Sorry folks -- we know that you were looking forward to a future of "pay to play" computing, but it seems that Microsoft's application has been soundly dissed by the patent office. Reasons for the decision include the company's "occasional use of fuzzy terminology" and the fact that much of this stuff has already been patented. Of course, the decision can be appealed -- but for the time being, if you still want to pay monthly for a computer AT&T has a netbook for you.

Dreamspike Studios has announced the release of the Official Demo of Space War Commander, their new real-time strategy game. It can be download from their web site at www.dreamspike.com.
Space War Commander is a new take on the strategy genre, avoiding base-building and micromanagement in favor of new game elements never before seen in an RTS. For example, you can take advantage of supply and demand in a galaxy, transporting goods between planets. Of course, you can also travel to contested territories, hunt enemy ships, and sell their hulls for scrap. Finally, why not buy fast ships to outrun pirates and lead them to your opponent's base?
Space War Commander is different because you have a limited amount of money with which to buy ships. As a result, you need to really think about makeup of your hand-picked force and what to do with it. Are you going to buy massive Destroyers and fight for control of valuable planets? Or will you invest in Bombers and attempt to surgically strike your enemy where it is most vulnerable? Every ship is vital. Every decision is important. In Space War Commander, it's Your Mind Against the Universe.

When Blizzard revealed that it was splitting StarCraft II into three separate products, we grumbled. Who wouldn't? But we've come to terms with it, especially since the Terrans get first shot at the story.
StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder tells 1UP that while the Terran single-player campaign — over two-dozen missions strong instead of then StarCraft-standard ten — is playable the others "are definitely not in a playable state."

Yes, Virginia, there's a leaked copy of Windows 7 beta floating around, and if you aren't the type to "break the law" and check it out yourself, the folks at Tech Cast News have made for you a picture-laden walkthrough of the installation process and some of the OS's new features, including Alt+Tab doppelganger Aero Peek, the icon-only Taskbar interface, and the Smart Folder-esque Libraries. Overall, they found the beta a major improvement over Vista and predict the final release will put Microsoft in consumers' good graces again. Here's hoping that apparent January beta release comes to fruition so we can sweep that other OS under the rug a little bit faster.

Boy, World of Warcraft can get pricey. You pay for the game, you pay a monthly stipend, you pay for expansion packs. So it's nice to hear of a charity that's giving away a lifetime subscription.
If you donate $25 or more to the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society, you'll be in the running to score a free lifetime pass for the game, courtesy of Blizzard employee Katherine Allen, who's running an online fundraiser for the group. That means no more money spent on WoW subscriptions. Ever.
When that winner is chosen, three further charitable folks who made a donation will also be picked, each of whom will receive a free 12-month pass to the game.
Instructions on how to donate/enter at the link below.

December 30th, 2008, 14:27 Posted By: wraggster
Valve will officially reveal downloadable content for Left 4 Dead, its November-released zombie shooter, "shortly." During a video podcast with Kotaku (via Shacknews), one of the game's writers, Chet Faliszek, confirmed that Valve is working on new scenarios, "What we want to do is just deliver more content you can play at this point."
Faliszek also revealed that Valve has plans on incorporating the Versus mode to the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns. Currently, only Blood Harvest and No Mercy are playable in Versus.
In addition, the game writer said that, unlike Team Fortress 2 updates, Valve plans on releasing Left 4 Dead DLC for the Xbox 360 and PC platforms at the same time.
During the podcast, which was recorded on December 15, Faliszek speculated that the game's DLC announcement may come before Christmas. That, however, did not happen. Faliszek did state that announcement delays may happen as a result of the company's press guys going on vacation. However, he added, "We'll have an announcement shortly, I don't know exactly when."
Typically, PC versions of Valve releases receive free updates through Steam, the company's popular digital-distribution service, but no official pricing plans for either PC or Xbox 360 platforms have been announced. IGN has attempted to reach Valve for additional DLC details.

Heavily subsidized computers are hardly a new idea, as evidenced by the number of carriers now offering "free" netbooks, but a recently revealed patent application indicates that Microsoft might be thinking about taking the idea a few steps further. Apparently, the company is at least toying around with the idea of offering a computer with "scalable performance level components" and selectable software, which sounds somewhat similar to the "managed PC" that Microsoft developed with Korea's KT telecom a few years back. That would effectively let users only pay for the features that they used, with some added graphics performance or storage space simply a few bucks an hour away, as helpfully illustrated above. To prevent folks from "unlocking" the PC, each computer would also come equipped with a security module and metering agent that locks the PC to a particular supplier, and presumably offers up a whole host of other restrictions. Of course, this is a Microsoft patent application and, as we've seen, that hardly assures an actual product.

As one of three PVP systems in Angels Online, the Holy Battlefield, from the newest expansion, offers players even more PK fun. Players can PK freely here and capture materials just like in the Outpost Battlefield and the Totem Battle systems. Today, the Angels Online team is talking about Holy Battlefield in m ore detail.
When the new expansion "The Lost Atlantis" was released, Holy Battlefield became available to all players. Different from the Totem Battle, it is held on an appointed map and all participants are randomly divided into two groups. That means players from different factions can fight shoulder to shoulder. Not only guilds but also newbie players who haven't joined any guild can take part in this event. The Angels Online team will be holding the Holy Battlefield four times each week.
Sign-up
During the 15 minutes before the event starts, players must go find the NPC Battle Angel in the four cities and then be teleported to the Sign-up Office. They can sign up to take part in the event from the Holy Battlefield Clerk. The Clerk will randomly divide all participants into the two armies and teleport them to their relative Rebirth Preparation Area.
About the Battle
The system announcement will announce the start of battle. Players from different armies can then freely PK. Remember, it is better for players to make a complete battle plan while they are enjoying the PK. Only the army who captures the most crystals can win the battle.
About Points
1. Kill an enemy: Each player can earn points by killing enemies.
2. Destroy a City Gate: City Gates are the main fortification on the battlefield. Players should work together to destroy the opponent army's City Gates and earn the corresponding points.
3. Destroy a Statue: Each army possesses 25 Statues. If these statues can be destroyed, then there are a lot of points to be earned.
Also, in order to earn more points, production players can increase their army's defense by building City Gates and Statues. Crystals will be captured if these defensive structures are destroyed. So each production player in the battlefield should try collecting materials and building defensive structures. The Holy Battlefield means fun for everyone!
In Holy Battlefield, players from the winning army can obtain abundant exp as reward. Don't worry! Players can still obtain exp according to their point totals, even if they are not a winner.
For more information about the Holy Battlefield visit: http://ao.igg.com/act/glory/.

Bioware recently released a veritable cornucopia of visual media for their upcoming midi-chlorian-infused MMO, The Old Republic. There's plenty of eye candy to go around between the eight new pieces of concept art and eight new screenshots, giving diehard Warsies an impressive look at some of the far, far away environs featured in the game. You can check out the official site for further details about each image -- not that you don't already know all there is to know about Imperial Sensor Arrays and Republic Troop Transports.
