Frogster America today announced details surrounding a key tool in the game Runes of Magic, the Arcane Transmutor. There are many ways to upgrade Armor and Weapons in Runes of Magic (http://www.runesofmagic.com), but most of then require the aid of the Arcane Transmutor, a powerful and mysterious artifact.
Only basic recipes have been given to the players so far, but upgrading those recipes is now possible: for instance, with the aid of power stones, adventurers can extract attributes from magical items, which are then stored in mana stones. Cleverly combined, these mana stones can turn into increasingly powerful mana stones, which in turn are used to refine and improve weapons or armor, thus making them especially useful tools in the everlasting battle against the enemies of Taborea.
Also, runes important for improving equipment, can be transmuted in several ways. Five identical runes of the same rank can form a higher tiered and more powerful version of that same rune. Players are encouraged to experiment combining different runes and attributes to create their ideal rune.
While the possible combinations are countless, using the Arcane Transmutor does cost Transmutor Charges, which players have to accrue in order to benefit from the Transmutor. Phirius Tokens, a reward from daily quests, can be traded in for charges, while players that want to upgrade their items faster can purchase charges in the item shop.
However, the Arcane Transmutor will not freely reveal all of its secrets. But one thing is clear, it is a lot more powerful than it was thought to be. It is now up to adventurers to discover its inner workings.
Runes of Magic went into the open beta in December with English and German versions, and the company revealed that over 300,000 players had already entered the world. All interested players can now download the game for free at www.runesofmagic.com.

Online PC game publisher YNK Interactive announced an expansion to their MMORPG Rohan: Blood Feud, by adding a new dungeon, The Fire Temple Garden.
"The Fire Temple Garden is only a taste of what Rohan: Blood Feud has in store for 2009," said Kevin Yoon, Project Manager of YNK Interactive. "It is a special treat to our high level players who will surely enjoy the challenging quests we've implemented in the new dungeon."
The Fire Temple Garden is divided into four different regions, The Blazing Temple, The Ring of Flames, The Lamp of Flames, and Kasa's Tower. Access to these areas is obtained by completing a series of quests, which has been added along with The Fire Temple Garden. The 16 new quests are challenging and specifically designed for players who are level 80 or above.
The Fire Temple Garden came shortly after the opening of a new level at Rahkon Dungeon just six weeks prior. The positive feedback of the level addition from the players encouraged developers to add an entirely new dungeon for 2009, which is only the beginning to the Rohan: Blood Feud expansion into the new year.

People trading in salacious gossip have been counting on an update of the Mac mini for ages now, with most of the rumors centering on it making its appearance at Macworld. Well, the festivities came and went without a peep about the mini -- but that hasn't stopped the rumors from swirling.
The latest we're hearing is that the refresh will be built upon NVIDIA's new Ion platform, which houses a 9400M GPU -- the same graphics processor as the new unibody Macbooks -- and could mean an even minier mini than the one we already know. Tom's Hardware, the source of this newest rumor, also speculates on a March release date, though they're not guessing on the price just yet.

As the story goes, a representative for developer Vogster told TeamXbox earlier today that the Xbox 360 version of CrimeCraft had been canceled. The Unreal Engine 3-powered MMO shooter was first announced this past April and has largely slipped under the radar since.
Since its initial publication, a representative for Vogster has gotten in touch with various outlets, including Joystiq, to clarify the situation. According to the rep, a 360 version "was toyed with in early development but ... [we have] always planned on it being PC only at initial launch, with the potential for additional platforms down the road." Move along, folks, nothing to see here.

Some great ScummVM News, heres the details:
The developers of ScummVM are pleased to announce that as of today, the classic game Discworld has full support for James Woodcock's Music Enhancement Project within the developers build. The project started way back in January 2006 as James Woodcock committed himself to use the original MIDI files from various Point and Click Adventure titles, creating enhanced versions using modern MIDI equipment. He has already released the Simon the Sorcerer version and can now add Discworld to his completion list:
"I have tried very hard to remain faithful to the originals in respect to the excellent composers creations..." says James Woodcock, creator of the ScummVM Music Enhancement Project. He continues "...There has been a lot of support and interest from Discworld fans, who have been monitoring its progress very carefully and it is with great pleasure I can finally play Discworld using new versions of the original soundtrack with many thanks to the developers of ScummVM for all their hard work in making this feature possible".
James uses the Yamaha Tyros2 keyboard hooked up to his computer via USB and after going through various tweaking, recording and editing, a finalised music track is born.
With permission from legendary author Terry Pratchett himself, the Discworld enhanced soundtrack (version 2.0) will be released in full and compatible with ScummVM in the future when hopefully we expect the freeware version of the game will be made available to the public to enjoy all over again.

The classic adventure game Zork is back, this time in the form of a browser-based casual MMO Legends of Zork, published by Ireland-based Jolt Online Gaming.
The Great Underground Empire is in ruins, FrobozzCo International has implemented massive layoffs, and a newly unemployed traveling salesmen sets off in search of treasure and adventure in this upcoming rebirth of the classic franchise from Jolt Online Gaming.
“As a complete Zork geek, I’m very proud to be releasing this title”, stated Dylan Collins, CEO of Jolt Online gaming. “Anyone who plays MMOs will definitely like to spend some time with Legends of Zork while they’re taking a break or browsing around the web. It’s very addictive”.
While i am always skeptical about a classic property in new hands, the fact that the picture of the Grue that accompanied the release gives me hope. Be sure to sign up at www.legendsofzork.com to be alerted when the game goes live.

Microsoft has pushed out its first patch for the Windows 7 public beta. The update saves your MP3s from a rather nasty bug that trims seconds off any song that's been edited, either by you or via automatic updates from Windows Media Player. If you've got afflicted files, there's a chance they're salvageable via properties window, according to the patch notes -- and if not, then here's hoping you backed up your library. Additionally, a new update has gone out to Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Server 2003 / 2008 that fixes some vulnerabilities in the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Beta users won't get their fix until the next public release, explains Microsoft Security Response Team's Christopher Budd, since it's only considered a "moderate" risk for the new OS.

Dead or Alive star Holly Valance has joined the eclectic cast of Red Alert 3. The Australian actress will appear in the game's recently announced expansion, Uprising.
According to Eurogamer.net, Valance will play Brenda Snow, a news journalist. "She's investigating a research facility that might be doing some dodgy business, and thinks perhaps the president's involved," Valance told the European gaming site.
The Red Alert real-time strategy games were always known for their tongue-in-cheek humor; Valance, firmly aware of that, said, "It's a camp, over-dramatized character, it's not too serious. It was fun to go a little bit over the top."

You can catch the blonde bombshell in action when Uprising launches this March.

Relic Entertainment's Mark Noseworthy has confirmed with Joystiq that the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 closed beta will begin January 21st if you purchased the original Dawn of War expansion, Soulstorm. Procrastinators, take note: you'll be introduced into the public beta just a week later on January 28th. Or, break the cycle of lethargy and pick up the expansion in order to grab an early beta spot.
We got a closer look at Dawn of War 2 during CES, and fans of real-time strategy games will not be disappointed ... unless you don't own a PC (but c'mon, how could you be an RTS buff without owning a PC?). Dawn of War 2 will be a PC-only release with Games for Windows Live features like voice chat and Achievements.

Funcom has revealed that its ailing MMO Age of Conan will reduce its server count from 49 to 18. The cuts are most dramatic in the US, where 25 servers have been hacked to six. GI.biz speculates that AoC won't be shut down because it's Funcom's only source of income until it launches The Secret World, allegedly releasing in the next couple years.
Although the server reductions have been anticipated since late last year, Funcom only recently announced the full list of closures mergers. Funcom also recently disposed of employees in its QA and customer service departments. The company isn't doing too hot with its Hyborian Adventures at the moment, but hopefully these changes will keep the company afloat until the Conan expansion's cash infusion arrives.

Good news, Windows 7 fanatics -- Microsoft has decided to nix that 2.5 million download limit in order to a) calm everyone down and b) enable its servers to relax just a wee bit. After the Windows 7 Beta download was launched, it took just hours to bring the servers to a screeching halt as consumers 'round the globe attempted to get in before the 2.5 million mark was hit. Now, however, the team has removed that barrier for the next fortnight (through January 24th, being that it was decided on Saturday) in effort to make the download experience more ideal. Crisis averted. Just in case you've forgotten how good it looks, we're including a gallery, and don't remember how much fun we've all had running it on the MacBook Pro and the VAIO P.

Those who wish to check out Windows 7, Microsoft's upcoming successor to Windows Vista, can now do so. The software giant on Friday posted the 32-bit and 64-bit beta versions of the OS. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the beta earlier this week during his keynote address at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The beta represents a work-in-progress, and the release of the final version hasn't been announced yet, though it is expected within a year. Windows 7 seeks to address many of the issues that consumers had with Windows Vista. Improvements have reportedly been made to speed and performance, particularly on machines with 512MB of RAM. Microsoft has also addressed the universally despised User Account Control system that annoyed users to no end.
The 64-bit version can be downloaded here, while the 32-bit version can be found found here. Both versions are ISO files, which means they must be burned to a DVD before you use can use them. The beta expires 30 days after installation unless you provide a software key from Microsoft.

Gamasutra is reporting that Eidos Interactive has lowered its previous financial estimates from $273 million-$303 million (£180-£200 million) down to $243 million-$273 million (£160 to £180 million) on reports that the sales of Tomb Raider: Underworld have been lower the company's internal forecasts. Even still, the publisher claims that it was "pleased" with Tomb Raider's sales in some European territories.
North America was the main problem area which Eidos blames on the massive economic downturn in the region. Eidos says that retailers were forced to restrain inventory levels and offer discounts to ensure that product moved off the shelves. Tomb Raider: Underworld has currently sold an estimated 1.5 million units worldwide.
Eidos stock, which is traded on the London Stock Exchange, fell as much as 25 percent in early morning trading from $26 (£17.25) a share to $19 (£12.75) a share. The company's stock has taken a dip of around 80 percent in the last 12 months.

Your time in the nuclear wasteland will increase thanks to plans that Bethesda Softworks has to raise the level cap in Fallout 3, its acclaimed post-apocalyptic role-playing game. Lead producer Jeff Gardiner told Eurogamer in an interview that the company will boost the level cap from 20 to 30 in the upcoming Broken Steel downloadable content pack, which is due out in March.
Broken Steel is the third DLC pack for the game. The first, Operation: Anchorage, is due out this month, and it will let players experience the liberation of Alaska from Chinese forces. The second DLC pack, the Pitt, is due out in February and will let players explore the remains of Pittsburgh. Due to an exclusivity deal, the DLC will only be offered for the Xbox 360 and Windows versions of the game. Operation: Anchorage will cost 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
In addition, Broken Steel will also remove the game's ending, meaning that once you finish the storyline you will be able to continue to adventure around the wasteland. Currently, once you finish the game the credits roll and that's it. By removing the ending, Bethesda will let you work your way toward building a level 30 character.

Being torn over which character design to pick for the Dark Templar class in the multiplayer portion of StarCraft 2, Blizzard Entertainment is allowing fans to decide. Over the next month, fans can choose between the Lenessa or Zer'atai designs. Blizzard is even allowing fans to choose a third option, which spawns a mixture of both. Official descriptions and pics are posted below:
"The first option represents the Lenassa tribe of dark templar, which made its debut in the original StarCraft. This unit carries a single warp blade, and a cloth shroud covers its face."
"The second option represents the Zer'atai tribe of dark templar, who wield dual scythes and wear an ensemble of heavy armor and the bones of slain zerg."

BioWare has announced that it will showcase Mass Effect 2, the sequel to its critically-acclaimed RPG, at this year's upcoming Game Developers Conference. The developer revealed on the gaming event's web site that it would discuss what it learned from the first game's level design and how the second game would improve upon the formula.
GDC will once again take place at San Francisco's Moscone Center. This year's event will be held from March 23 - 27. BioWare Project Manager Corey Andruko and BioWare Lead Technical Designer Dusty Everman will lead the 60-minute lecture. The session's official description is posted below:
"Session Description
This session examines the BioWare Mass Effect team's new level-creation process, which is focused on maximizing iteration for quality while minimizing rework and cost. This approach to building levels strives to integrate the Design, Art, and Production teams such that the highest-risk level-creation issues are addressed early in the development cycle. Lessons learned from Mass Effect lead to a detailed description of the new level-creation process, and graphical examples of a level illustrate its progression through the necessary phases. The discussion also examines how BioWare is currently implementing this process using elements of Scrum and Lean Development.
Takeaway
Attendees will: - Gain insight into some of the major issues the development team encountered while building Mass Effect at BioWare; - Get a detailed look at the Mass Effect team's new approach to creating levels while avoiding these issues; - Find out how this new process is working for the Mass Effect team; - Learn about new pitfalls the team discovered that can potentially be avoided on future game projects.
