The retail PC version of Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, released to stores this week, is entirely devoid of any DRM or copy-protection code according to Ubisoft community manager Chris "UbiRazz" Easton.
"A lot of people complain that DRM is what forces people to pirate games but as PoP PC has no DRM we'll see how truthful people actually are," said Easton in a post on the Ubisoft forums. "Not very, I imagine."
Easton later clarified that only the retail copies will be devoid of DRM: "I was purely talking about store-bought copies of PoP which have no copy protection."
Ubisoft faced two significant DRM-related backlashes this year. The PC port of Assassin's Creed was widely criticized for its DRM that apparently "phoned home," with some claiming that the copy-protection software was behind performance issues. In July, a patch that rendered the PC version of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 unusable saw Ubisoft releasing a no-CD crack, produced by a warez group, as an official fix.

BioWare has unleashed the first in-game footage from its upcoming Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic. Presented in documentary format, it's quite heavy on lightsaber dueling (thankfully with ones less chubby than those in the above screenshot).
The footage also shows a few brief glimpses of world traversal and combat against NPC creatures, including a K'lor'slug. Unfortunately, the video quality doesn't show off the game's visual nuances all that well, but LucasArts has told us that an HD version of the documentary will arrive on Monday, December 15.

Creative Assembly's Empire: Total War will be ready for release sometime in March 2009, according to publisher SEGA. The game marks the fifth major entry in the venerable strategy franchise, starting with Shogun: Total War in 2000. In addition to the series-standard mix of empire management and large-scale, real-time combat, Empire makes sea battles fully playable for the first time. The March release date was set in order to implement infrastructure for a multiplayer campaign.
"The extra development time will allow us to finalize and polish Empire, making it the most accomplished and epic of the Total War series." said Kieran Brigden, Studio Communications Manager at The Creative Assembly. "There is a great deal of anticipation around Empire: Total War and we want to ensure that it is the benchmark for strategy games upon its release."
Also according to SEGA, "An opportunity to participate in the one versus one multiplayer campaign mode beta will be made available to all who purchase Empire: Total War post release."

Have you ever got one of those annoying ads that claim your computer is infected? Well, the FTC has put a stop to the scam and the five anti-virus products involved.
The scam as described by the FTC:
According to the FTC’s complaint, the defendants used an elaborate ruse that duped Internet advertising networks and popular Web sites into carrying their advertisements. The defendants falsely claimed that they were placing Internet advertisements on behalf of legitimate companies and organizations. But due to hidden programming code that the defendants inserted into the advertisements, consumers who visited Web sites where these ads were placed did not receive them. Instead, consumers received exploitive advertisements that took them to one of the defendants’ Web sites. These sites would then claim to scan the consumers’ computers for security and privacy issues. The “scans” would find a host of purported problems with the consumers’ computers and urge them to buy the defendants’ computer security products for $39.95 or more. However, the scans were entirely false.
The products behind the scam are as follows: WinFixer, WinAntivirus, DriveCleaner, ErrorSafe, and XP Antivirus. Apparently, over a million people have been duped by the companies behind these products, and if you happen to be one of them, I highly suggest getting yourself a good, reliable program like the ones listed by Lifehacker.

The official Fallout 3 mod tools have just been released for the PC version of Bethesda's shooter.
The Garden of Eden Creation Kit, or 'G.E.C.K.', lets you edit and create game content for Fallout, including your own towns and dungeons populated with your own characters, creatures, items and stories, says Bethesda.
The developers also launched a massive G.E.C.K. website full of tutorials, so there's no excuse for making rubbish dungeons if you're going to give it a go.
Download the tools and have a gander at the guides over on Bethesda's G.E.C.K. website.

It's no secret that multi-touch support is one of the stand-out features of Windows 7, and it's also no surprise that plenty of companies seem eager to get in on the action, one of the latest which is uber-manufacturer Quanta Computer. Somewhat uniquely, however, Quanta is ditching the usual capacitive and resistive touch panels in favor of its new Optical Touch system, which simply uses two cameras placed at the top corners of the screen. That, Quanta says, still lets you perform all the usual multi-touch gestures in the same manner and, depending on the size of the display, could be significantly cheaper than a traditional touchscreen. Details on any actual products using the technology are expectedly a bit light at the moment, but Quanta says it plans to start mass production "soon," with some releases presumably planned to coincide with Windows 7's debut.

Federal Communications Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate has attributed Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft, and similar online videogames, as a leading cause behind college dropouts.
According to Gamepolitics.com, while addressing the Practicing Law Institute on telecom policy and regulation, Tate said, "With the explosion of educational resources available online, one might think parents would be 100% pleased with the internet's role in their children's lives. But surveys show just the opposite: a late 2006 survey that showed 59% of parents think the internet has been a totally positive influence in their children's lives-- down from 67% in 2004." The FCC commissioner added, "You might find it alarming that one of the top reasons for college drop-outs in the U.S. is online gaming addiction, such as World of Warcraft, which is played by 11 million individuals worldwide."
Tate did not, however, provide any specific scientific data to bolster her claim. Regardless, World of Warcraft's gameplay does have an addictive reputation. Many gamers have even paralleled the addiction to crack cocaine. According to Blizzard, Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft's recently released expansion, is currently the fastest-selling PC game of all time.

via Eurogamer
JoWooD has told Eurogamer that a patch to fix buggy Gothic 3 expansion Forsaken Gods will arrive "within this year", although it has been nearly two weeks since the original and quite severe problems were reported.
"At the moment our producers, the quality assurance teams and beta-testers are working under high pressure to create a satisfying and high quality patch for the game," JoWooD told us. "This update will be released within this year."
The company had to issue a public apology for the state of Forsaken Gods, and added today that "we might have released the game too early" in order to satisfy fans.
Naturally there are larger ramifications, such as what the state of Arcania - A Gothic Tale (Gothic 4) will be, coming from a series mired by the prevalence of bugs.
"That fear is comprehensible, but entirely unjustified," said JoWooD. "For Arcania - A Gothic Tale, we have implemented a better development process and quality assurance tools right from the beginning, which have simplified the continuous quality protection and will guarantee the correctness of this product.
"The collaboration with Spellbound, one of the best German development studios, is very professional.
"At this moment we can proudly state that the project is on track and in time," added the publisher.
Arcania - A Gothic Tale carries no release date, and is in development for PC and consoles, as the first of the series to be multiplatform. This will also be the first Gothic game created by Spellbound, as JoWooD and series regular Piranha Bytes fell out last year.
Piranha Bytes has since teamed with Deep Silver to work on a game called Risen, which follows the story of a man arriving at the foot of a mysterious volcano. Role-playing territory, we presume, but concrete details are scarce.

Yesterday, at an Electronic Arts conference call, EA CEO John Riccitiello hinted that BioWare's upcoming MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, would use microtransactions. However, today Shacknews received word from an EA representative that concluded otherwise. "No statements have been made about the Star Wars business model." The representative told the gaming news site that the microtransaction talks were simply a misunderstanding.
What spurred the microtransaction talks yesterday was this comment made by Riccitiello, "…for example [the] Star Wars online MMO, are mid-session games which are microtransaction-based." He added, "You'll be hearing more about those in the February [conference] call."
IGN has attempted to contact BioWare representatives for more clarification on the matter. We'll update you as soon as the news comes in.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare's upcoming MMO based on the Star Wars license, will use Simutronic's HeroEngine. Simutronics is known as one of the leading creators of online game development platforms.
The company's HeroEngine "provides a complete technology solution for MMO developers, which takes years off time to market by providing a streamlined creative pipeline and a complete toolset in an integrated turnkey solution," read an official statement.
"Our goal was to partner with a platform developer that knows online gaming and virtual world development, and the team at Simutronics has an excellent track record in that respect," said Gordon Walton, Co-studio Director at BioWare. He added, "Their HeroEngine was specifically created for building MMOGs and it allows for a great amount of flexibility in the way our entire team collaborates."
According to the official statement, "The unique collaborative design platform of the HeroEngine allows for development in real-time, enabling teams in different geographic locales to build the world and play the game live on the server simultaneously. Updates and changes to the game environment are instantaneous, negating the need for nightly builds and code crunching, which significantly reduces the notoriously long MMOG development cycle."
"The team at BioWare is creating an incredible experience, and we're honored that they've selected our tool to help them build this epic world," said David Whatley, Simutronics' Chief Executive Office and HeroEngine Chief Designer. "We've invested years of experience and our passion for virtual world entertainment into developing HeroEngine, and we're confident that fans and online gaming enthusiasts alike will be happy with the finished product."

KE Studios and Shrapnel Games are pleased to announce that a demo for the eagerly awaited War Plan Pacific has been launched and is ready for immediate download. Taste a slice of what to expect in the game by commanding either the Imperial Japanese forces as they rampage across the Pacific from December 1941 until March 1942, or begin the journey to Japan as the Allies and experience the fight from August 1942 through November 1942. Unlike the full game, the demo is limited to single player only, and lacks the ability to save.
The full version of War Plan Pacific is slated to ship within a week. Available only for Windows, War Plan Pacific is a turn-based grand strategic game of the epic conflict between Imperial Japan and the Western Allies during the Second World War. Players can command the historical forces of Japan, the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and the Netherlands in three different scenarios providing historical and alternate set-ups, playable against either the AI or a live opponent via the Internet.
Inspired in part by the classic Avalon Hill board game on the subject, Victory in the Pacific, War Plan Pacific has a comfortable tabletop feel while embracing the digital experience. And just like that classic title, War Plan Pacific was designed from the ground up to be playable in a single session. Average play time is under three hours. And yes, that's from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay.
While the game plays fast don't confuse playability with a lack of historical gameplay. John Hawkins, developer of War Plan Pacific, has simply distilled down the Pacific conflict into its more important aspects, creating a game that holds true to reality while not becoming mired with details. Players will find that they can pursue historical strategies in their bid for victory, or branch off and set their own course.
Turns are one month long, and units represent individual ships of light cruiser size or larger, amphibious and transport groups, and air groups. War Plan Pacific emphasizes air and naval combat, abstracting land combat. Combat is handled via a battleboard, and much like the game at large, provides players with many interesting decisions while never weighing them down.
But enough talk! See for yourself what War Plan Pacific has to offer by downloading the demo right now from Shrapnel Games. Just follow this link and download away!
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/KE_Stud.../WPP_page.html
While downloading the demo check out the complete overview of the game, and after enjoying what the demo offers head on back to order the full game for only $39.95

Additionally you may find that you need to temporarily disable Vista's User Access Control (UAC). Please refer to your Vista documentation for further instructions on the disabling and subsequent re-enabling of UAC if necessary.
NEW VIDEO ACCELERATION SETTING
If you play the game and notice unplayably slow map scroll speeds and unit selection time, then please activate the "Video Acceleration" option from inside the Settings panel. That option will use a different method to handle graphics and should put your game performance back to regular levels. If you have never noticed any extreme game slowness, you can leave this option set to OFF.
