Blizzard has updated the official Diablo III website with a set of four bits of artwork and five new screens, one featuring an opponent that could even the bravest player pee a little.
We've seen quite a bit of Diablo III since the game was announced, so when I was first flipping through the new art I wasn't all that impressed, until I came to that one particular screenshot. That gigantic thing who stole a pair of Voldo's hand weapons from Soulcalibur? Yeah. That's one big sonofabitch, and knowing Blizzard he probably isn't the toughest foe we'll face by far. Sure it isn't as dark as the previous two titles, but hell - you couldn't see most of that guy if the sides of the screen were dimmed, and he's definitely a critter you'd want to keep your eye on.
Update: Now I'm told the big guy has already appeared in gameplay clips, but his size remains the same.

The first expansion pack for Will Wright's "everything sim," Spore, is slated for release this spring, according to -- of all things -- an invitation to its debut event. Called Spore Galactic Adventures, the pack is evidently just one part of an entire line-up of Spore tie-ins/spin-offs EA and Maxis are planning for 2009.
Judging by its title, the pack will expand on Spore's galactic end-game, widely considered to be the sim's most engaging stage. As for what those other Spore titles could be, we'll take your suggestions (sorry, we've already called Spore: ODST!) in comments.

Don't count the filthy Reds out yet, as Electronic Arts has detailed Uprising, an upcoming expansion to Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. The add-on will send players back to the front lines with a new single-player campaign, new units and a greater quantity of live-action cutscenes, just in case the original's love affair with camp left you wanting more.
Uprising will also include a new mode, dubbed 'Commander's Challenge', which will allow players to test their strategic skills across 50 different stages with different rules and conditions. However, while Red Alert 3 is available for the Xbox 360 and a PS3 version should arrive ... someday ... only those playing on computers will be able to come away with bragging rights. Uprising will be a PC exclusive when it is released as a digital download in March.

The wait is over, folks. Sir Steve Ballmer has announced the availability of Windows 7 Beta and Windows Live here at his CES keynote. The official word is this: "The beta version of Windows 7, Microsoft's next-generation PC operating system, can be downloaded today by MSDN, TechBeta and TechNet customers. Consumers who want to test-drive the beta will be able to download it beginning January 9 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows7." Moreover, Windows Live -- described as "a free suite of communications and sharing applications that make it easy for people to communicate, share and keep their online lives in sync and in one place with one login -- is now globally available. Oh, and did we mention that January 9th is this Friday? Huzzah

Market research company NPD Group has released its list of best-selling PC games for the week of December 21 – 27, 2008. Ever since it debuted, Blizzard's World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, rose to the top of the sales charts; this past week was no different. Following behind in second place during the week of Christmas was The Sims 2 Double Deluxe. While this week remains very similar to the prior week, Activision's Call of Duty: World at War did drop and swap places with The Sims 2 Apartment Life.

After two and a half years of intense work, Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn release a sigh of relief: their little baby is ready to see the light of day. The Path is a gloomy interactive exploration in realtime 3D of the fairy tale of Little Red Ridinghood set in the present day. And now, just as the new year has begun, the production has achieved beta stage. A release date will be revealed soon.
"We have not fully recovered from those final six months of crunching yet. But when we see what we have created, we can't help but feel pride and joy. We live together as a couple, and we work together day in and day out. Long days, working until the small hours, for months and months on end. We wouldn't recommend it. And we may never do it again. But we have done it now! And we are glowing like fresh parents: The Path is great and wonderful! Anyone who disagrees is dead."
The first time The Path was introduced to the public was at the Game Developers Conference of 2007, when a teaser video was released. One year later, a "vertical slice" playable demo of the game was selected for the Independent Games Festival 2008 -and another videoclip was released, containing gameplay footage. The following nine months -briefly interrupted by the release of the controversial art/non-game The Graveyard- were dedicated to expanding the demo to a full game, with the aid of animator Laura Raines Smith, composer Jarboe, sound designer Kris Force and technical artist Hans Zantman.
In the mean time, fabulous graphic designer Marian Bantjes created a new hand-drawn logo, which is being revealed now to celebrate the occasion. You'll find a desktop wallpaper with the new logo and an animated version on the game's website. http://Tale-of-Tales.com/ThePath Expect more graphics to be revealed throughout the month.
Further progress in the production -we're not entirely done yet- continues to be reported on in the development journal: http://Tale-of-Tales.com/ThePath/blog
The Path is being created with the support of Creative Capital, Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, the Flemish Authorities, Villanella and Design Vlaanderen.
Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn have been working together since 1999, when they met in an online artists community and promptly decided to merge their lives and businesses (entropy8.com and zuper.com became entropy8zuper.org -as was the style of the times). Auriea left New York to live with Michael in Belgium, from where they still run their global operations. In 2003, the couple swapped web sites for video games as their primary artistic medium and founded Tale of Tales. Their main game projects are 8, a unreleased dreamy exploration game based on Sleeping Beauty, The Endless Forest, a multiplayer screensaver in which you play a deer, and The Graveyard, a very short game about an elderly lady who visits a cemetery (nominated for Innovation in this year's Independent Game Festival). Now joined by The Path, their biggest project to date.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King topped the final PC chart of 2008 in the US as the pre-Christmas influence of standalone triple A titles continued to wane.
Expansions for the Sims 2 saw gains with Double Deluxe taking second place, Apartment Life sitting in fifth and Mansion & Garden Stuff in ninth.
Meanwhile Spore was third, followed by Left 4 Dead in fourth place, Fallout 3 in sixth and Call of Duty: World at War in seventh.
The World of Warcraft Battle Chest took eighth position, with Bejeweled Twist rounding out the top ten.
The list was therefore dominated by Electronic Arts, responsible for half of the entries, while Activision Blizzard took three, and Bethesda and PopCap one apiece.
The full list is as follows:
1. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
2. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe
3. Spore
4. Left 4 Dead
5. The Sims 2 Apartment Life
6. Fallout 3
7. Call of Duty: World at War

With Sierra's Tribes 2 going offline last year, online service TribesNext has revitalized the multiplayer shooter by recreating the game's net code. The service is free and is currently undergoing its open beta stage.
Tribes 2 was originally released in 2001 and was made free in 2004; however, after it went free, Sierra stopped distributing CD keys for the game. TribesNext alleviates this problem by doing away with CD keys.
To get into the open beta, visit Tribesnext.com.

We're posting these new StarCraft II screens (we count six) with much reservation. After all, someone out there woke up this morning with no intention to die. But, having seen these new depictions of war-waging micro machines, this someone has triggered an inescapable obsession. Our friend will sit and stare until the eyes bleed, the throat dries and the body wavers. Eventually, this poor soul will keel over and, yes, drop dead. The doctors will call it many things: dehydration, exhaustion, heart failure. But we know the true cause. Love.

CCP's space MMO, Eve Online, has reached a milestone by reaching out to 45,186 concurrent players.
The videogame publisher was excited about the milestone and a CCP representative wrote on the game's web site, "it is truly a testament to our loyal fans that 5 years into EVE's existence we are still breaking records and more people are flying in New Eden than ever before."
Over the course of the years, CCP has made tremendous serverside changes to the game's infrastructure. Gamasutra reports that "The game now features a player-driven democratic society via its elected Council of Stellar Management, and an elaborate in-game economy watched over by former real-world economist Dr. Eyjolfur Gudmundsson."

You might've heard that crazy rumor making the rounds that Microsoft leaked the Windows 7 beta on purpose to build some positive buzz, and while there's no real evidence (or likelihood) of that of any sort, the seemingly-magical build 7000 is certainly doing well for itself. Following up on wide praise for the fledgling OS, ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes pitted the beta up against XP and Vista in some informal "real-word" tasks like boot up, shut down, file maneuvers, installations and other common tasks. On both test systems, an AMD Phenom 9700 setup and an Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2200 number (with ATI and NVIDIA graphics, respectively), the Windows 7 install soundly bested XP and Vista task by task, with few exceptions. Performance testing is never an exact science, but it's clear that Microsoft is taking performance very seriously this time around -- we can't wait for the next conveniently-leaked beta to bolster this rep even further. Next on the benchmarking agenda? Real World: Brooklyn tasks.
