Alawar Entertainment, one of the world's leading publishers of casual games, today announced the release of Mr. Bilbo: Four Corners of the World, a new restaurant sim. Starring a go-getting hamster named Bilbo, the time-management release was made to appeal to the millions of casual gaming fans worldwide.
While Bilbo dreams about marrying the daughter of a rich restaurateur, the stern businessman is opposed to entrusting his family's meal ticket to an inexperienced youngster. To prove his competence in the kitchen and demonstrate his moneymaking skills, Bilbo must turn a small diner into a highly regarded five-star restaurant.
Bilbo's heroic efforts take him on a culinary journey through four countries, including Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Amsterdam. Players can enjoy over 40 unique and exciting missions in which they bake scrumptious croissants, mix tantalizing cocktails and cook mouthwatering barbeque dishes. These and other tasks are presented in the form of amusing mini-games.
Several adorable animal characters from another Alawar game, Alex Gordon, also appear in Mr. Bilbo, giving the game added charm for every member of the family.
"Mr. Bilbo: Four Corners of the World was created primarily for female players," says Kirill Plotnikov, Alawar's vice president of publishing. "We believe ladies everywhere will have a great time experimenting with the various dishes and serving them to customers. They should also enjoy the lighthearted romantic story, which culminates in a delightful wedding. We worked hard on Mr. Bilbo and hope you'll join our hero on his first grand adventure!"

Relic has announced a major multiplayer update for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II that will effectively double the number of maps for the real-time strategy game. The update, called There is Only War, is due out later this summer. It's so big that Relic plans to beta test the update, though details on the beta are to come.
There is Only War will add eight new maps, bringing the total of multiplayer maps to 17. There will be four new 1v1 maps (Legis High Stratum, Outer Reaches, Calderis Refinery, and Leviathan Hive), two new 2v2 maps (Golgotha Depths and Calderis Refinery), and two new 3v3 maps (Angel Gate and Calderis Refinery). The fact that Calderis Refinery shows up three times is interesting, but it's not clear how it differs between 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 play.
In addition to the new maps, Relic says that the update will rebalance the game drastically. Units have been re-tuned, new abilities have been added, and many bugs and exploits have been addressed. There will also be new observer and referee options to allow spectator modes.
There is no release date other than sometime this summer.

Another StarCraft II battle report just hit the interwebs. This one is out a little early, as you won't find it anywhere on the official site just yet. Blizzard's third battle report (as obtained by Gamez.nl) shows off some new units, a new map called Scrap Yard and also features over 17 minutes of Zerg vs. Protoss action.
While 17 minutes may not be enough to completely satiate a decade-long deficit of StarCraft goodness, it sure does leave us smiling and gets us excited about playing it later this year. Get briefed on the full battle report right after the break.

EA DICE producer Gordon Van Dyke has said a trial version of Battlefield 1943 will be offered to compensate for the lack of a public beta - an inevitability on Xbox Live Arcade, but not always so on PlayStation Network. So that's good news.
"No beta, but we have a trial version that lets you confirm what you already thought - that this game is the best USD 15 I will ever spend!" Van Dyke told Eurogamer readers during a Live Text Q&A.
He wouldn't budge on the "summer" date for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network versions of Battlefield 1943, but the overseeing PR announced that the PC version will arrive later, in September.
Battlefield 1943 re-imagines Battlefield 1942, and trims the classes and maps down to three to promote accessibility. A fourth map, Coral Sea, will be unlocked after a combined 43 million kills by XBLA players for that version and PSN players for that. Van Dyke reckons this will take about two weeks. The PR, however, reminded us that this is in your hands.
There are no "concrete plans" for future content, producer Patrick Liu added, and the unlockable nature of Coral Sea was a "spontaneous" idea.
Battlefield 1943, unlike the expansive key instalments in the series, will tend towards arcade and cartoon-style action over realism. Suicide jeeps laden with explosives can be jimmied into choke points, for example, and pilots can drop bombs on other planes. Snipers can even pick off targets while parachuting, before plunging a knife into someone upon landing.
Squads can be created both before a game and during, and simple attack/defend orders given. Voice chat between squads is supported but, in Battlefield 1943, clans are not.
EA DICE is also working on Battlefield 3, but wouldn't offer any further details.
Battlefield 1943 costs 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40) from Xbox Live Arcade, and USD 15 (GBP 9) from the PlayStation Store - although the actual pound-price is likely to be higher.

June 19th, 2009, 21:10 Posted By: wraggster
Blizzard has confirmed that it's to introduce experience gains from playing player-versus-player battlegrounds in the next World of Warcraft content update, Call of the Crusade. This means that you'll be able to level characters entirely through PVP for the first time.
The move, hinted at during last year's BlizzCon, was confirmed in the latest test server patch notes.
XP will be awarded for any actions that yield honor points in the battlegrounds, excluding killing other players: capturing objectives, returning flags, winning and so on. It will still be a slower way to level than questing, according to lead content designer Cory Stockton: "We want Battleground experience to be rewarding, but we also don't want it to be the fastest way for players to level up."
For those fearing that this will put at end to "twinking" - the culture of keeping low-level, well-geared characters to fight in the lower battleground tiers - Blizzard has an answer. From Call of the Crusade (otherwise known as patch 3.2), it will be possible to turn off all experience gains by paying 10 gold to an NPC. Levelling can be resumed by paying the same fee again.
Non-levelling characters will be entered into separate Battleground queues, meaning that the twinks will be left to bother each other. Turning off levelling applies to all sources of XP, so it will also be possible, for example, to keep a level 60 character to enjoy the max-level dungeon and raid content from the original game.
Stockton said that there are plans to introduce equipment rewards - "mostly greens and the occasional blue item" - for players to roll on at the end of battlegrounds, but these will come after patch 3.2.
Stockton also promises that Blizzard will put more effort into creating new battlegrounds in future, after arguably focusing on arenas for the last two years. "We plan to deliver more Battlegrounds to the players as often as we can," he said. "We see Battlegrounds as a very large and important part of the World of Warcraft PvP game and we would like to expand the system as much as we can."
The Call of the Crusade patch also slashes mount requirements, adds an 80-player battleground called Isle of Conquest, substantially reduces the power of Death Knights, adds fancy new Druid animal form skins, and introduces the Crusaders' Coliseum, a new amphitheatre-style dungeon featuring five encounters covering all group sizes and difficulty settings.
Detailed on the official forum, the Coliseum will feature a 5-player dungeon with three encounters, and a 10- and 25-player raid with five encounters, each available in both Normal and Heroic modes. Heroic raids will also feature a new Tribute system, offering better rewards the fewer attempts it takes to down the final boss.
It's a huge patch with something for everyone, then, and shows promising signs of an effort from Blizzard to revive WOW's flagging PVP scene. If you're hungry for more info, try WOW.com (formerly WOWInsider).

old onto your hats folks, 'cause Microsoft has just done the unthinkable and extended availability of its Windows XP downgrade option, again. This latest move, of course, follows complaints that new licensing issues with Windows 7 could cause some serious headaches for businesses still hanging onto XP, and basically force them to either stock up on XP-ready systems before April 23rd, 2010 or face the possibility of Vista-only downgrades thereafter. The new deadline isn't quite as clear cut as past ones, however, with Microsoft saying only that the XP downgrade option will be available for 18 months after the release of Windows 7, "or until the release of a Windows 7 service pack, whichever is sooner." So, as ComputerWorld notes, if Microsoft pushes an SP1 update out the door six months after Windows 7 is released, folks could well be out of luck yet again -- at least until Microsoft sets a new deadline, that is.

When Vista was released, few developers really wanted to take advantage of it. Most customers preferred XP, so most developers did, too. But could Windows 7 be different?
Stardock, the publishers behind Sins of a Solar Empire and Demigod, seem to think so. CEO Brad Wardell has told Gamasutra "it would be good if everybody switched to Windows 7 as quickly as possible". And why? Because, as you've probably heard elsewhere, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been, and provides the jump in performance and accessibility its predecessor was lacking.
That's not to say he wants developers to focus only on Windows 7. "One of the things that comes up often is, 'How has Stardock made so much money on these niche games?'" Wardell says. "Well, because our games run on millions of boxes."
So a balance between the two, then. Something scalable if you could, developers. That'd be great, thanks.

Samsung has been making promises about a 32GB DDR3 memory module since it rolled out its first 50nm 4Gb DDR3 memory chip way back in January, but it looks like it's now finally delivered. While it won't be headed for regular desktops or laptops just yet, the company does have a new 1.35 volt 32GB module for servers which, in addition to packing that record-breaking capacity, also boasts a 20% better throughput compared to previous 1.5 volt modules and, of course, a lower power consumption to boot. As some math not performed by us will reveal, the module itself is made up of 72 of those 4Gb memory chips, which are lined up in rows of nine quad-die packaged 16Gb DDR3s mounted on each side of the circuit board. No word on pricing just yet, nor is there any word about Samsung's promised desktop and laptop memory, which are apparently still in the works -- in the form of 8GB DIMMs, at least.

Doom and gloom warnings about a new Microsoft operating system from some corners sure aren't anything new, but it looks like a particular licensing issue with Windows 7 could well cause some serious headaches for businesses transitioning from Windows XP. As InfoWorld reports, as things stand now, businesses that buy PCs before April 23, 2010 with Windows 7 preinstalled will have the option to downgrade them to Windows XP, which will let them upgrade to Windows 7 whenever they're finally ready to make the transition. Businesses that buy Windows 7-loaded PCs on or after April 23rd, however, will only have the option to downgrade to Windows Vista which, as Gartner analyst Michael Silver notes, is obviously of little help to XP-based organizations. Of course, Windows 7 does have its much talked about XP Mode, but Silver says that won't help many businesses since their IT departments would still be faced with the added workload resulting from managing a whole new OS. There are, however, a few workarounds, like Microsoft's Software Assurance Program, but those all involve an added cost, added work, or both.

Remedy Entertainment, the developer of the hit game series Max Payne, announced today that it has licensed Umbra Software's rendering optimization middleware for their highly anticipated new title Alan Wake.
"Umbra gave a significant boost in rendering performance on the Xbox360, and at the same time made our content creation faster. With Umbra's culling technology, Remedy's team can add more details to Alan Wake's world and concentrate on the cool visuals while minimizing tedious work such as adding portals," said Remedy Entertainment's Development Director Markus M?ki.
Umbra is a GPU accelerated rendering optimization middleware available for PC, Xbox360 and PS3. Umbra has two major application areas: it increases frame rate dramatically, and makes the content pipeline faster and more effective.
"It's been a pleasure working with Remedy on Alan Wake," said Marko Nurro, Umbra Software's CEO. "Remedy is one of the most innovative and technically competent studios in the world. Their games just rock, simple as that."

True Games, an international publisher of multi-player online games today announced that it is preparing the first expansion of new content and features for its recently launched MMORPG, Warrior Epic. The new expansion is scheduled to launch in July and will include all-new PVP gameplay that will be available to players who are level ten or higher. In addition, the expansion will also offer an all-new mid to high level region, "Trogken Swamps", which will feature tons of new missions, monsters, and unique gear for your Warriors.
"Our promise to the Warrior Epic community is that the game will never get stale or repetitive," said Peter Cesario, Director of Product and Business Development at True Games. "We want Warrior Epic fans to find something new and exciting about the game every time they login, and this new expansion is just one of many great gameplay updates they can look forward to as the community continues to grow."
Warrior Epic is an online, action role-playing game set in an original fantasy universe. In the game, players will assume command of a Warrior Hall from which they manage their characters' adventures. They can recruit from a wide array of Warrior Classes, each with its own style of play.
The Classes and the Hall itself can be upgraded visually as well as functionally. Players adventure together in multiplayer campaigns, adventure mode, solo quests and soon, PVP.
One of the most unique aspects of Warrior Epic is that death does not mean the end of a warrior. Instead, it opens totally new and strategic options for players. The game's unique Warrior Spirits System enables fallen warriors to not only be revived at any time at their hall, but also to be transformed into Spirits that can be bound to weapons to increase and open weapon abilities and skills, or they can be called out to inflict massive damage depending on player needs.

Matrix Games and Boku Strategy Games are thrilled to announce that Horse and Musket: Volume I, Frederick the Great is now available for release! Now gamers can enjoy tons of scenarios and many new features to the popular and proven Horse and Musket game engine.
David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said "Horse and Musket: Volume I breathes new life into a proven game system, which happens to be one of the best ever designed for 18th Century warfare. It's been a pleasure to work with Boku Strategy Games and Double Shot Designs on this new release and we can't wait to see what the Horse and Musket system has in store for gamers in the future!"
The Seven Years' War was fought across the globe and called by some the first "World War" as virtually every major power participated. In the center of events was Prussia, almost constantly at war and lead by the now legendary Frederick the Great.
Relive the exciting and trying days of Frederick the Great in Horse and Musket: Volume I, the improved and expanded combination of the previous Prussian War Machine and Prussia's Glory titles. Horse and Musket: Volume I is a reboot of the successful Horse and Musket series, including not only two solid historical titles in one package, but also many new game features, a powerful new editor, and a complete graphics overhaul to an already acclaimed gaming system.
Through the classic turn-based hex system, gamers take command of a wide variety of historical units and leaders as they try to follow in Frederick's footsteps across 10 of his famous battles, making for a whopping 40 scenarios in total. Maneuver your infantry battalions, cavalry squadrons, and artillery batteries to break the enemy lines and claim your own title as a great captain of history!
Perhaps the most important feature to celebrate with Horse and Musket: Volume I is the revival of this innovative gaming system! With many new features and improvements, this latest release still has the same engaging game mechanics that bring to life the battlefields and tactics of the 18th Century!
Get more information on Horse and Musket: Volume I, Frederick the Great from its official product page.

Dejobaan Games, LLC has made available a 30-level pre-release of their upcoming BASE jumping game. Fans can try a new 9-level demo and pre-order the full game for $15 ($10 off the full price) at www.dejobaan.com/aaaaa. Those who pre-order will receive the full 30-level pre-release, exclusive content as it's developed, and the the full 80-level game when it's released in Q3.
Since the indie studio released the game's public alpha test, they've added new content and incorporated player feedback to improve gameplay. The pre-release introduces new levels and game mechanics such as the option to trade human teeth for triple espresso shots and the ability to anger protesters for points. There's also a relaxing audio meditation for anyone too stressed out to play the game.
"AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity" is scheduled for a Q3 2009 release, and will require Windows XP/Vista, a 1.5GHz processor, 1.5GB memory, a 3D card with 256MB memory, and Microsoft DirectX 9.0c. Visit Dejobaan online at www.dejobaan.com, and follow them on Twitter at @RoRoDejobaan.
