Alawar Entertainment, a leading publisher of casual games, today released the PC version of Farm Frenzy 3. Featuring expanded gameplay and a delightful new central character, the arcade business sim is set to exceed the expectations of Farm Frenzy fans worldwide.
Released in November 2007, Farm Frenzy topped the charts of Real Networks, MSN Games, BigFish Games, Pogo, iWin and other portals. The first sequel, Farm Frenzy 2, was even more popular. To date, Alawar has translated the Farm Frenzy series into more than a dozen languages and ported it to multiple platforms, including iPhone.
In Farm Frenzy 3, Scarlett travels to Africa, South America and other exotic locations to manage five different farms and try her hand at penguin breeding and jewelry making. Her goal is to become the president of the farmers union by earning the votes of the people she helps.
This task will be easier than before thanks to improved gameplay. Players can breed birds instead of buying them, for example, and dress the bears they catch in silly outfits and sell them for more money.
Players will be also challenged to beat 90 levels, tend to 15 animals (including walruses and llamas) and purchase more upgrades than in previous Farm Frenzy games. What's more, as players grow crops, feed animals, collect produce and manufacture goods, they'll be treated to some of the zaniest animation to ever grace a casual game!
Download the free trial version at www.alawar.com/game/farm-frenzy-3.

Award-winning video game developer Mind Control Software announced today that it has joined forces with Richard Garfield and Skaff Elias - creators of Magic: The Gathering and its Pro Tour - to develop a revolutionary online strategy game, code-named Mind Twist.
Since Garfield invented his genre-creating product, Magic: The Gathering, the market for tabletop strategy games has consistently passed the billion dollar mark each year. In his work with Mind Control Software, Garfield plans to bring the elements of tabletop gaming to the digital realm, using the same gaming expertise and creative genius that devised one of the biggest tabletop franchises in history.
"We couldn't be more excited about our partnership with Richard and Skaff, and the genuine rock star talent they bring to our team," said Andrew Leker, CEO, Founder, and Chief Designer of Mind Control Software. "These guys have been delivering compelling social entertainment experiences in the tabletop realm for years, and it's only now in this new era of social media that the same experiences are possible online."
"The potential of digital games fascinates me and I left Wizards of the Coast to pursue them," said Richard Garfield. "Mind Control has the expertise to bring my designs to a new generation of gamers, and the platform technology to build the right 'meta-game' around them." Both Garfield and Elias have also joined Mind Control Software's advisory board and will be involved with several other projects at Mind Control, in addition to the development of Mind Twist.
Mind Twist is a free-to-play game with a microtransaction-based business model built on Mind Control Software's state-of-the-art Orbital Game Platform. Orbital is a soup-to-nuts game engine at the heart of dozens of shipped games, and now, in addition, it supports play across different gaming devices. Mind Twist will launch on Facebook and iPhone, with other platforms added over time. Players can currently follow the game on Twitter (@TheMindTwist) and Facebook.
"We are proud that our technology will be bringing Richard's vision to life," Leker continued. "We are confident that the man who rebuilt tabletop games into a billion dollar industry will be instrumental in leading a new age of online gaming."

Though piracy -- the hearty, swashbuckling kind -- is currently running rampant on Steam, Valve boss Gabe Newell is unconcerned by the contemptible scourge of the C:\. "We don't really worry about piracy," he told Good Game in a lengthy E3 interview.
Newell pointed to "misconceptions in the industry about what piracy is," drawing attention to the curious paradox that lies in people spending $2000 on a computer, only to resort to theft when they want to play a game on it. The real cause of the problem, according to Newell? "Bad service on the part of game companies."
Newell used Russia as an example -- a place that everybody knows is a haven for piracy, right? Why even bother with localizations for that market? Here's why: pirates were doing a better job of localizing content for players, and once Valve offered a timely and accommodating service, its piracy issues in Russia "disappeared." Though the company's service-trumps-scallywags approach is unlikely to defeat hardened code kleptomaniacs, it's certainly preferable to the digital ball and chain of overly restrictive DRM.

So last we heard Windows 7 would be officially hitting RTM status some time this month, but as to when we'd be able to get our hands on it, turns out that's a very tricky question. According to the official Windows blog, OEMs will be able to get it approximately two days after the OS goes RTM, and beta testers who are already subscribed to TechNet can download RTM shortly after it happens for free. Independent software and hardware vendors can download via Microsoft Connect / MSDN on August 6th. Same goes for MSDN-subscribed developers and IT Professionals with a TechNet account, but only the English language version. Microsoft Partner Program Gold / Certified members can join the fun August 16th via Microsoft Partner Network portal on the 16th, and Action Pack Subscribers on August 23rd -- both also English only. All other language versions for those groups are due out by October 1st.
Finally, if you don't happen to fall in any of those categories, Microsoft is happy to remind you that Release Candidate doesn't start giving the annoying reboots until March 1st, 2010, with full expiration happening June 1st -- plenty of time to avoid picking up a copy if you didn't get a chance to pre-order at the much more reasonable discount price.

German publisher Frogster has suspended a number of Runes of Magic players for seven days pending investigations into "exploiting".
Frogster, however, will not say what the investigations are for specifically, nor how many people have been locked out of the free-to-play, micro-transaction-powered MMO. Those caught in the net have been similarly left in the dark.
"We had to suspend accounts for an investigation because we had a case of exploiting," a spokesperson for Frogster told Eurogamer. "Since the investigation is an ongoing process I cannot give out too many information at the moment. We will release a more detailed statement during the next days.
"At the moment we are checking thoroughly how far every user is involved in this case of exploiting," the spokesperson added, assuring us users haven't been banned "randomly".
Interestingly, while suspended users cannot enter the world of Runes of Magic, they can continue to spend real money on diamonds - an in-game Item Shop currency.
The result of these bans is unrest among the Runes of Magic populace, illustrated by a 72-page to-and-fro between customer and company on the official forums.
The disquiet revolves around lack of communication, which the vocal members of the community feel is harming the reputation of Frogster and game.

The relaunch of World of Warcraft in China, where it has already been offline for six weeks, still faces an indefinite delay as it awaits government approval for its content. Problems for Blizzard Entertainment, the game's creator, started when it switched to a new local operator for World of Warcraft in China, online gaming company NetEase. New operators of foreign games have to submit the games for government approval, and China has objected to some of the content it found in its latest review of the game

We've seen cables, controllers, drivers and years of promises, and it looks like we now finally have some pictures of the first official USB 3.0 motherboard out in the wild. That milestone comes courtesy of ASUS, which looks to have gone all out (or as far out as motherboards can go) with its new P6X58 Premium model. As you can see above, it packs a pair of easily identifiable USB 3.0 ports and three standard USB 2.0 ports, along with accommodations for a Core i7 processor, six DDR3 memory slots, three PCI-Express 2.0 slots, and plenty of other standard fare. Still no word on a price or release date, unfortunately, and the folks at Xfastest unsurprisingly weren't able to provide any benchmarks or the like, considering that there isn't much in the way of actual USB 3.0 gear to test it with just yet.

World of Warcraft could be back online in China shortly following extended downtime when its operator switched from The9 to NetEase.
The General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has almost completed its content checks, according to JLM, and the game should be ready to go live again soon. However, GAPP technological and digital publishing department director Zhang Yijun has reported some violent content found by the authorising body will need to be revised before this happens.
After NetEase won the rights to operate the MMO game in April, servers were scheduled to be switched over in June. However, due to factors said to be out of its contol, NetEase failed to relaunch the game and it has been offline in the region since June 7.

Microsoft has reportedly registered a patent for a drop-in/drop-out feature in an online co-op shooter.
The application was made to the United States Patent and Trademark Office during the reign of the original Xbox in December 2002, according to Kotaku.
The patent has now been approved, and refers to: “A squad-based shooter video games that allows players to dynamically join and leave the game, while that game is in progress, without the players having to save and restart the game.”
A similar system debuted in Microsoft’s Fable II in October last year. The references to “a squad-based shooter” have sparked speculation that the feature will appear in the next Gears Of War title.

Many ex-Bullfrog staff remain at EA Bright Light, says studio head
Classic IP from defunct UK studio Bullfrog may be next in line for a next-gen re-release.
That’s according to Harvey Elliott, head of EA’s UK-based Bright Light studio.
Speaking to Videogamer, Elliot said “If I'm making a new [Bullfrog Game] it's got to be special to stand up there. It's definitely something we talk about all the time."
Early in July LucasArts announced it was set to re-release ten of its classic franchises (listed here) on Valve’s Steam platform, as well as release a heavily-updated edition of the original Secret of Monkey Island on PC and XBLA.
It continues a growing trend of classic games being re-released, often through emerging digital platforms, as publishers and developers increasingly look to minimise risks and win easy races.
Classic games such as Space Invaders, TMNT: Turtles In Time, Leisure Suit Larry and Alien Breed have in recent times been sent back to developers for re-releases.
A classic Bullfrog IP has, in fact, seen its own re-release of sorts. A new version of well-regarded Bullfrog title Populous was developed by Genki for the Nintendo DS last year.
Bullfrog, co-founded by Peter Molyneux, rose in prominence throughout the late 80s and early 90s before it was acquired by EA back in 1995.
Many ex-Bullfrog staff are now situated at EA Bright Light, with Elliot adding that he’d always put hope on returning to classic Bullfrog IP.
Populous aside, prominent Bullfrog games include Theme Park and Syndicate. Recent unconfirmed reports have suggested that Swedish studio Starbreeze has tied with EA to deliver a next-gen edition of Syndicate.

Latest figures from GfK show etailers are increasing their grip on the market
The internet is becoming more and more important to the consumer IT market, according to GfK.
The latest figures from the analyst show that etail now accounts for 25 per cent of the IT market's sales in value. It said that IT-focused online retailers had been particularly apt at securing consumers' stretched disposable incomes.
"As consumers are looking to cut costs they are becoming much more savvy at utilising all mediums to find the best deal for the goods that they want," commented GfK analyst Greg Allen.
"The internet now comprises 25 per cent of the value in the total IT market, and represents a key tool for them to save a few pennies in an otherwise challenging time."

A teenager could face federal charges after investigators say he made online threats to kill Americans on a plane from Indianapolis to Chicago. According to investigators, a monitor of the online interactive game World of Warcraft saw the alleged threats in an on-line chat and called Johnson County authorities. She told investigators the chatter didn't seem like a game."

Microsoft used to call the GPL 'anti-American.' Now, as Microsoft releases Hyper-V Linux Integration Components (LinuxIC) under the GPL (version 2), apparently Microsoft calls the GPL 'ally.' Of course, there was little chance the device drivers would be accepted into the Linux kernel base unless open source, but the news suggests a shift for Microsoft. It also reflects Microsoft's continued interest in undermining its virtualization competition through low prices, and may suggests concern that it must open up if it wants to fend off insurgent virtualization strategies from Red Hat (KVM), Novell (XEN), and others in the open-source camp. Microsoft said the move demonstrates its interest in using open source in three key areas: 1) Make its software development processes more efficient, 2) product evangelism, and 3) using open source to reduce marketing and sales costs or to try out new features that highlight parts of the platform customers haven't seen before

Korean internet giant NHN will be launching in Europe and plans to release its portfolio of MMO titles in the region, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal.
The company, one of the most successful online companies in Korea, will follow up moves from other business - such as NCsoft and Nexon - in establishing a foothold in the region for its free-to-play titles.
The move follows previous launches in Japan, China and the US, and will allow the company to bring several of its products to the region as it sees fit in due course.
"Europe has tremendous growth potential that is too often overlooked by international MMO publishers," said Dongmin Lee, head of overseas game business development. "We understand the opportunities the European market presents, and by meeting the unique requirements of European gamers, we believe we can offer them an outstanding service."
Among its product portfolio is the most successful games portal in Korea - Hangame - as well as the leading search portal in the country as well, Naver.
No announcements have yet been made regarding which games are planned for the region, but the company will be attending both Games Convention Online and gamescom, so news may not be far away.

Internet Explorer 8 will no longer replace the default browser when a user selects the 'Use express settings' option during installation. Back in May, Mozilla and Opera accused Microsoft of force-feeding users Internet Explorer 8 through the Automatic Updates process. The object of their ire was the 'Use express settings' option which automatically sets Internet Explorer 8 as the default browser. The option was already ticked when Automatic Updates offered users the choice to upgrade their browser. 'We heard a lot of feedback from a lot of different people and groups and decided to make the user choice of the default browser even more explicit,' notes Microsoft in a blog post

The first screens and details have emerged on Command & Conquer 4 via a French games mag, picked up by a C&C fansite. Nothing is safe these days.
Here's what the fans have ripped from the mag (potential spoiler alert if it turns out to be bang on the money):
Kane contacts GDI after all hope is lost due to the Tiberium contamination, forming the "Tiberium network control", which allows to control Tiberium spread, as well as turn it into an inexpensive power source- but of course, the extremists of both parties don't agree with this shift, sparking a new war
FMVs won't consist of much asinine babbling in front of bluecsreens, there should be much more action ahead
Our character will play an important role in the story, but FMVs remain 1st person
Much more mature and stern tone
Crawler produces all our units, and is upgradeable as our standard units are
Lost crawlers are instantly replaced, and you can choose between offensive, defensive or engineer classes
Tiberium will be collected by refineries you erect yourself at pre-determined spots
All SP and MP matches will net you experience points to unlock new tech
Oil derricks as secondary income (Unconfirmed!)

One of the leading powers in triple-A online games distribution Valve has opened a brand new portal dedicated purely to casual titles – a move that is likely to leave many online sellers more than a little nervous.
Whilst digital distribution is by its very nature a fairly fragmented market, the Steam network is undoubtedly one of the leading figures in the field. It currently enjoys partnerships with the likes of Ubisoft, LucasArts, THQ, Capcom, Activision, NCsoft and Rockstar.
Owner Valve is also the developer behind some of the biggest IP in the industry - think Half-Life, Portal, Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead to name but a few.
The new Family Gaming portal currently includes the likes of Cake Mania, Plants vs Zombies and Luxor as well as collections form companies such as MumboJumbo and PopCap.
Some would argue that the days of paying for downloads are numbered with the modern casual industry very much focusing on browser-based titles, but the entry into the sector of a player as big as Valve is certainly a game changer.
