Combat Arms, one of North America's most popular multiplayer online first-person shooter games, delivers its latest update today for its newcomers and the over two million registered soldiers for hire with Operation: Power Surge.
Players will not only get a chance to hire the game's new Specialists class, but also can also put them to work on the game's latest map, Power Surge. This industrial pumping station is the game's latest map and can be played in four different game modes, Elimination, One Man Army, Capture the Flag and Spy Hunt.
Specialists are a new form of mercenary, carefully selected and raised from birth to be the ultimate combination of strength, stealth, brilliance and skill. Two Specialists quickly established themselves as clear leaders of the group since the beginning of their training. Scorpion, named for his ability to survive in any situation, and Viper, named for her quick and fatal attacks, are available for players through the use of in-game GP or Nexon Cash.
Specialists have access to four special items, which are detailed here:
Claymore:
A defensive, anti-personnel land mine utilizing a wireless detonator, the Claymore projects tiny steel fragments in a fan-shaped pattern, devastating enemies with its terrific explosive power.
Satellite Scanner:
A military grade, portable scanner reveals the locations of hidden enemies. Scanned data is transmitted to teammates via satellite, giving fellow soldiers an edge over the enemy!
Medkit:
A military syringe developed by NEMEXIS that is injected directly into the bloodstream. The Medkit restores a set amount of HP. Because of its portability, it can come in handy in the middle of combat situations when it is impossible to call on a medic. The Medkit can only be used for recovering one's own HP.
M32:
A 40mm semi-automatic, six-barreled weapon with a revolving magazine, this rapid-fire grenade launcher gives increased firepower to foot soldiers.
Soldiers looking for more information can head to http://combatarms.nexon.net for further details on the update.

- Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio, today completed the roll-out of the "Call to Arms" live expansion by officially opening the doors of 'The Land of the Dead' dungeon zone to the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) community. 'The Land of the Dead' opens the treacherous deserts of Nehekhara to players with the addition of a new RvR-gated zone filled with dozens of new Public Quests, instanced lairs, and a massive new dungeon to plunder in search of the Casket of Souls.
Depending on a realm's performance across each individual server during last week's 'Rise of the Tomb Kings' live event, either the Armies of Order or Destruction were the first to enter the new Tomb Kings themed zone. 'The Land of the Dead' launches today to all Warhammer players after the winning realm in each server received exclusive 24-hour advanced access to 'The Land of the Dead' to explore its many lairs, battle its menagerie of new monsters, and discover the unimaginable wealth it contains.
"As the Call to Arms live expansion neared its end, we were excited to watch the heroic conflict between the Armies of Order and Destruction play out on the different servers in the 'Rise of the Tomb Kings' live event," said Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer for Mythic Entertainment. "The real struggle for control over the 'The Land of the Dead' has only begun. Players on both sides are in for the fight of their lives as they attempt to unlock the secrets of the Tomb Kings for the glory of their Realm."
Based on the popular tabletop war game from Games Workshop, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm conflict that will provide players with an engaging battleground for years to come. Available now for PC, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB. For more information about the game and to download the free 10-day trial, visit www.warhammeronline.com.

OGPlanet announced today that the Soul & Siena expansion is now live in CABAL Online, its action MMORPG. This expansion offers new challenges and rewards to the high-level veterans of CABAL Online.
Soul & Siena introduces the Soul Ability System, greatly expanding the skills that characters can acquire. Ability Experience Points will be earned alongside regular experience points, and can be spent on Essence Runes that give players the passive skills of their choosing. Players will begin acquiring Ability Experience Points when their characters reach level 120 and can earn them in fields, dungeons or Mission Wars. There are 26 unique Essence Runes available, representing such diverse combat skills as Knockback Resistance, Magic or Defense Increase, Experience Point Bonus, and Sword or Magic Skill Amplification.
Players itching to try out their newly gained skills need look no further than Altar of Siena, the brand-new dungeon located in MutantForest. Soon their characters will be adorned with the Shiny SIGMetal armor sets and epaulets that drop in the new dungeon.
In addition to all of the new in-game developments, OGPlanet is instituting a sub password system to let CABAL players further secure their accounts. Using a four-digit in-game numeric password system, players will be able to lock their characters, equipment and warehouse with three unique passwords. The system also uses a soft keyboard system with randomized numerical characters, making it impossible for hackers to gain these passwords through keylogging software.

Allods Online is the upcoming free AAA MMORPG developed by Nival Online, the makers of Heroes of Might & Magic V. It will be published by Gala Networks Europe this Autumn in English, French and German at the gPotato.eu portal. The gPotato Team is proud to introduce players to the first faction. The Empire is an alliance between the Xadaganians, the Orcs and the Arisen races. They are one side in the war for domination of the Astral.
The Empire is a totalitarian state ruled by an enormous bureaucratic system, which controls all aspects of civilian and military life inside its territory. At its head is their self-proclaimed sovereign: The Great Mage Yasker. The Empire was formed after a bloody coup which saw Yasker throw away the old ways, and unite the Orcs and Arisen races with the Xadaganians. All three of these distinct races are fully playable to any player who chooses the Empire over the League.
The Xadaganians are a perfect war machine, always ready to fight for their ultimate goal: complete domination of the Astral. This human race is fuelled by a strong military culture and is highly industrialised, building gigantic cities similar in structure to hives where children are trained from birth to become soldiers.
The Orcs are strong and mighty creatures that live in the places that are inhospitable to other races. Their strength is mighty, capable of destroying almost anything in their paths when they gather for a raid. In this, warriors are supported by shamans and their mystical powers. Orcs are freedom loving creatures, and while they joined the Empire out of necessity to come under the protection of the Xadaganians, they remain very independent within the Empire however very faithfull to it.
The Arisen are a race of former humans that were brought back from the dead and granted the gift of eternal life. This keeps their bodies alive with a combination of mechanical body parts and mystical body paintings. Cold and detached from life in the Empire, they have been accepted as Empire citizens. Only fools openly joke about the smell of their rotting flesh…
Featuring six distinct playable races, Allods Online will give players a rich new world, with a gaming lore over a decade in the making. It features innovative and diverse new gameplay, and is completely free to play. Further information on the game will be released over the coming weeks and months.
It's easy to follow Allods Online. Visit the official European website at http://allods.gpotato.eu , read up on the history of the Allods Online universe at the gPotato.eu portal at http://en.gpotato.eu/Forum/?FCD=ALLODS_EN_N001 or follow the gPotato.eu RSS feed at http://rss.gpotato.eu/?game=all&lng=en to get the latest news, straight to your RSS reader.

EA has finally launched Battlefield Heroes, the free-to-play, ad-supported, cartoon online shooter.
The charismatic creation missed a 2008 launch, but has been out in open beta form for some time.
DICE designed Battlefield Heroes to be accessible to anyone, opting for cartoon visuals that can scale well on most old hardware. The game client is small and runs through the EA online website, where adverts fund the operation.
Furthermore, DICE decided to use an MMO-style hotbar of abilities to slow combat down a little, adding levels for us to chip away at over time.
Nevertheles, the Battlefield flavour remains, albeit in pantomime fashion, as moustached veterans clamber aboard biplane wings and pummel or pounce on enemies from there. Decking your hero out using a wardrobe fit for theatre is very entertaining.
Battlefield Heroes is clearly worth a look.

The Entertainment Merchants Association in the US has released a report outlining possible savings for publishers and retailers of up to USD 6 billion per year, but using radio-activated locks to prevent videogame theft.
The technology would be used to 'unlock' a game for use at the store checkout, with the EMA claiming that the system would only be used to prevent theft of physical media, rather than a new kind of digital rights management.
"This is not about DRM or other coding of the discs," the EMA's VP of public affairs, Sean Bersell, told GameSpot. "The technology to which we are referring would be a physical lock that is opened via radio frequency at the point of sale. And this is not about fighting piracy, but rather fighting shrink.
"The purpose is to make it easier for the consumer to purchase the product and enabling additional retail channels that have significant shrink issues to carry the product."
But the Entertainment Consumers Association's president, Hal Halpin, was less enthusiastic: "Publishers would likely be interested if EMA would guarantee that games wouldn't be resold through the use of the technology, but probably wouldn't say so overtly for fear of offending retail partners.
"I'd think that the low-hanging fruit might be the rentailers, who could implement this system and manage inventory more efficiently - provided that they had control in the locking/unlocking process, of course."

Chinese MMO players have been driven barmy by almost three weeks of World of Warcraft server outage. If that was Mario Kart outage, we'd lose the plot.
The MMO's servers have been offline in the country since midnight on June 7, when the operating license ended for Blizzard's former Chinese partner, The9.
The developer has chosen a new online company to take over, NetEase, but a company spokesperson declined to comment on when WoW would come back online, in a statement given to Yahoo. For goodness sake Blizzard, people will die.
A mass of Chinese players are taking refuge on Taiwanese servers for the time being, where log-in times are stretching to a several hours due to the massive demand.

Microsoft just laid out the Windows 7 pricing grid for us, and here's the big takeaway: Vista and XP users will need to pony up $119.99, $199.99, or $219.99 on October 22 to score their Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate upgrade, and those of you who want a full retail disc will need to roll up with $199.99, $299.99, or $319.99 respectively. It's not quite that simple, though: starting tomorrow, June 26, you'll be able to pre-order upgrades at much cheaper prices -- $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional, just as we'd heard -- but pre-orders will be strictly limited in number and are expected to sell out quickly. Obviously we'd prefer it if final pricing was $49 and $99 for everyone, but it's not a bad start, especially since participating manufacturers will be offering cheap / free upgrades to 7 on new computers sold after tomorrow with Vista as well.
Oh, and don't you worry about scoring a place in line, because we're here to help: later today we'll be giving away 100 codes that guarantee a pre-order spot at the discounted prices, and you'll be able to share the code with two friends. You'll have to act fast, though -- the codes will only be valid for 48 hours. Keep your eyes peeled for our recession antidote post around noon EST, and get your clicky-fingers ready.
Update: Looks lke we've got our first participating manufacturer -- HP machines sold after tomorrow will receive free upgrades to 7, and we're hearing Sony will announce a similar offer soon. We'll be keeping a full list of announcements as the day goes on, check back later for more.

Oh, Thanko, fine purveyor of hidden cameras and ill-advised input devices, whenever it gives us a peripheral that looks like, well, a peripheral, it feels like a big step in the right direction. And what do we have here? The Silent Mouse EX is a bit of a misnomer. After all, it isn't totally silent -- rather, the manufacturer claims that it generates 35.5db of noise when in operation. Compared to 58db of sound the "average" mouse makes (or so we've heard), that is... well, it's less. Actually, we have a hard time believing anyone cares about this sort of thing, but if you'd like to prove us wrong, you can hit that read link and put ¥3,180 (approx. $33) where your mouth is. Or better still, just use a trackpad.

June 24th, 2009, 23:21 Posted By: wraggster
Stardock announced today that publishing partner Paradox Interactive has adopted Stardock's Game Object Obfuscation (GOO) to protect Paradox PC game titles from piracy. Beginning with the Paradox title Majesty 2 and continuing on with other titles for both retail and electronic software sales, Paradox will wrap the games in GOO.
Announced by Stardock earlier this year, GOO is a new technology that developers can use to protect their game executable. When a protected game is run for the first-time, the player simply needs to enter in their email address and serial number. Once validated, the game can be played normally and typically never needs to connect to the Internet account.
Fredrik Wester, CEO at Paradox Interactive, said "Stardock and Paradox have a long history of successfully working together, a history that dates back to our publishing Stardock's Galactic Civilizations II in Europe. We were among the first publishers to come on board Stardock's Impulse platform when that launched. Consequently, it was only natural that we tried Stardock's new DRM technology."
"In our testing, we found GOO to be very effective in protecting our titles, while at the same time offering a less obtrusive user experience," continued Fredrik. "GOO meets our needs while protecting the rights of our consumers."
Brad Wardell, CEO at Stardock, continued, "Stardock has been outspoken in advocating solutions that protect consumer's rights. At the same time, we also recognize that many publishers are going to seek to protect their properties via some type of DRM solution. Our goal in developing GOO was to find a middle-ground solution, a technology that would treat consumers not as criminals, but instead with respect. It is great getting feedback from partners like Paradox that we have succeeded in our goal."
More information about GOO can be found here: http://www.impulsedriven.com/developers.aspx.

While their controversial indie horror game The Path is still being enjoyed and discussed by players everywhere, Tale of Tales have started work on a new project. Much smaller in scale -but not in ambition-, "Fatale" (working title) is similar to their 2008 piece The Graveyard: an explorable painting or an interactive vignette more than a goal-oriented quest.
"In fact," point out designers Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn, "Fatale" is inspired directly by paintings. In the 19th century, a favorite theme of romantic and salon painters alike was the "femme fatale": the fatal woman who lures men to their downfall. We wanted to do something with that theme in realtime 3D. And also with the idea of a painting as a frozen moment in time."
"Fatale" is based on the legend of Salom?, who, 2000 years ago, demanded the head of John the Baptist as a reward for dancing for her stepfather, King Herod. Oscar Wilde's 1891 interpretation of Salom? as a young woman in love with the prophet is the main inspiration for the project. In "Fatale" you will be able to explore the scene of this momentous historical event, experiencing the story through the emotions and thoughts of the characters involved.
"We're interested in the idea of a love story that ends in death," muse Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn, "but we also want to include other elements of the tale. The fact, for instance, that Salom? may have been just an insecure girl who was manipulated by her mother, Queen Herodias -who then ends up becoming the real "femme fatale". We're also very sensitive to the political tension that underlies the tale: a Middle Eastern country -Judea- occupied by Westerners -Romans- at a time of religious unrest -the birth of Christianity. And this girl, Salom?, just has the head chopped off of one of the most important figures of the time. On a whim, apparently, or for unrequited love, changing the course of history."
Tale of Tales have invited previous collaborators to join the production: Laura Raines Smith will be, once again, animating the characters; Gerry De Mol will compose dance music; while Jarboe and Kris Force take care of the soundscape and voice acting. The characters are being created by an extremely talented and very well known game artist, whose name will remain a secret for now.
Production of "Fatale" is supported by Flanders Audiovisual Fund and Villanella. "Fatale" is scheduled to be released on October 5th 2009, the 78th anniversary of the first public performance of Salom? in English. The play had been banned from the British stage for almost 50 years because of its depiction of biblical figures.
Tale of Tales is a small independent studio founded in Belgium by new media artists Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn. They run the online multiplayer screensaver The Endless Forest. And two of their previous creations, The Path and The Graveyard, were selected for the Independent Games Festival (in 2008 and 2009, respectively). "Fatale" is not the first project of the two around a biblical theme. Previously, they have created The Godlove Museum, a series of interactive websites based on the first five books of the Old Testament. And, a commission for the San Francisco Museum of Art in 2001, "Eden.Garden" was one of their first game-like projects. It was based on the theme of the Garden of Eden and featured the designers themselves in the roles of Adam and Eve.

Turbine, Inc. today unveiled the new content coming to Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (DDO Unlimited). Launching later this summer, DDO Unlimited will introduce an innovative new pricing model that allows players to download and play for free, purchasing adventure packs, items, and account services a la carte from the new DDO Store, or to subscribe to get unlimited access to all of the game's content. Players interested in getting a sneak peak of the new DDO Unlimited can sign up for a chance to participate in the Beta program at http://www.ddo.com.
The new upgrades to DDO Unlimited include:
New Player Class: Players can now create characters using DDO Unlimited's newest class, Favored Soul. Favored souls draw on divine magic to both heal and destroy. Like clerics, favored souls have access to powerful healing spells, but they are also more skilled with weapons than any other spell caster. Like sorcerers, they get a larger number of spell points than other spell casters and cannot freely switch spells at taverns or rest shrines.

Want more Command & Conquer? Then you better make some coffee and free five minutes of your time..
EA has recently published an online survey, asking fans for feedback on what they'd like to see in another title from the series. It's asks what type of new gameplay elements you'd like brought to the RTS genre, including multiplayer, unit types, story modes.
The survey itself even mentions Command & Conquer 4.
"Command & Conquer 4 allows C&C fans to finally experience the epic conclusion to the 15-year Tiberium saga with innovative RPG-like player progression, persistent in both single player and Multiplayer modes, co-op play, and new stylized, live-action cinematics."
Keep in mind this is just a survey, not an announcement for a game. So don't get your hopes up too high.
We sent this along to EA to see if we can get any official confirmation. We'll let you know what they say.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures receives its Update 5 today, setting the seal on Funcom's complete overhaul of its MMO with a new RPG and itemisation system, as well as adding new high-level content.
Servers were taken offline at midnight and downtime is expected to last 12 hours, as confirmed on the official forums.
Update 5: Gangs of Tarantia adds the Tarantia Commons zone. New quests, instances, bosses, rioting, rooftop action, leper colonies and three-way factional gang warfare all feature in this slum area of Hyboria's capital city.
More significantly perhaps, the game's stats and itemisation system receives a complete rethink, making stats easier to understand, items more powerful, and therefore loot more desirable. This brings Age of Conan closer in line with MMORPG conventions and has been at the top of players' wish-lists since the game was launched just over a year ago. Every character class will also be receiving a major overhaul in the update.
Additionally, Update 5 boosts the ranking benefits of player-versus-player minigames, improves the guild cities, adds social pets, and overhauls the gem crafting system.
You'll also have the option to create one new character at level 50 if you already have a level 50 or higher, an extra character slot if your account is over six months old, and improved guard AI, vendors and travel options.
You can read more in an official preview hosted on MMORPG.com, in which Funcom hints that the next update will please guilds.
After a troubled first six months for Age of Conan, word from the Conan community and our own Rob Fahey is that the game is much improved, but the reception of the changes in Update 5 will be crucial to its future. We'll be looking at them in more detail soon.
