London-based developer Firefly Studios has announced plans for Stronghold Kingdoms, which they describe as the world's first castle-based MMO.
"What is exciting about Stronghold Kingdoms is not only are we taking Stronghold online and massively multiplayer, but we are funding this ourselves as an independent developer", said Firefly CEO Eric Ouellette.
The new game is based on the ongoing Stronghold franchise, which has sold 5 million units since the first game in 2001.
Firefly, which also has offices in the US, claim the game will feature a unique hybrid of Web and PC-based gaming, allowing players to build their own online kingdom, with a mix of real-time strategy gameplay and long term planning.

Harcos, creators of Mana Energy Potion, the energy shot for gamers, announced a partnership today with premier simulation gaming developer The Sim Factory, LLC to create a Mana-themed track and car for its ARCA SIM RACING game. As part of the agreement, Mana Energy Potion will also take a bold step forward by becoming one of the first companies to utilize in-game machinima footage in an advertisement not promoting the game from which the machinima footage was used. The machinima ads for Mana Energy Potion, a video game-inspired product, will incorporate real-time video game images set within ARCA SIM RACING's interactive 3D game.
"This agreement helps put Mana Energy Potion on the bleeding edge of in-game advertising, and it's fun," said Aaron Rasmussen, co-founder and vice president of marketing, Harcos. "We are thrilled to be utilizing machinima footage in place of live action footage to promote our product. Using machinima allowed us to get footage of a car crash without the expense or hassle of custom 3D visual effects or running my car into a tree. I've always been a gear head and loved racing games, and Sim Factory has created an absolutely amazing product. We can't wait for their gamers to dive into the new track and test out our car."
Mana Energy Potion is a vitamin-packed premium energy shot that delivers up to eight hours of sugar-free energy without the nasty aftercrash normally associated with sugary energy drinks. The intense liquid is housed in a uniquely-shaped 1.69 fl oz spherical potion bottle and is aimed at helping gamers stay alert as they battle through marathon gaming sessions.
The new Mana-branded ARCA SIM RACING track and car will be available for free download to current users of ARCA SIM RACING through www.asrseries.com, starting on today. Mana Energy Potion's machinima footage advertisement will begin airing later this month on the popular video podcast "Inside Sim Racing" which is available at www.insidesimracing.tv and on iTunes.
For additional information about Mana Energy Potion, or to locate a local distributor, please visit www.manapotions.com. The first advertisement can be seen on "Inside Sim Racing" or on the fun page at www.manapotions.com/fun.html.

Nexon America unveiled details on the new cooperative game mode, Fireteam, set to launch on Wednesday, May 27 for its popular multiplayer online first-person shooter, Combat Arms. The new, eight-player cooperative mode teams players up with one another to defeat the Sand Hog, an enemy terrorist army.
Fireteam offers four-, six- or eight-player game options to pit players against hordes of computer-controlled enemies while experiencing an intense, multi-staged military mission. With three different difficulty settings (Normal, Hard and Extreme), players can earn extra life, or respawns, by reaching defined checkpoints. Fallen enemies drop ammo boxes and medical kits so players can replenish ammo and health in the field. Fireteam mode features a specially-designed map, tuned specifically for Fireteam Mode. And since each game is individually scored based on performance, players can try to earn the highest score.
The Sand Hog is a terrorist military organization suspected of illegally supplying weapons to nearby countries. An infiltration team sent in earlier had signaled it had obtained some vital Intel but failed to make it to the extraction point and are now believed to be captured or killed. The mission, Operation Desert Thunder, asks players to infiltrate the area and gather the necessary Intel, and if possible, find and rescue the infiltration team.

Live to tell the tale of becoming a notorious pirate captain or suffer a fate of eternal damnation. Disney Interactive Studios today announced the development of Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, an epic, action role-playing game (RPG) from Propaganda Games, Disney's video game development studio in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Armada of the Damned is an entirely new experience within the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. The game takes place before the events of the blockbuster films. Players will take on the role of a pirate and embark on epic land and sea adventures. Numerous moral and character choices will need to be made that affect their character and the original story within the world. Players will explore a massive open world while fighting enemies, mystical creatures and Mother Nature, both to gain experience and stay alive. Supernatural elements familiar to the Pirates of the Caribbean world will also affect their character's story and influence their choices.
"Armada of the Damned is a dynamic action role-playing game that captures all of the franchise's excitement, unpredictability and action while delving into narrative elements never before explored within this unique universe," said Dan Tudge, vice president and general manager, Propaganda Games. "Our team's collective experience with industry-leading RPGs and action titles provides a strong foundation for us to create and build a compelling action role-playing title."
Armada of the Damned is scheduled to be released in Fall 2010 for next-generation consoles and Windows PC.
Armada of the Damned is an extension of the globally successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which began more than 40 years ago as a theme park attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. The franchise continues to excite park goers with millions of visitors experiencing the four current theme park attractions at Disney parks around the world. The three blockbuster films grossed more than $2.6 billion worldwide in theaters and have continued to be successful on home video. Disney Interactive Studios has shipped more than 6 million units worldwide of self-published multiplatform Pirates of the Caribbean video games, which were inspired by the "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" films.

Linux just got a major slap in the face today from Asus. One of the highlights of Linux going mainstream was the wildly popular Asus Eee PC preinstalled with a customized Linux distro geared towards web applications. While I personally never got what the big deal was, I was still happy for all the Linux people out there waiting for this day, but it looks like the cause for celebration won't be lasting much longer. Asus and Microsoft have teamed up and have made a site called It's Better With Windows. The page touts how easy it is to get up and ready with Windows on an Asus Eee PC, while slyly stating that you won't have to deal with an "unfamiliar environment" and "major compatibility issues.' While it is silly to state such a thing since Asus built the Linux distribution specifically for the Eee PC, I give Microsoft two points for snarky comments

Our initial experience with Windows 7's multitouch was decidedly less than stellar, but it looks like Microsoft's taking the initiative to ramp up the usability with the newly-unveiled Touch Pack. It's a software suite consisting of three games and three Surface apps, including a a globe you can pinch and twist around, the ever-popular surface collage for images, and and a zen-inspired lagoon screensaver. OEMs making touchscreen-capable Windows 7 rigs are being offered the pack to use as a pre-installed option, so look for these to arrive around the same time as the new OS, which should be sometime this holiday season. In the meantime, GottaBeMobile's gotten their hands on the app collection early, and you can view their efforts in the video after the break.

According to recent market reports, consumer spending has slowed in all markets, but less so in the gaming industry, and in particular less in the PC gaming segment.
Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, today announced the market forecast for PC gaming hardware and the results are encouraging overall, even with the modest drop due to economic conditions.
The total PC Gaming Hardware market is forecasted to drop $1.4 billion (-7%) in 2009 versus 2008 (from $20.07 to $18.65 billion.). The decline is due to reduced sales because of the recession, and lower prices on PCs and components (also due to the recession and competitive pressures.) But, in such an environment, PC gaming systems seem to have suffered the least discounting which illustrates the value consumers place on such systems.
Furthermore, in 2009 the PC Gaming Hardware Market, approaching $19 billion, is forecasted to eclipse the hardware market for all gaming consoles combined by almost $2 billion. (Console costs include the console, a certain amount of accessories, and a factor for the cost of an HDTV to display the games on.)
The JPR PC Gaming System Hardware Market report is a unique analysis that does a bottom-up forecast of systems based on GPU and PC shipments, and a macro-economic top-down forecast based on the eco-demographics which covers 36 countries.
United States
Spain
Greece
South Korea
India
Turkey
Japan
Netherlands
Argentina
China
Brazil
Indonesia
Germany

Czech Republic
United Kingdom
Hong Kong
Thailand
France
Poland
Algeria
Italy
Belgium
Malaysia
Canada
South Africa
Romania
Australia
Austria
Hungary
Switzerland
Sweden
Chile
Russia
Denmark
Portugal
Colombia
JPR updates the data in the PC Gaming Report every quarter to compensate for changing economic conditions, GPU and PC shipments, and the information in this release reflects our latest results.
The report shows the expected shipments in three classes: Enthusiast, Performance, and Mainstream for both desktop and the newly emerging notebook category. It shows the distribution of branded sales (HP, Alienware, etc), non branded ("White box"), aftermarket component sales and DIY sales, as well as peripheral sales of gaming components.
This is the most comprehensive report on the PC gaming hardware market ever produced and took almost five years to bring it to life. Individual segments can be purchased separately for $5,000 and the whole set is available for $12,000 which includes a bonus total market summary report.
So why in a recession?
The PC Gaming market is dropping a little in 2009 just like all other industries are forecasting, and yet less so - why? The conclusion the researcher at JPR have come to is that people are staying home more, less movies, less dinners out, postponed vacations, and turning to other forms of entertainment. PC Gaming is a very economical form of entertainment, a $50 game can provide hundreds of hours of play, and it's not uncommon for players to replay a game. Also, purchases of a PC for gaming can be shared since the machine can be used for watching (and creating) videos, as well as office work and web browsing, something consoles can't offer.

The world's most deadly fighting force is back in all new multiplayer combat, as action game developer and publisher NovaLogic Inc. announced today the release of Delta Force: Xtreme 2 (DFX2) game for the PC. The sequel to the bestselling Delta Force: Xtreme is supported by the NovaWorld Community, a multiplayer network that provides smoother, faster and seamless gameplay for up to 150* players per game. With 10 single-player missions and nine co-op missions within two campaigns, players immerse themselves into the Delta Force experience by battling enemies in Asia. Now available for download from www.novalogic.com, Valve, Direct2Drive and RealNetworks and at retail locations nationwide, DFX2 carries the recession busting price of just $29.99 (MSRP).
"We listened to the fans of the original Delta Force: Xtreme and created an amazing multiplayer world filled with the features they asked for most; intense gameplay, game balancing and an all-around FUN experience," commented Michael Domaguing, NovaLogic's director of marketing. "Teamwork is key to being successful in DFX2 and we give you all the tools to make this a great party game, no matter where you are in the world, from Milwaukee to the Middle East."
DFX2 offers intense military gameplay in stunning 1080p "Full HD" and Dolby 7.1 Surround sound, and with game servers placed strategically around the world, the NovaWorld Community provides the gameplay that fans demand. Featuring 20 content-rich multiplayer maps, DFX2 supports five of the most popular game types: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Team King of the Hill, Capture the Flag, and Flagball. Each detailed map will have something for everyone, from large, vehicle heavy battlefields to small, intense engagement zones. In addition to the feature-loaded multiplayer experience, gamers of all skill levels can mix it up in two heart-pounding single-player or co-operative campaigns where players assume the role of a Delta Force operator sent to Asia to bring a drug cartel and former Soviet mercenaries to justice.
The NovaWorld Community allows every element of the gameplay, from the enhanced ballistics to the innovative in-vehicle spawn system, to be carefully coordinated to support a fully balanced experience where teamwork is deadlier than individual firepower, and in DFX2, intelligence and creativity are rewarded as much as fast-twitch reflexes. The game also ships with a powerful MED level editor, which will allow gamers full utilization of game assets to create their own levels, including additional multiplayer game types.

Game’s associate producer Grant Rodiek refuses to rule out Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of upcoming title
Speaking exclusively to MCV’s sister CasualGaming.biz as part of its Girl Gaming Month, The Sims 3’s associate producer Grant Rodiek has stated that the game’s development team deliberately houses more females than you’d normally find in such a group.
“We have a large female presence throughout our team – more than the typical game development team,” he stated. “Obviously we don’t have a design document titled ‘Sims for Females’, but it’s something we always have on our minds.”
Elsewhere in the interview, when asked about a console port of the title Rodiek refuses to rule out such a move, adding: “The Sims 3 has been developed from the ground up for the PC and Mac. Our entire focus is on this version at this time.”

Well, it sure took 'em long enough. In August of last year, the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) got us all hot and bothered when it introduced the SATA Revision 3.0 specification to double transfer speeds to 6Gbps. It's taken until today, however, for that very specification to be completed and released. Thankfully for those who love to relish in the past, the new spec is backward compatible with earlier SATA implementations, and for those looking forward to new innovations, you'll appreciate the new streaming commands for isochronous data transfers between audio and video applications and the Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector for more compact 1.8-inch storage devices. We're told to expect SATA Revision 3.0 demonstrations next month at Computex, but who knows how long it'll be before this stuff seeps into shipping products.

Latest title in series presents unique opportunity for IT retailers, says publisher
EA has said that IT retailers are ideally placed to take advantage of the 'broad appeal' of The Sims 3.
Speaking to PCR, the publisher said that because the game had engagement with a large swathe of the UK's population that doesn't normally play games, it opened up opportunities for non-traditional outlets, which do reach those demographics – such as IT retailers – to sell the title.
"The Sims 3 has such a broad appeal from teenagers, all the through to the older generation, and is one of those rare releases that genuinely offers something for everyone," EA's marketing manager Claire Ridley told PCR.
She added that anticipation for the game was at fever pitch. "We have a hugely active Sims community who are counting down the days and creating increased momentum by evangelising the game with every new asset or piece of information."
The title, which launches on June 5th, is the latest release in the series that has become one of the best selling franchises in gaming.

Sony Online Entertainment's free-to-play MMO Free Realms has notched up over two million unique users since launching a month ago.
According to the developer, 75 per cent of users are under 17 years of age, with 46 per cent under 13. Nearly a third of all players are female.
"In less than a month, Free Realms has captivated a core player base of tween and teen gamers, while also strongly resonating with MMO gamers," commented John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment.
"We wanted to create a game to play with our families and are excited to have hit the mark with our intended audience."
Although free-to-play, users can buy Station Cash game cards from Best Buy, Blockbuster, Rite Aid, 7-Eleven and Target to upgrade to Membership status and buy in-game items for the game.

With the release of The Sims 3 around the corner, there has been predictably little change in NPD's list of the top ten selling PC games in the US, with expansion pack World Of WarCraft: Wrath of the Lich King still at number one.
For the week ended May 16, The Sims 2: Double Deluxe (a bundle of the original game and two expansion packs) remained at number two, with Creative Assembly's Empire: Total War moving up three places to number three.
World of WarCraft: Battle Chest (a bundle including the original game, expansion pack The Burning Crusade and two strategy guides) moved up one place to number four, with Valve's zombie co-op shooter Left 4 Dead down two places to number five.
EA's Spore was up one place to number six, with the original World of WarCraft release down three places to number seven. Role-playing game compilation Fallout Trilogy was a non-mover at number eight, while Bethesda's Fallout 3 re-entered the top ten at number nine - the closest thing to a new entry in the chart.
Expansion pack The Sims 2: Apartment Life was a non-mover at number ten. The Sims 3 is due for release in the US on June 2 and is expected to be the most significant new PC release of the year so far.

Take-Two has announced that two of its key fiscal 2009 titles - Mafia II and Red Dead Redemption - have been delayed to a fiscal 2010 release window.
According to the publisher, both titles are being given an increased development schedule in order to apply an extra layer of polish.
"Mafia II and Red Dead Redemption are now scheduled for release in the first half of fiscal 2010 to allow additional development time for the titles and to maximise their full potential in terms of the quality of the player experience and market performance," said Take-Two.
Mafia II is being developed by 2K Czech, which was known as Illusion Softworks prior to its acquisition. Red Dead Redemption - the open-world Western sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver - is being developed by Midnight Club and Table Tennis developer Rockstar San Diego.
Take-Two lowered its guidance for the 2009 fiscal year when discussing its second quarter results, due primarily to these launch delays.
