he last time a GPU milestone this significant was passed, it was June of 2007, and we remember it well. We were kicked back, soaking in the rays from Wall Street and firmly believing that nothing could ever go awry -- anywhere, to anyone -- due to a certain graphics card receiving 1GB of onboard RAM. Fast forward a few dozen months, and now we've got AMD dishing out the planet's first factory-clocked card to hit the 1GHz mark. Granted, overclockers have been running their cards well above that point for awhile now, but hey, at least this bugger comes with a warranty. The device doing the honors is the ATI Radeon HD 4890, and it's doing it with air cooling alone and just a wee bit of factory overclocking. Take a bow, AMD -- today's turning out to be quite a good one for you.

Secret spells and sharpened steel clash this summer as Kalypso Media today announced Time of Shadows for the PC. A dynamic new third-person action role-playing game (RPG) developed by SkyFallen Entertainment / 1C, Time of Shadows has players traveling a labyrinth of multiple worlds as they uncover sinister plots and battle evil forces in an attempt to save the Earth from imminent disaster.
"Time of Shadows is a feature-rich RPG set in a landscape of overlapping worlds that provide players with an incredible assortment of options and scenarios," said Stefan Marcinek, Managing Director, Kalypso Media. "We've integrated a high level of customization and personalization into a thrilling mix of combat and story, all of which is sure to enthrall both RPG and fantasy fans."
In Time of Shadows, the fragile peace that had tenuously held Earth together has disintegrated and the time needed to save the planet is running out. Armed with magic abilities and over 100 different spells, players venture forth against the destructive wizardry and might of the Legions of Shadows. The journey is fraught with peril as players begin a monumental quest to the labyrinths of The Other Worlds as they attempt to save the world.
Time of Shadows will be available this August on PC. For more information, please visit www.kalypsomedia.com.

Later this morning NCsoft is going to announce to the world the first major expansion pack in the City of Heroes franchise since 2005's City of Villains. Called City of Heroes: Going Rogue, the new expansion will "blur the line between heroes and villains" as they travel to the parallel universe Praetoria. Praetoria is governed by Tyrant, the cruel counterpart to Patriot in the main City of Heroes universe. Heroes and villains will confront a variety of challenges in their quest to confront Tyrant and his Praetorian guards.
And while we love a good parallel dimension story, the real attraction in Going Rogue is the new alignment system that allows heroes to become villains and villains to become heroes. Heroes and villains can gradually change their alignment by undertaking certain, clearly marked missions, and by other actions and decisions made during the game.
The game's executive producer, Brian Clayton explains the appeal: "For years, players could choose between playing as a hero or a villain. Now we will present a third, malleable path where players can be affected by the results of their actions, enabling them to further develop, unveil new perspectives, and overcome new challenges."
The ambiguity of allegiance is represented by two brand new characters: "Maelstrom, a pistol-wielding hero gone rogue, and a Desdemona, a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed."
City of Heroes: Going Rogue is being developed by the Paragon Studios team, creators of the recent Mission Architect System.

With the news of 3D Realms going under and -- by association -- Duke Nuke Forever going under, the Internet has been buzzing about what the decade-long development cycle would have yielded.
Today, the picture has become a bit clearer.
A plethora of screens and a gameplay synopsis popped up on VoodooExtreme.com earlier today from a few developers looking for work. The story reads like you'd expect a Duke game to go -- he's searching for something and driving an RC car, there's a clone research facility, Duke goes on a talk show and so on. Whether anyone will ever get to play this game remains to be seen, but at least you can now live vicariously through screens.

Come July, mouse and keyboard-loving PC gamers will finally get their hands on Street Fighter IV after having been made available exclusively to consoles since February. To reward their patience, Capcom is offering PC gamers a game and peripheral bundle for the same price of a standard Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 title. Last week, Capcom quietly unveiled the details of the bundle on the Capcom-Unity blog. According to the post, for $59.99 players will get the standard Games for Windows DVD packaging as well as the increasingly hard to find Mad Catz FightPad.
The included controller will be the Xbox 360 variation of the controller and will feature the Ryu faceplate design. Due to its seamless integration with both Xbox 360 and PC, users will be able to use the controller on both devices. On July 7, the bundle will be made available primarily through Capcom's online store and Amazon, but the bundle will also be at a number of mass retailers. Unfortunately there will only be a limited number of the bundles available, and as it currently stands, only North American retailers have placed orders for the SKU. Sorry our international brethren!

Online gaming news site Virtual Worlds recently had the opportunity to sit down with a couple of FTC attorneys who are currently investigating adult content in virtual worlds. The FTC is apparently working on a report for Congress (which is due in December), spawned by an inflammatory report on Second Life's "rape rooms" from Illinois' Rep. Mark Kirk. Thankfully, according to Virtual Worlds, the FTC is "on a fact-finding mission, not a witch hunt."
Coincidentally, this news comes on the heels of an announcement from Second Life's creators, Linden Lab. The virtual world will soon see a massive redistricting in order to separate the game's adult content from its all-ages content. To put it simply, Linden Lab will soon be creating an "adult content continent" that minors won't be able to access. May we suggest the name "Creepyvania" for this brave new landmass?

2D Boy co-founder Ron Carmel believes you, the consumer, are forcing PC publishers to rethink and perhaps abolish DRM altogether. The mob is Rome, after all.
Negative fan feedback has already forced BioWare to adapt and then disregard DRM from its games, and put titles like BioShock, Spore and Riddick into the hot-seat for their stringent anti-piracy measures.
"I definitely believe this is all the result of a change in the public perception of DRM, a sort of grass roots uprising," the World of Goo creator told Gamasutra. "Gamers are much more vocal about it than they used to be, perhaps because they are so accustomed to downloading music without too many restrictions."
Brad Wardell, boss of Demigod digital publisher Stardock, agrees: "Spore was the final straw that broke the camel's back. Someone who buys software does not want to be made to feel like a chump for buying it; much of the outcry came from legitimate customers who said that they shouldn't be restricted by DRM, especially since people with pirated versions weren't.
"Yep, Demigod is heavily pirated," he admits on the Stardock blog. "And make no mistake, piracy pisses me off.
"If you’re playing a pirated copy right now, if you’re one of those people on Hamachi or GameRanger playing a pirated copy and have been for more than a few days, then you should either buy it or accept that you’re a thief and quit rationalising it any other way," writes Wardell.
Ron Carmel has been vocal about DRM in the past, calling the protection software a "waste of time" when speaking at GDC recently.
"Publishers aren't stupid. They know that DRM doesn't work against piracy," he told Gamasutra. "What they're trying to do is stop people from going to GameStop to buy USD 50 games for USD 35 - none of which goes into the publishers' pockets. If DRM permits only a few installs, that minimises the number of times a game can be resold."
Carmel said not only does it take time to implement DRM protection, but the developer also has to share revenue with the company that provided it.
"Not only doesn't it work but, ironically, if your game gets cracked, then the person with the cracked version has a better gaming experience than the person with a legit version who has to enter a registration code to play," said Carmel.
World of Goo used no DRM and Carmel said fans have written to and congratulated 2D Boy because of it, resulting in an "element of good will" among the community.
"I'm convinced that we lost very few customers because of piracy," he added, even though he found 10-times more people playing World of Goo than had legitimately paid for it.
"People who pirate the game are people who wouldn't have bought it anyway. I don't know anyone who would try to find a cracked version and, if they can't locate one, they say, 'OK, since I can't find it for free, I'm going to go out and buy it.' I just don't think that happens," he said.
Wardell shares the opinion that time spent implementing DRM and tying to stop pirates is time wasted.
"When the focus of energy is put on customers rather than fighting pirates, you end up with more sales. It seems common sense to me," he adds on the Stardock blog.
But not all are against the DRM protection. The Entertainment Software Association's Ric Hirsch believes the software is a "reasonable response" to piracy, and reckons just because some pirates find away around it doesn't mean DRM doesn't work. "No security technology is 100 per cent effective," he said.
A popular solution to piracy is increasing the value of a game through DLC, which is only obtainable by legitimate customers. This is a tactic BioWare will hotly pursue in the future.
Stardock has created its own system called Goo, which ties a game-key to an email account, meaning the registered user can re-install as many times as he or she likes.
Valve has tackled a large portion of piracy by forcing players to launch games through an online Steam account. Furthermore, Valve believes its new set of Steamworks features will soon obsolete DRM altogether.

Nvidia launches its stereoscopic 3D peripheral set across the UK, Holland and the Nordic region
Nvidia is embarking on an initial European launch of its famed stereoscopic 3D peripheral sets for the PC.
The 3D Vision package will consist of wireless glasses, a high-power IR emitter and a set of software programs that is said to apply a convincing, flicker-free, stereoscopic 3D experience to PCs.
In a press release sent out by the chipmaker, a number of developers had offered positive comments on the emerging technology. Corey Rosemond, a marketing manager for Windows Gaming said: “By including support for previously released and upcoming Games for Windows titles, PC gamers can expect a new level of immersion in full stereoscopic 3D, and enjoy broad support for the hottest games.”
She added that “there’s never been a better time to be a PC gamer.”
A 3D Vision unit alone will be priced at around €159 and £129.99.
Though designed to work with monitors and TVs running at 120Hz and above, those tempted to buy should be aware that only a select number of PC monitors will be able to fully utilise the product.
This is why Nvidia is also launching a bundle package that includes a fully-compatible Samsung LCD monitor, priced together at €479 and £399. This bundle will also be available in the UK, Holland and across the Nordic region.

The release candidate for Microsoft Windows 7 will expire June 2010, and the software giant will let users know they need to pay to upgrade by shutting down the system every two hours for three months. According to Microsoft: "The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.

DOSBox, the emulator designed to run DOS games on modern operating systems (and not necessarily on a PC), has been chosen as project of the month for May on SourceForge. It's the latest award granted to a piece of software that 'simply does what it is supposed to do,' as the authors say. After having amassed more than 10 millions downloads, it will soon be getting an update that's been awaited for almost two years

Trion World Network has announced its first title, Heroes of Telara, will be shown at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June.
While details are scarce, a press release issued on Friday revealed that Heroes of Telara is a fantasy-themed MMORPG that "will feature an unprecedented level of rich and dynamic gameplay, driven by recurring events, unexpected challenges and limitless new content."
"Trion is excited to share what we have been working on and to reveal the universe of Heroes of Telara," said Russ Brown, VP of Trion's Channel One division. "The team is producing a magnificent new universe in which players can immerse themselves in endless adventure."
Trion World Networks announced an unnamed fantasy MMORPG in early 2008. The project was led by CCO and Might & Magic creator Jon Van Caneghem, who left Trion last month under potentially "inflammatory" circumstances.

Ben Bell, executive producer of the The Sims 3, admits that studio is yet to ponder future releases
The development team working on The Sims 3 has yet to even consider what expansions might follow the full release of the game next month, executive producer Ben Bell has told CasualGaming.biz.
With the release of The Sims 3 less than a month away, you might be expecting to see pre-order listings already appearing at retail for the inevitable influx of expansions that are bound to follow. But the wait might be longer than you think.

Unfortunately, it seems that the death of 3D Realms was the best way for us to get our hands on the largest collection of Duke Nukem Forever screens we've ever seen, and now, footage of the game in action. Found on ex-3D Realms employee Bryan Brewer's personal website (found after the break due to its NSFW-ness), we're treated to the ubiquitous pig cops (now with the ability to jump and climb, apparently) as well as a variety of Duke vulgarities you likely won't want your mother to hear.
If anything, the footage proves that a ton of different gameplay was actually finished and -- we're not gonna lie here -- looks pretty decent. We didn't spot any jetpack totin' reptilian enemies unfortunately, but we can only presume the folks at 3D Realms were waiting until the last possible minute to show off such nostalgia laden insanity. Wait, isn't right now the last possible minute?

BioWare has declassified data on the Trooper class that'll be fighting alongside the Jedi in its upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO. Yes, as you can see on the class' data page, they do look surprisingly similar to the troopers who fought in the Clone Wars -- but hey, those were wicked cool, so we'll just be thankful for this tweaking of pre-film canon.
As BioWare describes them, the Trooper is an elite special forces element of the Republic's military, a.k.a. a good guy. They're evidently highly effective at close-quaters combat, carry sticky grenades and have access to numerous enhancements for their standard "modern rifle." That and myriad armor variations that will boggle any fanboy's mind. Check out these bad boys (and girls, hopefully) in motion at the official site.
