With the open beta attracting more than 450,000 players to the world of Taborea, Frogster Interactive has nailed down a March release date for their upcoming massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game Runes of Magic.
While the servers are all up, the item store functions properly, and all character progression from here on out carries over, Runes of Magic isn't officially released until Frogster Interactive says so, and they'll be saying so come March 19th.
"Since the open beta test launch is December, the population of Taborea has soared and we have been working closely with our community to fine tune the Runes of Magic experience", said Daniel Ullrich, Director of Product Management at Frogster, "We look forward to welcoming thousands of new players to Taborea during the next few weeks, as we get ready to fully launch Runes of Magic".
Hooray! So come March 19th, players can officially continue playing the free-to-play titles as they were, content in the knowledge that they are out of beta.

Remember that screenshot we saw of all those different Windows 7 versions (pictured above)? Well guess what? It's worse than you could have possibly imagined. The following will be the actual new SKUs for the OS:
Windows 7 Starter (limited to three apps concurrently)
Windows 7 Home Basic (for emerging markets)
Windows 7 Home Premium (adds Aero, Touch, Media Center)
Windows 7 Professional (Remote Desktop host, Mobility Center, Presentation mode)
Windows 7 Enterprise (volume license only, boot from virtual drive, BitLocker)
Windows 7 Ultimate (limited availability, includes everything)
This information has been confirmed by Microsoft... who never listens to us. At least most consumers will only see Home Premium and Professional options at retail, which is more akin to the XP options of yore, and means WMC will be "baseline" for most PCs.
Update: Just to be clear, we've checked specifically with Microsoft on all six versions, and the placement of Home Basic in emerging markets. There's now a full breakdown after the break.

It's been a long time coming, but BioWare has finally informed us that a patch is in the works for the PC version of Mass Effect . Word comes via the official forums, where community coordinator Chris Priestly posted a note on the planned update.
Priestly says that Bioware has been watching the community and gathering feedback from various users having issues with the ported game. The patch, being developed by BioWare and Demiurge, will work with all versions of Mass Effect PC (including retail and those from Steam and other digital distribution sources) and should be available "soon."

A judge in the case Blizzard brought against mod developer MDY has ruled that its auto-farming "bot" for World of Warcraft, Glider, violates Blizzard's copyright.
Glider takes control of players' characters and automatically grinds through enemies, "farming" them for gold, materials and experience. It can be used as a tool to generate funds for real-money trading, or simply as a way to level up a character without putting the hours in.
Either way, using Glider distorts the game experience and constitutes a violation of the user agreement for World of Warcraft - hence Blizzard's interest in shutting it down. Judge David Campbell already passed summary judgement in favour of Blizzard last summer, and awarded it damages in the autumn.
But this latest ruling could have much wider implications for digital rights management, as argued in an interesting if rather technical Ars Technica article.
The argument put forward by Blizzard and accepted by the judge is that the "non-literal elements" of WOW - the end-user experience, in other words, rather than the data stored on the game disc - constitute intellectual property which is protected by WOW's security software, called Warden. Therefore, because it circumvents Warden, Glider contravenes a provision of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act banning software that is "primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work".
MDY argued that the game experience was not a distinct copyright work, because it did not exist in a tangible medium, and because it was effectively created by both Blizzard and the player. The judge rejected these arguments.
Although few WOW players will mourn the setback for a mod regarded as a cheat at best, legal experts contacted by Ars Technica point out that this case sets a worrying precedent. By using legislation intended to stop file-sharing in its case, Blizzard has effectively succeeded in copyrighting not just a game, but a network service, and enshrining its right to control access to that service even if no copyright theft is at work (Glider still requires a valid copy of WOW and a paid-up subscription to work). This has the potential to cause tremendous problems for the open-source software movement in particular.
The ruling is expected to go to the Court of Appeal, so we haven't heard the last of this yet.

Back in September, images surfaced of a prototype massively multiplayer online game set in the Halo universe. The game was reported to be under development as recently as 2007 at Ensemble Studios, which closed down for good last week after finishing up its work on the upcoming real-time strategy game Halo Wars.
The gaming business Web site Gamasutra was there when the studio shut its doors last week and reports that the Halo MMO idea was alive and very well at Ensemble for a time.
The game started as a concept called Titan in 1998, after Ultima Online started getting attention in the PC gaming development community. After Microsoft began its relationship with Bungie, the Titan idea was merged with the Halo license and was code-named Orion.
Microsoft was so serious about the concept that, according to Gamasutra, it commissioned the construction of a new Ensemble campus for the game's development. But for unnamed reasons, Microsoft halted the construction and the project, and Ensemble was later marked for closure altogether.
The Halo franchise has turned out to be something of a poisoned chalice for Ensemble, which gained fame as an independent developer of the Age of Empires RTS series in the late 1990s. Microsoft bought the company in 2001, and for the past few years the studio has been working on Halo Wars, its first ground-up console game. The Halo MMO would have been Ensemble's first foray into the MMO market as well.
Microsoft has made no official statements about the Halo MMO project, but company executives have been frank in the past about their MMO ambivalence. The Halo online project is one of a handful of high-profile console MMO projects that have been shelved at the company in recent years.

[Jacob] wanted to play some sega games on his PC and felt like the experience just wasn’t complete while using the keyboard for input. He had an old MadCatz controller laying around, which could have probably been connected fairly simply, but he really wanted it to be wireless. A wireless keyboard was sacrificed, and the wireless genesis controller was born. To make it, he disassembled the keyboard to take the controller chip out. After tracing out and soldering switches to the leads, he installed it in his genesis controller.

Sure, the big hubbub's been Windows 7 (give us some time and we'll figure out how to install it on a toaster!) but Microsoft is betting that quite a few folks will be stranded in Vistaland (Vista Town? Vista Village? The dreaded Vista Flats?) for some time to come, and they'll need provisions -- like blankets, candles, water, and service packs. According to Tech Arp, Windows Vista SP2 RC is meeting testers sometime this week as an escrow build, which means that the public could see this thing as soon as early Q2 this year. You've been warned...

Paradox Interactive publicly revealed key announcements about its upcoming titles at a Paradox media event in Stockholm yesterday. In front of a packed auditorium of European journalists, Paradox Interactive showcased their forthcoming releases, with some demonstrated in public for the first time. Brand new gameplay features were revealed, including the following information:
Mount & Blade Multiplayer Expansion Announced
The first expansion pack for the critically acclaimed Mount & Blade was demoed publicly for the first time by developer Taleworlds. The expansion will include a number of new features requested by players which will vastly improve enjoyment of the game.
Improved strategic AI
Extended diplomatic options, allowing the player to wield more power
State-of the-art rendering technologies introduced for the first time, including the addition of High Dynamic Range (HDR)
Brand new multiplayer feature including the ability for 32 players (possibly more – TBD) to play on a single map in team death-match style battles
New Features in Hearts of Iron III
Lead Developer Johan Andersson introduced the first public demo of the latest installment of the best-selling World War II strategy series. Some of the brand new features unveiled in the presentation included:
AI-assisted Unit Interface – When a unit is selected, it will report to the player its current status, either negative or positive. Also, if the unit has been given a specific objective, it will report what resources it needs in order to succeed.
Improved Espionage – Players will receive more useful reports from their spies in the field, including where enemy units are located and what orders they have been given.
New "Threat" Feature – Replacing the "Belligerence" concept from Hearts of Iron II, the 'Threat" feature is a more localized and subtle feature. It affects the player's relationships with enemies and allies based on geographic proximity to the action, with stronger effects for nearby nations, and weaker effects for those countries farther away.
In-Depth Game Play Revealed in Majesty 2
After a brand new, introductory trailer was unveiled, the presentation focused on the previously unrevealed aspects of the forthcoming Majesty 2: Fantasy Kingdom Sim:
Marketplaces – Marketplaces are the hub of the kingdom. There is only one marketplace in each kingdom, making them the center of the player's game world. Because of their centralized locations, marketplaces are common targets for your enemies.
Trade Posts – Defended by turrets because of their prized attributes, Trade Posts will generate caravans which will travel to the Marketplace.
Temples – Used to promote basic heroes to more powerful heroes, Temples can be built in places of power only. Places of power are defended by magic creatures which the player needs to defeat before they are able to build a Temple.
The Stats – 16 missions in each single player campaign. 6 single player scenarios. 8 multiplayer maps. 30+ hours of gameplay
Additional highlights of the media event included a presentation by Frictional Games, the developer of the Penumbra Collection. Frictional Games briefly summarized their next project, an untitled horror game set in the 18th Century and scheduled for release sometime in 2010. Russian developer Ino-Co was also on hand to demo the latest build of their superbly polished turn-based fantasy strategy game Elven Legacy.
Spin-Off Brand Mezmer Games Announced
Paradox Interactive also announced the creation of a spin-off brand, Mezmer Games, designed to provide promising independent developers a digital distribution outlet for their games in addition to marketing support. The first game to be released under Mezmer Games is the quirky strategy title Stalin vs Martians. Another title being released is Legio, an original turn-based fantasy strategy title that counts chess amongst its influences.

According to an article in the latest issue of the Czech gaming magazine Hratelne, Deus Ex 3 will be a world coming apart as cybernetic technology creates a new form of racism, between those enhanced with nanotechnology and those who are not.
Thanks to a rough translation of the article on the Eidos Forums, we have plenty of new tidbits to chew over.
The story is about Adam Jensen, the chief of security for a cybernetic syndicate. After commandos breach his security layer with knowledge that could only come from an inside source, Jensen must search for answers. This new Deus Ex will actually serve as a prequel for the original game, which came out in June of 2000. The game will have several endings, but it will lead to the establishment of UNATCO, which is the organization that the protagonist in the original Deus Ex served in.
Hailed as a classic, the original Deus Ex is a blend of first-person action and role-playing in a near-future world full of conspiracies and technological revolution. Nanotechnology can create cybernetic humans that are smarter, faster, and more powerful than everyone else. Yet the theme of the game is the distrust of corporations and governments that wield such power.
Deus Ex 3 is being developed by Eidos Montreal. According to the Czech article, the game will feature smarter AI opponents, with squads centered around a squad leader. Cover will play an important role in the game, as well cybernetic abilities. Jensen will have X-ray vision, as well as the ability to do "multi-kills", which let him eliminate three to four enemies quickly. He also the ability to shoot wires out of his hand, which he can use to grapple to the sides of buildings.
The article further states that the game will rely less on RPG statistics and be more of an action game, but it will still feature RPG elements. There will also be an emphasis on conversations, particularly on reading facial expressions and body language. Meanwhile, the game will feature five cities spanning the world, three of which are known: Shanghai, Detroit, and Montreal.
Deus Ex 3 is being developed for the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. The game doesn't have a hard release date of yet.

Xbox 360 owners may have gotten a first shot at The Last Remnant, but it now seems that PC owners can look forward to an improved version of the game. Over in Japan, Square Enix shared today final release details on the Japanese release of the PC version of the multiplatform RPG, revealing a host of improvements. It also shared some high res PC screenshots, which you can see in our media gallery.
While the PC version of Last Remnant will be pretty much identical to the console versions, Square Enix is adding four major improvements. Here's a summary of what's new:
High speed battle option
The game now offers a high speed battle option, presumably addressing an issue from the 360 version where some battles took over an hour.
Elimination of leader unit limits
The 360 version limited players to six unique leaders on the battle field, pulled from the game's cast of over 40. The PC version has no such limitation.
Equipment Preview
You can now get a preview image of equipment designs while in a shop or through the status screen. The 360 version let you view your equipment only during battle.
Language Option
The Japanese version of the PC release will have the option for selecting either English or Japanese voices. Text can also be switched to multiple languages.
In Japan, Last Remnant will hit the PC on April 9, priced similar to the 360 version, at 8,190 yen (about $90 US). Square Enix has yet to share specific release details for the game outside of Japan.
Prior to release, Square Enix will be offering players a demo. But before that, interested parties can download a benchmark test for the game from the Japanese official site. The benchmark is accessible via the first button with the word "Download." The "Coming Soon" button is for the upcoming demo.

Matrix Games (www.matrixgames.com) and Strategic Studies Group (www.ssg.com.au) are proud to announce the release of the new v1.1 update for Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets. This major new update includes nearly twenty significant improvements to the Kharkov game system. Among others, it adds variant units with differences in strength and OOB to the Mystery Variant system and allows entirely new "what if" formations like the 3rd Guards Rifle Corps to be part of the scenario variants. Also, the rules to refit a unit have changed to an explicit action by the player using a new refit button. Finally, the update comes with restrictions on viewing enemy OB screens have been implemented to prevent giving away the new variant unit information, along with more new features, rule tweaks, and several bug fixes.
As part of this update, SSG has also announced its future development plans, to provide a roadmap for what scenario designers and wargamers can expect in the future. Specifically, SSG plans to updates its older battles to the new game system on which Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets is based. This system, called Decisive Battles on the Eastern Front: 1941-1945, will initially accommodate a remake and update of Across the Dnepr to this new system. There are also plans to release Operation Husky, Operation Avalanche, and Operation Shingle from Battles in Italy as free scenarios based on this new game system.
David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said "SSG has some ambitious plans for the new year and we know wargamers will be excited to see what they have in store. Decisive Battles on the Eastern Front: 1941-1945 is a very solid and realistic new operational wargame system that will grow more engrossing and rich with each subsequent release and the planned free scenarios."
In Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets, you command the Soviet forces, newly confident after stopping and throwing back the Barbarossa offensive, or try the elite and seasoned German army now reconstituted after Winter losses and ready to regain the initiative. Two separate forces prepared offensives in the same area in the Spring of 1942. When the dust had cleared the Germans had managed a great victory that opened the doors to the drive on Stalingrad. But the outcome was far from certain and in Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets, history is yours to rewrite.
This new system supports both regimental and battalion level combat, while incorporating many innovative features such as off-map reinforcement decisions and on-map historical areas of operation with mystery variants to increase replayability and limit the effect of hindsight. Along with the streamlined supply and movement systems, a new bonus and advantage system for headquarters effects, simplified direct fire and improved combat tables, an improved strong points system and the ability to create hedgehog defenses make this the most advanced and realistic SSG design to date. This is the first in a new successor series to Decisive Battles, with an updated Across the Dnepr sequel already in the works!
This update is comprehensive and will bring any previous version of the game to version 1.1. Get more information on Kharkov: Disaster on the Donets from its official product page.

World of Warcraft lead designer Jeff Kaplan has revealed that two other hero classes were under serious consideration for second expansion Wrath of the Lich King - before ultimately being beaten to it by the Death Knight.
In the seventh of Blizzard's occasional podcasts, Kaplan described the Necromancer and Rune Master designs that were being kicked around.
"The class choice was super hard and eventually we had it down to three front runners," he said.
"We were talking for a while about a Necromancer. He would kind of be a range caster, do a lot of corpse explode, that sort of thing. Things we ended up incorporating into the Death Knight.
"We also had a cool idea for a Rune Master. That was going to be more of a melee type - think rogue or monk type character. But Death Knight ultimately fit."
The WOW team evidently isn't short of ideas for new class design, as producer J Allen Brack joked that "it was difficult to narrow it down from the 29 hero classes that we’ve got completed, which one we were going to go with".
The rest of the podcast is a post-mortem discussion of Wrath of the Lich King, in which Brack and Kaplan mention that new continent Northrend was one of the first zones ever prototyped for WOW. They also express their satisfaction with the new two-tier raiding system ("It seems like just the first month has really validated that decision" - Brack) and more rewarding itemisation ("greatly improved over what it was in Burning Crusade" - Kaplan), among other things.
Lore fiends will also want to check out a section in which Blizzard's story guru Chris Metzen talks about the ramifications of Wrath of the Lich King's plot developments. You can download or read the the conversations at the Blizzcast site.

What's this, more StarCraft II screenshots? Admittedly, we're a bit powerless to stop ourselves from looking at these 10 or so new images from a Fansite kit that Blizzard discreetly updated (our compatriots say only eight of these are new, but we count two more that we've never seen before).
If you take nothing else from these screens, just remember that zerg rushes still elicit a sensory overload billed directly to your occipital lobe. Latest pics are in the front of the gallery. So Blizzard, how about a public beta soon to feed our addiction?

Pirates of the Burning Sea developer Flying Lab has hoisted the sails on a casual games division. GameDaily reports that Flying Lab Casual is working on making leisure MMO games, with the first project being a "family friendly" title in partnership with Upper Deck trading card company. An official announcement of the title should be made in the next couple weeks.
Though Burning Sea has suffered a lack of subscribers post launch, at least it hasn't walked the plank, unlike some other MMOs released around the same time. Perhaps the company will have better success in the burgeoning North American casual MMO market.

t's no secret that the Windows 7 beta that's creeping about the world is generating a lot of excitement -- people want this OS, like, now. To that end, Kelly Poe of Nashville, Tennessee has started up a "Release Windows 7 Now" campaign to get Microsoft to move its behind a little faster. It hasn't gained that much steam yet -- as of this writing, he's only collected 153 votes -- but hey, you just never know, right? Right
