Microsoft has warned of a 'privately reported' vulnerability affecting IE users on XP or Windows Server 2003. The vulnerability allows remote users to execute arbitrary code with the same privileges as the users. The vulnerability is triggered when users visit a web site with malicious code. 'Security experts say criminals have been attacking the vulnerability for nearly a week. Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software that exploits the vulnerability.' The advisory can be found at TechNet. Until Microsoft develops a patch, a workaround is available.

D1gital_Prob3 writes with this excerpt from a story about David Myers, a Loyola professor who spent some time studying superhero MMO City of Heroes/Villains:
"... he aimed the pointer at his opponent, the virtual comic book villain 'Syphris.' Myers, 55, flicked the buttons on his mouse and magically transported his opponent to the front of a cartoon robot execution squad. In an instant, the squad pulverized the player. Syphris fired an instant message at Myers moments later. 'If you kill me one more time I will come and kill you for real and I am not kidding.' ... As part of his experiment, Myers decided to play the game by the designers' rules — disregarding any customs set by the players. His character soon became very unpopular. At first, players tried to beat him in the game to make him quit. Myers was too skilled to be run off, however. They then made him an outcast, a World Wide Web pariah that the creator of Syphris — along with hundreds of other faceless gamers — detested."

NCsoft is pleased to reveal an all-new selection of screenshots for Aion, the biggest MMO release of 2009! In Aion, players take to the skies as powerful winged beings to battle for the fate of Atreia, a planet shattered by civil war. These screenshots reveal the two class specializations, Templar and Gladiator, which players can choose to pursue in Aion when they select to play as the strong and weapons-proficient Warrior.
The Templar
Templars are brave souls who must hold the frontline, using their shields to block and parry attacks while waiting for a weakness to show itself before retaliating. Templars become more powerful when struck; they can only reveal their full potential when they are in the midst of combat.
The Gladiator
Gladiators are the true melee masters of Atreia; vicious and beastly - constantly training to perfect the various fighting styles their class excels in. Much like the Warrior class that they emerged from, a Gladiator's power comes from sheer, brutal strength - to see one of these behemoths in combat is a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Following the just-announced download deal between LucasArts and Steam - which left out some classic titles people on our forums were gagging for - the company has explained that this is just the beginning of the deal. All's not lost people.
The company's Twitterer added after the announcement was made public, "And this is just the beginning. We know how much you guys love our old games. This little announcement is just a start."
So the likes of Tie Fighter, Day Of The Tentacle and Grim Fandango could still be coming. Just not in the next few weeks.
Can we breathe a sigh of relief yet?
Can we?
Well can we, LucasArts?

Extra time needed to DirectX 11 integration; Console versions still due this September
Publisher Codemasters has confirmed that the PC version of upcoming racer Colin McRae: Dirt 2 has been delayed from its initial September release date until some time in December – though the reward will be the integration of DirectX 11.
DirectX 11, the latest iteration of Microsoft’s PC gaming SDK, is due to arrive alongside Windows 7 in September. It will come bundled with the new OS and will be available as a downloadable upgrade to users of Windows Vista.
Dirt 2 will also support Microsoft’s Games for Windows: Live multiplayer network.
“While the console editions of Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will retain their September ship date, we believe that the DirectX 11 feature set is too compelling to ignore, especially considering how much more it can add to the visual experience for PC gamers,” Codemasters’ chief technical officer Bryan Marshall stated.
“As a leader in digital racing entertainment, we are staying ahead of the pack by immediately taking advantage of key new technologies such as hardware tessellation, multi-threading and Shader Model 5.0 to deliver the most realistic, immersive and exhilarating racing experiences in the business.
"The fusion of DirectX 11 with Codemasters’ EGO Engine will raise the technical bar considerably in the racing genre.”
The Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS and PSP versions of Colin McRae: Dirt 2 will all be released in September.

Study by German mobile social network says 48 per cent of members occasionally pay for stuff.
Itsmy, run by Gofresh, asked 1,500 users in Europe and North America about their mobile social gaming habits, and found 12 per cent are regular spenders while 40 per cent never pay.
The study would indicate the validity of the prevailing model for social gaming, which is to give it away free and monetise with micro-billing later.
Jukka Saarelainen, CTO of itsmy, believes the games don't need to be high profile. He said: “Only 11 per cent of participants are looking for a well-known brand or title.
Over 60 per cent play games that sound interesting because of their style or story. And this is where our creative in-house mobile browser game studio is prepared to accept the challenge."
The firm opened its gaming unit in January. It has ten original games in the pipeline.

Leading games publisher refutes claims that software downloads affect High Street figures
Valve has dismissed worries that digital distribution erodes retail sales of software, adding that promotions via its own online service Steam actually boost bricks and mortar demand.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, the game publisher's vice president of marketing Doug Lombardi claimed that recent online promotions with its successful franchise Left4Dead had seen a boost in retail sales.
"A lot of the 'Steam is there to compete with retail' stuff is sort of sensationalised," he told the website.
"When we do our free weekends on Steam for our products we see an increase in player numbers, obviously, and then we'll see a spike in sales at the end of the weekend on Steam and at retail.
"Recently we've seen data that shows Left 4 Dead free weekends increase the sales of Left 4 Dead on Steam, at retail and on the Xbox 360, which we would never have guessed could have happened, but it's just that word of mouth."

ArenaLive is a new open source game based on the well-known OpenArena. Its aim is to become an open-source alternative to id Software's QuakeLive. The main idea is to make a game available in your web browser. So far, the game is playable and provides player stats, straight-forward settings for your account in a web browser and, of course, loads of fun with your friends. At the moment, it is available only for 32/64bit Mozilla Firefox on GNU/Linux, however, support for other platforms and browsers is coming soon. The game is licensed under GNU/GPL2. It's still in an early development stage, so players and developers both are welcome to join.

Get out your Bill Gates commemorative calendars folks, 'cause it looks like we now have a few more dates to mark off on the road to Windows 7 availability. While Microsoft still isn't saying anything official itself just yet, a number of different sources are reporting that the company has set July 10th as the date for the final gold build of Windows 7, while the big release to manufacturing date is apparently on track for July 13th. Of course, things could still change if there's a major bug or other problem encountered, but barring any disasters, that'll likely be the same build that finds its way onto your PC this fall.

Valve has batted away the latest fears that its digital Steam service is damaging traditional retail, revealing it has data that shows boxed sales increase when it runs promotions via its digital distribution channel.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in London yesterday, marketing boss Doug Lombardi claimed 'free weekend' initiatives boosted sales of its games across the board.
"When we do our free weekends on Steam for our products we see an increase in player numbers, obviously, and then we'll see a spike in sales at the end of the weekend on Steam and at retail," he said. "And recently we've seen data that shows Left 4 Dead free weekends increase the sales of Left 4 Dead on Steam, at retail and on the Xbox 360, which we would never have guessed could have happened, but it's just that word of mouth."
Lombardi also hit back at industry rumours suggesting leading US retailers including GameStop were increasingly reluctant to give over shelf space to Valve products in-store, due to the impact Steam is having on bricks-and-mortar businesses.
"A lot of the 'Steam is there to compete with retail' stuff is sort of sensationalised," he argued. "We spent more money at GameStop in the US promoting Left For Dead than we did at any other chain. We sold more copies of Left 4 Dead at Gamestop than we did at any other chain.
"We're supporting them with dollars for promotions and they're supporting us by delivering top performance in terms of sell-through at their outlet with Left 4 Dead. My hope is that we can replicate that success with Left 4 Dead 2.
"[Steam is] about making the games better. It's currently a great marketing and promotions channel, and yeah we sell games over it and that's great, but whether people buy games at GameStop, or GAME UK, or on Steam, we get paid. So for us, whichever cash register you want to pay at, that's fine."
Lombardi added that pre-orders for Left 4 Dead 2, the co-op shooter sequel, were already double that of the original for a similar time frame. This in spite of a widely-publicised internet campaign led by disgruntled owners of the first game, objecting to Valve releasing content as a standalone sequel rather than as DLC.
Left 4 Dead 2 is due for release on PC and Xbox 360 in November.

As the latest in his Game Design Essentials series for Gamasutra, writer John Harris examines 10 games from the Western computer RPG (CRPG) tradition and 10 from the Japanese console RPG (JRPG) tradition, to figure out what exactly makes them tick. From the entry on Nethack: 'Gaining experience is supposed to carry the risk of harm and failure. Without that risk, gaining power becomes a foregone conclusion. It has reached the point where the mere act of spending time playing [most RPGs] appears to give players the right to have their characters become more powerful. The obstacles that provide experience become simply an arbitrary wall to scale before more power is granted; this, in a nutshell, is the type of play that has brought us grind, where the journey is simple and boring and the destination is something to be raced to. Nethack and many other roguelikes do feature experience gain, but it doesn't feel like grind. It doesn't because much of the time the player is gaining experience, he is in danger of sudden, catastrophic failure. When you're frequently a heartbeat away from death, it's difficult to become bored.' Harris' Game Design series has previously spanned subjects from mysterious games to open world games, unusual control schemes and difficult games."

Social networking tool increases its gaming footprint with two major new backers
Revolutionary social networking tool Twitter is to get in-game support in two of MMO’s biggest names – Activision Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and Cryptic’s upcoming Champions Online.
Offworld reports that new add-on TweetCraft will allow WoW players to send and receive Tweets in-game and upload screenshots using Twitpic. It will also allow gamers to auto-Tweet when they log in to the game.
Developer Cryptic has also confirmed Twitter support in its upcoming title, with a statement on the official blog explaining:
“We’re really excited to get in-game tweet testing out to our beta players. This feature is in initial testing stages and will most likely have issues. Beta players, please keep in mind that you are still under an NDA while testing this feature.”
Twitter took pride of place centre stage at last month’s E3, where Microsoft announced that a client for the service will be heading to Xbox 360 later this year.
Twitter also played a significant role in the E3 hype machine, with many companies using the social network to spread early word of their big news.
