The Sims 2: Double Deluxe has taken the top spot in the US PC chart for the last week in May, according to data from NPD.
It was one of two Sims 2 expansions that have regularly featured in that chart for many months, but will surely be replaced by The Sims 3 when the data for the first week in June is released.
Wrath of the Lich King continued strong in second place, ahead of Spore, while the World of Warcraft: Battle Chest and original WoW titles were fourth and fifth.
Empire: Total War continued to sell in sixth place - the most expensive title at retail in the top ten at USD 49 - ahead of Reel Deal Slots Adventure.
Civilization IV: Complete Edition took eighth, ahead of The Sims 2: Apartment Life and Left 4 Dead.
In total Electronic Arts accounted for four titles in the top ten list, followed by Activision Blizzard with three and SEGA, 2K Games and Phantom EFX with one apiece.
1. The Sims 2: Double Deluxe
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
3. Spore

Over the last half decade, gamers have been forced to wander through familiar worlds and universes. Studios have been licensing IPs left and right, grabbing everything from the Wheel of Time to Star Trek. Originality seemed to be a lost art, and although these worlds were fun to adventure in, many didn't hold the same sort of magical spell that original titles like EverQuest or Dark Age of Camelot once enjoyed. But change is coming. Blizzard Entertainment revealed that their next MMO would be an original IP, and this year's E3 lineup featured more brand new games than titles derived from existing worlds. So, why the sudden shift? To answer that question, Ten Ton Hammer's Cody 'Micajah' Bye sent a number of questions to original IP development teams across the world.

Novell plans to bring the wealth of open-source software to everyday users through an 'open-source apps store.' 'I would compare what's happening on netbooks with what's happening to the smartphone,' Holger Dyroff, vice president of business development at Novell told PC Pro. 'There's a core experience, but then the ability to customise that experience. On the user end, all they'll see is an open-source applications store with one-click downloads of new software. Unlike the other stores though, they won't have to pay for any of those applications, which will be very attractive

The launch of Demigod was troubled by piracy and networking difficulties, which publisher Stardock worked quickly to correct. They've now released a documentary that gives a detailed look behind the scenes of diagnosing and fixing those problems. It includes meetings, interviews with the devs, and part of the bug-tracking process during a frenzied 108-hour work week.

Less than three months after its initial release, Tale of Tales are adding a new chapter to their introverted psychological horror trip. "The Path - Prologue" is a standalone application that is free to download for everyone. As such, it functions as a trial version of the game, even though it contains content that is not part of the full release.
The Path is a short horror game inspired by Little Red Ridinghood. You play six sisters, the Red Girls, who are sent to their grandmother's house, one by one, with the explicit command to stay on the path. But not all young women can resist the seductive allure of the dark forest along the way. In the new chapter, entitled "The Path - Prologue", you take control of the mysterious character of the Girl in White, who roams the forest and can assist the Red Girls in their explorations.
"People who have already finished The Path will recognize some aspects of the Prologue," admit designers Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn. "It is similar to a certain part of the game. But not the same. A prologue should show what happened before the events in the story. But in this case, it may seem like it's showing things that happened after. A mystery that will make more sense after playing the full game. We didn't want to simply give away part of the game as a trial. We wanted to add something to the story instead. And give everybody something new to play with, including those who have already played the full game. But it does function as a free demo for the game: it gives users a taste of the atmosphere and a means to check if their computer can run our technology."
Since its release on 18 March, The Path was met with an impressive amount of high praise. And also an, albeit smaller, amount of passionate rejection. Some claim that the indie title is pretentious mumbo-jumbo and others see it as a veritable mile stone in the evolution of the medium. This controversy pleases the designers tremendously. They'd be worried if suddenly everyone would like their work. Tale of Tales explores the artistic potential of games technology. Sometimes this requires leaving behind all known territory and confronting the audience with the unusual, the unsettling, the sublime.
The Path was created by Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn with the help of Jarboe and Kris Force (music), Laura Raines Smith (character animations), Hans Zantman (technical art) and Marian Bantjes (logo and calligraphy). Production of The Path was supported by Creative Capital, the Flemish Authorities, Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Design Flanders, CultuurInvest and Villanella.
"The Path - Prologue" is available as a free download for Mac or PC from:

Among the torrent of news is the announcement that Safari 4 ships today, boasting "unparalleled speed," especially when compared to IE8 (this is Apple talking, not us). Included in the new browser is a full history search, featuring a cover flow view of the user's browsing history (as well as a full spotlight search). And it looks like they've thought a lot about the browser when building the new OS -- In Snow Leopard, when a plug-in crashes, the browser remains intact, meaning you can just reload the page, not the browser itself. Available today (as in, right now) for Leopard, Tiger, and -- of course -- Windows.

Israeli company Come2Play has unveiled a trio of new casual titles for its online casual multiplayer gaming platform.
Ramble Scramble, Super Star Balls and Goldminer are all available now, and have all been developed by indie game developers using Come2Play's open source API.
Ramble Scramble offers a fast-paced word spelling challenge, while Super Stack Balls combines the likes of Dr. Mario and Bejeweled, and Goldmine takes the form of frantic strategy title.
“We are very excited for the release of Ramble Scramble, Super Star Balls and Goldminer,” said Alon Barzilay, CEO of Come2Play. “These games are great examples of what game developers can put together using the Come2Play multiplayer API.”
The games are all playable through the Come2Play front end, or as widgets on various websites including Facebook, Google and MySpace

Microsoft has said user feedback has been key to the development of Windows 7, taking the lessons learned from Vista as the basis of the release candidate.
"The release candidate is really a reflection of us stepping back and listening to our customers," explained Microsoft OEM marketing manager, Laurence Painell. "It is especially important in the current economic climate that we ensure people are happy with the experience that we're providing."
Microsoft's Partner Group manager Simon Aldous added that the company had recognised that partners have an important role to play with the upcoming release of Windows 7. "We learnt from the launch of Vista that we have to ensure that our partners across all parts of the channel have the sales skills, the licensing skills and capability to drive service revenue around adoption."

EA’s The Sims 3 has delivered on the months of hype leading up to last Friday’s release by debuting at the top of the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack UK All Formats Top 40.
The Sims 3’s opening weekend was so successful that it now becomes the fourth fastest selling PC game of all time in the UK, lagging behind only World of Warcarft’s duo of expansion packs and Eidos’ Championship Manager 4.
The achievement becomes all the more impressive when the high level of piracy suffered by the game is taken into account.
Whether the excessive number of illegitimate downloads will dent the game’s ongoing chart achievements is yet to be seen.

Windows 7, the next major release of the world's most popular operating system, will be officially available to the public on 22 October.
Microsoft is hoping it can avoid the negative press that surrounded the launch of Vista, the last major Windows release, almost three years ago.
Windows 7 has been designed to be compatible with Vista so users do not have to invest in new hardware.
Customers who buy a new PC with Vista will be offered upgrades to Windows 7.
Microsoft's Charlotte Jones demonstrates Windows 7's new features
At the Computex 2009 trade show in Taipei, Microsoft's Steve Guggenheimer said: "We've received great feedback from our partners who are looking forward to offering Windows 7 to their customers in time for the holidays."
Mr Guggenheimer said that Microsoft will make an upgrade option available, so PC makers and retail partners can offer customers the ability to purchase a Windows Vista-based PC and install Windows 7 when it is released.
When Vista was launched many users expressed frustration that the operating system did not work with all types of existing hardware and peripherals, or programs used commonly on PCs.
And a Vista compatibility programme for hardware proved to be confusing and, in some cases, somewhat misleading.
Windows 7 features
Windows XP mode - a virtual PC that can run older applications that might not run on Windows 7
Remote Media Streaming - access your home digital media over the net
Aero Peek - full screen previews of applications
Windows Touch: Support for multi-touch devices
Gadgets: Widgets now appear on the desktop and not in a sidebar
Windows 7 will also have "comparable system requirements" to Vista, which should mean that if your PC is capable of running Vista it will also run the new version.
Windows 7 promises a major usability improvement on Vista, and a simplification of security measures which caused frustration for many users.
Beta testers of Windows 7 have reported that it is faster than Vista, especially in terms of start-up and shutdown sequence of the computer.

3D laptops? Sure, why the hell not... after seeing a desktop shoved into a vase at Computex we guess anything goes. According to Campbell Kan, VP of mobile computing at Acer, we can expect a 15.6-inch Aspire 3D laptop by the end of October. The laptop will run Windows 7 and support native 3D content (something that's becoming steadily more available) while running software that converts 2D content into 3D with presumably mediocre effect. Unfortunately, viewers must wear those bulky, stereoscopic glasses for the full experience. But if anyone stares, just frantically scribble something into a Moleskin with a deep furrowed brow -- they'll assume you're an artist. A glasses-free version is in the works too though that's TBD if you want to wait.

Up until now, Fusion-io's glorious creations have largely been priced out of consideration for general consumers. During E3, however, the storage gurus teamed up with Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel in order to debut a consumer-level PCI Express SSD card. Engineered to provide wicked fast transfer rates within high-performance PCs, the ioXtreme is an 80GB PCI Express card that should make your traditional HDD seem absolutely antiquated. Better still, it's slated to ship next month for the not-too-terribly-egregious price of $895, which certainly gets you into the game for a lot less than OCZ's (admittedly more capacious) Z-Drive.

Rod Humble, the head of the EA Play label, has defended the company's policy of releasing regular expansion packs for The Sims games over the years, by explaining that if there wasn't customer demand it simply wouldn't make good business sense to produce them.
Electronic Arts has come in for criticism in the past for a tactic which was seen by some as cashing-in on the game's popularity - despite nowadays the concept of expansions, downloadable content and sequels becoming a perfectly accepted, and expected, part of a franchise's lifecycle.
"I've heard [the criticism] over the years - when we opened the Store, which enables you to buy selected items of furniture, and now with Sims 3 I hear it a bit as well," he said.
"My perspective is that first of all, this is additive stuff - so if we weren't making the expansion packs or the extra content and charging for it, we wouldn't be building it. It's not like anybody is losing anything if they're thinking they could have gotten it for free - I assure you, I've seen the profit-and-loss, we just couldn't afford to do it from a business perspective.
"The second thing is, from a player perspective, I've always been in the opposite camp and I just don't get it. I just wanted more stuff for my game that I loved. I like my extra Burnout cars, I like the extra content I get in the games - I like the extra content in Fallout, I like the game so much I want more stuff.
"So to me, I like it, and I think that for a lot of our core players they'd say they love it. I just think that for the players that don't have it, they feel like they're falling behind if they don't have all the expansion packs, and to help serve them is over time we put out a value price compilation - say the first two expansions bundled for a lower price. There's a significant proportion of players who wait for that, they know it's coming and they can afford to wait a year or two, get the whole lot in one go."
Humble also revealed that the majority of sales for the original Sims title actually came after the launch of The Sims 2, while expansions for the latter title still sit high in the PC charts today - some several years after being released.
"There's just so much value in those games - if you bought The Sims 2 compilation now it would keep you busy for a very, very long time, and I think that value is recognised," he said.

At E3 2009, there were a large number of MMOs present, and THQ featured hands-on play of Dragonica in their booth. However, much of the content was exactly the same as information I wrote about a few weeks ago, which isn't surprising considering that the closed beta for the title is currently in progress. For more info on the title, check out our preview, and for additional information on the character classes within the game, check out our class breakdown feature.

During E3 Paradox Interactive announced an expansion pack for Elven Legacy, the Fantasy Strategy Wargame for the PC developed by Russian studio 1C: Ino-CO.
Expanded Storyline
The Order of Marcus, long dormant in its isolation, is expanding. The renowned ranger Cornelius, armed with his spear and trained in the arts of subterfuge, has been tasked with preparing the world of Illis for the coming of the order.
New Features
Ranger Cornelius possesses a holy spear that can apply special powers to his attacks. In Elven Legacy, each unit's operation could only be performed once per turn - one move and one attack. Ranger Cornelius can now use special attributes of his sacred spear without losing his turn. For example, he can activate a paralysing stroke and then throw the spear at the enemy. The enemy unit will not only suffer damage from the attack, but they will also be unable to move during the enemy's turn.
The order of completing the missions will now affect future events in the game. There will be only one final ending, but there are several ways to reach the finale.
Additional new features in Elven legacy:Ranger:
16 new missions
3 new heroes
5 unique artifacts
12 new spells
Elven Legacy: Ranger is an expansion for the war game Elven Legacy. Elven Legacy:Ranger is scheduled for release in Q3 2009 through all major digital download outlets for a suggested retail price of $9.99 / €9.99.
Download the Elven Legacy demo here: http://www.elven-legacy.com/index.php/downloads/demo/
Read more about the main game at: http://www.elven-legacy.com
The original game Elven Legacy is required to play Elven Legacy: Ranger.

Last year, Perfect World Entertainment launched Perfect World, a Chinese mythology inspired MMORPG. We covered many of the points about the title in our review. However, since then, the Perfect World design team has released two expansions, with a new one planned for release this fall. At E3 2009, I managed to see one of the new elements for the expansion, genies for characters. It was explained that if you go into a PVP situation, you frequently know exactly what your enemy's skills are and what they can do, as well as what you can do to counter it.
The genie system is designed to remove this advantage because of the unpredictability of everyone's genie. As you level up, you gain points that you can allocate for your genie's stats, which further affects the powers that your genie can use within battle. Some powers will minimize damage from magic spells, while others will hinder close quarter combat attacks. The real trick is that you won't know what each genie brings to the battle until you've attacked its master, at which point you'll discover what its abilities truly are.

Earlier today at E3 2009, Paradox Interactive released details about Mount & Blade: Warband, the upcoming expansion for the RPG released last September. Warband returns players to the land of Calradia, which has been torn by war and other strife. Players will raise and lead their own war bands, giving them command over dozens of soldiers that they can lead into battle. Improved strategic AI has been included, as have new diplomatic options that provide players with additional negotiation tactics. If all discussions break down, you'll receive new options whenever you choose to siege kingdoms.
Players will also find a number of additional kingdom management options, such as marrying ladies of the realm, recruiting lords as vassals and managing fiefs in different ways. Your characters will also be able to take advantage of new weapons, armor and animations, and thrown weapons, arrows and bolts can be picked up and re-used in case they miss their targets. Horse archery has been improved, as have the variation in the sizes of horses themselves. Players will gain additional commands for their companions, and will also be able to interact with new factions with unique troops. Finally, Warband includes a brand new multiplayer feature that allows up to 32 players to engage on a map in team deathmatch. Mount & Blade: Warband will be released in Q4 2009.

When it was released almost ten years ago, Majesty captured people's attention as an unconventional real time strategy title. Instead of directly manipulating your forces, you had to persuade them to do your bidding via flags and bounties. It was a creative twist on the traditional fantasy game, and fans couldn't wait to return to this universe. While it's taken longer than many fans would have wanted, the sequel will be coming from Paradox Interactive later this year.
Majesty 2 will be keeping many of the traditional elements that made the first title stand out, like the fantasy setting as well as the RTS and RPG elements. Some of the same heroes and villains from the first game will make a return, although Paradox wasn't willing to mention which ones will be included. Some of the voice actors from the first title will return as well. Similarly, focusing on defending caravans and trade posts will be vital to ensuring that your kingdom runs smoothly. But along with these standards will come some additional improvements. Along with the standard attack and defend flags that you could use to entice heroes to do your bidding, there will be explore and fear flags to expand your control of your warriors.
Speaking of your heroes, there are now two ways to resurrect these characters, which is a vast improvement over the first title. In the original, heroes couldn't be brought back if they died. In Majesty 2, you can pay to revive heroes at a graveyard, or have a cleric use a spell to instantly return a fallen character to the land of the living. Further adding to the heroes is the newly included House of Lords, which will allow you to grant lordships to specific heroes. This gives you the ability to bring heroes through each mission without having to start over again, meaning that by the end of the 16 missions in the game, you should have extremely powerful warriors. Combine this with the fact that you can now lump heroes together into fighting units, and you have a significant force that should be able to protect your kingdom.
Majesty 2 will also pack additional side missions to take advantage of, as well as multiplayer maps with completely separate quests from the single player campaign. Along with new 3D visuals, sound effects and improved AI, Majesty 2 will be an interesting twist on the fantasy strategy title when it comes out later this year.
