Last week Gizmodo had a special celebration of 1979, the last year before a digital tsunami hit, that put Bill Gates in a nostalgic mood this week. Bill chimed in with his own memories of that seminal year when everything changed. 'In 1979, Microsoft had 13 employees, most of whom appear in that famous picture that provides indisputable proof that your average computer geek from the late 1970s was not exactly on the cutting edge of fashion,' wrote Gates. 'By the end of the year we'd doubled in size to 28 employees. Even though we were doing pretty well, I was still kind of terrified by the rapid pace of hiring and worried that the bottom could fall out at any time.' What made Gates feel a little more confident was that he began to sense that BASIC was on the verge of becoming the standard language for microcomputers. 'By the middle of 1979, BASIC was running on more than 200,000 Z-80 and 8080 machines and we were just releasing a new version for the 8086 16-bit microprocessor. As the numbers grew, we were starting to think beyond programming languages, too, and about the possibility of creating applications that would have real mass appeal to consumers.' Gates remembers that in 1979 there were only 100 different software products that had more than $100 M in annual sales and all of them were for mainframes. 'In April, the 8080 version of BASIC became the first software product built to run on microprocessors to win an ICP Million Dollar Award. Today, I would be surprised if the number of million-dollar applications isn't in the millions itself' writes Gates. 'More important, of course, is the fact that more than a billion people around the world use computers and digital technology as an integral part of their day-to-day lives. That's something that really started to take shape in 1979.'

You know, this whole "most powerful laptop" game is pretty hilarious. Back in '05, CompAmerica's (who?) Orca 9098 held the title with a cutting-edge 3.8GHz Pentium 4, and over the years, we've watched outfit after outfit pull the award back and forth, much like those tugging games we used to play as tots. Regardless, it seems as if Maingear's down for the fun, today rolling out the planet's all new "world's most powerful gaming laptop" in the eX-L 18, which arrives with an undisclosed Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processor, twin NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, up to three 2.5-inch SATA or SSD drives, an optional Blu-ray drive and a screen that's probably larger than your mother's desktop LCD. And by that, we mean 18.4-inches with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. If you're down with lugging around this beast, you can get one headed your way provided you've got at least $2,999 you're willing to see off.

Windows 7 comes out Oct. 22, and many gamers are wondering whether it will be a boon for gaming, as Microsoft promised Vista would, or a disappointment (like Vista was at its launch). Former ExtremeTech editor Jason Cross, who's covered games and tech for 13 years, discusses the pluses and minuses of Windows 7 for gamers — how it differs from Vista, if it'll run older games, and the benefits of 64-bit computing. 'Windows 7 basically takes the Vista codebase and rewrites, refines, optimizes, and overhauls most of the internal stuff without making dramatic changes to the driver stacks that Vista did over WinXP. The changes to the fundamental driver models are small and mostly serve to improve performance. Plus, the hardware makers — especially the graphics guys — are on top of the changes this time around. Nvidia and ATI have been shipping quite good Win7 graphics drivers for months now.

Aw snap, one of the final hurdles on the way to October 22nd has been passed: Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008 R2, too) has been released to manufacturing. A post over on The Windows Blog explains that this build (7600) underwent tons of scrutiny and tweaking before being deemed sufficient for release, and considering that we know you're anxious for details on dates, hear this:
"The RTM code will be delivered to our partners within the next few days who will then start preparing to deliver some amazing new products timed to hit at General Availability (GA) of Windows 7 on October 22nd. As always, current Windows Volume License customers, MSDN subscribers and TechNet subscribers will get first customer access, getting Windows 7 on August 6 (MSDN/TechNet) and August 7 (VL), and Windows Server 2008 R2 the second half of August."
So, there you have it -- now, are you prepared to wait until early August to get your download on? Nah, we thought not. The full announcement is posted after the break.

Over at Bazzie Bizzle.com we've posted an interview with Stephen Anthony, the maintainer of the Stella project (an excellent Atari 2600 emulator with near perfect compatibility). This is the third instalment in a series of interviews here on the site. The following is a quote from the interview.
Jay: Can you describe your responsibilities as a member of the Stella Team?
Steve: Currently, maintainer of the entire codebase, which includes responsibility for the Linux, OSX, and Windows ports. I try as much as possible to keep things cross-platform, because that's the only way I can handle the workload (and it's the number one mission statement of the project).

Merscom announced today at the Casual Connect conference in Seattle that it is developing a hidden object adventure game, Bomb Squad: NY, where the player teams with an actual hero of 9/11 and his bomb sniffing canine to protect New York City. The game is scheduled to launch in September.
In Bomb Squad: NY the player teams with Detective Steve Lanoce, an actual NYPD Bomb Squad detective who received the Medal of Valor for his bravery on 9/11. The player also receives clues from another real hero, Steve's bomb sniffing labrador retriever, Duke. He and Duke have been on duty for presidents, heads of state, the UN, Yankee and Shea stadiums, the US Tennis Open and in the transit systems for New York City.
Bomb Squad: NY puts the player in one of the largest cities in the world where the constant threat of attack is held at bay by an elite group of men and women. That group is the NY Bomb Squad. Play as one of their newest members as you hunt down a group of terrorists threatening New York. Partnered with Duke, a trained bomb sniffing Labrador, you must trust your skills and his instincts to find possible bombs and deactivate them before disaster strikes. Work to improve the skills of your K9 companion while hunting down the group behind this rash of bomb threats. Work as a team to solve the case before it's too late.
Help train Duke and improve his bomb sniffing skills
Use your skills and tips from expert Steve Lanoce to hunt down possible suspicious items in life threatening scenarios
Evacuate innocent civilians, disarm bombs, scope out buildings with Steve and Duke in exciting minigames
Explore pre and post blast locations to find clues and determine who is behind this new rash of bombings
"Bomb Squad: NY is an opportunity to take the police procedural so popular on TV to the next level," said Lloyd Melnick, Merscom's Chief Customer Officer. "Only in the gaming sector can the player actually interact with the characters, and more significantly, interact with real heroes like Detective Lanoce. That's something that NCIS or Criminal Minds could never match."

July 22nd, 2009, 21:00 Posted By: wraggster
Nexon America has announced the release of a new content update for Mabinogi, its massively multiplayer online role playing game, adding number of never-before-seen features to the game including flying mounts, a new jungle zone and a set of new skills.
The update, titled "The Ancient Secrets of Irinid," includes a flying mount for the first time in the history of Mabinogi. The first mount, available through July 23, is the beautiful Thunderbird. There will be other flying mounts offered to players in the coming weeks. The Thunderbird and other flying mounts will offer a great new way to travel throughout the game's two continents and assist players during ground battles.
The flying mounts deliver great assistance navigating the game's new zone, Courcle. This new land is filled with wild, untamed areas - including lush jungles, boggy swamps, grassy savannahs, and roaring rivers. Travelers must look out for a variety of deadly enemies, monsters, and animals - including elephants, and hyenas. Two new boss monsters, an enormous giant alligator and regal lion occupy Courcle and require supreme efforts to defeat.
"The Ancient Secrets of Irinid expansion literally offers Mabinogi players a new way to experience the game with the flying mounts," said Min Kim, Nexon America's vice president of marketing. "Flying mounts and the new land mass add many more opportunities for adventure and fun in Mabinogi. Players have new offensive and defensive skills which they'll need in order to defeat the boss monsters and beasts in the new zone. In addition, the new metallurgy and refining skills illustrate the depth of gameplay provided by Mabinogi."
The Ancient Secrets of Irinid offers additional features for new and old players. Players will discover the value in honing a new metallurgy skill in Courcle. A new river rafting feature puts up to eight people on a raft, for what could be a peaceful journey or may require fighting enemies off while traveling through Courcle. Mabinogi has also added two skills to help adventurers under attack with the "charge" skill, which allows players to rush an opponent, and the "magic shield" skill, which allows players to protect themselves and their party from assaults with attack-specific protective bubbles.
The new content is currently available for free. For more information on "The Ancient Secrets of Irinid," or to download the new content and the Mabinogi game for free, go to http://mabinogi.nexon.net.

We've all been curious about how long the Cops & Robbers gameplay presented in Realtime Worlds' APB would be capable of capturing our fleeting, razor-thin attention span. Realtime creative director Dave Jones just ... hey, have you guys seen Brüno yet? It looks pretty funny, but we -- oh, sorry. Dave Jones recently spoke with VideoGamer.com and explained that a five to ten year lifespan is "ultimately the goal" for APB.
Jones said the action-heavy MMO would endure for the same reasons Valve's long-lasting FPS Counter-Strike has. He claims it'll include elements that made the shooter so successful, such as frantic, addictive game play, as well as "leagues and stats and achievements." See, here we thought people loved Counter-Strike because it let you spray paint private parts onto battlefield walls. Our mistake

Blizzard Entertainment's Frank Pearce and J Allen Brack are to address the Game Developers Conference Austin with a keynote entitled 'The Universe of Warcraft'.
During the joint presentation, the pair will discuss how they created the online universe and the ongoing challenges involved with operating one of the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing games.
Pearce has worked on classic Blizzard titles such as Diablo and Starcraft in addition to co-founding Blizzard Entertainment with Allen Adham and Mike Morhaime in 1991. His current job role as executive vice president of product development involves the coordination of a number of teams, including those working on forthcoming release StarCraft II.
His colleague Brack presently works as production director on World of Warcraft and is responsible for overseeing the creation of new content for the series.
The keynote will be of particular interest to any game developer interested in creating MMOs, casual games and virtual worlds, according to a spokesperson represented Think Services Game Group, the organisation presenting GDC Austin.
"World of Warcraft continues to attract more and more subscribers year after year and has changed perceptions of what online gaming can achieve," said Izora De Lillard, Think Services' event director.
"An exploration of Blizzard Entertainment's enduring success in the online gaming space offers important lessons for all connected game developers interested in developing the next great MMO, casual game, or virtual world."
A number of speakers have now been announced for GDC Austin, including the DC Universe Online team and members of BioWare Austin. The three-day conference takes place from September 15.

"This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved with Jumpgate Evolution," said David Solari, VP of Codemasters Online. "We have received overwhelming support for the game since the commencement of its beta sign up last year and our fans have been clamouring for the beta. We expect our fans to agree that it was well worth the wait."
And Scott Brown, president of the game's developer, NetDevil added: "Our players' enthusiasm continues to exceed our expectations at every milestone and we are extremely excited to achieve such fantastic support. We have thoroughly enjoyed obtaining some valuable feedback from the people in our Friends and Family test, helping us to take the next major step towards launch."

Activision Blizzard has announced that the long-planned live-action movie adaptation of MMO World of Warcraft is moving ahead with the revelation that Sam Raimi - much-decorated director of the Spider-Man trilogy - has signed up to steer the project.
He'll be working with Charles Roven, whose Atlas Entertainment company has produced numerous hit films - including The Dark Knight - and the movie will be released by Legendary Pictures.
"Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life," said Paul Sams, COO of Blizzard Entertainment. "From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We're looking forward to working with him to achieve that here."
And Roven added: "Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft has become a second home for millions of players and Sam's experience and talent make him the perfect director for this remarkable and action-packed world."
Other names on the production slate include Roven's producing partner, Alex Gartner as well as Legendary CEO Thomas Tull, the company's COO Jon Jashni, Raimi himself and Raimi's producing partner Joshua Donen.
Raimi's partner, Robert Tapert, is executive producer while Blizzard's senior VP of creative development, Chris Metzen, is co-producer.
The film will be made under Legendary's co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros, and the latter's Jeff Robinov was pleased to see the production going ahead: "Warcraft is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known. We have enjoyed great success with our partners at Legendary, and this is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Sam on a project that is so eagerly anticipated by so many."
Activision Blizzard has promised to release more details about the cast and release date at a later date.

Sky News has uncovered what it calls a 'data access scam' perpetrated by computer repair shops in the London area, secretly filming a number of attempted abuses including theft of banking information.
After sending laptops with only most minor of technical faults into various stores for repair, The News International owned media firm was able to observe the activities of the engineers thanks to a concealed camera and specialised software, including keystroke logger programmes.
The sting caught one particular engineer extracting personal photos, Facebook log in details, and bank account information onto a memory stick.
"Some computer repair shops, it seems, just cannot be trusted," stated Sky News reporter Mark White.
Iain Shaw, founder of buying group Brigantia Computer Experts, told PCR: "I am not surprised by what Sky News have found and I think this drives home the message for why genuine repairers should join a membership organisation and display their accreditation certificate and membership sticker prominently so the public know they are dealing with a bona fide computer repair professional. If a Brigantia Computer Expert member behaved in the manner of the repair shop shown in the Sky News report they would be expelled for a clear breach of our code of ethics and professional conduct."
