One Microsoft Way is reporting that Microsoft has significantly incremented the build number of both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: 'Reports across the Web are pointing to a build 7600 for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. This is significant because the bump in the build number would suggest that Microsoft has christened this build as the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. The RTM is expected to be given out to Microsoft partners sometime later this month and launched on October 22, 2009, the day of General Availability (GA). The build string is "7600.16384.090710-1945," which indicates that it was compiled just a few days ago: July 10, 2009, at 7:45pm. Microsoft only increments the build number when it reaches a significant goal, and the only one left is the RTM milestone. The last builds that were leaking were all 72xx builds, so such a large bump is suspicious but at the same time it is something Microsoft would do to signify that this is the final build

There has been no official announcement yet, but a number of moves by Blizzard Entertainment seem to indicate that the next expansion for World of Warcraft could be titled Cataclysm. Speculation began when Blizzard trademarked Cataclysm recently, and then later when a test server briefly popped up with the word 'Maelstrom' in its name. If true, the name would fall neatly into the WoW lore and expected expansion list. The Cataclysm is another name for the Great Sundering, an event that created a swirling vortex of water and mystical energies (the 'Maelstrom') that has appeared on the world map in-game since release. There are also indications that early design work included some of the islands in this area, which has long fueled anticipation of a Maelstrom-based expansion involving the former Night Elf noble, Azshara, queen of the Naga and the Goblins whose main city is in the south seas

It's time for everyone's favorite semiannual event! ScummVM Release Testing Season (TM)! However, this season we will be testing for 1.0.0! That's right, 1.0.0!
For this release, we have added support for a bunch of new games: Cruise for a Corpse, Discworld, Discworld 2 - Missing Presumed ...!?, Leather Goddesses of Phobos 2, The Manhole, Return to Zork, and Rodney's Funscreen.
As usual, go grab a daily build of ScummVM, play through the games and submit any bugs you see along the way to the bug tracker. When you complete a game, report it on the forums so we can add it to our release testing wiki page. Be sure to provide the version, language, and platform of the game you're testing (in addition to the name of course). You can find more details on testing over here.

There'll be few of you that don't know that the daily build of ScummVM has supported the first two Discworld games for some time now. Despite the stability of the engine, we held off announcing official support, since we were hoping to be able to simultaneously announce the freewaring of the game titles.
Since it seems unlikely the two games will be freewared in time for the next major release, it's been decided to go ahead and officially announce support for the games. The PC versions of the first two games are fully supported, and the PSX version of the Discworld 1 game is completable (but without music currently).
Those of you who haven't already played them can do so with the daily build of ScummVM, report all encountered bugs to our bug tracker and submit some nice screenshots.

Edge Online today reported that Remedy's Alan Wake may not be released for the PC. The PC version of the game, which had long been promised, is now, according to the game's lead writer, Sam Lake, "up in the air and open" while the studio focuses on completing the 360 version. Lake went on to say, "Once we get this version done [for the 360], we'll see."
Alan Wake has been in development for five years now and has lately enjoyed a renewed visibility, thanks to some impressive Xbox 360 demos at this year's E3.
When contacted earlier today, the game's publisher, Microsoft, did not offer us a response to the story.

Spiderweb Software, Inc. announced today the upcoming release of Avernum 6, the final game in the epic, award-winning Avernum series. Avernum 6 is set in the world of Avernum, an enormous series of caves far below the surface of the world. Travel into the strange subterranean la nd of Avernum, full of dungeons, labyrinths, and constant warfare.
Avernum is a world underground. It is a nation of people living in an enormous warren of tunnels and caverns, far below the surface of the world. Once a prison colony for rebels and thugs, it is now a wild frontier, full of adventurous souls looking for wealth, fame, and magical power.
And then the Blight came. Almost overnight, the mushrooms Avernum needed to feed itself withered and died. Then the denizens of the low tunnels, the savage, reptilian Slithzerikai, emerged. Sensing weakness, they struck, destroying much of a weakened Avernum and creating waves of hungry, desperate refugees.
This final set of disasters threatens to destroy your homeland in a spasm of famine and warfare. Only you can help your people to get to safety before everything falls apart.
Avernum 6 is the final game in the popular and long-running Avernum series. Explore a gigantic world, with a fascinating storyline, hundreds of quests, multitudes of side dungeons, and many hours of adventure. The game features completely redone graphics, clever enemies and dozens of wild scripted encounters. Learn over 50 spells and battle disciplines. Hunt for hundreds of magical items or craft your own powerful artifacts. Avernum 5 will be out for Macintosh in late 2009 and Windows in early 2010.

Nexon America is proud to celebrate the first anniversary of its multiplayer online first-person shooter title, Combat Arms, this month.
Combat Arms delivered a load of new content during its first year. The game has added 10 new maps, four new game modes, over a dozen new characters, over 100 weapons and gear. There have been over 30 special items as well, including clan emblems, customized reticles, bonus passes and default weapon changes. The game has also added a gifting system, new voice audio, an improved melee system and several user interface and playability enhancements. And of course, Combat Arms added the popular and unique game feature, Nutshot.
Nexon America has welcomed over two million registered users into Combat Arms and uncovered some other remarkable fun facts about what's happened since the game launched last July.
Over 3.2 billion soldiers have been killed in action.
Over 517 million of those casualties were caused by headshots
27 million Nutshots have been inflicted since April Fool's Day 2009.
Over one million games played per day since launching last July.
Over 154 million terrorists have been eliminated since Fireteam Mode was released at the end of May 2009.
Over 35 million flags have been captured.
Over four million bombs have been planted of which three million have exploded.

Soldiers have earned 66 billion GP, which is enough to buy every weapon and piece of gear from the shop to last many lifetimes.
Nexon America is celebrating this anniversary with several different events. Players will enjoy bonus play during the July weekends, offering the opportunity to receive bonus EXP and GP. There is also a photo contest with the chance to win limited-edition Nutshot T-shirts and GP. Go to http://combatarms.nexon.net for more information on these great player events during July.

In a blog post on the Star Wars: The Old Republic website, director of audio and localization Shauna Perry talks about the challenge of recording voice overs for every character in a massively-multiplayer universe.
When they first announced that The Old Republic would be fully-voiced during E3 2009, those of us involved in the more massively-multiplayer side of gaming collectively gasped. The average MMO title has players interacting with hundreds of different characters over the course of the game. Providing real voices for each of those characters as well as the player characters themselves is a monumental task.
As I said, The Old Republic is the size of at least 10 KOTORs recorded back to back. Basically, it takes a very large team all focused on the same outcome - producing the most VO assets ever produced at the highest quality possible. There are dedicated internal teams at both LucasArts and BioWare, and externally, there are also multiple studio audio engineers and post production teams. On any given day, there can be over a dozen people working specifically on The Old Republic voice-over and that doesn't include any actors!
And there are hundreds of actors working on the project, with recording spanning four cities - Los Angeles , London, New York, San Francisco, and Toronto. The most staggering statistic? When last we checked, the game had surpassed the amount of dialog in the entire run of The Sopranos. According to Perry, the script for the game as it now stands contains enough material for more than 40 Star Wars novels. That's completely insane.
Check out the full blog post to get an idea of how much work poor Shauna is being put through in order to make Star Wars: The Old Republic the most talkative MMO ever created.

Bethesda has dusted off The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall and made it available as a free download.
It's to celebrate the series' 15th anniversary, don't you know. Daggerfall was first released in 1996, so don't expect flashy HD graphics or any such new-fangled nonsense. You'll need an emulator, but the download page will point you in the right direction.
Daggerfall is so old it predates Eurogamer so we don't have a review in the archives. But here's one we've just made up based on the game's wikipedia entry: Full of bugs. Looks like it was made in 1996. You can be a werewolf though. Also it has tits. 10/10.

BioWare boss Ray Muzyka has told G4tv that George Lucas is keeping his eye on the studio's Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic.
"I haven't shown it to him personally, no," said Muzyka, "but I know he keeps his finger on the pulse of everything that LucasArts is working on, so I know he's involved in it. I've talked to him about the project in the past and I know he's excited about it."
We already know that Lucas is "a big fan" of Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies but has never played World of Warcraft.
BioWare caused a sensation at E3 with its cinematic trailer for the game, but Muzyka couldn't say whether it had received the elusive potentate's blessing.
"I can't say what he thought of the trailer because I don't know for sure that he's seen it," said EA's newly-minted RPG overlord, "but I imagine he has because he's very involved in the development side of things."

Ars Technica reports that Microsoft has opened up about "Gazelle," a new browser prototype of theirs that is modeled after the underlying concepts of operating system design.
"A research team led by Microsoft's Helen Wang recently published a report about an experimental browser prototype called 'Gazelle' that uses processes to isolate page content elements originating from different domains. It builds on the concept of multiprocess browsing but uses more fine-grained isolation to expand on the security advantages that are already delivered by existing multiprocess browsing models. But is it an operating system, Microsoft Research's analogue to Google's Chrome OS? Not quite."

Many different sources are reporting that Microsoft has unleashed the third major version of Silverlight to the masses. With 3.0 we see things like better 3D graphics support, the ability to offload tasks to a GPU, and the ability to run apps outside of the browser.
"Silverlight's video capabilities have always been impressive when compared to Flash, and the new version boasts some new features that should keep the competition with Flash hot. It uses a media broadcasting technology Microsoft calls Smooth Streaming, an adaptive technology for playing the same H.264 video stream at the highest bitrate the device and its bandwidth limitations will allow. So if you've got a fast computer with an HD monitor and a wide open pipe, you'll see super high quality video at up to full 1080p HD. If you've got a dinky smartphone with mid-level data service, you'll see a constrained version of the same video."

Following the statement from Activision that its forthcoming shooter Singularity will be delayed to 2010, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia believes that the same fate is likely to befall Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty.
The Blizzard title, currently slated for an October 2009 release, saw the launch of its beta version delayed recently, leading Bhatia to believe that it "increasingly appear[s]" the final game will also be delayed, reports the Wall Street Journal.
However, thanks to the presence of Modern Warfare 2 on the slate, analysts don't believe that any delays to Starcraft 2 will hurt Activision too much, and arguably it would instead offer a significant boost during a quieter Q1 2010.
Blizzard declined to comment on the story. The company is currently gearing up for its annual Blizzcon event, which will take place in Anaheim in August, while the company is currently developing World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and another unnamed MMO title.

While Chrome OS is still a pretty rough sketch in our mind's eye, the Google boys have hosted a press conference to answer a few burning questions. Among the myriad revelations, it turns out Eric Schmidt wasn't stoked on building a browser when Sergey Brin and Larry Page brought it up about six years ago, given the fact that Google was still relatively small, and the browser wars were still fresh in everyone's minds. After he saw an early build of Chrome, however, he changed his tune. He says Chrome and Chrome OS are "game-changers," and Larry describes Chrome OS as the "anti-operating system" and indistinguishable from a browser.
Luckily, they also hinted at some native development possibility (hopefully) outside of the browser, stating that Microsoft is free to build a version of Internet Explorer for Chrome OS if they'd like, and that it's an open source project. According to Eric: "Even if we had an evil moment, we would be unsuccessful." He also mentioned there were plenty of "commonalities" between Chrome OS and Android, and that the two might grow even closer over time. Interesting. As for his role on Apple board, Eric will be working out with those folks as to when he needs to recuse himself from OS talk like he already does with iPhone talk. Most of the rest of the talk was spent making old person digs at Schmidt, Mr. BlackBerry himself.
