While Dawn of War II isn't scheduled to release until February 19, Relic producer Mark Noseworthy has revealed that the highly-anticipated real-time strategy game has already received a day-zero patch.
"We've already patched the Beta based on internal THQ developer feedback a week before it has even gone live to the public," wrote Noseworthy on the game's community web site.
While the game is scheduled to ship with five available multiplayer maps, Noseworthy revealed that Dawn of War II would receive two additional multiplayer maps within the first week of the game's release. The game producer also stated that free and premium downloadable content, by means of Games for Windows – LIVE Marketplace, would eventually make their way to Dawn of War II. According to Noseworthy, the game may get additional DLC within the first few weeks of release.

The U.S. Army has announced America's Army 3, the third installment in the realistic army simulation series. Coming out roughly six years after the first America's Army, players can download America's Army 3 for free sometime later this year on the game's web site.
Using the Unreal Engine 3, America's Army will usher in modern technology and authentic weaponry used by today's US army. "With AA3, we're taking military gaming to an all new level where every detail counts," said Col. Casey Wardynski, originator and Director of the America's Army game project. "We want our America's Army 3 players to have a greater understanding of the Army and its values. Our Soldiers are aspirational figures and our players are able to virtually experience many aspects of a Soldier's life from their training, to their missions, to the way the Army has influenced their lives."
In America's Army, players are bound by Rules of Engagement. This means that participants will gain experience as they navigate challenges in team-based, multiplayer, and force-on-force operations. In addition, the upcoming game will include training missions that will allow gamers to increase their in-game skill level. As players participate in specialized training missions, they will unlock new abilities and gear.
America's Army will feature a variety of army classes, including infantry soldiers, riflemen, automatic riflemen, and more.
"In AA3 we've taken all of the best features in AA2, incorporated feedback from the AA community and added the latest technology to develop a high-tech game that can be customized by the player to create a much more detailed interactive experience," said Michael Bode, executive producer of the America's Army game. "One of our key design philosophies is to make the game easily accessible to a new player, while at the same time keeping a deeper layer of complexity for the more advanced players to discover and take advantage of."

via Eurogamer
THQ has announced that Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II will be released a week earlier than expected in the US on 19th February.
Alas, however, THQ UK told Eurogamer this morning that our release date stands firm as 20th February, so we're not first any more. Oh well!
With the game a month away from release, inevitably it's also been confirmed finished, which prompted an avalanche of excitable executive quotes. Well, two, of which one is developer Relic's general manager Tarrnie Williams, who said the game "stays true to the fast-paced, brutal heart of the Dawn of War series, while introducing branching single-player storylines and unique unit customisation".
That's not too hard to believe, as you will know if you picked up on the game's star billing in out Coming Attractions: Fighting & Strategy feature last week, where we hoped out loud that new approaches in single-player and multiplayer would satisfy a broader audience as well as looking mega-snazzy.
THQ also plans to begin a multiplayer open beta on 28th February following an exclusivity period for owners of Dawn of War expansion Soulstorm, which starts tomorrow.
We'll also have some exciting news for Dawn of War II fans tomorrow ourselves, so stick around if you fancy getting closer to Relic's latest take on the Warhammer universe.

January 20th, 2009, 21:06 Posted By: wraggster
The man behind the hugely successful Football Manager series reckons game prices would be reduced if a cure for piracy were ever discovered.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com in an interview to be published tomorrow, Miles Jacobson, studio director at Sports Interactive, said that there won't be a "proper cure" for piracy without a "change in society".
Video game piracy was one of the hot topics in 2008. The year saw a number of developers suggest the PC game market was in poor health, and a number of high-profile PC titles come under fire from gamers for including restrictive copy protection measures.
Football Manager 2009 itself suffered complaints after players struggled to authenticate the game when it was released in November last year. According to Jacobson, there currently isn't a legitimate cracked version of the game available and, "apart from the people who bought the game on day one, 98 per cent of people since authenticated first time without any problems whatsoever".
He said: "I don't know whether there is a proper cure for piracy without a change in society, to be honest. There needs to be some kind of copy protection in your product otherwise retail aren't going to stock your product, so we do have to take some measures. We will investigate all avenues open to us once again for next year to see what the best solution is. What we believed we had this year was something that was going to be better for the consumer compared to the system where you had to keep the disc in the drive, which you don't have to do with our system, and be completely unobtrusive.
"I don't think it will ever be fixed and it is a shame because the price of games would go down if the issue was fixed and we'd be able to have more people working on the titles."
When asked about the 90 per cent piracy rate that Beautiful Game Studios has confirmed rival product Championship Manager suffers, Jacobson replied: "It sounds about right to me. To put it into perspective, there was a key code that was leaked on a Russian piracy site, as being a key code that they claimed would work with any version of the game. It doesn't work at all. It's been attempted by 338,000 unique people. So, that's just one key code. That's not including people who are playing cracked versions. So 90 per cent could actually be quite low.
"But I don't know what the figures are because we've got no way of tracking it. We don't believe there is a way to track fully exactly how many downloads we have. What we do know is there are countries out there where there are 30,000 members signed up and active on a local language forum and we sell 2,000 copies in that country to date. So, that 90 per cent level could be a low figure. I could pick a figure out of my arse but it wouldn't really do anyone any good. But piracy is incredibly bad!"
What do you think about Jacobson's comments on piracy? Do you agree that game prices would go down if it were 'fixed'? Let us know in the comments section below.

A Flash demo is available now for those looking to try Puzzle Quest's sci-fi follow-up, Galactrix. The rules may be slightly different (the no extra turn for 4-of-a-kind is a doozy), but be warned, star gazing gem shifters: the refined spice which made the fantasy realm of Puzzle Quest so addictive is still quite potent in this new form.
Galactrix is expected to arrive the relatively near future for Nintendo DS, PC, XBLA and PSN. The demo doesn't seem to take prisoners, so hit the enemy with lasers and use shields when opportunity allows.

This Thursday, GameTap will remove 97 games from its gratis lineup, making them available only to Gold subscribers. The current free lineup consists of 145 titles, making this a 67% reduction in games. Of course, quality is more important than quantity in this situation, and there are several noteworthy titles (Tomb Raider: Legend, Deus Ex, Psychonauts) being removed.
Going forward, GameTap will make certain titles available free for one week only, which is something the service has been doing for almost half a year. It's unclear whether the cuts have anything to do with Metaboli taking over the service in the near future.

You might've skipped the Vista train, thinking it was like Under Siege 2, minus Steve Seagal. Or not. Either way, you're probably gonna jump onboard Windows 7. When you do, it's time to go 64-bit.
Who Should Go 64-bit?
Basically, anyone geeky enough to read this. If you have an Intel Core 2 Duo or newer processor, you've got a 64-bit CPU, and you should install the 64-bit version of Windows 7 to play with. (Here's how. You've got like 5 days left, BTW.) Microsoft itself is pimping 64-bit over 32-bit now and notebook makers have already started pushing 64-bit Windows Vista over 32-bit. Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard will be 64-bit down to its kernel, so you won't be alone by any means. 64-bit is going mainstream.
Why Should I?
We explained what's so awesome about 64-bit in detail a couple months ago, but to recap in a single word: Memory. With 32-bit Windows, you're stuck at 4GB of RAM, and even then, you're only using about 3.3GB of it, give or take. With 64-bit, 4GB of RAM is the new minimum standard, and with 4GB, you can run tons of applications with zero slowdown. Windows 7 (and Vista for that matter) runs so beautifully with 4GB of RAM you'll wonder how you ever did with less. It makes your system more futureproof too, so you can take your system to 8GB, 32GB or even a terabyte, before too long.
Who Shouldn't Go 64-Bit?
If you're not planning on going to 4GB of RAM anytime soon, you might wanna hold back, since you need 4GB of RAM to take full advantage of 64-bit's memory management. That said, RAM is so disgustingly cheap right now, and has such an intense bang-to-buck ratio, you should definitely upgrade to 4GB if you haven't already. Anyone who runs specialized or older gear (see below) should probably not jump into 64-bit.
64-bit Sniggles
It's true that 64-bit Windows used to be dicey on the driver and compatibility front, but from Vista onward, it's typically nothing you have to worry about. Most new hardware has 64-bit drivers, and even though most applications aren't 64-bit native yet, 32-bit ones usually run just fine.
Still, the biggest issue is hardware. If a gadget doesn't have 64-bit drivers, it won't work with your 64-bit OS, since 32-bit drivers aren't supported. Most non-crusty gadgets should be okay. (Seriously, I've run 64-bit Vista for a year, and now Windows 7, and everything I've tested for Giz plugs in just fine.) But if you run legacy goods, it might be kinda sticky, and you should still double check your gear just to be safe.
There are a few software issues to look out for, too. Google's Chrome, for instance, doesn't play nice with Windows 7 64-bit for some people (like me). Adobe Flash doesn't run in 64-bit browsers, but that's not really a problem—you can just run the regular 32-bit browser instead. iTunes had problems with 64-bit versions of Windows in the past, too (granted, Apple's not the most fastidious Windows app developer out there). Most of these issues have been or will be resolved, but if you use specialized mission-critical software, definitely read up on its 64-bit compatibility.
Really, Go 64-Bit
The caveat section looks longer than the "DO IT" section, but really, you'll probably be just fine running 64-bit. A ton of other people will be 64-bit with this generation of OSes/hardware too, so you won't be alone. The benefits of oodles of RAM, given all the crap you're running simultaneously, are just too good to pass up, especially once more apps are 64-bit native. Besides, the more people that jump on the 64-bit Express, the faster developers will transition their apps to 64-bit, and any bumps in the road will be smoothed out. So don't just do it for yourself, do it for everyone.

via Computer and Video Games
The CEO of BioWare has told us that, contrary to numerous 'PC gaming is dying' claims, the sector's in fine health on a number of fronts.
"I think there are more people playing PC games and more dollars being spent on the PC space than ever before, but it's taking a different form," Ray Muzyka said in a recent interview.
According to Muzyka the PC gaming landscape is changing as audiences and technology evolve, and it's the job of developers to adapt to these new market conditions.
"MMOs are one way that's occurring... And there are more people playing flash-based games and casual games, even core games that are played in a casual way, so maybe [they have] a more core experience and you only play them for short bursts or for half an hour or something.
"It's not a bad thing if people want to play more types of games than they did 20 years ago, it's natural and normal as the audience and technology evolves... As creators we have to adapt to that and continue to make sure that we're satisfying the audience, but it doesn't mean we have to compromise.
"We can still make deep rich experiences but we have to make them easy to access, you have make the control system really easy to use, and you have to make people feel like they're playing an experience that they can play how they want to play it, whether that is long sessions or short sessions."

Game developers can make money from the "tons" of naughty kids currently pirating their games, PC juggernaut Valve has said.
Speaking at the Game Business Summit in the US last week, Valve's business and legal affairs director Jason Holtman called game pirates "undiscovered customers".
He said, "Pirates are underserved customers. When you think about it that way, you think, 'Oh my gosh, I can do some interesting things and make some interesting money off of it.'
"We take all of our games day-and-date to Russia," Holtman said of Valve. "The reason people pirated things in Russia is because Russians are reading magazines and watching television. They say 'Man, I want to play that game so bad,' but the publishers respond 'you can play that game in six months... maybe.'
"We found that our piracy rates dropped off significantly," Holtman added, explaining that Valve makes sure its games are on the sale in Russian day-and-date with Western Europe.
Game pirates are "tons of undiscovered customers" he concluded because of how narrowly Publishers look at the Western market.
Anyone who's still pirating games, despite the stupidly-cheap prices on Steam, is going to be a hard 'customer' to turn, if you ask us.

It's no huge surprise, since Microsoft was planning on improving performance on this front, but now we've got some of our first solid numbers on Windows 7 Beta SSD performance. Nothing crazy spectacular, but Windows 7 looks to have a slight edge over Vista pretty much across the board, with better speed, access time and lower CPU usage -- not bad for a beta, let's hope things continue to improve as we approach "Microsoft would like your money for this" status.

It is time to announce start of our pre-release testing. Next version of ScummVM is bringing you several new supported games as usual.
The games which were added are: Blue's 123 Time Activities, Blue's ABC Time Activities, Bud Tucker in Double Trouble and The 7th Guest. The procedure haven't changed, same as usual you need daily build of ScummVM, run through the games and submit any bugs you see along the way to the bug tracker. Once you complete the game, report on the forum post so the wiki page could be updated accordingly. We will need the version of the game, language, and platform.

The details are a little light, but the People's Daily Online reports that China will begin "real-name registration" for online players this year. It's unclear if this means character names will be required to reflect the player's real name, or if the account must use a name registered with the government. If it's the former, we already have the follow-up headline for next year: Chinese players bemoan lack of anonymity, online douchebaggery down 95%.
Four online games have also been suspended after it was discovered that they did not abide by the government's mandatory anti-addiction program.

The key word here, of course, is "retail." In fact, the real headline here should be "NPD data becomes 14% less relevant in regards to measuring the relative success or failure of the PC gaming industry," but we pay the guy who carves the headlines into the site by the letter. For what it's worth, here's the number: PC games brought in $701 million at retail last year.
As you know, that doesn't account for Steam, GoG or any of the many other platforms of digital distribution currently making up an increasingly large segment of PC game sales. As it stands, we're more inclined to report that 14% fewer people like owning boxes.

Players who missed the offramp to Paradise City can take the next exit early next month. Electronic Arts announced that the "Ultimate Box" edition of Burnout Paradise will ship in North America on February 5 as a PC exclusive, while players in Europe will be able to pick up the compilation on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on February 6. As previously revealed, the box will bundle together all of the game's previously released DLC, from patches to two-wheeled mayhem, in one easy-to-crash package.
Also included will be a pass-the-pad multiplayer mode, promising dozens of "quick-fire, turn-based challenges" for up to eight players. This mode will also be released to console drivers as a premium (read: not free) "Party" pack, adding new Achievements and Trophies to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions when the DLC rolls out in both North America and Europe on February 5.
Both Amazon and GameStop list the PC bundle for $40, though no official pricing for the DLC nor "Ultimate Box" edition have yet been announced.
