On Saturday, June 27th, children's TV station Nickelodeon broadcast its Addicting Games Showdown awards ceremony, which recognised the best output of the casual games industry.
Snubbyland and Armor Games' Worlds Hardest Game took the overall prize, titled the Most AddictingGame gong.
The awards, which were broadcast interstitially between shows on Nickelodeon, were divided into categories, each with irreverent titles that parodied many of the conventions of casual gaming.
Best Performance by a Monkey went to Ninja Kiwi's Bloons and Most Courageous Stick Figure Stunt was given to DX Interactive's Electric Man 2, while Afro-Ninja Productions took the Greatest Escape Game accolade with Escape the Car. Tattoo Artist by Gamepill received the Best Game from Planet Random award, and Let's Get Cookin' by the The Article 19 Group won in the Your Mom's Favourite Game category.
Other games that went home having beaten off competition in various categories included Alejandro Guillen's Magic Pen, JackSmack's Build a Robot 3, Shockwave's Redline Rumble and Odd1's Baseball Juiced.
"Congratulations to the winning games and the developers who created them. We applaud the innovation and creativity of everyone involved in creating such phenomenal online games," said Dave Williams, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Nickelodeon Kids and Family Games Group. "The AddictingGames Showdown' was born from our knowledge that our audiences are experiencing their entertainment on multiple platforms, so we combined their biggest online activity-gaming-with TV."

Often companies will claim a "sellout" in order to hype incredible demand for its product. However, these claims are pointless without any firm numbers -- after all, there's a big difference between moving 100 and 100,000 units. Now we're getting word from Japan that the heavily discounted Windows 7 upgrades that went up for pre-order on Friday are sold-out. While no numbers are given, the 17 retailers involved in the pre-order sales, who presumably have no vested interest in trying to inflate perceptions on behalf of Microsoft, report sales as "considerable" and taking only 1.5 days (of the 10 days planned) to burn though the alloted inventory. A quick check on Amazon US and Canada shows the same pre-order prices we saw Friday. Still, it might be wise to take notice of the "while supplies last" disclaimer if you haven't already.
Update: Engadget Japanese tells us that the 30,000 copies were sold according to Microsoft.

European customers will pay up to twice as much for Windows 7 compared with US users, even though the new operating system will ship without a browser in Europe. Some of the money Microsoft stands to make on the European editions of Windows 7 comes from the weak dollar. Last week, for instance, the dollar fell against the euro the most in a month, hitting $1.41 per euro. For example, Windows 7 Professional, the key retail edition for businesses, will sport a price tag of 285 euros, or $400.60, and £189.99, or $313.84, at Saturday's exchange rate. In other words, EU customers will pay twice the $199.99 U.S. price; U.K. buyers will pay 57% more. And depending on your view on bundling IE, Europe's customers will be paying more for less, with Microsoft's decision to yank IE8 from Windows 7 in an effort to head off EU antitrust regulators, who may still force the company to take more drastic measures

Late last year we discussed news that the Entertainment Merchants Association was pondering a plan to develop technology that requires games and movies to be "activated" when they are sold at retail outlets, primarily to reduce theft and piracy. Now, the EMA claims a study they commissioned has indicated that employing such a system for video games, DVDs, and Blu-ray products would generate an additional $6 billion in revenues each year. Critics of the idea are skeptical about the numbers, pointing out that the majority of game piracy comes from downloading PC games, which this plan won't even affect. There are other problems as well: "In order for benefit denial to work, the EMA would presumably require the three major consoles to have some sort of activation verification function to ensure that games were legally purchased. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft agree to that. There is also a lucrative market for used video games to consider. After some gamers complete a title, they sell it back to the retailer. How will benefit denial handle that situation?"

Rock, Paper, Shotgun is running an opinion piece which asks why the majority of MMOs force users to spend a fair portion of their time traveling around a virtual world. At what point does moving from one location to another become a chore? From the article:
"I love big, explorable worlds. They're by far one of my most favourite things about games. Running off in a direction without any idea what I might encounter is a rare pleasure, and one far more likely to result in an exciting discovery in a game's world than the real one. ... Not knowing what's coming up is huge and exciting, and I'd not want to take it away from gaming, not ever. But you know what? Once I've been there, that moment's gone. I've discovered it already. I did the exploring. I don't need to spend half an hour of my time that I've allocated for playing games trudging at whatever stupidly slow speed a game's decided to impose upon me. There is no good reason, whatsoever, to not just let me be there."

So Microsoft France's product manager for Windows Mobile, Audrey Zolghadr, is saying that the company's upcoming Windows Marketplace launch will be accompanied by around 600 apps certified and available on day one. Depending on your perspective, that's either ridiculously anemic -- the iPhone's App Store has a couple orders of magnitude more currently available, for example -- or a veritable cornucopia. Though the Ovi Store has no shortage of "items" to buy, an overwhelming majority of those are currently wallpapers, ringtones, and the like, and Palm's App Catalog launched with so few apps that many folks (we're not naming names) literally had every app installed within a few minutes of buying the phone. At the end of the day, it's all about signal-to-noise ratio; if Microsoft can deliver 600 apps and half of those are terrific, they're on the right track -- though at this point, we're thinking the next battle in Smartphone Platform Wars doesn't really kick off until WinMo 7 swings by anyway.

June 27th, 2009, 19:41 Posted By: wraggster
It's been a big week for videogame company mergers. Right alongside the news that Bethesda parent company ZeniMax acquired longtime independent studio id Software came word that BioWare and Mythic had joined forces under the umbrella of publishing giant Electronic Arts. As the news broke we also learned Mark Jacobs, longtime studio head at Mythic, the folks responsible for the massively multiplayer online games Dark Age of Camelot and the more recent Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, was leaving, to be replaced by Rob Denton, who along with Jacobs co-founded the company. Overseeing and managing the new RPG / MMO entity is BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka, who we recently got a chance to talk to about his new role and what it could mean for the numerous studios now in his charge.
"Really what's occurred is a new group is being formed within the EA Games label, and I'm leading that group as its General Manager," said Muzyka. "Mythic and BioWare are now reporting into me and really both remain intact. Both retain their unique brands, their cultural identities, all the cool stuff they're working on. We have great teams in all the locations, so within the group I have four locations now: BioWare Edmonton, BioWare Austin, BioWare Montreal, and Mythic, which is based in Virginia. I was just in Virginia earlier in the week and there's some really great people there, fantastic teams to work with, so I'm really excited about it."
Muzyka doesn't foresee any major changes in how the companies will be run, but is planning on encouraging more cross-studio communication. "My goal is to try and ensure there's more collaboration and communication. We've already been back and forth between BioWare and Mythic a bunch of times, so we're just going to try and accelerate both teams to try and do even more cool stuff…Now we have more people that are not only part of the same company but we're partners with. They'll actually know who each other are."
What about the possibility of a full-on collaboration and the potential emergence of a Bioware-Mythic project? "Anything's possible," said Muzyka. "We can't say it wouldn't happen. There's no active plans, currently to do that, but the teams at Mythic and BioWare I know from talking to all of them, they're really excited about working together, so I think that fuels a lot of cool things. People start talking about 'Hey, wouldn't it be neat if we did this, or did this together?' That kind of thing might evolve over time. For right now they retain the unique identity at Mythic and the Austin team [Star Wars: The Old Republic] retains its unique identity, and they're working on the same projects they were working on before. For right now it's more of a collaborative opportunity to get people to work together at a group level."
Sounds like things will proceed as normal for now, though the possibility of a joint venture in the future is certainly interesting. Muzyka was confident in the current leadership of each studio, and we're looking forward to whatever develops.

European game service Metaboli -- partner to GameTap -- has announced its plans to launch the Chill-Out Pack, a service dedicated to downloadable, family-friendly casual games. The service is set to include over 200 casual games, including recognizable movie licenses like The Chronicles of Narnia and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, according to Casualgaming.biz. The service will update with new titles every week as well.
The Chill-Out Pack also offers new parental controls, including the ability to create sub-accounts for children, which allow parents to set parameters for their little ones, such as limiting playtime and deciding which games the kids can play.
Honestly, we thought it sounded like a great idea, until we discovered that the pack offers Peggle. As a warning to unsuspecting parents: Know that Peggle has the ability to tear your family apart. Seriously, you might want to hide it from the kids.

Microsoft will instead offer customers full version of Home Premium at a discounted price
Microsoft has revealed that it will not be offering European consumers an upgrade version of Windows 7 when the operating system is released in October.
Instead, the vendor will offer the full version of Windows 7 Home Premium at the discounted price of £79.99, reports the BBC. The plans were revealed as Microsoft detailed the pricing of the next generation operating system.
Blaming the recent ruling by the European Commission for the move, Microsoft said that it would not be offering consumers in the EU the upgrade version. However, upgrade versions will be available outside of Europe.
From today (June 26th) Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 for any customer purchasing a computer. However, the company has warned that vendors may still decide to charge their customers for shipping of the discs with Windows 7 on them.
Microsoft has said that it will continue to offer the full version of Windows 7 to European customers at the discounted price until December 31st, 2009. After that date, it will increase to £149.99.

EA Digital Illusions CE has quietly opened up the beta of Battlefield Heroes, their long-delayed, free-to-play shooter. After gradually scaling up the number of players in the closed beta, they've now made the game available to everyone and lifted the NDA. EA has not yet mentioned this in an official announcement, probably hoping to keep their servers from being overwhelmed. The game's website is now accepting signups. IGN ran a hands-on preview of Battlefield Heroes back in April.

As you know, Windows 7 pre-orders begin today (unless you're lucky enough to be in Europe, that is). This of course begs the question: what is a Win7-aspiring netbook owner to do? External optical drives are pretty kludgey, in our estimation, and trip to the Geek Squad? Out of the question. According to CNET, a "source" of some sort is goin' around saying that Microsoft is planning on making the OS available on USB thumb drives for the ultra-portable market, although we feel that such devices are best left to the college students who rely on campus computer labs -- or the occasional J.Lo album. As for Microsoft, they've said nothing about any of this, although we have noticed that its online store has all three upgrades (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) available for pre-order download (at $49.99, $99.99, and $219.99 respectively). Problem solved, right?

Earlier this year developer FrozenByte announced it was prepping a cooperative platformer called Trine for PlayStation Network and PC. During E3 publisher Atlus revealed it planned to deliver the game to Xbox Live Arcade. And today publisher SouthPeak announced it will handle the PC version.
"The PC platform gives as many players as possible the chance to join forces and find creative methods for completing game objectives," said Richard Iggo, VP of Marketing at SouthPeak Interactive. "It's up to them to determine how their quests will progress and how they'll ultimately achieve victory."
Trine is a fantasy action game that plays with physics and features three playable characters – which means it's meant to be played by three people at once (although one can play and switch between characters at will). It is unclear at this time whether or not we'll be able to play co-op online. From what we've seen of the game so far it looks pretty cool.

Aspyr Media has partnered with the leading Eastern and Central European publisher 1C Company to publish Men of War: Red Tide in North America. The stand-alone expansion to the critical hit RTS Men of War, Men of War: Red Tide introduces a new story driven campaign based on the writings of Soviet scribe Alexander Zorich and dozens of new or upgraded units and weapons. Men of War: Red Tide will not require the original Men of War to play.
Men of War: Red Tide is a stunning mixture of RTS and a third-person action that introduces a new fighting force known for its brutal efficiency during the height of World War II. Played out across more than 20 missions, Men of War: Red Tide has players take command of the feared "Black Coats," the nickname given to Soviet Marines, an elite combat group specializing in engagements near the shoreline. The player has direct control of new game units including the Black Coats, new tanks, self-propelled guns, armored trains, landing craft, artillery and new enemy emplaced weapons to capture and use. New air support options include new fighters, bombers, hydroplanes; cruisers, destroyers and gun boats which provide naval fire support.
Fighting during the Black Sea Campaigns of WWII, history buffs and WWII aficionados will recognize theaters of battle such as Odessa, Sevastopol, Theodosia, Eltingen, Nikolaev and Constanta.
Men of War: Red Tide will be available at North American retail outlets and for digital download this fall.

President of Gearbox Software, Randy Pitchford, confirmed to IGN this morning that the 'War Hero' trademarks filed yesterday are indeed being worked on, but the team has yet to find a publishing partner. Here is Pitchford's statement:
Yesterday, someone clever noticed that Gearbox Software had registered some new trademarks and I promised I would comment about that today.
The news of the Gearbox Software "War Hero" related trademarks exposes a bit about our interests in the development of another original intellectual property.
As people following gaming news know, Gearbox is really motivated right now to take some bold risks and do exciting new things that no one has ever seen before, such as Borderlands.
War Hero is something down the road for us – it's not signed with a publishing partner yet as we haven't even talked to any potential partners about it. So we're certainly not ready to talk about it publicly at the moment.
