Mezmer Games today announced the April release of Stalin vs. Martians, developed by an alliance of three independent studios: Black Wing Foundation, Dreamlore and N-Game.
Stalin vs. Martians, as the name suggests, is a game both absolutely ridiculous and over-the-top. Fun and accessible, it takes a simple arcade-like approach to the genre of real-time strategy. The player controls the Red Army as it defends Earth from the Martian Invasion of 1942, the highly classified military operation which even today remains a closely guarded state secret. Stalin himself conducts the mission briefings, and later even becomes a playable unit.
The bold leader is duly serious even as he faces the most ridiculous threat the world has ever known. The game itself is far from standard RTS fare; this is not a realistic and deeply strategic war simulation, but a straightforward, fun and light-hearted arcade-style game complete with power-ups falling from conquered foes in the form of bright shiny coins.
Stalin vs. Martians features include:
Unique concept and design.
Fast-paced and lighthearted arcade-style real-time strategy, with power-ups, coin-collection and speedy reinforcements.
Accessible and fun, well suited even for people who don't normally play strategy games.
A single-player campaign of 12 missions.
Incredible Russian electronic soundtrack and wild music-video intermissions.
The game is scheduled for release in April 2009 as one of the first releases of Mezmer Games, the new company under Paradox Interactive that focuses on indie development.

id Software's upcoming hybrid first-person shooter Rage won't be showing up in 2009. The company's CEO Todd Hollenshead recently told Gametrailers TV, 'No, it won't be out this year,' when asked about a possible release date, and through official channels we've been told it'll be done when it's done.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, id is building Rage as a first-person shooter mixed with driving elements. For an id game, there seems to be a far greater emphasis on narrative this time around, though many parts of the title still have yet to be shown off to the press.

Mythic Entertainment today announced that it is expanding the Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) Recruit-A-Friend program in North America and Asia Pacific to now provide exciting in-game rewards for dedicated recruiters on both sides of the ongoing Realm War. The new item rewards bolster the 30 days of free play time already rewarded to players every time they bring a friend and family member into the Realm vs. Realm fray.
Anyone who recruits two new subscribers will receive an exclusive pet – the Imperial Hunting Hound for Order players, or the Warlord's Fell Hound for Destruction players. Those who recruit four new subscribers will be granted a powerful new in-game item, either the Rod of Service or the Collar of Servitude, which increases experience and renown earned by 5% for all group members. In addition, these pocket items allow a player to temporarily raise a fellow realm-mate's level to give them a fighting chance against more powerful foes.
1st recruit = 30 days free game play
2nd recruit = Exclusive in-game pet, plus another 30 days free
3rd recruit = Another 30 days free
4th recruit = Exclusive in-game item, plus another 30 days free
All additional recruits = 30 days free for each new recruit
Now is the time to heed the Call to Arms and recruit friends and family to fight at the frontlines of WAR with a free 10-day trial! For more information about the WAR Recruit-A-Friend program and rewards, visit: www.warhammeronline.com/recruit.
Based on the popular tabletop war game from Games Workshop, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning features revolutionary Realm vs. Realm conflict that will provide players with an engaging battleground for years to come. Available now for PC, WAR is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB.

Casemods range from the peculiar to the spaceage, but this one -- a pyramid PC case -- kinda takes things to the next level of outrageousness. Weighing in at 7.5 pounds (just for the case) this 25-inch high beast is not exactly compact, with a 19 x 19-inch base. Modder polo360x made it from a customized Luxor pyramid case, and, and in our opinion, it fits in nicely with his home decor choices. Check out another two shots and hit the read link for many, many more, plus a full specsheet.

A website has launched for BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams. It should be no surprise that the site raises plenty of questions about the game.
What's this 2/20/67 marking with an 'X' sitting over Ireland? What are these three clickable items in the upper-right, one of which appears to speak to the origins of the Little Sister. What is this letter written by J. Lynch and who is it written to?
Delving a bit further we learn that 2/20/67 was actually the date when Maura Lune was kidnapped from her home at age 7. The kidnapper's description bears a striking resemblance to a Big Daddy, except that he was able to outrun the girl's 42 year old father without much of a worry.
The letter from J. Lynch, written on March 18, 1967, is a bit more puzzling. He or she talks about searching the beaches every morning and the letter seems to be in response to something that talks about a possible connection between footprints and the kidnapping. "E.g. the head resembles a helmet" and "the feet could be heavy boots" are underlined in red with a picture of a Big Daddy doll enclosed. It would appear that J. Lynch agrees with the theory that the Big Daddy was indeed the kidnapper.
All of this points to the possibility that BioShock 2 is, in fact, not a prequel to BioShock 1 which took place in 1960. It seems as though it's going to at least address the origins of the Little Sister and perhaps Rapture itself. Of course, this is all just guessing at this point. We'll have to wait a bit longer for 2K Games to remove the veil a bit further.

The latest instalment in THQ's real-time strategy series Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War has topped the PC charts in six key markets around the world.
The Relic-developed title hit the number one spot in the US, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Australia, according to data compiled by NPD, GfK and GfK Chart-Track.
"We have built Dawn of War into a premier PC gaming franchise based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe," said Brian Farrell, THQ president and CEO. "We are pleased with consumers' strong response to Dawn of War II across many of our key markets and believe the game's success clearly demonstrates our primary objective of delivering high quality games with strong global appeal.
"Warhammer 40,000 is a rich and growing universe and we look forward to expanding our offerings based on this brand in the future."
The title, set in Games Workshop's dark-future universe, is a key strut in THQ's product line-up, which it will hope can help them recover from a tough financial situation.
The company previously announced that it plans to cut 600 jobs, axing the Zurich-based International office in the process, in a bid to secure its future.
Yesterday the company's share price plummeted by 10 per cent to USD 2.33.

That Windows Vista / Server 2008 Service Pack 2 that hit Release Candidate status last week? You can now download and try for yourself, should you feel inclined and not patient enough to wait for the final version that's rumored for sometime this quarter. It's available for Vista x86 and x64 platforms and Server 2008 in x86 / x64 / IA64 varieties. Of course, anyone keeping this in tuned to the going-ons at Redmond probably already installed Windows 7 beta, but if you kept Vista and want Bluetooth 2.1 support and the ability to record data to Blu-ray discs, now's your chance.

The new Mac Mini may be faster and run on less power, but it's still a bitch to take apart.
I know it was idealistic of me, but especially with the price of Apple's Mac Mini upgrade options, I was hoping that the new Mini would take design cues from Apple's latest laptops and allow for a simple way to swap out the RAM and hard drive, or at least open without the use of a putty knife.
Well, the hard drive is easy enough to access if you crack the Mini's hood, but to reach the RAM you'll still need to remove the hard drive and then the optical drive—minding more cables in the process (3) than you did with the old Mini (1).
The moral is that while swapping components is certainly possible, it's not something made any easier than before. Other than that, it was confirmed that the new Mac Mini has been upgraded with a SATA hard drive, as most of us expected.
