AMD's Neo ultra-portable platform was seen as something that just might rival Intel's mighty Atom in the oversaturated netbook space when it debuted back in January, but up until now, the system has remained largely in the background. Indeed, it has only found its way into a select few machines, none of which have managed to gain any sort of traction beside the sea of Atom-based alternatives. Now, however, it seems as if the chips -- which were originally engineered for ultraslim, thin-and-light laptops -- may find themselves shoved into an array of nettops and all-in-one PCs. Here lately, a slew of underpowered SFF-type desktops and PC-in-a-monitor type units have found favor with bargain hunters, and Bob Grim, the outfit's director of client marketing, isn't looking to miss a golden opportunity. To quote:
"We've known all along that this type of technology would really work well in multiple platforms and multiple types of form factors. These CPUs perform better than the Atom processor, and the graphics are superior. These things... can play Blu-rays, they can play games."
There's still no word on who exactly plans on equipping their future machines with this here platform, but considering just how tired we are of Intel's sluggish N270 and N280, we'll take all the competition we can get.

With the advent of forge.mil, etc. the military seems to be getting on board with free and open source software. A working group meeting is going to be held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, August 12-13, 2009. There's a pretty good lineup of speakers including a Marine from the Iraq-Marine Expeditionary Forces, who was on the ground and saw the agility open source gave to him and his soldiers. A number of OSS projects are going to be meeting there: Delta 3D, OpenCPI, FalconView, OSSIM, Red Hat, etc. Looks like there will be some good discussions

Discover Magazine reports that although medical simulations have been around for a long time, medical schools like Imperial College London are starting to use virtual hospitals in Second Life so students can learn their way around an O.R. before they enter the real thing. The students can also test their knowledge in the Virtual Respiratory Ward by interviewing patient avatars, ordering tests, diagnosing problems, and recommending treatment. 'The real innovation in SL clinical simulations is that they bring people together in a clinical space — you are standing next to an avatar who is a real patient, and the doctor avatar to your right is a resident at Massachusetts General Hospital and the nurse to your left is at the University of Pennsylvania hospital,' says John Lester, the Education and Healthcare Market Developer at Linden Labs. The most significant benefit of SL training may be the cost. Real-life training facilities require thousands, and sometimes millions of dollars to build and maintain, while SL simulation rooms can be created for minimal costs, and accessed from anywhere in the world for the price of an internet connection. SL can also expose students to situations that a standard academic program can't duplicate: 'You can take risks that aren't safe in the real world and teach more complex subjects in three dimensions,' says Colleen Lin. 'When you're resuscitating a dummy in real life, it looks like a dummy. But you can program an avatar to look like it's choking or having a heart attack, and it looks more real to the student responsible for resuscitating it.

You've probably fought through all of the maps and slaughtered your fair share of zombies in World at War. Today, Treyarch announced the release of a patch for the PC that updates the game to version 1.5 and adds additional content. First of all, the patch includes Map Pack 2, which adds three new maps (Banzai, Corrosion and Sub Pens) along with one new zombie level called Shi No Numa, which also features a new weapon called the Wunderwaffe DG-2, new traps and flaming Hell Hounds. Along with the maps comes a number of fixes, such as improving zombie paths and player model errors. On top of this, the Mod Tools 1.3 package has been released as well, allowing players to instantly work on including the new elements from the new Shi No Numa zombie level into their maps. You can receive the new 1.5 patch at FilePlanet, or receive the auto-update from Steam.

Paradox Interactive and Nitro Games today announced the launch of the official pre-order pack for upcoming real-time strategy game East India Company. The "Pirate Bay" bonus campaign will be included in all pre-orders via GamersGate, Steam, Impulse and Direct2Drive.
The "Pirate Bay" campaign starts in 1650 and gives players control over a frigate and level 2 pirate captain (commander) with the skills "Feared" and "Rout." At the start of the game, the player fleet is located in the pirate port in northern Madagascar.
"The Pirate Bay Campaign will allow gamers to play for a faction used to looting what others have worked hard for, rather than creating anything of value themselves," explains Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. "It will be an interesting challenge for gamers to put themselves in the shoes of these mischievous wrong-doers rather than the heralded heroes."
"East India Company did not originally have pirates as a playable faction as we wanted to concentrate on the actual companies. However, we received an incredible amount of feedback from people who told us how much they would love to play as pirates. It became clear that the best way to implement pirates as a playable faction was to make a separate campaign for them. The best part about the campaign is that you can actually compete against other players and find out who's the best pirate by uploading your points to the EIC homepage afterwards," said Kim Soares, lead designer of Nitro Games.
East India Company is scheduled to be in stores on July 31, 2009 with a SRP of $39.99 / €39.99 / £34.99. Read more about the game at http://www.eic-game.com.

July 18th, 2009, 23:31 Posted By: wraggster
Artix Entertainment, with over 85 million gamer accounts for their four game titles, today announced the launch of WarpForce, its fifth game and first AE expansion.
"WarpForce is our first expansion," said Tony Deller, Project Lead, WarpForce. "Just like AdventureQuest, this is a single-player, turn-based, Flash-animated experience. We are taking the humor and action of the original AdventureQuest and moving it out into space, building on the mythology of AdventureQuest's first major story arc (called the Devourer Saga). Monsters, space battles, and puns will abound!"
WarpForce is a massive single-player storyline about the people of Lore (Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and a reptilian race called Drakel) who band together to create a fleet of starships powered by science and magic. The starships engage in outer space missions to vanquish a vast and powerful alien network poised to take over the universe. The game takes ideas of traditional fantasy and rockets them into a Sci-Fi universe, combining classic RPG elements with the hallmark Artix Entertainment humor.
According to Mr. Deller, "Even though WarpForce is an expansion, it is also a complete game by itself, and able to be played and followed from the beginning even if you have never played AdventureQuest. And just like AdventureQuest, WarpForce will be an evolving game with ongoing updates."
WarpForce begins on the world of Lore filled with warriors, dragons, wizards, and all types of fantastic creatures.
WarpForce unlocks as the player levels up (much like a console game), becoming more powerful by increasing stats and getting advanced equipment. Players choose among several races (each with benefits) and dynamically change equipment during fast-paced, animated battles. Players are able to combine their efforts in large wars and crossover events.
Players can visit www.warpforce.com to get more game details.

You may be sick of hearing about the extensive work BioWare is putting into supplying the voices for the countless characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Even if that's the case, you should still watch the video posted after the jump -- in addition to boasting about the game's beefy vocals, it shows the brief gameplay demo we got to see at E3. Watch as a Sith and a Bounty Hunter wreck shop up on an Imperial vessel, and just try not to get all antsy for this game. If you can pull that off, we're revoking your nerd card.

QuakeCon organisers have announced the 2009 tournament schedule for the Dallas shooterthon and said that matches will be broadcast live on the internet.
USD 50,000 is up for grabs in Quake Live match-ups. The Intel Quake Live Masters Championship is a one-on-one double-elimination affair for 64 professional players, with the final duo going at it live on the main stage on Saturday 14th August. The prize pot is more than USD 25,000.
Then there's the Intel Quake Live Open Tournament, in which 128 amateur players fight over a USD 2500 purse, with a USD 1500 prize for the winner. Each match is best-of-three games and single-elimination.
Finally there's the Quake Live Capture the Flag Championship, which is sponsored by id Software itself, and worth USD 22,000. Four-versus-four single-elimination matches for 32 teams will decide the outcome.
As for the live streaming, it will be handled by QuadV.com and djWHEAT.tv, and include live match coverage, player interviews and analysis.
We should be at QuakeCon once again, hopefully clapping eyes (and, if at all possible, hands) on id's upcoming Rage, and speaking to the developer's legendary line-up including coding supremo John Carmack. More than 6000 attendees are expected at the free, four-day convention in mid-August.

Over the last three years, the laptop has been undergoing a revolution - and a new lighter, cheaper, stripped-down version has taken hold.
These light and portable "netbooks" were first inspired by the charitable One Laptop Per Child project.
The scheme aimed to put low-cost computers into the hands of people in developing countries.
Taiwanese PC maker Asus was the first to realise people in developed countries could also benefit from netbooks.
A laptop XO from the One Laptop Per Child Project for developing countries
The firm's Eee PC managed to buck the recession with increasing sales when sales of bigger laptops and desktop computers dropped off.
Catch attention
Because they cost less than standard laptops, price has been a big factor in netbooks' rising popularity.
The lightweight devices offer consumers the ability to do simple tasks on the move such as word processing and web surfing.
High-performance processors are eschewed in favour of components that weigh less and use less battery power.
The extra portability, touch-screens, and near full-size keyboards are some of the benefits that have also caught the attention of more affluent users.
No 'familiarity'
The first generation of netbooks were shipped with a Linux operating system which was simple and lightweight to run.
But users soon started to install Microsoft software, and Windows XP became the operating system (OS) of choice for netbooks.
You are going to be looking at a netbook operating system that loads within a few seconds
Nate Lanxon, CNET UK
Nate Lanxon, from technology website CNET UK, said the problem was one of familiarity.
"One of the problems is that people don't have the familiarity with Linux as they do with Windows," he said. "They buy a Linux netbook… can't install their applications, so get XP on there."
Hot competition
Microsoft is currently working on a lighter version of Windows 7 especially designed to run on netbooks.
"It's basically a stripped-down version of Windows 7, so you won't be able to change your desktop wallpaper, you won't have Windows Media Centre installed and it won't play back DVD movies," explained Mr Lanxon.
Microsoft is working on a version of Windows 7 for netbooks
"But it means they can see it on a cheap netbook without having to inflate the cost of a machine."
However, Google is ratcheting up the competition by announcing it will launch a simple, fast-booting, web-centric operating system.
The netbook version of Google Chrome OS is expected to be released in the second half of 2010.
"You are going to be looking at a netbook operating system that loads within a few seconds, gets you checking your e-mail very quickly and browsing the web," explained Mr Lanxon.
He added that Chrome, like Linux, could be affected by users not being familiar with how it works and choosing to install alternative software.

Red Hat has made it onto the S&P 500, an important measure of the stock market. It is replacing CIT, which is expected to go bankrupt after the government refused to bail them out. Red Hat is the first Linux company to make it on to the S&P 500. While this means little directly for the company, it is an indication of the importance Linux is taking on in the world.

Despite what you've heard, the online version of Office 2010 announced by Microsoft earlier this week won't be free to corporate users. Business customers will either have to pay a subscription fee or purchase corporate access licenses (CALs) for Office in order to be given access to the online application suite (Microsoft already does this with email — the infamous Outlook Web Access). But wait — there's more! A Microsoft spokesperson told me that customers will need to buy a SharePoint server, which ranges from $4,400 plus CALs, or $41,000 with all CALs included, if they want to share documents created using the online version of Office 2010

A new flaw in the latest release of the Linux kernel gives attackers the ability to exploit NULL pointer dereferences and bypass the protections of SELinux, AppArmor and the Linux Security Module. Brad Spengler discovered the vulnerability and found a reliable way to exploit it, giving him complete control of the remote machine. This is somewhat similar to the magic that Mark Dowd performed last year to exploit Adobe Flash. Threatpost.com reports: 'The vulnerability is in the 2.6.30 release of the Linux kernel, and in a message to the Daily Dave mailing list Spengler said that he was able to exploit the flaw, which at first glance seemed unexploitable. He said that he was able to defeat the protection against exploiting NULL pointer dereferences on systems running SELinux and those running typical Linux implementations.

Japanese researchers at KDDI have spliced two technologies that didn't seem to have much of a future in the wireless realm -- USB and Infrared -- and come up with a method for achieving transmission speeds of up to 1Gbps. Their innovation is in overcoming a latency problem that until now prevented USB 2.0 transmissions from being converted into Infrared signals and then back into electronic form. While still very early in the development and standardization process, this is a tantalizing premise, especially with ever-increasing storage capacities in portable devices. The new communication medium, which admittedly sounds a lot like irSimple, will be demonstrated for the first time at the Wireless Japan 2009 exhibition later this month, but we wouldn't hold out hope for an imminent release.

It wasn't too hard to see this one coming, but Microsoft has now officially rolled out the beta version of Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 which, among other things, brings with it a slew of new features that tie into Windows 7. That includes support for full image backup of Windows 7 PCs, Windows 7 libraries support for shared media folders, built-in Windows Search 4, and a number of Windows Media Center enhancements, as well as "better support for netbook computers," although Microsoft doesn't seem to have elaborated too much on that. No word on a release date for the non-beta version just yet, but Microsoft is apparently hoping to get it out in advance of Windows 7 -- and, yes, it will be a free update for current Windows Home Server users.

Massively is running an article discussing the trend in recent MMOs to enable and encourage solo play. Where the genre's early offerings, like Everquest and Ultima Online, were heavily dependent on finding other people to interact with, it's common for today's games to allow players to experience most of the content by themselves. Quoting:
"It is human nature to want to be the center of attention or at least feel like the hero on some level. It's also not too far of a stretch to call members of our species generally selfish. How can you really deliver this experience if you force your players to ask for help all the time? I think this was simply a natural progression of the genre in trying to appeal to our natural traits. ... Finally, I believe it all comes down to the mighty dollar. Audiences grew and so followed the market and competition. Suddenly, you couldn't make MMOs on the cheap anymore (though a stalwart few still try). Not only are game studios focused on appealing to the solo casual gamer to maximize earnings, they also want to build in artificial time sinks to make players stick around.

Microsoft Store webpage goes down, promotional pricing no longer available
The pre-order discount deal on Windows 7 has sold out less than two days after it began.
According to Sitepoint, most of Microsoft’s retail partners exhausted stocks within the first eight hours of trading, while Amazon has already exceeded the amount of Vista copies that it sold during its entire 17 week pre-order sales period.
Many visitors to the Microsoft online store were greeted with a multilingual message that said: “Due to the eagerly anticipated Windows 7 pre-order offer we're experiencing a higher level of demand on our website than usual. This means you can't access the site right now and we're sorry about that.”
A visit to the Microsoft store today will show the message that the promotional pricing is no longer available.
Although Microsoft has yet to comment on the pre-order sales directly, it told Silicon.com that it was “excited with the great response from US and international consumers for the Windows 7 pre-order discount program.”
