Those who continue to play Epic Games' Gears of War on the PC have run into an unfortunate problem. It appears the game refuses to start, something being reported on Epic's forums and on various gaming news sites like Voodoo Extreme. The issue was addressed in the linked forum thread by an Epic employee, saying the studio is aware of the problem and currently working on a fix with Microsoft.
After seeing the post we loaded up our version of the game and found the same error which read 'You cannot run the game with modified executable code. Please reinstall the game.' Users were reporting a reinstall does not address the issue.
As suggested on the Epic forums, we then tested out the proposed solution of winding back our system's clock. We set it at January 22, 2009, relaunched the game and were successful in getting it up and running. Until Epic finds a solution, it appears this method will have to suffice.
We've put in a request for comment to Epic but as of yet have not received a response.
Gear of War was released for the PC in November of 2007, approximately one year after the Xbox 360 version.

January 29th, 2009, 20:43 Posted By: wraggster
Expansion packs for games are no new thing, but Mythic Entertainment today is announcing what it's calling its first live expansion for Warhammer Online. What exactly is a live expansion? In this context, it's going to be three month rollout of events, new classes, and a large new dungeon for the fantasy-themed MMO. And it's going to be free for existing subscribers.
The fun will begin actually around Valentine's Day, when Mythic will kick things off with a seven day event that's designed to get players to build up grudges. "It's Valentine's Day with a twist," explained senior producer Jeff Hickman. Here's how it works: while playing the game you may get a mission to assassinate another player who happens to be on the other side (it's Order versus Destruction, remember). The thing is, you may have a mark on your head, and there may be another player looking to whack you. The reward for a successful kill is literally a trophy head that you can then show off. If you get killed and someone gets your head, you're likely going to get mad and want some payback, which is the point.
Basically everyone can participate in this event, even new players. To keep things fair, the player-versus-player rules of the game prevent a level-20 character from clown stomping a level-3 character, so you'll be given assassination missions to whack someone who has a comparable experience level to your own.
That will lead into the Bitter Rivals event, launching in March. This is another seven day event where players will be given many tasks involving realm-versus-realm combat. There's a new RvR scenario called Twisting Tower, as well. You'll want to complete the event, because doing so will give you early access to the two brand new character classes (or careers, in WAR speak) that are being introduced: The Orc Choppa and the Dwarf Slayer.
According to Hickman, the new classes are basically melee DPS (damage-per-second) classes. They're designed to inflict massive amounts of damage, but they're lightly armored, so they can't take much damage, either. This makes them ideal for delivering a coup de grace, but they won't be mistaken for a tank class. Both classes have a berserk mechanic that works like, as Hickman explained, an RPM meter. When they go into the combat the berserk meter starts to build. When it enters the green range it unlocks special abilities that are fueled by the berserk rage. If you let the rage build up the meter goes into the red, which is volatile. The berserker then can do an extraordinary amount of damage, but they become especially vulnerable, so they can be taken down quickly. It's a trade off.
Those who complete the Bitter Rivals event will have about an exclusive heads start with the new classes, but eventually everyone else will be allowed in too. That takes up the rest of March. But in April, Mythic will begin the Beyond the Sands event, which will start to introduce the next major new piece of content: The Land of the Dead, a large RVR-gated dungeon. Details about Beyond the Sands are forthcoming, but it will lead into a May event called Rise of the Tomb Kings. This is another competitive event, but on a larger scale. This time the forces of Order and Destruction will battle for the privilege of having exclusive first access to the Lands of the Dead when it opens. The losing realm will have to sit and wait while the winning realm gets to be the pathfinders and get first access to the Land of the Dead.
The Land of the Dead opens in June, and Hickman said it consists of approximately two parts. The first is a large, outdoor area that's full of lots of new content, from public quests, monsters, rewards, and more. This all takes place on an area about three-quarters the size of a starting zone, so we're talking a large chunk of geography. (The content will be designed for levels 30 to 40).
The second part is a large pyramid called the Tomb of the Vulture Lord. This is what's called a gated dungeon; factions will battle for access to enter the pyramid. The winners get to go in, while the losers have to wait. However, the winners will only have a limited amount of time to explore before the other realm is invited in. That means battles can erupt inside the pyramid, and teams can be caught surprised, since the place is full of all sorts of devious traps and challenges; you may be busy trying to deal with the tomb's defenders when the other realm suddenly appears from behind.
It all makes for a very extensive rollout, which seems unusual, but there's a reason for that. "We didn't want to call it a bunch of patches," Hickman said.

Lionhead is not working on a PC version of its action-RPG sequel Fable II, according to a post by one of the developer's employees on its community forums. The post's language leaves room for interpretation, however, as it says, "We're not working on a PC version of Fable II," indicating that it might be possible another studio is handling the duties of bringing it across platforms.
We contacted Microsoft for a comment on the situation and to clarify if Lionhead would start work on the as of yet unannounced PC version soon or if another studio was in fact working on it right now and received the following response: "We have no announcements on future "Fable" franchise projects at this time."
Fable II was shipped out last October for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Based on what happened with the first game, which was released in September 2004 for the Xbox and later in September 2005 for the PC, some consider it likely a PC version of the sequel will eventually show up.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is getting its first major booster shot just six months after its initial launch. Titled A Call to Arms, the changes will come to the game in the form of a number of in-game events held over the course of a few months -- the devs are calling it a "live expansion." Our ninja-looting sister site Massively has all the details about the upcoming events as well as an in-depth interview with WAR executive producer Jeff Hickman, but here's a basic breakdown of the events, and the additions they'll bring:- Call to Arms: Bitter Rivals (Late Feb.) -- The Bitter Rivals event features quests, tasks and RvR activities which will allow players to unlock the once-canceled Orc Choppa and Dwarf Slayer classes. Players who don't participate in the events will unlock the two classes a week later.
- Call to Arms: Beyond the Sands (April) and Rise of the Tomb Kings (May) -- Hickman didn't share many details about these two events, only explaining that they would eventually lead up to the launch of ...
- The Land of the Dead (June) -- An internal dungeon (with accompanying external zone) which realms will compete to control. It will feature new public quests, instances, items and a pyramid which houses the Tomb King; the dungeon's focal point which Hickman promises will incite "crazy epic adventures."

PopCap Games has announced that retail sales of its PC titles nearly doubled in the last calendar year, according to data released by NPD.
The Bejeweled and Peggle developer saw its retail revenues grow by 85.3 per cent during the 12 month period, making PopCap one of the top 20 highest earning videogame companies.
The company's growth came in the latter part of the year, fuelled partially by the release of Bejeweled Twist.
"Our family-friendly casual games appeal to the broadest consumer audience – literally anyone over the age of five or six – making our products extremely reliable sellers at retail," explained Dennis Ryan, executive vice president of global business development.
"And the games themselves represent a markedly different value proposition to that enormous target audience, compared to traditional 'hardcore' video games."
"From Bejeweled Twist to Zuma, our games offer hundreds of hours of entertainment for multiple members of the family at USD 20 or less – as opposed to a hardcore game that lists for two to three times as much and has far narrower appeal. We're excited to move forward in the new year as we expand our retail line-up to include world class console titles."

We've seen colleges, in an effort to coolify their stuffy catalog, offer classes that use video games to explain academic concepts, applying a chocolate coating of gaming fun to help the pill of education to go down easier. What we like about a new StarCraft class being offered at UC Berkeley is that it's just that: A class to help you be better at StarCraft and enjoy playing it more. Really.
From the course description: "What may look like complex topics are just ways we want you to think more deeply about the game to derive a greater satisfaction from playing. Furthermore, this understanding should have applications in real life, to further synthesize new information from limited inferences."
Note that it says it "should" have real-world applications. As in, "This should be of some practical use to you, but even if it's not, you just played StarCraft on the US Department of Education's dime, so maybe you shouldn't look a gift Protoss in the mouth

While we're certain the point-and-click enthusiasts among us would like to get their paws on Joystiq's favorite game of 2008, Fable 2, it looks like they'll be waiting for a while longer -- on a Lionhead forum post asking whether or not the Albionic caper would be making its way to computers, community manager Woody swiftly answered, "We're not working on a PC version of Fable 2." As far as we can tell, no winks, nods or suggestive elbow nudges were included in the dispatch.
Woody's statement seems contrary to a report which made the rounds late last week -- a report which claimed that a Lionhead rep confirmed that a PC version of Fable 2 was "likely imminent". Why the discrepancy? We contacted Lionhead's senior community manager, Sam Van Tilburgh, who explained that the quote embedded in said report wasn't legit. Get comfortable, WASDers -- it's looking like Molyneux's hero sim won't be hitting your platform of choice in the near future.

EA has announced the live-action cast of the Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Uprising expansion, adding in a little ultra-violence, a bit of unfortunate anime adaptation, and a whole lot of Flair.
Ric Flair, that is. The 16-time world heavyweight wrestling champion joins an all-star lineup of new additions to the Red Alert 3 roster, portraying Commander Hill, one of the commanders players will take on in the new Commander's Challenge mode. Flair was understandably excited about the role.
“When I found out that EA wanted me to be part of Command & Conquer, all I could say was ‘Woooooooooooo!’”

Spore senior producer Morgan Roarty has been weighing up the similarities between the Maxis game and Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet, as well as their relative strengths.
Speaking to us at a recent EA event, Roarty contemplated whether LittleBigPlanet had stolen all of the hype surrounding user created game content in recent times.
"We've had plenty of noise on our day," he said, later adding, "I was already at Maxis for a couple of years working on Spore before I heard about LittleBigPlanet so I don't know if they were inspired by us.
"They don't have anything near our numbers of things created," he asserted, noting that around 200,000-250,000 creatures, buildings and vehicles are created daily by Spore players.
"I don't think their base editors are as easily accessible as our editors, I think we really have that on them," he continued.
While speaking passionately about his game, Roarty insisted there's "no ill will" between Maxis and Media Molecule and also acknowledged that there isn't "a lot for people to do" with their creations in Spore, "where as in LittleBigPlanet you can make stuff with those things".
He went on to explain that Maxis will address this shortcoming in the upcoming Spore expansion, Galactic Adventures. It'll allow you to completely customise planets and create adventures to share with other players using new editing tools.
"They can't give people our 64 million [Sporepedia entries]," Roarty, who's Galactic Adventures' executive producer, added of Media Molecule. "We want to get that 64 million to have that kind of functionality and then we're going to be happy."
Roarty went on to reveal that Galactic Adventures "wasn't our original expansion pack idea", saying "it was [originally] more of an added fiction" across all of Spore's stages that allowed gamers to replay "all of the levels in a different way".

Mythic continues to have fun with Warhammer Online bloggers and tease the announcement of new Warhammer Online classes this week. The MMO's developer has dropped a very heavy hint that we'll see the Orc Choppa soon.
The Greenskin has received a package containing a DVD of classic 80s action flick Predator, and instructions to watch it at one hour, 16 minutes and 16 seconds in.
That's when governor of California and Austrian man-mountain utters the immortal line, "Get to da choppa!"
This follows last week's riddle, in which Keen and Graev's blog received a slightly more cryptic package hinting at the unveiling of the Dwarf Slayer career. Both parcels included a card promising more information this Thursday, 29th January.
The Orc Choppa is a berserker-style melee fighter, and was originally planned to appear when Warhammer Online launched in September last year. However, it was pulled alongside three other careers and when, according to Mythic, they didn't prove fun enough.
Two of these - Empire and Dark Elf tanking classes - have already been reinstated. Going by the latest hints, the Choppa will return, while the Dwarf Hammerer will be replaced with the Slayer.
We'll know more soon, and you'll find it - along with everything else WAR - at the Warhammer Online gamepage.

EA is apparently "evaluating the launch window" for The Sims 3, reports Eurogamer. The game was given a February 20 release date last August, but now European retailers are being told by the publisher to expect a delay. EA stated that it would have more information in the near future, presumably tying into EA CEO John Riccitiello's desire to make the third Sims a "huge success." The publisher sure could use the cash.
We've contacted EA to find out if it's "evaluating" the release date for North America as well. We'll update if we hear anything.

Microsoft has closed its internal Aces Studio, the developer behind the PC Flight Simulator series.
"Following our annual strategy review process, IEB [Interactive Entertainment Business] is making adjustments within our business to align our people against our highest priorities," an MS rep told Edge.
"One specific change is we are implementing is the closure of the Aces Studio, which was responsible for the Flight Simulator franchise."
If you haven't ever sampled any of the Flight Sim titles you'll probably be surprised to know there were an absolute ton of them, and they didn't review badly either.
For those of you that are fans, MS did add that it will continue to invest in the flying genre, although that's all it's saying for now.
"Regarding the future of Flight Simulator, all we're announcing at this time is that we are committed to flying games. You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great Live experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing to announce around Flight Simulator specifically at this time."
The studio closure comes as Microsoft revealed plans to get rid of 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months, with 1,400 to be eliminated immediately.
