Acclaim announced today that it's going to begin letting people into the closed beta for the fantasy MMO Chronicles of Spellborn. The first 200-500 players who are going to receive access will be "handpicked from the Acclaim chats, David Perry's Twitter and Historian's beta tester list." After that Acclaim will begin activating 1000 new accounts every hour, giving first preference to Acclaim members and then extending a random lottery to Acclaim's entire user base. Beta slots will be closed once Acclaim has reached an unspecified number of players. Hopeful players can check their status on their account summary page at the Acclaim website.
When released at retail, Spellborn will be a "freemium" game. That term, which is as ridiculous as it is terrible, merely indicates that the game will have a free component as well as lots of content that requires subscription.
Players who want to hit the ground running when they receive access to the beta can start downloading the client now directly from the Acclaim website.

Looks like the Parvus wrist computer we last saw almost three years ago has received an upgrade. The Zypad WR1100 is a 3.5-inch color touchscreen device aimed at the defense industries, soldiers of fortune (who, surprisingly enough, make a large part of our readership), futuristic Boy Scouts, and anyone else who needs a Linux device strapped to their wrist. Aside from a high strength / low weight fiberglass-reinforced nylon-magnesium alloy housing designed to take a licking in the field, this wrist-worn bad boy rocks 256MB memory, 128MB flash storage, various connectivity options (including WiFi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee), a GPS, a compass, biometric fingerprint sensor, and an accelerometer that puts the system in standby when the arm is hanging down beside the body. Let us take a moment to ponder the irony of the inevitable Quake mod this device will certainly see at some point in the near future.

After hearing of the thousands (hell, two thousands!) of bug fixes and enhancements that Windows 7 users will be seeing as they make the journey from Beta to Release Candidate, you'd have thought that we'd heard the last of all that for a bit. But not so! It seems that Microsoft's own Engineering Windows 7 blog will be letting the improvements trickle out as they are addressed. So brace yourself for some exciting plot twists, such as improvements to the taskbar thumbnail overflow and various jump lists, the trimming of sound schemes to enhance system performance, and our personal favorite, the addition of multitouch zoom to Windows Explorer. How cool is that? But there's plenty more to this saga -- hit the read link for all the saucy deets.

Well, it looks like high-end gaming PC manufacturers are now well and truly on board the 3D bandwagon, with CyberPower only the latest to toss out a couple of systems bundled with some 3D glasses and the necessary hardware to back 'em up. As is their nature, CyberPower is offering both Intel and AMD-based options in the form of the Gamer Xtreme 3D 1000 and Gamer Xtreme 3D 2000, the former of which packs a 2.66GHz Core i7-920 processor, while the later opts for a Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition triple-core CPU. Otherwise, you can expect to get NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 graphics on each, along with a bundled 22-inch Samsung Syncmaster 2233RZ 120Hz LCD monitor, 3D Vision stereoscopic glasses, and some expectedly high-end specs across the board, with the Core i7 rig edging out the AMD in most respects. That also includes price, of course, with the Intel-based system running $1,839, while the AMD-based rig will set you back a more reasonable $1,299.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3: Uprising is now available. and EA has released this helpful video detailing the Yuriko campaign, which turns the real-time strategy title into a dungeon crawler. By far the most interesting addition is the Yuriko campaign, which follows the story of the little psychic Japanese girl who was kidnapped as a child and experimented on by Japanese scientists. The player controls Yuriko as she attempts to escape from her captors. As Red Alert 3 story and cinematics producer Mical Pedriana explains, it's more like a dungeon crawler than a traditional real-time strategy game, pitting a lone unit against multiple enemies. It's nice to see a developer doing something so different in an expansion, rather than just tossing more of what we've already played through.

The Opposable Thumbs blog reports that World of Warcraft's most recent expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, is not being allowed into the Chinese market. The Escapist brings further details, saying, "According to an insider, two specific shortcomings included the presence of skeleton characters and a 'city raid.' Nor did the submitted version contain the starting area for the game's new Death Knight class." The Chinese version of World of Warcraft has been modified in the past to remove skeletons and zombies.

Windows 7's Browser Option is a Win for Users
Leaked post-beta versions of Windows 7 and watchful bloggers let an interesting cat out of the bag late last week: Microsoft is allowing users to remove Internet Explorer 8 and other applications from Windows 7.
Initially, Microsoft refused to discuss the Windows 7 "kill switch", saying only that it could not comment on unreleased products. But the company followed the next day with a post on its Engineering Windows 7 blog listing the applications that can be switched off. These include Internet Explorer 8, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center and Windows Search.
Hovering over Microsoft's decision is a January filing by the European Union's antitrust agency stating that Microsoft protects Internet Explorer from head-to-head competition by bundling it with Windows. Microsoft wrote in a filing with the SEC that it may become "a requirement that OEMs distribute multiple browsers on new Windows-based PCs."
With antitrust fines from the EU piling up and more on the way for previous Windows sales dating back to the mid 1990's, Microsoft may be extending an olive branch to the EU by enabling the removal of IE8, analysts say. Microsoft has made no official comment on whether there is a correlation between shutting off IE8 and the EU charges.
Veteran tech analyst Rob Enderle, president of research firm The Enderle Group, says that Microsoft should be credited for giving users more choice, but "it also serves to get EU regulators off their back ... and there's no indication that Microsoft would have gone down this path had this not been part of the EU requests."
Microsoft bloggers and columnists are calling the option to remove applications in Windows 7 a long-overdue compromise from Microsoft, regardless of its true motivations.
Microsoft Watch blogger Joe Wilcox recently wrote that although the permission to remove more applications is a reaction to the EU charges, it's also in keeping with Microsoft's vow to keep Windows 7 more flexible.
"Microsoft has done right by expanding the list [of applications that can be removed] and including some resource-hogging programs in the process. There are many businesses that won't need all these features on their PCs, so why have binaries and services running and consuming valuable system resources?"
Enderle adds: "It forces Microsoft to keep their eye on assuring all of the components are competitive and not to simply rely on the bundle dragging along increasingly inferior offerings. Better parts lead to a better solution and a better solution is always better PR."
The only potential downside: by giving users more flexibility to remove applications you are adding complexity and the chance for problems that cause the PC to misbehave. "And on Windows, Microsoft takes the heat for breakage regardless of who is really at fault," Enderle says.
But overall, he says, the decision to give users more choice "is a positive for Microsoft, however they got there."

Seriously, who doesn't like skeletons? Well, the Chinese government, as it's citing "skeleton characters" and a "city raid" as two primary reasons for the million World of Warcraft players in China still not receiving Blizzard's latest expansion.
JLM Pacific Epoch reports the Chinese government "has rejected two applications by the second expansion for World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King since China's Spring Festival (January 25 - February 1)." Considering Blizzard has removed "skeleton characters" from WoW in the past and the supposedly gold farmer-free million plus player count for WoW in China, we're willing to bet Blizzard (and its licensing partner in China, The9) will find a way to release Wrath of the Lich King yet.
But seriously China, what's your deal with skeletons?

This is one of those stories you're either going to really care about or be utterly ambivalent to, so just hang in there with us, OK? Reports indicate that the voice actors who played Jim Raynor and Kerrigan in the original StarCraft are being replaced in the sequel, the news of which was apparently the equivalent of dropping -- is there a really big bomb in StarCraft? If so, it was like dropping that on the SC fan community.
As you can see here, every tool in the fanboy arsenal from petitions to YouTube videos are being deployed. Hoping to get in on the fun, we put the question to you, the Joystiq Biomass:
Do you care about a change in voice-over actors for StarCraft 2?
What? No, of course I don't care!
I couldn't care less.
I'm actually kind of stunned that, with everything happening in the world, anyone can care about this.
You ... you're joking, right?
Of course I care! Also, I'm Robert Clotworthy/Glynnis Talken.
