Halloween has come early for Linux-loving gamers in the form of the scary Penumbra game trilogy, which has just recently been ported natively to GNU-Linux by the manufacturer, Frictional Games. The Penumbra games, named Overture, Black Plague and Requiem, are first-person survival horror and physics puzzle games which challenge the player to survive in a mine in Greenland which has been taken over by a monstrous infection/demon/cthulhu-esque thing. The graphics, sounds, and plot are all admirable in a scary sort of way. The protagonist is an ordinary human with no particular powers at all, who fumbles around in the dark mine fighting zombified dogs or fleeing from infected humans. But the game is remarkable for its physics engine — rather than just bump and acquire, the player must use the mouse to physically turn knobs and open doors; and the player can grab and throw pretty much anything in the environment. The physics engine drives objects to fly and fall exactly as one would expect. The porting of a game with such a deft physics engine natively to Linux might be one of the most noteworthy events for GNU-Linux gamers since the World of Goo Linux port

Reality Gap, Inc., the creators of MetaTIX, a turnkey billing system for online gamers and virtual worlds, today announced that its upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), Monato Esprit, will launch commercially on Thursday, July 16th. Monato Esprit allows users to play the game and level their characters for free, with the option of using MetaTIX for player trades, premium content and in-game purchases. Players can experience Monato Esprit and learn more about MetaTIX by downloading the game at www.monatoesprit.com.
Monato Esprit is a fantasy role-playing game in which players assume the role of winged Archons whose mission is to rid the Dreamworld of an invasion by nightmares. As a unique component of the game, players control the economy by having the exclusive right to sell items in the stores, commanding non-player characters (NPCs) to charge tolls, and performing alchemy to create custom magic items.
"We are excited to be able to present gamers with the official launch of Monato Esprit," said Michael Williams, CEO of Reality Gap, Inc. "However, players should remember that this is a living, breathing product, and one that will continue to evolve over time. The Dreamworld you see today will not be the one you see in six months. Fans will find new ways to master spells and combat abilities, complete quests, form guilds, as well as participate in the new and robust player-driven economy with MetaTIX."
MetaTIX is a "virtual currency" players can use to pay for things in place of using real money. Players can buy tix, win tix, trade for tix, or receive tix through sponsorships.
Williams continued, "What makes MetaTIX so unique is that other online games and websites can sign up to use MetaTIX through Reality Gap's affiliate program, basically ensuring that as more players and online games use this business model, the more valuable MetaTIX will become in the virtual and online world."

July 17th, 2009, 00:17 Posted By: wraggster
Frogster America today revealed a new map outlining the areas from the forthcoming Runes of Magic Chapter II - The Elven Prophecy. The new areas are part of the game's first free content expansion, which the company is calling chapters, which also feature new quests, items, storylines and epic encounters. More than 1.5 million registered players will gain access to Chapter II's content this September as the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) continues to redefine the standard for free-to-play games.
The first territory that players will travel through is the already announced 'Weeping Coast' in north east Taborea. The 'Savage Lands' territory lies further to the west. The region is surrounded by a vast rainforest which serves as the home of the Elves. Their settlements lie at a dizzying height in the tops of the huge trees. But the Naga have also established themselves in several small supply outposts in the 'Savage Lands,' from where they plan their attacks on the Elves.
It's hot in the far northwest of the continent. The 'Aotulia Volcano' is a massive volcano and also gives its name to the region. An ash-filled sky awaits players who venture into the shadows of the fire spewing mountain. In ancient lore, the mountain, which has been spewing fire and lava for 150 years, was also called 'Claw of the Demon Dragon,' hinting at a well-protected secret lying deep within the 'Aotulia Volcano.'
A more peaceful place is the Elven Island, which is located far to the east off the coast of Taborea. It serves as a place for education of the young Elves. This is where they not only refine their combat skills, but also make diplomatic connections with humankind on the mainland. With the incorporation of the Elves as a playable race, adventurers will be able to set foot on the island for the very first time and in the new race's starting territory, learn all that is required for a successful career as a hero.

This is one of those utilitarian posts where there's not a whole lot more information to impart to you after you've read the headline. Resident Evil 5. PC. Sept. 15. Fin.
OK, well, we guess we could tell you that you can run the PC version in stereoscopic 3D with GeForce 3D Vision glasses. There are also new costumes and an improved mercenaries mode with three times as many not-zombies to murder.
See, that other stuff was barely enough for a paragraph. However, this has now become a not inconsiderable block of text, and we feel perfectly comfortable moving on, confident that you, the reader, have gotten your money's worth. Good day.

Dave Jones, boss of Crackdown developer RealTime Worlds, has said that although his next title APB is a server-based game, it still needs to ship on a standard retail disc.
Users aren't yet ready to download full console titles said Jones, and although his company is prepared for the inevitable digital distribution of content, he's not going to be actively encouraging that new market.
"At the end of the day, we still have effectively a big client to distribute," he told VG247. "It's still a traditional game in that this is a five or six gig game. It has to ship on a DVD.
"Are we at the point yet where we feel comfortable that people want to bypass retail completely and download five or six gigs? No, we're not really comfortable with that.
"If that points comes in the future, which everyone's talking about, I think we'll be reactive to that. We won't try to be proactive in trying to make that happen," he added.
Jones gave a keynote speech this week at the Develop conference in Brighton, revealing that the company has considered multiple new and emerging business models, but for RealTime Worlds, the "big dollars" are still very much in the traditional home console market.

Project Natal technology could be available for PC in little over a year, Bill Gates has revealed in an interview.
The former Microsoft CEO name-checked the depth-sensing camera hardware shown running on Xbox 360 for the first time at this year's E3 as one of the most exciting projects currently being worked on by the company.
"I was over at the Cambridge lab a few weeks ago - over at the India lab as part of a trip I take this month - and that's really the sort of crown jewel in terms of always feeding neat new things into Microsoft," Gates told CNET. "I'd say a cool example of that, that you'll see is kind of stunning, in a little over a year, is this depth-sensing camera thing. Not just for games, but for media consumption as a whole."
Although the Natal technology was brought into the spotlight through a gaming demo by Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux, Gates talks of its potential in an office capacity saying that running on a Windows PC it can offer users all sorts of options for meeting, collaboration and communication.
Not only that, but the price of the finished product could make it a realistic addition for "most" offices, according to Gates.
"I think the value is as great for if you're in the home, as you want to manage your movies, music, home system type stuff, it's very cool there. And I think there's incredible value as we use that in the office connected to a Windows PC. So Microsoft research and the product groups have a lot going on there, because you can use the cost reduction that will take place over the years to say, 'Why shouldn't that be in most office environments?'"

In order to ensure Windows 7 got off to a better start than Vista in the UK, Microsoft slashed the cost of Home and Home Professional by a third on promotional copies which were sold on a 'first come, first served basis while stocks last.' The promotion ensured Windows 7 shot to the top of Amazon's charts when it was released yesterday, with the online retailer claiming that 'sales in the first eight hours outstripped those of Windows Vista's entire 17-week pre-order period.' The price of pre-ordering Windows 7 has now shot up to £80, after the £50 copies sold out within a day.

Fansite Brightfalls.net is reporting that Finnish company Remedy Entertainment has stopped work on the PC version of Alan Wake and is now solely focused on developing the Xbox 360 version. Whether or not a PC version is released is now Microsoft's decision. The developer, which scored its first big hit with the PC exclusive Max Payne, originally announced Alan Wake for the PC and next generation consoles back in 2005, before a publisher had been determined.
We've contacted Microsoft for comment, but they have not yet responded.

Developer Keen Software House has announced its first project, an Xbox Live Arcade and PC game called Miner Wars. Set in outer space and beneath the surface of distant planets, Miner Wars offers both a single-player and an MMO experience. Environments will be destructible, and players must pilot an advanced mining vessel in order to dig tunnels, harvest ore, discover alien artifacts, and blast enemies. Many types of missions must be completed, including "rescue, exploration, revenge, base defense, theft, transportation, stealth, search and destroy, pure harvesting, racing or just flying around and destroying everything you see." Some missions are single-player, and some are multiplayer.
In the year 2061 space mining has become a major priority for explorers. Players control adventurer Marco Polo, after he and his brother, Mario Polo, are attacked by a group of Space Peace Activists. The Activists are apparently a bunch of hippies who don't want man drilling in outer space. There are many factions, corporations, and black market dealers players can join up with.
Miner WarsThe open world is persistent and is made up of millions of kilometers of space. Keen says you can dig a tunnel, fly off somewhere else, and return a month later to find your work still there – if another player hasn't messed with it.
The Miner Wars will begin this fall.

LucasArts today announced that The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is now available on Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Steam, Valve Corporation's delivery and management platform for the PC, and Direct2Drive, IGN Entertainment's digital download store.
Back by popular demand, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition faithfully re-imagines the internationally-acclaimed classic game (originally released in 1990) for old and new audiences alike. The development team at LucasArts has brought the game into the modern era with all-new HD graphics, a re-mastered musical score, full voiceover, and an in-depth hint system has been added to help players through the game's side-splitting puzzles. The game's twisty plot leads hero, Guybrush Threepwood, on a hilarious quest throughout the fabled Monkey Island. Tales of pirate wealth attract Guybrush, who lands at the port of Melee with high hopes, no money and an insatiable desire to become a pirate. If the player is clever enough, Guybrush will win the confidence of M?l?e's established pirates and soon find himself blown by the winds of fate toward Monkey Island -- a storied isle whose name alone chills the bones of even the most bloodthirsty buccaneers.

Most visitors to seaside sand dunes are there to swim and lounge on the beach; in the Netherlands, hard on the North Sea, they come to Circuit Park Zandvoort to race cars. Under the terms of an agreement jointly announced today by Exploitatie Circuit Park Zandvoort B.V. and iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations, LLC, drivers from all over the world will be able to experience the challenge of this classic European road-racing facility and compete with each other in organized races there just by logging onto the iRacing motorsport simulation service over the internet.
"The last Dutch Grand Prix was held in 1985, but as the host to 30 editions of the race, Zandvoort has more than its share of history," said Divina Galica, iRacing's director of partner relations. "We're very pleased to be able to make the latest version of this great racing facility – now home to DTM, Formula 3 and many club events – available to iRacing's membership. Last month we initiated the expansion of our track offerings beyond our base in North America with the addition in the UK of Brands Hatch and Oulton Park to Silverstone, which is already available to iRacing members. Circuit Park Zandvoort, the site of so much motorsport history, is a particularly appropriate first European track. Our members from all over the world will enjoy racing there."
The list of winners of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort reads like a Who's Who of the first four decades of Formula One, beginning with Alberto Ascari in the first World Championship event in 1952, and including Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt, Graham Hill, Jack Brabham, Jacky Ickx, Niki Lauda, James Hunt, Mario Andretti, Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet. But Zandvoort's greatest master was Jim Clark, winner four times in the five races held from 1963 through 1967.
"In addition to our many fans, who will now be able through iRacing to have the fun of racing on the circuit themselves in the virtual world, we have real-world racers come from all over Europe and the UK to compete at Circuit Park Zandvoort" said Bart de Snaijer, Circuit Park Zandvoort's marketing manager. "With our partnership with iRacing and their creation of a millimeter-accurate virtual version of the facility, now drivers who are making their first visit will be able to learn our very challenging track before they arrive for the race meet. And everyone will have the chance to get up to speed before the weekend begins."
de Snaijer noted that while Tarzan, the 180-degree hairpin at the end of the start/finish straight, is the best-known of the dozen named corners on the 2.672-mile track, Scheivlak is the most challenging, and the turn that newcomers will profit most from by pre-race practice in the iRacing service.
"Scheivlak – there is no English word for it – is famous for its high speeds, changes in elevation and the fact that it's a blind corner", de Snaijer said. "Drivers either fear or love it. In a fast car a driver approaches the turn at a speed of 260 km/h (160 mph) and can't even see the start of the turn until they are right on top of it because the track elevation changes. They enter the turn with a speed of 220 km/h (135 mph). The track drops about 10 meters (33 feet) in height and for three quarters of the way through the corner, they can't see the exit. A driver can only understand the true rush of this turn when he or she has experienced it, whether in the physical world or in the virtual one."
Circuit Park Zandvoort is the fifth major configuration of the track since it opened in 1948. While no more than a quarter of the original layout is part of today's modern track, what all iterations have had in common is a combination of dauntingly fast sweeping corners and tight slow corners that demand technical perfection. Circuit Park Zandvoort is expected to join the iRacing track inventory early next year.
iRacing.com was founded in September of 2004 by Dave Kaemmer and John Henry. Kaemmer was co-founder of Papyrus Design Group, developers of award-winning racing simulations including NASCAR Racing: 2003 Season and Grand Prix Legends. Henry is principal owner of the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Sports Group – the co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing – as well as an avid simracer. The iRacing team combines more than 100 years of real-world racing experience with more than 50 years of successful racing simulation development. The company has developed numerous corporate relationships in the motorsport industry, including agreements to develop track simulations with International Speedway Corporation, Speedway Motorsports, and Panoz Motor Sports Group and vehicles with General Motors, Riley Technologies, Radical Sportscars, and 600 Racing. iRacing is the official simulation partner of the Sports Car Club of America, Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, Star Mazda Championship, Skip Barber Racing School and Australia's V8 Super School. Most recently iRacing and NASCAR have announced a partnership to develop NASCAR-sanctioned online racing series. The iRacing service is open to racers and fans of all skill levels from top-level pros to complete beginners. To join in the fun, go to www.iRacing.com.

Adventurers journey to a long-lost island in search of riches and new challenges! Atlus Online's fantasy-steampunk massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent, has unveiled the elusive Rope Isle, an island wracked by war. Thanks to the clamor of Atlus Online's members and a successful petition, the new map destination was opened, furthering the turbulent lore of the shattered continent.
"Our community spoke, and we always strive to listen," says Alice Ly, Online Marketing and Portal Manager, Atlus U.S.A., Inc. "Rope Isle is an integral part of the game's history. It was the epicenter of change and later became a key point of contention in the war to harness Neo Steam. We agree with our fans that this map marks a powerful addition to Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent."
Rope Isle, once known as Acydia, was the source of the catastrophic earthquake that split the continent of Chrysalis. As the landmasses began to drift apart, desperate inhabitants instinctively fashioned cables to keep their world together. Alas, the attempt was futile and left Acydia a tangle of ropes and chains – resulting in its fitting nickname. Rope Isle remains a central part of the struggle in the new world, as it houses vast amounts of the ore used to harvest Neo Steam, a precious resource necessary to fuel most progress, travel, and industry across the nations.
The battle over Neo Steam takes place between two warring states – the Kingdom of Elerd and the Republic of Rogwel. From the onset, customization is key to each player's experience, as they pledge allegiance to their homeland of choice and select from a number of specialized classes. As players battle to expand their nation's resources and protect their borders from invasion, they must learn to harness steam technology to upgrade their equipment, learn new abilities, and progress in their chosen class. Adding to the immersive aspect of the fantasy-steampunk world in Atlus Online's first MMO, the game also features various forms of steam-based machines and vehicles for faster in-game traveling.
Gamers, Atlus Online fans, and those eager to learn more about the addition of Rope Isle can visit http://www.neosteam.atlusonline.com for more information.

Phantom EFX, the world's leading developer and publisher of PC-based casual game titles, and independent game development studio 8monkey Labs announced today that their highly anticipated historically-based first person shooter, Darkest of Days, is set to launch on September 8, 2009 for both Windows-based PC and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.
"Working on Darkest of Days has been, without a doubt, the crowning achievement in both my personal career and that of Phantom EFX," said Aaron Schurman, CEO of Phantom EFX. "The past few years, everyone here and at 8monkey Labs has been working incredibly hard to create this title, one that we feel will give gamers plenty of memorable entertainment and serve as a gigantic breath of fresh air into the FPS genre."
Have you ever wondered what could happen if time travel was a reality? Have you ever thought about the possibility of going back in time to rewrite history for the better? That possibility is a reality in Darkest of Days, where players will travel back and forth through the annals time to relive some mankind's most dire hours. By fighting through terrible events such as The Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest conflict of the Civil War, and both World War I and II, the player will attempt to save certain key individuals who were never meant to become involved in these truly monstrous events and thereby change human history for the better.
In Darkest of Days, you take on the role of Alexander Morris, an unlucky foot soldier who gets transferred to General Custer's regiment days before the Battle of Little Bighorn. Moments before his inevitable demise, a futuristic time agent warps in to save Morris and transports him to the future where he is told that time travel is now a reality. However, an unknown faction is attempting to re-write history for their own benefit. Your job is to stop them, and you'll fight your way through eras spanning thousands of years to do it.
Key features of Darkest of Days include:
Brand New Engine: The dedicated team at 8monkey Labs has created an all-new, groundbreaking game engine known as Marmoset. The Marmoset Engine not only breaks from the all-too present Unreal engine FPS clones flooding the market, but also allows for some amazing graphical capabilities. You'll fight through epic battles filled with literally hundreds of NPCs on the screen at the same time, all with an advanced AI and all without a hint of graphical slowdown and all set against wide-open environments that are lushly detailed and dynamically lighted.
Compelling Storyline: Darkest of Days is a compelling, action-packed first-person shooter to be sure, but it's not just mindless run-and-gun, blow 'em up gameplay. You'll have to not only think about how to approach certain key battles and situations, but you'll also have to take care when fighting – certain key people that were never meant to die will be marked with a special blue aura. If you kill them, you'll face dire consequences…
Wreak Havoc with Future Weapons in Antiquity: Something nearly every gamer that's ever played a shooter based in the past has always wanted is the ability to bring a futuristic weapon back through history and kick some major butt. How differently would Custer's last stand have turned out if the General was equipped with an M-16 assault rifle? You'll be able to answer questions like this in Darkest of Days. While not every battle and situation will allow you to wield weapons from the future, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to unleash futuristic fury on your unsuspecting foes.

Hordes of Serious Sam fans and would-be video game writers around the world can now have a hand in Serious Sam HD on Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PC. Brought to the masses by Croteam, Devolver Digital, cdv Software Entertainment AG, and Majesco Entertainment, an innovative provider of video games for the mass market, the Serious Tweet Contest gives gamers a chance to write their very own clever one-liner or hilarious wisecrack that Sam 'Serious' Stone will drop right in the middle of all the frantic, non-stop shooting action in Serious Sam HD. The lucky winner will have his or her line recorded by John J. Dick, the voice of Serious Sam, and integrated into the upcoming summer release for the entire world to hear.
"We have always admired the love and support fans have shown Croteam and the Serious Sam franchise," said a shy, unassuming spokesperson for Devolver Digital. "This is a fantastic way to get gamers involved in Serious Sam HD and give our fans a chance to contribute to the game itself."
So how does a budding video game writer enter a finely crafted line for a chance to hear it in Serious Sam HD? Gamers can log on to Twitter and send a brilliant tweet quip to @devolverdigital between July 15 and July 30. Croteam will choose the winning line and Devolver Digital will announce it to all followers of
www.twitter.com/devolverdigital and www.twitter.com/majesco in early August.
"I never get any thanks for the wonderfully poetic and emotionally layered lines I write for Sam 'Serious' Stone," said an overworked and underpaid writer at Croteam "So guess what? Let someone else take a crack at it and see how hard it is. These witty remarks don't write themselves you know."
In addition to having the winning line appear in Serious Sam HD, the winner's name will be immortalized in the credits of the game and forever become a part of Serious Sam lore.
Developed by Croteam, the creators of the Serious Sam franchise, and produced in partnership with Devolver Digital, Serious Sam: The First Encounter is re-tooled and re-vamped in glorious High Definition with the all-new Serious Engine 3. It is scheduled for release on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PC in late summer.
