Blizzard's games, such as World of Warcraft and StarCraft, are perhaps known for their breathtaking cinematics as much as for their gameplay. The process behind these cinematics is complex, involving an entire modeling and coding team — they even needed to make their own physics engine! AtomicMPC has the full story behind these incredible videos. Quoting: 'Storyboards become animated storyboards (thanks to a storyboard team who are also trained animators) complete with temporary music to help set the tone and get the pacing right. Then the animators and modeling team get involved, creating a rough 3D version of the final animation. While the modeling team works on characters and environments, the animators work with very low polygon characters and as the models are refined and updated the animations are refined. This is also where production technicians get involved, supporting the more technical developments like hair and skeletal systems for the characters. And then the effects team kicks into gear.

Perhaps emboldened by the similar setback to Champions Online, Jumpgate Evolution developer NetDevil has announced that the space MMO will not be released in June, as was originally planned. NetDevil's president, Scott Brown, said, "One of the things we've always promised is that we would not release an unfinished product, nor would we subject players to a sub-par experience. ... Jumpgate Evolution is nearly feature complete, but since entering the Friends & Family phase of testing we've been able to bring new eyes onto the game and get solid, crucial feedback from actual players and fans. Based on these results, it is clear that the product needs more time to meet its objectives. As an example, we have received and read lots of feedback regarding the instanced and public PvP systems. The feedback has been vital in helping us polish and improve this core feature of the game." A new release date has not yet been selected.

LG's certainly been known to dabble in the third-dimension, and while we're still waiting for it to ship those "one or two" 3D TVs this year, at least we're confident that it's getting closer. Over in South Korea, the company has showcased a new Full HD (1080p) 3D monitor with what it says is the highest brightness level of any competing panel. Sadly, viewers are still required to don glasses when ingesting the action, but this take on the tech enables said eyewear to be somewhat thinner and less cumbersome. Have a peek at the vid down in the read link.

Well, here's a wild new spin on the Android for netbooks debate: Canonical, commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, is creating an Android execution environment that would allow Android apps to run on Ubuntu and other desktop-style Linux distros, which seems like the best of both worlds for netbooks in most cases. Canonical already has a working prototype of the execution environment, and plans on making the necessary changes to the kernel in its next version of Ubuntu to give Android all the juice it needs at the core level and will open source the project soon.
Things are still early, and there's a lot of work to do before this is going to really make the highly specialized Java-based Android apps actually usable on regular Linux -- they're currently working on granting Android access to the Ubuntu file system, for instance -- but we love where this is headed.

CyberAgent America, Inc., a publisher of free-to-play online games, today announced a new ranking system for free-to-play multiplayer action game NinjaTrick™. Currently in open beta, NinjaTrick is a Flash-based game for everyone that is easy to pick up and play, but deep enough to reward players who employ clever strategies on the battlefield.
The ranking system, which tracks the progress of players as they compete in Ninjutsu matches, is currently live in the game's open beta. CyberAgent America's ranking system will track the progress of each entrant in the Contest, including the number of wins and ranking within each element. The contest winners will be determined based on ranking placement on June 18, 2009. Winners will be announced on June 25, 2009 on the NinjaTrick official blog at http://info.ninjatrick.com/ See Contest Rules at info.NinjaTrick.com for additional details.

Merscom announced today's game release of Righteous Kill 2: Revenge of the Poet Killer, inspired by the feature from Overture Films, Righteous Kill, which is debuting on Starz on June 6, 2009 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
In Righteous Kill 2: Revenge of the Poet Killer, the player once again takes on the role of Erica Dean as she looks into a new rash of murders. The game is set about a year after the events of the first Poet Killer. A mob hit man is found dead, with a poem lying on his body. Erica Dean is called in to find the killer before things get out of hand. Work through multiple versions of varied locations looking for clues to the identity of the Poet Killer. Enlist the help of Mary Jacobs, a new forensic officer, to assist Erica in analyzing the items from the crime scenes. Hunt down the killer and put an end to his vigilante killings before it's too late.
"Given the tremendous success of the original Righteous Kill game, we are confident this product will help our customers extend the experience they enjoyed both with the game and movie." explained Lloyd Melnick, chief customer officer at Merscom. "Given the higher production values in Revenge of the Poet Killer, this game will almost certainly be another hit for Merscom and Starz Digital Media."

The owner of games site GamesByEmail.com created Dice-O-Matic, 'a machine that can belch a continuous river of dice down a spiraling ramp, then elevate, photograph, process and upload almost a million and a half rolls to the server a day. ... The Dice-O-Matic is 7 feet tall, 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep. It has an aluminum frame covered with Plexiglas panels. A 6x4 inch square Plexiglas tube runs vertically up the middle almost the entire height. Inside this tube a bucket elevator carries dice from a hopper at the bottom, past a camera, and tosses them onto a ramp at the top. The ramp spirals down between the tube and the outer walls. The camera and synchronizing disk are near the top, the computer, relay board, elevator motor and power supplies are at the bottom.' While not called out in the article, the pictures clearly show a Dell Mini 9 running the show (and performing the optical recognition of the dice values.) No, it's not running Linux."

CyberSports' massively multiplayer online game Football Superstars is set to be released at retail in the third quarter of 2009.
Featuring a persistent online world, where users control a single player rather than a whole team, the game has previously only been available as a free online download.
The boxed retail version will be sold for GBP 19.99 and will include new features such as an increased variety of game modes, new training options and the chance to buy licensed items from Puma and Reebok.
"We already have over 300,000 registered users with the free-to-play version, however by introducing it to a new gaming audience through retail we feel that this will massively benefit the experience for all players," said CyberSports head of sales and marketing Phil Booker.
A premium edition of the game will include three months subscription, 40 Football Superstars bonds, four unique skills and exclusive licensed Puma sportswear.
"We are really excited to be in a position to offer a retail product and have some unique content appealing to both existing and new players alike making the box quite a collectors item," said creative director Steve Marshall.

At the beginning of this month, a swarm of protesters descended upon the Army Recruitment Center housed within Philidelphia's Franklin Mills Mall. Their qualm with the Center focused on its use of first-person shooters to attract young, Call of Duty-experienced potential recruits. Now, a few weeks after the protest march, Philadelphia Daily News columnist Christine Flowers offers a different look at the technologically endowed Recruitment Center, and the controversy that's been surrounding it as of late.
Flowers, a conservative, Philly-based lawyer, doesn't see the Center's use of games as an enticing trap for impressionable adolescents. Instead, she agrees with the sentiment of the Center's manager, Maj. Larry Dillard, who sees the technology as a way to boost "transparency." Flowers writes, "There's no subterfuge in giving someone an accurate picture of the army experience." Any veterans in the audience today that want to compare "the army experience" to a few rounds of America's Army?

Over at Gamasutra, there's a massive new interview with Epic (Mega)Games founder Tim Sweeney, the guy who's still a key technical figure at the Unreal Engine/Gears Of War developer. He discusses his early programming days, the story behind classic shareware game/tool ZZT, the origins of Epic, the '90s shareware business, and even a bit about the future as well. Particularly neat is his revelation that you can still order ZZT via mail, with orders fulfilled by his dad: 'My father still lives at the address where Potomac Computer Systems started up, so he still gets an order every few weeks... he's retired now, so he doesn't have much to do. Every week, he'll just take a stack of a few orders, put disks in them, and mail them out.

Want a good example of why Intel -- or we, the consumer -- needs a strong competitor? DigiTimes' has it from sources at motherboard makers that Intel will delay its mainstream desktop Core i5 platform (including Lynnfield procs and 5-series chipsets) from July to early September. A rumor with merit given DigiTimes' proven sources within motherboard makers like ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI. The reason for the delay is to allow vendors to deplete 4-series inventories that have piled-up during the economic slow-down. Of course, if AMD or... well, AMD could muster the silicon to compete with Intel at the same price point then such a delay would not be possible. How much you say? DigiTimes has the Core i5 processors priced at 2.93GHz ($562), 2.8GHz ($284) and 2.66GHz ($196) when purchased in bulk.

Horror-themed first-person shooter NecroVisioN has been allowed an Australian release following graphical edits to its violent content, according to online reports.
The game, developed by Polish studio Farm 51, was previously refused classification by the Classification Board in Australia, effectively banning the game from the region.
According to Australian games site Games On Net, the game has now been approved by the board with a rating of M, following graphical edits that include enemy blood being replaced by "a gray 'dust' effect."
NecroVisioN is a first-person shooter that takes place in an alternate-history World War I that features zombies. The title was released on the PC in Europe and North America earlier this year to mostly mediocre reception, with review score aggregate Metacritic showing an average rating of 61.
