As you've no doubt noticed, the deadline for the Windows XP downgrade option keeps getting pushed back and back, and it looks like it's now also getting more and more expensive, as Dell has now tripled the cost of the option on its consumer laptops and desktops to $150. As TG Daily notes, this latest move follows a similar increase to $99 on Dell's more business-minded Vostro laptops and desktops which, for the time being at least, seem to be remaining as is. Of course, you can always put that $150 towards a Windows XP-equipped netbook instead, which seems to be fast becoming the primary home for the venerable OS.

Mythic boss Mark Jacobs has warned that the first expansion pack for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning could be a long time coming.
Posting in a speculative thread on the VN Boards, Jacobs said that work hadn't begun in earnest on the first expansion to the young MMO - and that once it did, it would take a long time. The developer's priority remains updating the live game for now.
"Just so you know, we haven't begun work on an XPack yet and aren't going to until we get a lot more done in WAR," Jacobs said. "The expansion can wait a little longer but the main game can't."
"And once we begin work on an XPack, it's going to take us quite a while to do it," he added. "We're still at the talking stages and while we think we have some rather interesting ideas, it's not time yet to even go to Games Workshop to get their blessing."
Jacbos hinted that he was a fan of the Vampire Counts from Warhammer lore, so they might well feature. He also said that fans speculating in the thread had hit on many of the same ideas as the developer.
Warhammer Online gets its first major content update, 1.1, this week. It adds two new playable careers, new quests and a revamp of the game's open-world warfare. More details at the Warhammer Online gamepage.

Criterion has decided to offer free trials of Burnout Paradise on PC ahead of the full release in February.
This demo will present the whole of Paradise City, limited only by time, allowing testers to do just about anything and go more or less anywhere. That includes multiplayer, where up to eight can race together online.
PC owners will also be able to see how well the game runs on their setup.
The trial will be hosted by the Criterion and EA websites, and the developer also plans to shift "millions" of discs out into the world, apparently. The trial won't require a disc to run, so these can be spread to friends like germs.
When February rolls around, Burnout Paradise PC will come complete with all of the content released for the console versions so far: the Cagney update, Bikes Pack and Party Pack.
The desktop version will receive all future content, too, like the brand new island area that Criterion detailed recently.
Burnout Paradise PC, incidentally, features beefed-up monitor resolutions - some of the first shots were captured in 1920x2400, which is a complicated sum for a human brain (like ours) to tackle.

Grand Theft Auto IV publisher Rockstar has confirmed it is working on a patch to resolve problems with the PC version of the game.

In addition, a patch is on the way. It will include improvements to the video editor, memory savings, graphic improvements and support for DirectInput controllers - check out the forum post for the full rundown.
Rockstar is also working to fix problems with power management software and errors with the Social Club.
A release date for the patch has yet to be announced, as it must first receive certification from Microsoft,. However, Rockstar stated, "The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval."

Despite possessing "draconian DRM" meant to thwart an internet that's currently teeming with PC gaming pirates, Electronic Arts' controversial (in more ways than one) life-sim Spore recently topped a list compiled by TorrentFreak which charts the most pirated PC games of 2008. With 1.7 million illicit downloads (much more than 2nd place finisher Sims 2, which had 1.15 million), it would seem that EA's strict anti-piracy measures led to ... extra piracy. Here's the top ten most pirated PC titles for the year -- with only BitTorrent downloads present and accounted for, we suggest taking the list with a SecuROM-protected grain of salt.
Spore -- 1,700,000
The Sims 2 -- 1,150,000
Assassins Creed -- 1,070,000
Crysis -- 940,000
Command & Conquer 3 -- 860,000
Call of Duty 4 -- 830,000
GTA San Andreas -- 740,000
Fallout 3 -- 645,000
Far Cry 2 -- 585,000
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 -- 470,000

While downloadable content for Star Wars: the Force Unleashed has mainly consisted of new costumes so far, LucasArts has announced the release of a new single-player level for the game - and more new costumes.
The new level takes place on the Planet Coruscant inside of a Jedi Temple, where the Secret Apprentice travels in search of information about his father. Searching through the rubble he is forced to face his own inner demons, which I'm guessing are much more unpleasant than his outer demons.
New character skins included in the pack range from a Lightsaber training droid to the bad mother himself, Mace L. Windu. Hit the jump for some screens of the new level and costumes, along with a complete list of who you can be now.

Developer EA Los Angeles has released patch 1.05 for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, its critically-acclaimed, strategy game. Being billed as the "first major patch" for the RTS, the update includes a DRM De-authorization Tool. According to an official statement, "This easy-to-use tool allows gamers to de-authorize previously authenticated machines so they ultimately have the freedom to play Red Alert 3 on an unlimited number of PCs."
Another feature that patch 1.05 includes is the WorldBuilder. According to Electronic Arts, the feature is a powerful map-making tool that gives players "full creative control and all the tools they will need to make the ultimate Red Alert 3 skirmish or multiplayer map."
On top of the new additions, patch 1.05 offers the standard technical bug fixes and balancing tweaks across all three of the game's factions.
To download the patch, simply start the game and go online.

Hey guys,
We are aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV on their PC’s and we would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible.
We would ask anyone that is encountering difficulties to contact their local technical support helpline for advice and recommendations. These telephone numbers can be found in the game’s manual.
There is also a regularly updated technical support page available on the Rockstar Games website http://www.rockstargames.com/support/ where there are many useful faqs and information on how to resolve some common problems being encountered.
Thanks,
Webmaster@R*

Microsoft has quietly released version 2.0 of the Games for Windows Live software, which includes an exciting new client that allows you to browse a nearly empty Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace.
As I said, things are relatively barren right now, with a handful of trailers that we could just as easily get somewhere else and a demo for Viva Pinata the only items available via the marketplace right now. It does indeed feature my gamer score in the top corner, but there's no way to really interact with it, so it just sort of sits there. Nice.
This is the sort of thing you'd think would warrant a big announcement, but there you go. Even the official GFW forums waited 2 days after the software was made available to say anything about it. Shhhh. Don't tell anyone else. It'll be our secret.

2K Boston's Ken Levine, of BioShock fame, has called out for the industry to work on making the PC platform "more broadly successful."
Telling Forbes that he was most at home when playing games behind a keyboard and mouse, Levine detailed the barriers behind consumers adopting the platform.
"I wish the industry could find a way to make PC gaming more broadly successful," he explained. "There are so many challenges for PC gaming - the complications from systems specifications to the drivers - most people look at PC games and say, 'What are you talking about?'"
"It's a shame because as a gamer, I am never more comfortable than I am sitting with a mouse and keyboard two inches away from my monitor."
Levine went on to talk about the benefits digital distribution will bring to the industry as a whole by opening up new ways of delivering a product.
"One of the biggest problems we face as an industry is the notion that we really only have one channel to deliver product," Levine commented. "A game comes out and it has three weeks where it either hits or it fails. When you look at movies, they have the theatrical release, they have pay per view, and it is on airplanes, in hotels and DVDs. We don't have that. We need to provide different levels of investment."
"With [downloadable content], Rock Band being the best example, DLC makes it so you can be invested in a way you've never been invested before."

Back in October Microsoft showcased a pre-Beta version of Windows 7 at its Professional Developers Conference, and it just recently been confirmed that the full Beta should be available next month.
Those who register for and attend one of the upcoming MSDN developer conferences will get a DVD with Windows 7 Beta 1 on it, though since these start this month the handout will only come into force during some of the later events in January.
Event blogger Keith Combs stated that "My understanding is that the DVD will not be ready for the first few show dates but will be mailed to each attendee. We are targeting to have the DVDs in the materials from 1/13/2009 on."
It was around 16 months between the launch of Windows Vista Beta 1 and the official release, so if we're to believe that Windows 7 needs a similar timeframe you could expect it in early summer 2010. Probably best not to put any money on this just yet though.

Apple isn't exactly used to eating humble pie but took in a slice recently when it was forced to remove its iPhone advert for misleading consumers.
Knife and fork at the ready then since one of the companies most notorious claims, namely that of the lack of virus threats on its computers, is now something that must be confined to the past.
In late November an update to Apple's support site saw it recommending the use of anti-virus tools to protect Macs for the first time, following a string of malware designed to target its machines.
It seems like a rather knee-jerk reaction on the part of Apple since you're encouraged to use multiple applications so that "virus programmers have more than one to circumvent", which does sound a bit overkill both in terms of affecting the performance of your computer and your bank balance.

Expansion packs with new adventures and maps will be constantly added to the game, providing endless opportunities for gamers to uncover new content and secrets.

will act as the player's virtual personal space. These virtual castles
can be upgraded, assembled, traded, and shared

As of today, James "Ender" Brown has left the lead team of ScummVM.
Ender joined the ScummVM team back in February 2002 and became project co-lead already one month later. The original founders of ScummVM, yazoo and strigeus, were still active, but soon after left ScummVM for other ventures. Ender remained as the sole project leader until March 2003, when Max "Fingolfin" Horn joined him at the steering wheel. The long time leading triumvirate of ScummVM was completed in April 2006 with the addition of Eugene "sev" Sandulenko. Together, we went through many good and bad times.
Ender worked especially hard on the PR side of things, including tons of posts in the news section of this site (we really should post news updates more frequently again!), and many behind-the-scenes negotiations with companies regarding source code releases and other things. Not to mention repeatedly crossing swords with the legal department of LucasArts.
Recently, due to personal issues, Ender has had less and less time to work on ScummVM and related things. Not wanting to harm the project by being unable to devote enough time to take care of important tasks, Ender has graciously agreed to resign his post.
The remaining project leaders, Fingolfin and Sev, would like to thank Ender for his many years of faithful leadership, and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

If it's Tuesday, it must be time for yet another "revolutionary" motion sensitive game controller. Of course, 3DiJoy's FlingPC is no TrueMotion 3D or Wiimote -- at best, it seems to be the next wireless mouse. Consisting of an accelerometer-equipped Bluetooth remote and a USB dongle, and bundled with ten custom 3D games, this looks like the sort of off-brand toy that hapless parents inflict upon their long-suffering children. Interested? We bet you are. Shipping in December, packages start at $99 for both Windows and Linux versions. Of course, you can't play Mario Kart with the thing -- but don't worry, they do have a generic bowling game for you.

They may be sleek and pretty as a picture but the latest Apple MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops have been hit by a series of mysterious graphics-related issues.
The company has said that it is now investigating two separate graphics-related problems that are affecting its new MacBook line-up. The first one, ominously dubbed 'the black screen of death' by victims, occurs on MacBook Pros when users are playing games. Screens go black, the laptop freezes and the audio goes in infinite loop playback.
The problem affects models running Windows or Mac OS X while playing games like Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Ages of Empire III, Command and Conquer, Oblivion, Company of Heroes, among others.
The second issue, which is affecting some MacBooks and MacBook Pros, manifests as wavy video distortions while scrolling Web pages and watching HD content. The issue does not occur on Windows based Macs and it thought to be an issue with nVidia's Mac drivers.
Anyone out there having these issues, let us know
