Television channel E4 has confirmed that its Grand Master Flash development competition is to return for its second year.
The contest, which challenges both experienced and budding developers to create a game in Flash, offers a the winner a prize of £5000 and a copy of multimedia toolkit Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection.
Jody Smith, editor of E4.com said: “More people are making and playing web games than ever before. On E4 Games, we're lucky to already be working with some of the best game developers the web has to offer, and by holding this competition we're looking to find a whole new batch of genius game creators and celebrate the work they do. The public will decide the overall winner, so we're hoping the entries will entertain our audience too."
“We’re delighted to join E4’s drive to encourage new gaming talent," added Adobe's platform evangelist Andrew Shorten. "With the Flash developer community the most creative out there, skilled in both authoring with Flash CS4, and distribution via the player, Grand Master Flash will provide a great opportunity to show off their work.”
Grand Master Flash is part of the E4 Great British Summer of Games season, which promises to continue to celebrate web-based gaming and talent. As part of E4.com's focus, the site will also showcase fifteen new exclusive Flash games and host its very own awards ceremony titled the E4 Game Awards.

Apple might have bumped the 13-inch unibody MacBook to Pro status at WWDC last week, but it looks like all the shuffling around to reduce costs has had an unfortunate side effect: new MacBook Pros that ship with HDDs only have a 1.5GBps SATA enabled, while SSD configs are apparently getting the full 3.0GBps SATA II experience that used to be standard.
For most people this won't make too much difference since traditional hard drives can't move data that fast, but it's something to keep in mind if you're hoping to buy an HDD unit and swap in a speedier SSD, since your max performance will be bottlenecked. We've verified that our review units with HDDs all have the slower settings, but we've put in a call to Apple to get some more answers on this -- stay tuned.

Blizzard is starting to gear up for the StarCraft II Beta, the company said recently in an email sent out to game writers.
The email, which asks game writers to make sure they have a Battle.Net account set up and a request in, says that Blizzard has no date yet to announce for the start of the beta. The email ends, however, by saying that all Battle.net account login info for game writers needs to be sent to Blizzard by June 19.
Sounds like reason enough for me to start getting excited.

Kheldon points out a lengthy interview at MMO Gamer with developers from BioWare Austin about their upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. They provide details about the game's method of storytelling, and discuss how they divide up the scenes and conversations such that one player may not always see what the player next to him does. Lead writer Daniel Erickson said, "What we wanted to do was be able to separate out people just long enough for the parts that were important for it. If you're going to go have a discussion with your dad Darth Vader, you probably want to go do that by yourself. Or, with your party, you can bring your friends with you. But you probably don't want a thousand people there, especially if a fight's gonna break out, because it wouldn't really make sense." Bioware also recently showed off the Smuggler class, and revealed that the game has hundreds of voice actors performing "hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue."

The case for running Android -- an OS developed for smartphones -- on cheap, ultra-portable laptops has yet to be made. However, that hasn't stopped manufacturers from tinkering with the idea as demonstrated by the broad range of Android "smartbooks" running on ARM-based (be it Snapdragon, Tegra, or Freescale) architectures at Computex. Now Gartner, the guiding force for many corporate CIOs, has issued a research note that puts Atom-based netbooks running Windows 7 on notice while giving credence to the emerging smartbook category of ultra-portables. Analysts Christian Heidarson and Ben Lee said the following in Gartner's Semiconductor DQ Monday Report:
When Android did work, we found that the user interface was very snappy on relatively low-performance ARM processors, more so than Windows 7 on Atom.
Of course, Windows 7 scales much better than Vista and as a full-blown desktop OS gives users a lot of flexibility as long as the netbook's chipset is up to the task. Then again, if you're looking for a purpose-built, fanless 10-inch ultra-portable with integrated WWAN data and FireFox browser that costs less than $200 and plays 25 days of music or 10-hours of 1080p video off a single charge, well then a smartbook might be the device for you. We'll see which carrier is brave enough to sell 'em come October.

NPD released its PC sales report for May on Thursday, and World of Warcraft was still safely ensconced as the top seller for the computer market. WoW actually took the top two slots, as the combination of the Wrath of the Lich King Expansion pack and the WoW Battle Chest dominated. WoW also came in on the chart at ninth place, proving that Blizzard's MMO still dominates sales month after month. Empire: Total War, Sega's real-time strategy title that was released in March, is still doing well enough to be third on the list. Electronic Arts rounded out the top five, as The Sims 2 Double Deluxe and Spore came in fourth and fifth, respectively. With this being the May report, this leaves out the recent release of The Sims 3, which came out last week.
Apart from these titles, Bethesda found Fallout 3 safely in sixth place for May, while THQ's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II was closely behind in seventh place. Despite many technical issues with the title's online elements, Stardock's Demigod managed to rally enough sales to come in at eighth. Finally, Valve rounded out the top ten with Left 4 Dead, proving that you can't keep a good zombie game down.
The May 2009 NPD Top Ten:
1. World Of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
2. World Of Warcraft: Battle Chest
3. Empire: Total War
4. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
5. Spore
6. Fallout 3
7. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II
8. DemiGod
9. World Of Warcraft
10. Left 4 Dead

Gaming blog Destructoid received what is believed to be marketing survey hinting at Activision's possible upcoming online plans for the Call of Duty series.
The survey focuses mainly on the online space; specifically a new service where players would pay a monthly fee (much like a MMO game) that will "enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements."
Other features mentioned are access to early betas and expansions, character skins, enhanced stat-tracking, game modes, and "support for competitive play."
Keep in mind none of this information is even remotely official and may in fact never come to fruition, so don't get angry just yet.

Team up and defeat the forces of evil! The Kivi's Underworld Multiplayer Expansion lets gamers share adventures with friends and other players on a LAN or the internet.
Kivi's Underworld is a casual, hack and slash game. Explore the mysterious underworld as a mighty Warrior battling opponents toe to toe, rain down fire on your enemies with the dangerous Fire Mage, sneak disguised with stealth to confound your foes as a Scout, unleash the fury of the Berserker, or adventure with any of the other numerous playable characters.
It all starts after a mining expedition, led by Kivi (a young lumen warrior), ventured into unknown territory, and opened a pathway to a deadly race. Dark elves decimated them. Kivi is the lone survivor, yet no one believes him about the new threat, since dark elves are just a myth. Kivi was there; he saw. The dark elves are real and his people are in great danger. Reluctantly, Kivi realizes that it is up to him.
Playing as Kivi or any of his companions, you leave the safety of the protected, underground cities to rebuild the lost city of Defiance, recruit more lumen to your cause, and defeat this growing dark elf threat, before they destroy your homeland and all of your kind. The fate of the lumen is in your hands. Can you save the lumen people?
Although very easy to learn, mastering Kivi's Underworld is a different matter. With a fast pace, over twenty playable characters, tons of powerups, many monsters using unique tactics and skills, numerous deadly traps, and multiple difficulty levels, even an expert player will be challenged.

The Neo Steam tanks are overflowing, the gears have been oiled up, and the master switch has been flipped! Players can now jump on a zeppelin and explore the vibrant towns and cavernous dungeons of the commercially launched Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent, a fantasy-steampunk massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). This game marks the first full-length title to join Atlus Online's portal, a daily destination for community-focused gaming and interactive entertainment.
"The moment is finally here for us to open up the doors of Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent and invite players to take part in an experience that we are exceedingly proud of," says Jun Hyun Kim, Head of Game Operations, Atlus U.S.A., Inc. "Over the past months, our community has continued to grow and share with us to build one of the most cohesive and collaborative portals I've seen. And now, we are so thrilled to provide them with a final version of the game, which they were so inspirational and instrumental in helping to make possible."
With the commercial rollout of Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent, several previously locked features have now been activated. Most importantly is the premium item shop, which houses untold numbers of vanity items and character enhancers. And now that Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent is live, Atlus Online will periodically provide fresh updates and run quirky promotions to further players' fantastical journeys long after the game's launch.
Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent, Atlus Online's first MMORPG, transports players to a world where two nations battle over a precious resource called Neo Steam. From the onset, customization is key to each player's experience, where they can choose which nation to join and select from a number of specialized classes. As players battle to expand their nation's resources and protect their borders from invasion, they must learn to harness steam technology to upgrade their equipment, learn new abilities, and progress in their chosen class. Adding to the immersive aspect of the fantasy-steampunk world, the game also features various forms of steam-based machines and vehicles for faster in-game traveling.
Gamers, Atlus Online fans, and those excited to experience the world of Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent can visit http://www.neosteam.atlusonline.com for more information.

In a release that sounds more suited to a rock and roll band than a video game company, BioWare announced today that it's going to take Dragon Age: Origins on tour. The game, which BioWare CEO and co-founder Ray Muzyka calls, "the biggest, most ambitious BioWare game to date," will be appearing at five separate shows this summer.
The summer tour kicks off at the San Diego Comic Con on July 22 and then moves on to Indiana's GenCon on August 13. From there the team takes the game across the Atlantic for GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, starting Aug 19, and then flies home to Canada for Fan Expo Canada in Toronto beginning August 28. To wrap things up before the game's fall release, the developers will show the game at Seattle's PAX starting September 4.
That's a lot of traveling for one game, so fans will definitely want to break out their frequent flier miles if they want to catch all the showings. Or if that's not possible, just keep checking in with IGN as we cover the game's journey.

June 12th, 2009, 17:29 Posted By: wraggster
Blizzard has revealed on the official World of Warcraft forums that it's dramatically decreasing the cost and increasing the accessibility of the mounts that allow players to get around the game world faster.
Regular mounts will now be available at level 20 instead of 30 (it was originally 40), "epic" fast mounts will be available at level 40 instead of 60, and flying mounts will be available at level 60 instead of 70 and have their speed increased.
The gold costs of the riding skills and the mounts themselves have been slashed, with apprentice riding at level 20 costing just 4 gold, and a basic mount costing 1 gold (the original cost for both was 100g back in the day).
Mounts will take half as long (just 1.5 seconds) to summon, while class-based travel skills - such as the Hunter's "aspect of the cheetah" that increases run speed - will be available at level 16.
Blizzard poster Zarhym explained that the changes would help make the game more accessible and shorten its intimidating length without affecting difficulty too much.
"The game has gotten quite a bit longer, and allowing players to get from A to B faster only very minimally decreases difficulty; more so, it decreases time spent travelling," he said.
"We don't want to discourage players from trying out the game if they have not yet, and we especially don't want to discourage existing players from trying out new characters because the levelling process from 1-80 seems too daunting after flying around Northrend grabbing purples for a while."
The changes will be applied in the next major content patch alongside a new battleground and the Crusader Coliseum mini-raid challenges.

Rumors are circulating regarding a possible December release for a PC version of Gears of War 2, but the site the rumors reference might have its compass pointed in the wrong direction.
IGN points to a site called Beantown Games, explaining that "there were plenty of details that appeared to be pulled from an upcoming press release", along with a box shot and details on a limited edition of the game, complete with gold lancer. There are indeed plenty of details, but taking any block of text from said details and putting them into Google search reveals that they are the exact same details from the Xbox 360 press release, word for word, except for a few spots where they replaced "Xbox Live" with "Games for Windows Live". Whoever changed the text even missed some, as shown in the line "Taking full advantage of the Xbox LIVE service, which boasts 10 million gamers".
And then there's the fact that the retail codes are all for The Golden Compass.
Yes, the UPC code, MPN number, and ASIN identifier all point to Sega's PC version of The Golden Compass, based on the theatrical version of the book, which did indeed feature a war, but instead of gears, we have bears. Bears of war.
Finally, the box art itself is the exact same artwork released early on for the Xbox 360 version, complete with "ARTWORK NOT FINAL" on the bottom. The image doesn't jive with the standard dimensions for PC box art either, leading me to believe that it is a Photoshop job.
We've contacted Microsoft, Epic, and Beantown Games for comment on the listing, but have yet to hear back from any of the three. Microsoft has already commented to IGN that there are still no plans to bring the game to the PC, and we know how Cliff feels about a PC version already.

The new 3D ‘performance-capture’ animation studio to share services with TV specialist Hullabaloo
New 3D performance capture venture Cubic Motion has opened a new facility in Manchester co-located with TV sound and picture studio Hullabaloo.
Cubic Motion – founded by three former executives from the 3D facial animation specialist Image Metrics – announced its arrival back in May.
Looking ahead, co-founder Mike Jones sees much benefit in integrating with a TV production studio.
“Being on site with Hullabaloo allows us to seamlessly combine performance capture services with the outstanding audio facilities and experience of Hullabaloo, giving clients the option of integrated capture under one roof and at the same time."
"From a customer perspective, being able to outsource to a facility capable of dealing with all aspects of a production is a big win.”
Hullabaloo – the studio behind sound and pictures for many successful children's TV shows – returned the compliment, with Managing Director Darren Cox explaining:
“We are very pleased to welcome Cubic Motion to the studio; their unique services add an important new capability, offering clients involved in performance capture the chance to simplify their productions by reducing the number of external partners they have to co-ordinate”.

Microsoft strips Internet Explorer from European version of forthcoming operating system
Computing giant Microsoft has removed web browser Internet Explorer from a European version of forthcoming operating system Windows 7.
The move is in response to anti-trust allegations from the European Union, which claims Microsoft would be unfairly pushing out the competition by bundling its own web browser with the OS.
The firm has publicly confirmed that it would ship a version without IE pre-loaded, after CNET published a 'confidential memo' stating as much:
"To ensure that Microsoft is in compliance with European law, Microsoft will be releasing a separate version of Windows 7 for distribution in Europe that will not include Windows Internet Explorer. Microsoft will offer IE8 separately and free of charge and will make it easy and convenient for PC manufacturers to preinstall IE 8 on Windows 7 machines in Europe if they so choose. PC manufacturers may choose to install an alternative browser instead of IE 8, and has always been the case, they may install multiple browsers if they wish."
Microsoft has been in more or less constant trouble with the EU courts in recent years, over various cases relating to fair trading practises and allegedly anti-competitive behaviour.

Gamers can now step into the delightfully despotic shoes of the new Overlord and take full control of a horde of vicious, mischievous, but ultimately lovable Minions, as Codemasters today announced that the Overlord II playable demo is now available on the PlayStation Store and PC.
The accompanying Overlord II gameplay video explains how the new Overlord grows up in his dark Netherworld domain with the help of Minion Keeper Gnarl and his slavish and loyal Minion subjects. Raised by Gnarl and the Minions, the "Overlad" grows into the mighty Overlord as the Glorious Empire cements its hold on the world above. Players will get to witness the might of the Glorious Empire and get a glimpse of all-new enemies like the magic-detecting Sentinels and the huge, magic-eating Eradicators.
In the Overlord II demo, players step into the big spiky boots of a new Overlord whose sights are firmly set on becoming the king of chaos, the bringer of evil and the master of Minions. As the demo opens the Overlord, aided and abetted by a team of brown fighter Minions, emerges from his underground lair into the ice caves only to discover a Yeti frozen in a block of ice. The Minions can, in their inimitably violent way, 'defrost' him and then give chase as he knuckles out into the snowy wastes of the Hunting Grounds, near the town of Nordberg.
Then it's time to put the Minions to work, harvesting valuable life-force from the indigenous fauna. Minions will happily lock onto anything in the vicinity – including fluffy seal pups ('Well,' argue the Minions, 'the smelly fur balls are eating all the lovely fishies'). There are also Nordburgian Hunters and hippy, peace-loving elves to contend with but, as ever, the Minions aren't fussy who they attack for their master.
To speed their progress, Minions can befriend a pack of wolves and ride them through the snowy landscape like a Minion Cavalry. The wolf-mounted Minion is an altogether tougher force, more deadly and more agile – wolves have their own attack moves and will knock enemies off their feet through sheer force, biting and goring opponents into submission.
Discover why being evil has never been so much fun with the Overlord II playable demo, now available from the PlayStation Store and PC. To download the PC demo and see the new Overlord II gameplay video, command your Minions to go to http://www.overlordgame.com/us/try.

June 11th, 2009, 20:53 Posted By: wraggster
Matrix Games and Western Civilization Software are thrilled to announce the release of the first update for their hit Napoleonic strategic/tactical blend, Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition. The comprehensive 1.0.9 update comes with heaps of improvements and bug fixes in addition to two key new pieces of documentation: The Advanced Economy: Help and Advice for the New Player, and the Modder's Guide.
As for the hefty list of bug fixes, the most notable item resolved is the mouse lag experienced by some in certain parts of the interface. In addition, the update includes improvements to the AI for both the strategic and tactical portions of the game, several significant improvements to the overall interface, and two dozen "fine tune" rule changes to enhance historical accuracy.
David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said "Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition is an absolutely must-have for any fans of the Napoleonic genre. The first Crown of Glory made a mark when it was released, but Emperor's Edition takes us to a whole new level of Napoleonic strategy! If you tried the original Crown of Glory, there is still an upgrade discount available for the Emperor's Edition. If you haven't tried it, the stand-alone Emperor's Edition is an excellent time to get on board and see if your inner Napoleon is up to the challenge."
Two centuries ago, Europe was in the midst of one of the most gripping periods in human history. It was an era that saw cobblers become princes and emperors become exiles, an age of legendary diplomats and brilliant tacticians. Listen to the roll of the drum, the call of the bugle, and see the banners unfurled above the divisions and corps. Wide-eyed recruits march next to battle-scarred veterans, sabers clatter alongside the bags of grapeshot, the wheels of hundreds of caissons rattle, as generals plan and diplomats plot, and all of Europe grasps with desperate hands for… The Crown Of Glory.
This new Emperor's Edition is a stand-alone sequel to the acclaimed Crown of Glory and improves on the original in every area, immersing the player in the epic events of the Napoleonic era. A beautiful strategic map with more than 200 provinces covers all of Europe and North Africa, with scenarios and campaigns from 1792 up to 1820. Stronger AI, a streamlined interface and a new simplified economic model to allow players to focus on the aspects of the game they most enjoy. Players take the role of one of the crowned potentates of any of the eight Major powers as well as having the option to play as a minor power such as Poland, Denmark or Portugal.
A turn-based structure allows you to play at your own pace, deciding on the military, diplomatic, economic and social paths of your nation, including treaties, trade routes and levying and supplying military units. While your armies march across a worldwide map with monthly turns, detailed land and naval battles allow you to play at a smaller scale, where your brigades, divisions and ships can be commanded with historical tactics. All battles can be resolved quickly or fought out on a detailed battlefield map.
The eight major powers (France, Britain, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Turkey, Spain, and Sweden) and over ninety computer-controlled minor nations are modeled in rich historical detail. Every effort has been made to bring you as thorough a simulation of the Napoleonic Era as is possible, from the dockyards of Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.
Historical leaders, special abilities, fleets, upgrades, reinforcements, colonialism, guard units and over 100 historical events, give Crown Of Glory: Emperor's Edition a unique and engrossing style. Combining Strategy and Tactics in one design, Crown Of Glory: Emperor's Edition offers you an opportunity to test your strength in an age of legends.
The update is comprehensive and will bring of all previous versions of Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition up to v1.0.9. Get more information on Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition from its official product page.
