Later this morning NCsoft is going to announce to the world the first major expansion pack in the City of Heroes franchise since 2005's City of Villains. Called City of Heroes: Going Rogue, the new expansion will "blur the line between heroes and villains" as they travel to the parallel universe Praetoria. Praetoria is governed by Tyrant, the cruel counterpart to Patriot in the main City of Heroes universe. Heroes and villains will confront a variety of challenges in their quest to confront Tyrant and his Praetorian guards.
And while we love a good parallel dimension story, the real attraction in Going Rogue is the new alignment system that allows heroes to become villains and villains to become heroes. Heroes and villains can gradually change their alignment by undertaking certain, clearly marked missions, and by other actions and decisions made during the game.
The game's executive producer, Brian Clayton explains the appeal: "For years, players could choose between playing as a hero or a villain. Now we will present a third, malleable path where players can be affected by the results of their actions, enabling them to further develop, unveil new perspectives, and overcome new challenges."
The ambiguity of allegiance is represented by two brand new characters: "Maelstrom, a pistol-wielding hero gone rogue, and a Desdemona, a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed."
City of Heroes: Going Rogue is being developed by the Paragon Studios team, creators of the recent Mission Architect System.
