilities needed to create the game we had always dreamed of.”
LEGO’s internet content manager Sten Lysdahl added: “Making a game for the LEGO Star Wars franchise is not an easy task. Even though it is not a video game, expectations are still very high.
“Online advergames are an important part of our online strategy and we are very pleased with the work done by our continuous partner, Three Melons, in this project. To be honest the result is amazing and we are certain that the kids and fans will feel the same.”
15 levels are to be released in total, with the first part being playable now at the official portal.

A web tool hailed as a significant rival to search giant Google has gone live to the public.
Wolfram Alpha is called a computation knowledge engine rather than a search engine and wants to change the way people use online data.
It aims to give people direct answers to queries rather than send them to other sites where they may find what they are seeking.
The system is the brainchild of British-born physicist Stephen Wolfram.
Wolfram Alpha was unveiled in late April and since then has been publicly demonstrated and some people have had a chance to run queries through it.
Typically the results it returns are annotated pages of data rather than a simple list of other sites that might help resolve a user's query.
For example, if asked about the weather in Manchester it would present a graph of average temperatures, rainfall and other salient data.
The computational horsepower behind the main site works out answers to question as they are put by grabbing data from databases and consulting feeds of relevant information.
Will it be a Google, changing the way we see the web and the world - or will it be be a Cuil, a much-hyped search engine that sinks without trace after the initial interest?
BBC Technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones

Wolfram Alpha can be asked known facts, such as the height of mountains, or be asked to generate new information such as up to date figures for a nation's GDP.
It can also handle complicated mathematical queries, plot statistics and produce charts of natural events.
The data it consults is chosen and managed by staff at Wolfram Research who ensure it can be displayed by the system. Behind the scenes Wolfram Alpha has about 10,000 CPUs spread across five data centres that it draws on when generating answers.
During a demonstration at Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, Dr Wolfram said: "Our goal is to make expert knowledge accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime."
Dr Wolfram played down talk that the system would be a Google killer and instead presents it as a way for people to get more out of the information on the web.
The final tuning and testing of the system was webcast live during the weekend before the official launch.
Prior to the start of the webcast and final testing, Theo Grey, co-founder of Wolfram Research, said: "If we do melt down when we go live it will not be for lack of effort, or any sort of naive idea of how many queries we might get. It will be because of overwhelming response."

It's been a long, long time since Microsoft Research first released its findings on Virtual WiFi, or VWiFi, technology that would allow a single wireless network adapter to act like two, two, two NICs in one. Now that innovation is finally ready for the big show: inclusion in Windows 7 -- or at least some flavors of it. The tech lets one piece of WiFi hardware be represented in Windows as two separate adapters, meaning you can connect to two hotspots simultaneously if you like, or turn your virtual device into an access point that others can connect to. Apparently this functionality is indeed included in the latest release candidate, but as there are no drivers currently supporting this feature it's not enabled. Expect the driver situation to change very soon, and expect hotel fee-based wireless internet access companies to start crying foul not long after.

As promised in an a forum post earlier in the month, id will be rolling out new maps for their successful in-browser shooter Quake Live in the near, near future. However, we didn't really expect their benevolence to come in such enormous portions -- starting tomorrow, they'll be adding a new map to the game every week for six weeks. Why, that's ... hold on. (Carry the one, find the square root, find the value of B ...) That's six maps!
Tomorrow's new battleground is a remake of Hidden Fortress, ripped from the Dreamcast version of Quake III Arena. id has promised to include more classic maps in its upcoming downloadable salvo, so keep your eyes peeled for more familiar fragging grounds over the next month and a half
