Rockstar has released a second patch for Grand Theft Auto IV, which is 32MB and can be downloaded from the publisher's website.
According to Rockstar, the patch adds new graphics sliders for water and shadow quality, and reflection resolution, along with "definition" and "vsync" toggles, so you can further tailor the game's visuals to fit your hardware.
However, there's a problem with some controllers, apparently. "As a result of the patch we had to disable the default setting for direct input device support," Rockstar explained. "To reactivate your supported gamepad simply enter the command line, '-usedirectinput'."
The patch site has more details on which pads and steering wheels are supported.
"The patch also addresses a variety of issues including, but not limited to, graphical optimisation; bugs introduced with the release of patch 1; multiplayer and video editor fixes; and security updates," the publisher said.
"We want to thank the GTA community for your continued support as we continue to improve GTAIV PC so that it is the best experience possible."
Despite happy old reviews around the time of launch, GTAIV PC suffered from stability issues and other errors that prevented some gamers from even playing it.

El Segundo, Calif.- Jan 26, 2009 OGPlanet, a publisher of massively multiplayer online games, today announced the Nevareth Arcade System for its popular MMORPG, CABAL Online. This system, referred to as NAS for short, acts like a capsule machine, adding a fun spin to the game.
To play NAS, players must purchase or win Silver or Bronze Tickets that can be redeemed for Medals. Each spin costs 10 Cabal Medals and is guaranteed to result in a useful in-game item, but some lucky winners will receive each month's special items. At launch, grand-prize winners can receive the dark Epaulette of Night Walkers, the cool Hip Hop Spirit costume, or even a Little Gry pet!
"The Nevareth Arcade System is going to be a huge addition to CABAL," explained Chris Woolley, CABAL Online's Associate Producer. "The system itself is fun, plus you are guaranteed to get a great item to use in-game. I think our players will really enjoy NAS."
About CABAL Online
In CABAL Online, players are called upon to protect the people of Nevareth from an evil entity known as Cabal. Set in a diverse environment that includes ice temples, forgotten ruins, desert hideaways, mutant forests and volcanic citadels, CABAL engages players with dynamic quests that tie-in beautifully to the game's storyline and more than 300 dungeons to explore. CABAL includes both Player vs. Environment and Player vs. Player gameplay, with some servers designated specifically for PvP combat, and a unique Player Kill system.
CABAL Online can be downloaded at http://cabal.ogplanet.com/.

War Plan Pacific, the acclaimed wargame from developer KE Studios and publisher Shrapnel Games, has now been patched to version 1.0.1.0123. The patch not only shoots down the dreaded Model 99 Bug but enhances the overall gameplay experience.
The patch includes the following fixes/additions to the full retail version of War Plan Pacific:
Bugs
If an invasion fleet without carriers attacked a base without any defending aircraft (either carrier or land based) the invasion would silently fail. Fixed.
Saving and reloading on turn 1 no longer provides the Japanese extra SNLF groups.
Task Force mission text now updates if transport groups are added or removed (changes from Raid to Invasion and vice-versa).
Occasionally "ghost" patrol icons would remain even after all patrols were cancelled. Gamers no longer have to be spooked by these, as this has been fixed.
Spelling errors in scenario files fixed.
Enhancements
Music and Sound now support three levels: Full (louder setting for those playing using laptop speakers), Quiet and Off.
Added extra feedback for base growth. Now bases will show a lighter colored segment of their size bar to indicate growth during the previous turn. Note: this only appears during single player games to maintain compatibility between versions for multiplayer.
The Allied AI has received several boosts. It is slightly less aggressive in raiding the Home Islands, more aggressive in reopening the Sea Lanes, and not as static during the first turn.
Increased reaction moves. Task forces on patrol can now respond to action up to 72 hours sailing time, instead of the one day limit in the initial release. The reaction limit can also now be changed in the scenario file. In multiplayer games both players must have patched to the latest version or the mechanic will default to the original one day limit.
War Plan Pacific is a computer wargame for the Windows operating system developed by Seattle based developer KE Studios. Released last month War Plan Pacific has already earned kudos from Out of Eight reviews, IGN, Flash of Steel, Cyberstratege and the tough Usenet crowd.
In War Plan Pacific one or two players battle for control of the Pacific during the Second World War, beginning with the opening surprise assaults by the forces of Imperial Japan on the Western Allies. Commanding air and naval units (ground combat is abstracted through invasions) players wage war with a variety of objectives in mind. As the Allies strangle Japan's resources or bomb them into submission after an island hopping campaign. For the Japanese player survive long enough for the Allied public to grow weary of battle or force a delay of American forces that tilts the conflict into an assured victory.
While play encompasses the Pacific from Singapore to San Francisco, using a historical order of battle, one of War Plan Pacific's greatest strengths is its single session games. A typical game only takes a few hours to play, making it ideal for weeknight gaming or multiplayer sessions.
The version 1.0.1.0123 patch can be downloaded from the official War Plan Pacific games page.
War Plan Pacific is only $39.95 and comes in two flavors: on CD in a DVD case for those who prefer a physical product and a digital download if you'd prefer to go that route. And unlike other naval wargames War Plan Pacific features no intrusive DRM scheme.

While Bioware's MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic was already 20 times better than Star Wars Galaxies for the simple reason that it isn't SWG, these new screenshots certainly don't hurt.
Of course massively multiplayer online roleplaying game screenshots always look a great deal better than the actual game winds up looking, because unless you are a developer playing under controlled conditions you have to deal with lag, your own outdated PC hardware, and the pile of discarded soda cans cluttering up your desk.
The shots actually remind me of a graphically updated version of Funcom's Anarchy Online, which is a game near and dear to my heart, so that works even more in Bioware's favor. Hell, if Funcom won't release a new AO, someone might as well

You don't have to tell the crew of people painstakingly piecing together Mario Kart: Source that there's a much easier way to play Mario Kart games on PCs. Sure, they could fire up an emulator and play Mario Kart 64 and it would be just like it was way back when ... but where's the challenge in that? What they could (and did) opt to do was take Half-Life 2's flexible Source Engine to create a Mario Kart mashup; the project manager says, "We're not simply recreating one version of MK, but using the best parts of each." It's a Franken-kart, if you will.
Eager to get a closer look at it? Peep the gallery we quickly threw together, or dig around the project's official site. Want to actually play the thing? Says the project manager: "As far as a public beta is concerned, we will not release anything until we are satisfied ..." Either that, or until Nintendo's army of well-paid lawyers shuts the entire project down.

Now that the Windows 7 beta is out, the benchmarks are coming fast and furious, and while 7's been previously found to best XP and Vista during "real-world" tasks, it looks like XP is still the outright speed champ on current hardware. That's at least the word according to InfoWorld, which pitted all three systems against each other in a suite of tests designed to suss out how each performed on modern multicore systems, and while we won't pretend to grok all the data, there's nothing complicated about the final results, which showed that "any illusions about Windows 7 somehow being leaner or more efficient than Vista can now be thrown out the window." Sure, there was some speedup -- 7 was 60 percent faster than Vista during the dual-core workflow tests -- but overall, 7's just slower on dual- and quad-core hardware than XP. However, there's a silver lining here: InfoWorld says the slowdown is in large part due to the extra code Vista and 7 use to manage multicore processors, and as the number of cores increase, the corresponding performance gains are much bigger than with XP since they can be used more efficiently. Of course, by the time we're all sitting pretty with 48-core Larrabee machines this all might be just a distant memory, so for right now we're just going to get back to installing the Windows 7 beta on anything we can find and reveling in the glory of perceived speedups.

When it was released earlier last year, Burnout Paradise set a new standard of vehicular mayhem, and Criterion Games increased the car carnage by supporting the game with additional content. According to Criterion's website, on February 6, the two latest packs for the game will be released to further improve the racing (and crashing) experience. The first pack is known as the Party Pack, and will allow you and up to seven other friends to play through stunt, speed and skill challenges to see who's the best racer in your group. Stunt challenges will involve jumps and tricks, while Speed challenges have quick time trials and time tests and Skill Challenges focus on racing through oncoming traffic and drifting. The Party Pack will be a premium pack, although no price was revealed on the website.
The second pack will be free, and will feature a large number of adjustments. The first is the inclusion of a Burnout Paradise Store, which will allow players to purchase any of the upcoming content for the game without having to back out of the game itself. This will include items like the Legendary Cars or Island packs when they become available.
Vehicles will receive a significant overhaul, making the handling on the earliest cars more accessible and easier to Burnout newcomers. This means these earlier cars will be harder to crash and harder to spin out, but will operate at a slower pace. What's more, players will be able to evaluate the cars that they have in the Junkyard, making it easier to choose the right car based on its stats. Cars will also naturally right themselves in the midst of a barrel roll if you hit a split ramp. The Stunt Run Timer has been adjusted to run slower, while the difficulty of all events in the game has been modified to take the new car speeds into effect.
Road Rage has received an overhaul, removing the time that's added whenever you hit the target number of cars. That will make it much harder for people to exploit the mode to rack up larger scores. Objects that you can interact with in the Burnout world have been redesigned, so Billboards will show up as Red, Smashes will be yellow and Super Jumps will be blue. These objects will also pulse, which should help you discover where they are and take advantage of them in the game.
Finally, a long awaited change is the inclusion of restarting an event. Previously, there was no way to immediately restart a race or event, forcing you to start all over from the beginning. That could be extremely inconvenient, especially if you'd made a mistake halfway across a city spanning race. Now, you no longer have to drive all the way back to the starting location. Instead, you'll instantly warp back to the start and leap back into the race. Finally, PS3 and PC players will discover an exclusive feature: an in-game browser that is designed to bring a new feature to the game known as the Criterion Games Network, which will be explained by Criterion Games next week.

Burda:ic, a publisher of online games worldwide, today released a major update for free-to-play MMORPG Florensia. Players are now able to venture into the mysterious towers that appeared last month, an imposing set of 100-floor dungeons that will challenge even the toughest adventurers.
Access to the towers is granted by Tower Masters who stand in the center of each town. These strange individuals have a number of quest scrolls on hand that reward players handsomely for taking risks, and they are quite happy to trade Imperial Gifts for the Military Crosses earned within the new dungeons.
On the sillier side of things, every player will receive one of six new headmounts as a gift to celebrate the upcoming launch of Florensia's Gacha system. The goofy headgear ranges small black cats to steaming bowls of noodles, all available for one week of adventuring. After that, you'll have to take a chance and spin the Gacha wheel if you want to look ridiculous!
For full details about the update and an in-depth preview of the new dungeons, visit http://www.florensia-online.com/.

Polite London-based indie developer Beatnik Games has announced that its first offering, robot-fixated Plain Sight, has reached open beta and, you know, why don't you have a go?
Plain Sight is a 3D multiplayer arcade explode-'em-up featuring bouncing, sword-wielding robots with a goal-orientated death wish. Here's how it works: the more people you kill, the more points you get; the more points you get, the bigger, stronger and better you become. The more people you annihilate when you detonate yourself, the higher the multiplier you receive. Mostest points at the end wins, innit?
You can download the open beta version of Plain Sight from the appropriate beta page on Beatnik Games' official website. Open beta servers will be available until February 8.
Plain Sight, in its final form, is set to arrive on PC early in 2009 for around 10 USD / 10 GBP. An Xbox 360 version is planned for later release.

You always wondered where to get games supported by ScummVM? Perhaps you were also asking, how I can help the project?
You could find the supported games either on our downloads page, or on our Where to buy games page on our Wiki. For helping the project we have had a PayPal button for some time.
But now you can reach both goals at the same time!
We are pleased to announce the start of an affiliate program with the excellent Good Old Games service, also known as GOG.com. Just click on their button on the sidebar and you will be brought to the site. Register there and buy some games. You will get your game, cheap, fast and legally, and the ScummVM project will get a share of the proceeds.
The main reason behind this is that GOG.com uses ScummVM for several of their offered titles. Currently they offer Broken Sword 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1, Simon the Sorcerer 2, Feeble Files, Waxworks, as well as some of the free games which we offer too. Each release is nicely pre-packaged with ScummVM, is DRM-free, goes for just $5.99, and the most important thing, is completely legal, as those folks chase the original rights holders.
Thus, watch their site, buy the games, and help our project.
PS: We will get the money only if you click on the provided button and register within a short period of time.

The release of yesterday's WOW patch hasn't gone as smoothly as Blizzard would have hoped, with headline changes not working properly, major player-versus-player game features disabled, and bugs and lag apparently worse than before.
WOW Insider has listed some of the issues, judging the patch a "disaster".
As we reported yesterday, the Wintergrasp PVP zone had to be disabled after it was found to crash the game servers. No sooner was this fixed than Arena battles had to be removed due to bugs in the ranking system.
The unavailability of account-wide Death Knight creation servers - one of the main features of the patch - is being fixed through rolling sever restarts. Several other changes and fixes in the patch are simply not working as intended, and animation issues appear to be rife.
To be fair, we didn't encounter any problems beyond a little lag in a heroic instance run last night - and we fully expect most of the complaints to have subsided within the week. Nonetheless, the pressure of expectation on the first substantial patch since the Wrath of the Lich King expansion launched was great. It seems that Blizzard has fallen some way short of the quality standards expected of it this time.

Late last week, readers may have seen that early, leaked footage of Star Wars Battlefront III was posted by IGN. This footage was an early concept of the game and is no confirmation that the game will be released. The clip has since been pulled from our sites after LucasArts requested that IGN.com removes it; citing that the videos are "the intellectual property of Lucasfilm and have been posted without permission." Stay tuned to IGN for any news on another entry in the Battlefront series.
