If you have children that play on the popular virtual world game Neopets, you might want to warn them of a social engineering scam gleefully targeting 12-year-old kids. Neopets users looking for rare items are sent private messages from the scammers, who direct them to sites hosting keyloggers & trojans. They then use the infected PC as a means to get to data the parents might have stored there, be it credit card details, Paypal accounts or online banking. Seeing the screenshots of some of these people talking about putting these children into botnets is just unbelievable — if ever you wanted proof that people up to no good online will go to any lengths to get their hands on some money (or even just feel good about outsmarting a 12-year-old), here it is.

Blizzard chief game designer Rob Pardo has said that there will be no LAN support in StarCraft II, as all multiplayer will go through online portal Battle.net.
"We don't have any plans to support LAN," Pardo told IncGamers. "We will not support it."
The chances of StarCraft II heading to console are equally slim, or "zero per cent", according to Pardo - as if anyone thought otherwise.
StarCraft II: Terrans - Wings of Victory, the first of three parts, launches later this year on PC.

Valve has released another update for Left 4 Dead on PC via the Steam platform, this time making a couple of tweaks to the Versus mode and squashing bug or two while they're at it.
On the Versus side, according to the patch notes, the new update removes the "Are you ready to play Versus?" confirmation, and restores the ability to vote for a new campaign during Versus play, which is nice.
Elsewhere, the patch puts right a crash glitch that occurred when using the mouse wheel or keyboard to select a campaign chapter, and "sv_steamgroup_exclusive servers advertising for public lobbies" has also been "fixed", whatever that means.
Fire up the game and your Steam connection will do the rest. Innit.

New Japanese publishing powerhouse Tecmo Koei has been open about its aspirations in the Western market, but now the firm is pointing to the ever-growing casual sector for its next strategic expansion.
“We are very interested in casual games,” Tecmo Koei president and COO Kenji Matsubara told CasualGaming.biz. “But at the same time it is a very tough market.
“Koei and Tecmo are very good at targeting core gamers. But to expand our user base, it might be worth looking at casual gamer. But we understand it’s very tough and other publishers are already established in that market.
“So at this moment our strategy is, based on our core fans, to expand into the casual games space.”
The merger between Koei and Tecmo was finalised earlier this year, and was somewhat of a surprise considering Tecmo’s prior rejection of the advances of RPG powerhouse Square Enix.
Koei is best known for its Eastern-themed tactical brawlers such as Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. Tecmo, in contrast, boasts a rich back catalogue of IP such as Bomb Jack, Rygar and GunGriffon. In recent times its best known for hardcore hits such as Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive and Fatal Frame.
With its fan base very much cemented in the core gamer bracket, the deal earlier this year to snap up the distribution rights to Disgaea and Atelier Iris developer Nippon Ichi seemed very much in line with the pair’s natural heartland.
A move into the casual sector will certainly be a departure from the norm, but considering the size of the casual bubble perhaps not a surprising one.

UK vendor the first to rule out fees for discs after Microsoft's warning to consumers
Novatech has become the first UK vendor to say that it will not charge its customers to 'upgrade' to Windows 7.
Microsoft had earlier warned that while it was not charging for upgrades, computer manufacturers may for shipping and handling.
Beginning today (June 29th), all computers purchased from the firm come with a Windows 7 redemption voucher.
"We're delighted to be able to offer all our customers an upgrade completely free of charge," commercial director Kriss Pomroy said.
Installation of Windows 7 will wipe all data on the hard drive, a spokesperson told PCR. Because of this, the Portsmouth-based firm will be running several promotions for external hard drives and USB storage media closer to the time to raise awareness and assist customers in backing up data.
Customers will be able to redeem the upgrade vouchers from August 31st, but the disc with Windows 7 on it will not be shipped before October 22nd. The company is aiming to get the discs to customers within 28 days of release.
Pomroy was full of praise for the new operating system. "The new operating system is a breath of fresh air. For the first time in five years, Windows 7 demonstrates some true innovation."

Microsoft's unleashed several guided tour videos of Windows 7 on its website. All of the videos are hosted by Latika Kirtane -- Product Manager for Internet Explorer -- who, in around two minutes, goes over some of the simplest features of Windows 7. Some of the sexier topics covered are Windows Search, setting up a home network, and the joys of parental controls. There's nothing earth-shattering that we didn't already know covered here, but you'll still probably want to check out the videos after the break, and hit the read link for all four.

A Blizzard representative today announced that they're working on a service for players to switch factions in World of Warcraft, going from Horde to Alliance or vice versa. "There's still much work to do and many details to iron out, but the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm. Players who ended up creating and leveling up characters on the opposite factions from their friends have been asking for this type of functionality for some time, and we're pleased to be getting closer to being able to deliver it." They also said there would be "some rules involved with when and how the service can be used."

InformationWeek is reporting that the Chinese government has declared a ban on the sale of virtual goods for real currency. This move is poised to shut down a several billion yuan a year business that has been growing by leaps and bounds every year.
"The trading of virtual currency for real cash employs hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and generates between $200 million and $1 billion annually, according to a 2008 survey conducted by Richard Heeks at the University of Manchester. He estimates that between 80% and 85% of gold farmers are based in China. [...] Game companies typically forbid gold farming but committed virtual currency traders find ways around such rules. Some game companies have recognized the futility of trying to ban the practice and have built virtual commerce into their game infrastructure."

There's a rather sudden change of plans if you were planning on attending QuakeCon in Dallas this August. With id Software's annual gaming base less than two months away, the company has announced a venue change from the Hilton Anatole in Dallas to the Gaylord Texan located north of Dallas. The dates of the event remain the same, though: August 13 to 16.
The Gaylord Texan was the home to QuakeCon in 2004 and 2005, but the Hilton Anatole has served as home to the event in recent years. QuakeCon is free to attend, however if you've already made a reservation at the Hilton Anatole it has been automatically cancelled, and you must make a new reservation at the Gaylord Texan at an equal or lesser rate.
According to the announcement, the Gaylord Texan offers a bigger venue that will support a larger BYOC (Bring-Your-Own-Computer) LAN party, as well as more exhibitor and entertainment space.

Mabinogi has released a slew of sunshiny features to kick off its "Summer of Fun" which includes the release of Hawaiian-style shirts, shaved ice snacks, and an Independence Day event which will add rewards and fun to Mabinogi players' adventures.
With the purchase of an Aloha Card, players can rebirth their characters (or start new characters) complete with weather appropriate clothing. This clothing includes beach print shirts and shorts as well as sandals. The Aloha Card is currently available.
Once appropriately attired, players can travel to Emain Macha to visit the NPC Gordon to receive sweet treats as part of the Mabinogi "Summer of Fun Shaved Ice Event." Players can give Gordon fruit juices and he'll make a shaved ice treat, which will bring refreshment to the players if they choose to eat it. However, to earn rewards and prizes, players can race with their shaved ice to Qilla Base Camp where an overheated Ethna is trading rewards for the cooling effects of the shaved ice. This event is underway and runs through July 9.
More rewards are available to players via the Independence Day event where general stores are selling Red, White and Blue Fireworks. When players shoot off their fireworks, rewards can come to those whose fireworks go especially high. Players will earn a box decorated with the American flag as a reward for their achievement. This event is underway and runs through July 9.
For more information about the Summer of Fun event or the free-to-play and download game, Mabinogi, go to: http://mabinogi.nexon.net/

It appears that StarCraft II will be losing one of the franchise's most popular features. In an interview with IncGamers, Rob Pardo, VP of game design indicated that LAN would not be supported for the upcoming RTS sequel. "We will not support it," he said. Instead, the only multiplayer for the game will be found through Battle.Net, Blizzard's online service that is currently being redesigned. We contacted Blizzard for confirmation and were told that it's true that StarCraft II will not support or feature LAN play at all.
While this might surprise StarCraft fans, particularly those that go to LAN centers for the competition, it's not surprising given that many of the new elements for the game seem to be tied into Battle.Net's tracking mechanics. In many ways, Battle.Net is attempting to provide improved features for players and observers alike. For example, spectators will be able to track a myriad of stats for each player within a match, including their army and economic strength, as well as see a specific build order for every unit fielded within a battle. Other features, like the new replay functionality, seem poised to take advantage of Battle.Net's community functions to upload videos and screens to the service. We covered a number of the new Battle.Net features within our recent multiplayer preview, but that only serves to underscore the point that Mr. Pardo made: StarCraft II won't have LAN support. Word from South Korea regarding their response to the lack of LAN play has yet to come in.

Blizzard's Starcraft was released in 1998. It's sequel, Starcraft II, won't be out until at least 2009. Why the hold-up? Blame World of Warcraft.
Rob Pardo has told Eurogamer that development on Starcraft II began in 2003, and there's been a playable build since 2005. But then along came World of Warcraft.
One of the reasons that StarCraft II had some delays very early on in development is because a fair amount of the design team went onto World of Warcraft for a year to really help finish that game off.
They had a lot of really great experience to bring, with their knowledge of how they approached the map editor problems, how they dealt with balancing - which we could then leverage into class balancing.
So to anyone wondering why Starcraft II looks so "old fashioned" for a 2009 game, there you go.

It's been nearly two years since we were first emabarrassed in a StarCraft II multiplayer preview, but we recently got our long-awaited shot at redemption. During the interim, we've logged countless hours with the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion (having picked up new, digial copies for a mere $15) in order to prepare for this opportunity. The bad news? We still managed to get owned. Although, in our defense, we were playing against some hardcore fansites, and the setup of Blizzard's recent hands-on event was not unlike being dropped into a televised StarCraft tournament match in Korea with an announcer saying, "Okay, and ... GO!"
That's the bad news. The good news is that StarCraft II looks simply amazing, and it plays even better. After you've pounded your brain with several hundred hours (for some of you, it's probably thousands of hours) of StarCraft, and you fire up StarCraft II, it's like being jolted by 1.21 jigawatts of mouse-clicking rapture -- which, thankfully, also numbed the pain of our ongoing losing streak

Frozenbyte has popped out a PC demo for promising platform game Trine.
The 461MB file can be downloaded from GamersHell or FileFront.
Trine, which is also in development for PSN and XBLA, is a side-scrolling physics-focused platformer. The twist comes when using three unique characters to solve puzzles and progress through levels.
The nimble thief Zoya can leap and grapple and shoot arrows, for example, while the sturdy knight Pontius is at his best pummelling baddies up close. Amadeus the wizard, on the other hand, can push, pull, levitate and conjure blocks.
So keen on Trine are we that we offered our in-depth hands-on impressions of Trine back in May, and will have a review very soon.
Finnish developer Frozenbyte (Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds Survivor) said the PSN version would be out in June, but time is ticking away. The official website only lists Q2 2009 as the date.
According to our review code, however, the PC version of the game is due out on 10th July.

Fansite Champions Online Daily News reports that Crytpic's superhero MMO will go into open beta testing in mid-August.
The site picked up the info on a visit to Cryptic HQ, and the developer subsequently put the stamp of authority on the news with an official link.
"A firm date has been pencilled in and although it's not 100 per cent confirmed, it is slap bang in the middle of August," said the fansite.
That would put it a couple of weeks ahead of the game's launch on PC, on September 1st in North America and September 4th in Europe. An Xbox 360 launch is currently scheduled for later in the year.
Champions Online is currently in closed beta testing. Check out the Champions Online gamepage for hands-on impressions and more.
