Software originally developed for the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project can now be used on any old PC.
Sugar on a stick, as it is known, can be run from a USB drive to give aging PCs a new interface and access to collaborative educational software.
The software, designed for use by children, was launched at the LinuxTag conference in Berlin.
It has been developed by Sugar Labs, a breakaway organisation from OLPC.
"[Sugar on a stick] is a great new opportunity to breathe new life into these old machines," Walter Bender, founder of Sugar Labs, told BBC News.
The release could dramatically increase the use of the free software, which has until now been predominantly distributed with the XO laptop, the machine sold be OLPC.
The child-friendly computers, originally marketed as the $100 (£60) laptop, currently cost $199 (£120) each. Sugar on a stick, however, can be used on any machine.
"It runs on Asus, Dell, HP - it runs on anything," said Mr Bender. "It even runs on phones."
It has already been shown working on an Intel Classmate PC, one of the main rivals to the OLPC machines.
Sweet release
Mr Bender was formerly second in command at OLPC. He left in April 2008 after it was announced that the low-cost laptops would be offering Microsoft Windows software.
The software can be run from a 1GB USB stick
"I didn't leave OLPC because of the Microsoft deal - it was a symptom rather than the cause," he told BBC News at the time.
"I left OLPC because I think the most important thing it is doing is defining a learning ecosystem."
Mr Bender went on to found Sugar Labs, an independent effort to develop the software and interface used on the OLPC machines.
The interface emphasises collaborative learning, allowing children to share material between different machines. For example, they can write documents or make music together.
The open source software also contains a journal and automatically saves and backs up all data.
It has been used by more than one million children on the XO laptop and has also been released as part of other operating systems. For example, it was bundled with releases of the Ubuntu and Fedora Linux systems.
The latest release - Sugar on a Stick - allows anyone to run the software from a 1GB USB stick. It includes 40 programs, including a word processor, drawing application and games.
Mr Bender said the ability to transport the software and plug it into any computer would allow children to have a "consistent experience" wherever they worked.
"No matter what computer you have at home or at the library you're going to have the same use experience because you have sugar on a stick," he said.
The software can be downloaded for free from the Sugar Labs website.
It can be run on Linux machines, as well as Macs and Windows PCs. Recent Mac users and older Windows machines must use an additional "helper CD" to allow the computer to boot-up from the USB stick.
The software will also be used to power newer versions of the XO laptop, shipped in the autumn. However, the new machines will not use Sugar as the primary interface.
Instead, they will have a traditional desktop and allow children to run Sugar as a separate application.
"Our current belief is that Sugar should have always been on a stick," an OLPC spokesperson told BBC News. "In our case it should have been an application on top of a native Linux.
"We have been working on decoupling Sugar from our hardware since [Mr Bender] left."
Mr Bender said that the statement from OLPC was based on a misunderstanding by Nicholas Negroponte - head of OLPC - about how Sugar worked.
"What I think he meant was that Sugar should co-exist with traditional desktops," he told BBC News.
"Sugar always has and still does and will continue to do be able to co-exist with traditional desktops. He just never quite understood that."

Charitable organisation WWF has launched a casual web game made by Playgroup that hopes to raise awareness relating to the G8 summit.
The game, which parodies the real world meeting of influential leaders from across the globe, invites users to join as a ninth opinion former, and make policies alongside the likes of President Barack Obama and Gordon Brown. Players are then rewarded with an animated clip which shows the impact of their policy decision making.
Titled Face the G8, the game also utilises integration with social media by allowing users to create their own personalised campaign posters which can be uploaded to a special ‘Face the G8 photostream’ on Flickr. WWF plans to use the posters in campaigns to put pressure on the G8 leaders.
Videos from the game are also viewable through YouTube and share details about their exploits via their Facebook profile.

The Spore universe is expanding with infinite adventures! Today, Maxis, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio, announced that Spore Galactic Adventures, the expansion to the critically-acclaimed game Spore, is now available at North American retailers and will hit store shelves internationally on June 25th. Designed to expand the Spore universe, Spore Galactic Adventures delivers hilarious new adventures to players who aspire to become their own space captain, beam down to strange new planets, create customized adventures, and take their favorite Spore creature from zero to galactic hero!
"Spore Galactic Adventures enhances the Spore experience by blasting players off into space, turning ordinary creatures into legendary Space Captains," stated Lucy Bradshaw, VP and General Manager at Maxis. "For the first time, players can beam their creatures down to planets to experience all-new adventures or create custom-made missions of their own and share them with the world. With more than 107 million creations available in the Sporepedia, the Spore library of user-generated content for use in players' missions, the only limit is their imaginations!"
Expanding on the original Spore game, Spore Galactic Adventures adds variety and fun by allowing players to get out of their spaceship and explore colorful, wacky new planets. Players will turn their creatures into space captains, battle epic monsters in intergalactic arenas and fight intense planet-side races. In each mission, players earn experience to rank up their captain and earn game-changing items such as the Plasma Pulser and Swarm Magnet. In the box, the game includes 16 off-the-wall missions as well as an "Adventure Creator" tool that players can use to design their own missions. These personally-created missions can be shared with friends online and can be classed in leaderboards that track accomplishments, rank and medals earned.
In addition to the adventures in the box, players can download ten all-new adventures created by the writers of the outrageously funny, pop-culture parody TV show, Robot Chicken. Available for free to all Spore Galactic Adventures owners, the Robot Chicken adventures take players through such wacky quests as a mission to obtain a library card by finding a ruler-yielding librarian her true love, and an adventure to save a princess by battling demonic snowmen in a snowglobe. Conceptualized by Robot Chicken co-creators Seth Green and Matt Senreich, the Robot Chicken Adventures were imagined by the show's writing team including Matt Beans, Doug Goldstein, Mike Fasolo, Breckin Meyer, Dan Milano, Tom Root, Kevin Shinick, Hugh Sterbakov and Zeb Wells. With such a unique cast of imaginative characters, players can expect to experience missions with exploding poo, angry yetis, and banana wars.
To support Spore's dedicated fan community, www.spore.com will feature a bevy of fun content including additional downloadable adventures, contests and news.
Available for PC and MAC for $29.99, Spore Galactic Adventures is rated E10+ by the ESRB. The Robot Chicken adventures are rated TEEN by the ESRB. As an expansion pack, Spore Galactic Adventures requires the original Spore game to play.

Online entertainment company KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc., today announced the launch of a major new world expansion on the test servers of online virtual world Wizard101. Grizzleheim is a lush new environment based on Norse mythology that will further challenge players and introduce them to three new tribal races: Viking Bears, Wolves, and Ravens. The expansion also introduces item crafting, a bazaar, and several community features significantly increasing opportunities for adventuring, socializing and creativity for players of the massively popular online game.
"Wizards will have a great time exploring the woods and mountains in Grizzleheim," said Wizard101 Lead Designer James Nance. "It'll be accessible to lower level players as well, not just those who have completed Dragonspyre, and the new races will introduce some compelling elements to the storyline."
The world of Grizzleheim features an airy, outdoors landscape of snowy mountains, glacial ridges, and towering trees. Wizards will be able to explore several new adventure areas with rich environments. Wizards will first meet and learn about the Viking Bears of Grizzleheim - great traders with the ability to travel the worlds of the Spiral in their longboats. As Wizards become powerful and spend more time in Grizzleheim, they will uncover a great mystery about the world.
Grizzleheim also features new opponents for players to battle, such as wood spirits, barbarian boar mercenaries, and other mysterious creatures. Currently live on the test servers, KingsIsle expects to open the new expansion to all players in early July.
Popular with families who like to play together or connect over distance, Wizard101 was designed with the safety of young players in mind. It is rated E10+ by the ESRB. Anybody with a Windows based PC can play the Free-to-Play areas of the game for as long as they like. Advanced content is available by subscription or microtransaction. Wizard101 gift cards can now be found at more than 13,000 retail outlets nationwide. For details, visit https://www.wizard101.com/site/home2...20a1589af60841

Gamers can head over to Steam today to pick up the Empire Total War, Elite Units of the West DLC. All the major Western factions get one to three unique units in this pack. While that might not sound like a lot, the units themselves are the absolute cream of the crop and can go a long way towards snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. To help balance out their use, each of these units comes with a unique pre-requisite that you have to meet before you can build them in the campaign.
Britain can make use of heavy cavalry Horse Guards after building the Army Staff College in London, while the French can create Swiss Guard heavy infantry after completing the Palais Bourbon in Paris. Once Hungary has a Military Governor's Barracks, it can field its elite Hungarian Grenadiers. In fact, most of the elite units in this pack are heavy, shock-oriented troops. The few exceptions are Prussia's hit-and-run 2nd Hussars and Bosniak and Frei-Korps irregulars. The United States (woo!) benefits from the inclusion of the Legion of the United States and the US Marines, both of which bring a lot of flexibility to the battlefield.
And the best part about it all? It's available for only $3.49.

Well? How about it? If this online survey -- conducted by British marketing firm 2CV -- is to be believed, the next Command & Conquer game could feature "innovative" RPG features, as well as co-operative multiplayer. The survey goes on to suggest that the RPG features will be persistent throughout your entire C&C4 career, with experience points accumulating constantly over successive games, allowing you to unlock new "units, powers and upgrades."
The survey also mentions taking control of "the first ever mobile base in RTS games" (guess they didn't play Warcraft 3, then,) as well as a class system, co-op gameplay and 5-v-5 multiplayer. Basically, it sounds like an MMO. Is that what you want from the next Command & Conquer? Be sure to let EA know.
Of course, none of these features are confirmed and any number of them could be shelved between now and the game actually being announced. Check out the second screenshot after the break for the full list of potential features.

"You identified our secret marketing campaign!" EA CEO John Riccitiello said of the large-scale piracy of a pre-release version of The Sims 3. "That was a very large scale – concentrated on Poland and China – demo program." How could Riccitiello be so cool about piracy? He told IndustryGamers that the incomplete leaked game served as an invitation to buy the full version, so despite the inadvertent leak, the value of the data from this "experiment" may outweigh the losses.
"A huge amount of the gameplay is an overlay for the community," he said, "where you are sampling assets created by other people. So for the pirate consumer, they don't get the second town, they don't get all the extra content, and they don't get the community. It was only concentrated on Poland and China, but I think of it as not being that different than a demo."
This kind of piracy only serves as a test for EA's ongoing move to online content. Riccitiello believes that EA is moving toward selling "services," by which he means longterm online games for which the initial purchase is either nonexistent or a small portion of the total payment for the game. "By the way, if there are any pirates you're writing for," he told IG, "please encourage them to pirate FIFA Online, NBA Street Online, Battleforge, Battlefield Heroes... if they would just pirate lots of it I'd love them. [laughs] Because what's in the middle of the game is an opportunity to buy stuff.

Codemasters will introduce Book 8: Scourge of Khazad-dum to Lord of the Rings Online this Thursday, adding a new raid, new small-party instances, gameplay tweaks and a Summer Festival. The update launches in North America today.
The story follows some sorcerer bloke who wants to do evil things in the depths of Khazad-dum, which is also known as Moria - the big Dwarf place that Gandalf fights a Balrog in. Small parties will try to put a stop to this in a host of new instances, and there's a Dark Brotherhood quest arc that culminates in a 12-man raid.
The Summer Festival provides light relief to all this, tickling hairy toes with costumes, quests and Inn-based challenges.
Plus, as a thank you, Codemasters is offering a 20 per cent stablemaster discount to all active subscribers from 30th June.
There's no meaty list of gameplay tweaks just yet, but keep a Sauron's Eye on the European Lord of the Rings Online website for the Book 8 patch notes.

Realtime Worlds CEO Dave Jones has revealed that the Dundee-based developer - currently hard at work creating online title APB - will release the first details of its second MMO project next year.
Jones, speaking in his keynote presentation at this year's GameHorizon conference, wouldn't confirm anything more for now, other than that it was "a very ambitious project" that the company is "very excited" about.
He also revealed that it was the project which the company originally set out to create, and was what the initial USD 30 million in venture capital funding was raised for back in 2005 - with the implication that the "ambitious" nature of the game was why APB will now be released first.
Jones went on to talk about the reasons for the formation of Realtime Worlds - principally that he wanted to creative a new business based on online gaming, and challenge the traditional sense of creating games and funding those projects.
He also outlined the major challenges that the company has faced in setting up an online title for the first time - including latency and bandwidth issues, the need for a big QA team (which will surpass 70 people soon), the need to work on a twenty-four-seven basis and the big investment required.
He didn't give any specific details about APB's business model in terms of what it will cost players, but did say that the model would "remain flexible for as long as possible and focus on what it costs to run the game," with more details revealed closer to launch.
And regarding costs, Jones warned that any company attempting to create an online title should know "intimately" the concurrent player connection cost, a number which should include the operations team, infrastructure, customer support and bandwidth.
Realtime Worlds' first release was Crackdown, an Xbox 360-exclusive which gained significant critical acclaim - but Microsoft's reluctance to commit to a sequel saw the company opt for its own projects instead.

It seems we might get some additional details about some new downloadable content for the original Mass Effect soon. Mentioned in a BioWare Twitter update, no solid details have yet been made available, but it was said that something more might be revealed later this week. Here's the update's exact wording:
"Getting the feeling some news about the next ME1 DLC may be coming this week. Keep your eyes peeled."
Since Mass Effect was released back in November of 2007 only one bit of DLC, called Bring Down the Sky has been made available. The original game received high praise upon its release, and a sequel is expected early next year.

The most notable addition is the new "free floating" mode, which allows the virtual Astronauts to float from the flight deck, down the stairs to the mid-deck and, if the mission warrants it, through the mid-deck hatch and airlock to the Spacelab. This new major addition opens up the future possibility to seamlessly move about the Shuttle and related items and enhance the realism of missions and Shuttle operations. Another notable addition is the new, fully collimated 3D HUD which is now as close to the real thing as possible.
There are also some additional changes such as new and enhanced DAP modes, and the removal of T-00:05:00 and T-00:02:00 "no go" launch phase holds to allow for a better synchronization with the real NASA launches for what the SSM2007 community calls "Synch Launch Events". During these events SSM2007 users go online, connect via the SSM2007 TeamSpeak servers and perform synchronized pre-launch, launch and ascent phases together with the real NASA Shuttle launches. The nearest "Synch Launch Event" is scheduled for July 11, with the planned NASA STS-127 liftoff.
Exciting Simulations has also released the latest versions of the Quick Start and Commander's Reference manuals which now cover the latest changes and additions to the Space Shuttle Simulator.
These enhancements and changes are part of the on-going policy of improving and expanding the simulator following the direct feedback from the community.
The Space Shuttle Mission 2007 is available for online purchase in downloadable format at the SSM2007 official website: www.space-shuttle-mission.com. The latest Demo can also be downloaded freely at the same website.

The latest extension to PopCap’s world-conquering Bejeweled franchise has finally been unleashed into the wild with the news that Bejeweled Blitz, a Facebook-only adaptation of the puzzler, has officially been released.
The game’s been available in beta form since December 2008 and already attracts over 5m players a month on the leading social networking site. In total over 1bn sessions of the game have been played on the site, and PopCap also claims that 75 per cent of its users are female.
“One-minute Bejeweled was initially an in-house joke,” PopCap’s chief creative officer Jason Kapalka stated. “Who’d think anyone would play a ‘casual’ game with such a frenzied time limit?
PopCap’s head of online and social projects added: “It turned out the one-minute timer actually made the game more accessible, as a bite-size entertainment for people busy doing other things on Facebook.”
“The social nature of the game felt like the missing link. Playing Bejeweled on your own was always fun, but playing with and against family and friends takes it to another level.”

Eidos has announced that Championship Manager 2010 will be out on PC this September.
The game, which has been in development for over two years, will have a brand new feature called CM Season Live. Every four weeks for six months, this imports real-life 09/10 football season data for ten leading countries in Europe.
This will be a premium and optional extra. Beautiful Game predicts a cost of around five quid for all six updates, although an exact price has yet to be determined.

Groklaw brings us news of Microsoft holding the smoking gun in regards to the death of Linux on netbooks. You see, the question of Linux on netbooks in Taiwan was put forth to the Taiwan Trade Authority director, who replied, 'In our association we operate as a consortium, like the open source consortium. They want to promote open source and Linux. But if you begin from the PC you are afraid of Microsoft. They try to go to the smart phone or PDA to start again.' It's simple; fear will keep them in line. PJ points out, 'So next time you hear Microsoft bragging that people prefer their software to Linux on netbooks, you'll know better. If they really believed that, they'd let the market speak, on a level playing field. If I say my horse is faster than yours, and you says yours is faster, and we let our horses race around the track, that establishes the point. But if you shoot my horse, that leaves questions in the air. Is your horse really faster? If so, why shoot my horse?
