Sony Online Entertainment's massively-multiplayer RPG The Matrix Online will be shut down on July 31, the game's online community lead has confirmed.
In a message posted on the game's official web forums community lead and producer Daniel Meyers broke the news to the community.
"Now we’ve seen how far the rabbit hole goes and it's time to wake up from that dream (or go back to sleep, depending how you look at it)," said Meyers. "On July 31, 2009, we will be jacking out for the last time. It's a bittersweet moment for everyone involved with the game; as a player or as a developer."
"It has been a good run," he continued. "Where many games have fizzled out before or shortly after launch, by August we will have lived on in our home at SOE for more than 4 years. To this day, I have never worked with a community as dedicated as The Matrix Online community."
The Matrix Online was initially developed by Monolith for publisher Ubisoft, which dropped the game in early 2004. The game was picked up by Sega later that year, and launched in March of 2005. Within months, the title was taken over by Sony Online Entertainment, which has overseen the title ever since

AMD's newfangled ATI Radeon E4690 may not be the next Crysis killer, but it should do just fine in next-gen arcade and slot machines. All kidding aside (sort of...), this new embedded graphics set is said to triple the performance of AMD's prior offerings in the field, bringing with it 512MB of GDDR3 RAM, DirectX 10.1 / OpenGL 3.0 support and hardware acceleration of H.264 and VC-1 high-definition video. The 35mm chip also differentiates itself by integrating directly onto motherboards and taking on many of the tasks that are currently assigned to the CPU, but alas, it doesn't sound as if we'll be seeing this in any nettops / netbooks anytime soon ever.

Anyone looking to dig into BioWare's upcoming Dragon: Age Origins should mark October 20th, 2009 on their calendars. The company has confirmed to IGN that's the release date for its role-playing game across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms in North America.
Billed as something of a 'spiritual successor' to the revered Dungeons & Dragons-based Baldur's Gate computer RPGs of roughly a decade ago, Dragon Age: Origins will follow an original story in a new fantasy world.
Since E3 2008 BioWare has been doing quite a bit of press with its title, which you can find conveniently compiled in our Dragon Age information center. We'll be bringing you even more impressions and media when E3 2009 kicks off in Los Angeles next week.

The alpha version of Google Chrome is now available for GNU/Linux. Google Chrome developer and former Firefox lead Ben Goodger has some problems with the platform though. His complaints range from the lack of a standardised UI toolkit, inconsistencies across applications, the lack of a unified and comprehensive HIG, to GTK not being a very compelling toolkit. With Adobe getting twitchy about the glibc fork and previously describing the various audio systems as welcome to the jungle, is it time to concentrate on consolidation and standardisation in GNU/Linux in general, and the desktop in particular?

BMOW (Big Mess O' Wires) is a DIY PC, complete with a hand built 8-bit CPU. Built by a game developer named Steve Chamberlain, this bad boy operates at 2MHz and sports 512KB memory, two-color video output, and a 512 x 480 display. According to Wired, the hand-wrapped CPU is closest in design to the MOS Technology 6502 processor (previously seen in such classic machines as the Apple II, Commodore 64, and some early Atari game consoles), and it took him about a year and a half from design to finish. Visitors to the Maker Faire in San Francisco can see the machine in person (and play chess on it, to boot) over the weekend. The rest of yinz can feel free to hit the read link for meticulous build details and lots of colorful pictures.

NCsoft, the world's premier publisher and developer of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), today announced the details for the Aion standard and Limited Collector's Edition retail products. NCsoft expects to launch Aion, its highly anticipated fantasy MMO game, in the West this fall. Aion has exceeded expectations and captivated gaming populations in Korea, where it won the prestigious Grand Award of 2008, and in China, where Aion garnered unprecedented numbers of paying players during its launch week last month. In Aion, gamers explore a celestial world of breath-taking beauty and epic adventure. Players create either winged Elyos or Asmodian avatars, sworn enemy races that discover a common foe: the twisted and depraved Balaur.
When Aion launches, players can purchase the Aion Limited Collector's Edition box through multiple retail channels. The centerpiece of the Aion Limited Collector's Edition is a 6 1/2-inch hand-painted figurine of the powerful Aiva, a female winged Asmodian Daeva. Aiva sports detachable wings and wields a removable axe. The Limited Collector's Edition features several exclusive in-game items, including the Black Cloud Wings, which greatly enhance flight time, the Black Cloud Earring, which boosts health and mana while playing, and an exclusive title that enhances an avatar's abilities.
Additional in-game items include two exclusive character animations, called emotes, as well as a special dye color to customize player avatars' equipment. Opening the box uncovers two dual-sided posters depicting maps of Elysea and Asmodae, the home regions of the two player races. The Aion Limited Collector's Edition box also contains the official Aion soundtrack by composer Yang Bang-Ean (known as Ryo Kunihiko in Japan), the Aion game client on two DVDs, a quick reference card, and a game manual.
Aion's standard version first production run is packaged in a premium SteelBook metal case, which includes the game DVDs, a user manual, and a quick reference card.
In Aion, players experience the thrill of flight as a strategic and integral part of gameplay that touches combat, quests, and exploration. In addition to unprecedented character customization and unmatched visuals, Aion invites players to soak up its breath-taking world through exploration of more than 1,500 quests, intense visceral combat, and a deep crafting system. For the first time in an MMO, Aion introduces a new game system that pits players against each other and their environment simultaneously in an otherworld zone called the Abyss.
The Aion Limited Collector's Edition will sell at an anticipated price of US$69.99, while the Aion standard edition will sell at an anticipated price of US$49.99. Both retail packages include 30 days of game time. After 30 days, a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99 for the game service will apply. Other pricing options will also be available. Pre-order purchases, available at retail stores June 9, can be applied to the Aion Limited Collector's Edition or the standard edition of Aion. Details about pre-order benefits and subscription pricing options for Aion will be announced at a later date.

With the new large Patch 1.7 "Return of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom", Frogster will soon deliver additional new game contents for Runes of Magic. Among other things, this update enlarges the world of the online role-playing game with new expansion potentials for guild castles. Moreover, the instance "Ruins of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom" is extended by a high-level area with new boss adversaries. The release of "Return of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom" is scheduled for 3 June 2009.
With this update, guilds can, for collected resources, erect special buildings in their castle yard. Step by step, these guilds unlock more and stronger constructions from the technology tree. Thus, the workshop is available only after the erection of a school, and powerful rune towers are available to the guilds only if they have considerably advanced the expansion of their castle. All buildings grant the guild special bonuses, from enhanced riding speed through the potential to mine resources up to powerful defensive works, which are in turn tactical elements in the planned guild vs. guild wars.
Players at level 50 can now plan new trips to the "Ruins of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom" again. So far, the dungeon was conceived for adventurers at levels 35 to 40, but this update extends it by a completely newly designed area for high-level groups with new bosses and, of course, new rewards.
Furthermore, the content patch introduces Elite skills for the levels 40 and 45. Pet collectors can rejoice – permanent pets will become available with the update.
Frogster to Show New Content from Runes of Magic at E3 Frogster will be showing the new content from the upcoming add-on behind closed doors at the E3 next week in Los Angeles in On Floor Meeting Room 5074 to media and distribution partners by appointment only.

Are you ready to have your mind blown by some truly incredible gadget news? No, we're not talking about our peek at the Zune HD with none other than Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. In fact, we have spicy hot new Windows licensing details. According to Tech ARP, Microsoft will soon allow end users to downgrade from Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate editions to either Windows Vista Business or Window XP Professional. If that weren't enough, OEMs may now choose to install XP Professional, XP Pro Tablet, or XP Pro X64, instead of Windows Vista Business / Ultimate -- as long as they fulfill a bunch of legalistic requirements regarding activation markers, certificates of authenticity, Windows Vista Logo criteria, and other stuff you probably don't care about. It looks like the repudiation of Windows Vista is continuing apace... and we're guessing that it doesn't stop until it results in a series of war crimes tribunals in The Hague. (We can dream, can't we?)

SOE’s film-based MMO to pull the plug on July 31st
After an at times turbulent four years on the market Sony Online Entertainment is to turn off the servers to virtual world The Matrix Online on July 31st.
“Now we’ve seen how far the rabbit hole goes and it’s time to wake up from that dream (or go back to sleep, depending how you look at it),” producer Dan Myers said on The Matrix Online forums.
“On July 31, 2009, we will be jacking out for the last time. It’s a bittersweet moment for everyone involved with the game; as a player or as a developer.
“In May 2004, I embarked upon a journey. It was a brand new world – a vision of online games that didn’t involve elves, spaceships, or dragons. We became part of the Matrix storyline; living our own adventures in the world painted by the movies.
“It has been a good run. Where many games have fizzled out before or shortly after launch, by August we will have lived on in our home at SOE for more than four years. To this day, I have never worked with a community as dedicated as The Matrix Online community.”

A is planning to introduce a subscription model for a new Tiger Woods PGA Tour console title, according to a report via the Wall Street Journal.
Although no official announcement has yet been made, EA is reported to be planning to sell a new title in the series as an online download for consoles. Previously the company has experimented with full game downloads on consoles with Burnout Paradise.
However, instead of charging a one-off fee the game will charge a subscription for continued use and updates. It is implied that the standard retail Tiger Woods series will continue, with the new title appearing to be online only.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, EA CEO John Riccitiello commented: "The console business at best appeals to 100 million people. We want to make games a place to go, rather than a thing to buy."
EA has previous hinted at a two-track plan for its Need for Speed series, with new retail products planned this year but also free-to-play online game Need for Speed World for Asian markets. A fourth, yet to be unveiled title, is also planned for the series by EA Black Box.

PC gaming software revenues rose by 18 per cent to USD 12.7 billion in 2008, according to a new report from the PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA).
The non-profit corporation's 2008 Horizon's Report suggests that the overall market value for PC games and games hardware was USD 68 billion in 2008. This figure is expected to rise to USD 143 billion by 2013.
The total installed userbase of PCs that could be used to play games (including both desktops and notepads) was estimated at 228 million. By 2013 this figure is estimated to rise to 600 million, making the PC by far the most prevalent games format in the world.
"PC gaming extends way beyond a dedicated niche of hardcore PC gamers and high-end PC gaming systems," said Bob O'Donnell, IDC vice president for clients and displays. "In fact, surveys of US consumers show that about 60 per cent of all consumers over 18 play some kind of games and about 59 percent of them prefer PCs as their primary platform."
The report suggests that software growth was driven by online sales, particularly in Asia, with online revenue trends closely following changes in broadband penetration.
"In 2008, China became the leading market for PC games and almost all the revenue in China was from online business models that involved no physical retail component," said DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole. "Going forward, we expect China’s business model will be implemented on a global basis."
The full Horizon's Report is available to all PCGA members, further information can be found at the corporation's official website.

Tiger Woods abandons physical media for its next title, but will it be free-to-play?
EA has announced that its latest Tiger Woods title will be coming exclusively to web browsers.
Tiger Woods Online, currently in production at Florida-based development arm EA Tiburon, will require no disc or game installation. The game will be dynamically streamed to web browsers, with EA emphasising how this will allow it to be “accessible and available anywhere”.
It is said that the game will have a “multi-tiered” subscription model, implying that many of the game’s features will be locked away for premium customers. There was no direct implication that the entry-level subscription would be free-to-play, though it cannot at this stage be ruled out.
Reports have previously emerged suggesting that EA has been considering a free-to-play Tiger Woods game.
Back in February – when EA posted its Q3 results which had “significantly missed its targets” by some $150 million – company CEO John Riccitiello spoke of driving direct digital content to the consumer.
“This is a strategic initiative that is very important for the long-term,” he said at the time.
EA is promising Tiger Woods Online will feature “high resolution 3D graphics”, though it is unclear how the game will look and how well it will run at certain internet speeds.
Naturally for a game that requires an internet connection to play, Tiger Woods Online will introduce a number of community features into the game, such as online tournaments.
"Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online is for anyone who loves golf and is on-the-go," said Executive Producer Mike Taramykin. "Whether you have ten minutes on your PC in the office, or hours on your Mac at home, this is a golf game that makes time for you. With Tiger Woods PGA TOUR Online, golf lovers can satisfy their golf fix anytime."

The announcement wasn't scheduled for a few more days -- four according to the teaser site -- but it looks like Alienware's All Powerful gaming laptop has been set free anyway. So, does it live up to the clues? Pretty much... how does a pair of 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs strike you? No Core i7 listed, instead we're looking at a Core 2 Extreme quad-core CPU at the top end with up to 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, and 1TB of 7200-rpm disk or a 512GB SSD if you prefer. RAID 1 or RAID 0? Sure. Rounding things out is a nine-cell battery of unstated performance, FireWire, 4x USB, eSATA, ExpressCard, 802.11n WiFi, 8-in-1 media card reader, dual-layer Blu-ray, a 1920 x 1200 pixel edge-to-edge LCD, DisplayPort and HDMI-outs all wrapped up in a massive chassis weighing 11.68-pounds with a 15.98 x 12.65 x 2.11-inch footprint. It's also packing a GeForce 9400M G1 GPU with HybridPower technology that allows you to scale the graphics back to conserve battery power. Prices start at $1,799 for a lot less than we mentioned above.
As a footnote to the details above, PCWorld also says that Alienware will use next week's E3 show to update us on its 42.8-inch curved monitor we went hands-on with back in January of 2008.

EA’s yet-to-be released title suffering more than 2008’s most pirated title Spore
The party that’s sure to follow EA’s release of The Sims 3 next week is likely to be a little subdued thanks to the news that the game is being pirated at a faster rate than ‘the most pirated game of 2008’ Spore.
Bloomberg reports that an illegal version of the game which hit the internet earlier this month was downloaded 180,000 times between its appearance on May 18th and May 21st.
To date this represents around $9m in lost sales – that is if you subscribe to the belief that every person who downloaded the game would have otherwise bought it at retail.

We already heard that HDMI 1.4 was just around the bend, and now HDMI Licensing has come forward with all of the official details surrounding the specification. Unfortunately for AV enthusiasts, it seems as if we're taking two steps forward and three back, and we get this sinking feeling that HDMI 1.5 will be here before we know it. At any rate, the main additions to the format are an Ethernet channel, audio return channel, 3D over HDMI, 4K x 2K resolution support, a micro HDMI connector (around half the size of the existing HDMI Mini plug) and an automotive connection system. All fine and good, right? Sure, until you get to the part about having to choose between five different HDMI 1.4 cables, something that the suits at Monster just had to have a hand in.

Natural Selection 2 is a standalone immersive, online FPS that pits aliens against humans in a strategic and action-packed struggle for survival. Two teams of up to 16 players face off with unique abilities in dynamic, evolving environments that change as you play. Watch spreading alien infestation deform hallways, and then use a flamethrower to clear it. Cut the power to disable marine structures or weld a loading door shut for defense. No matter what side you choose, you'll never play the same game twice.
The original Natural Selection was downloaded more than 2 million times and grew to be the most popular independent Half-Life mod. Natural Selection 2 is being created by an independent core team of four people and is scheduled for release on the PC this fall. The hallway and alien footage shown in this movie was filmed entirely in-engine and showcases one of the playable alien classes – the "Onos."

Brand-building drive sees massive investment, new emphasis and new slogan
PC World has launched a major ad campaign, with an emphasis on meeting particular customer needs, instead of the traditional low price point message.
According to Retail Week, the new campaign will run with the strapline: ‘Whatever your world, PC World.’
The two adverts, developed by M&C Saatchi, represent the single biggest marketing investment that PC World has ever made. One aired during last nights Champions League final and another is expected to air on Saturday during the final of Britain’s Got Talent, with cinema ads booked for over 2,500 theatres.
“The new ads put the customers’ needs at the heart of the campaign,” said PC World’s marketing director Niall O’Keefe.
“Our core skill is about getting the right balance between having the technical know-how and being able to listen to our customers and understand their specific needs so we can best advise them on the right solution.”
