An architect of the Moblin Project has announced that Moblin 2.0 for netbooks and nettops is the first Linux distribution to run the X server as the logged-in user, rather than SUID'd to root. The fix to this decades-old security liability comes thanks to 'NRX' (No-root X) technology reportedly developed by Intel, Red Hat, and others in the X community, and the Moblin-sponsored 'Secure X' project. Besides making Linux netbooks a lot more snoop-proof, it seems like this could lead to an X-hosting renaissance of sorts, since you wouldn't be risking the whole system just to open up a specific user's account to remote X servers

The MechWarrior floodgates seem to have completely flung open after years of silence. After our exclusive reveal of the latest chapter of the MechWarrior universe, Smith & Tinker added its own special way of commemorating BattleTech's 25th anniversary. In a small news post on its website, Smith & Tinker stated that it had "authorized MekTek.net and MekTek Studios to distribute MechWarrior 4 (along with its expansion packs) completely free." The announcement did not state a particular date that the game and its packs would be released, however.
MekTek had two posts of its own on its site, claiming, "MekTek views this partnership as a hallmark moment for the global MechWarrior 4 community. We welcome the opportunity for the MekTek team to officially take a leadership role in the cultivation and development of the on-line MechWarrior 4 communities in support and anticipation of the recently announced MechWarrior game by Smith & Tinker and Piranha games."
Mechwarrior 4 was released in 2000, and its last expansion pack was released in 2002. The announcement is gigantic news for players that are seeking to re-discover the game which they might not have played in years, or for fans that haven't ever played a MechWarrior game before. MekTek is well known in the MechWarrior fan community for having released its own expansion packs. Three packs in all have been released, and the community is currently working on its fourth. The announcement did not explicitly state whether the expansions would solely be MekTek's, or would also include Mercenaries, Black Knight, Clan Mech Pak or Inner Sphere Mech Pak, all of which were developed by Cyberlore Studios. We've contacted Smith & Tinker, but received no comment as of the publishing of this news. As soon as any additional details are released, we'll make them available.

MechWarrior fans have been hoping, praying and anticipating a new game in the famed franchise ever since the last expansion pack for MechWarrior 4 was released in 2002. Now, seven years later, their prayers have been answered. IGN has the very first details about MechWarrior reboot that is currently in production at Smith and Tinker and Piranha games. Yes, that's right, reboot. Instead of this game becoming MechWarrior 5, the developers have decided to completely re-launch the entire franchise, calling this new title MechWarrior.
We spoke to the two main players involved with MechWarrior. First there's Jordan Weisman, co-founder of Smith and Tinker and co-founder of FASA, the company that created the BattleTech universe that MechWarrior is based upon. Second is Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games.

EA has announced Command & Conquer 4 for release on PC next year. Surprise! Or perhaps not.
To clarify, however, there are no console versions planned - if what EA told vg247 holds true.
The biggest features are an RPG persistent progression system across all gameplay modes, which may or may not include online - EA doesn't specify. Even without, multiplayer still has new 5v5, objective-based challenges, which the re-deployable construction units should spice up.
Nod and GDI factions are back, and will wrap around a story that follows Kane's masterplan reveal as he travels to his enemy's headquarters. Which up-and-coming starlets will pepper the cast-list this time, however, is unknown.
A video and asset splurge is planned for 24th July on EA's BattleCast PrimeTime webcast. But, well, that might always leak ahead of time too.

EA has announced online play for FIFA Manager 10, in which players will be able to pit their transfer and tactical wit against each other just like in real life. But without the posturing.
It's taken 10 instalments to get here, and EA has plenty more features pegged for the autumn PC release.
Better AI and player development, for example, plus brushed-up presentation, superior 3D mode animation and a customisable manager desktop. You can tinker with the facilities in stadiums, too. In addition, there's an improved website and manager diary to collect pictures of silverware, or perhaps your favourite moments in.
FIFA Manager 10 comprises data from over 40 countries, covering over 3600 clubs and 31,000 players. There's an editor to create your own stars as well.

Here's an interesting one. While one would assume that Intel would be quaking in its boots with the emergence of Chrome OS, Michael Chen -- director of Intel's embedded sales group and ultra mobility group in Asia-Pacific -- recently proclaimed that the company isn't worried at all. In fact, Intel seems pretty stoked that Google has introduced an operating system that will undoubtedly rival its own Moblin. To quote: "Our long-term goal is providing hardware for devices with different operating systems... more competition will drive up more innovations and that's good for consumers." Furthermore, we're told that Intel is looking forward to providing chips for machines based on Chrome OS, and frankly, we reckon that Intel's foothold in hardware and software makes it easier to brush this whole thing off. Must be nice, right?

Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments -- according to the latest Chrome OS update from Google, you're looking at the company's initial ragtag team of co-conspirators for its entry into the operating system business. With Adobe's involvement, we can assume Flash support is a given, and the others unsurprisingly run the gamut of netbook and smartbook players. We can't help but notice a couple of conspicuous absences on that list, including Intel and Dell. With Intel, you don't need to partner to work on its chips, but we gotta imagine it'd help by offering more support, and as for Dell, we don't know about that one, but there's still plenty of time for the Big G to enlist more companies in the lead up to its second half 2010 debut.

It's not much, in fact, these screenshots are incredibly easy to fake. Still, a hastily constructed WordPress blog has been setup to host what are claimed to be the world's first screenshots of Google's new Chrome OS -- hailed as both a Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X killer or a Google FUD generator depending upon who you're listening to. As the story is told, a Google representative demonstrated a private beta build of the OS to an anonymous Acer parts supplier yesterday, presumably somewhere in Taiwan. The picture above was grabbed breathlessly while the Google rep was distracted. Highlights of the demonstration break down as follows:
The "elegant" install on the Acer Extensa 4620Z laptop took about 10 minutes and 1 restart
Reboots desktop-to-desktop in about 25 seconds
It was "amazingly fast" in its stripped-down beta form
The blue orb on the auto-hiding "Chrome Bar" along the bottom of the UI is essentially the start menu
Navigating the file system can be done in "exploration" (like Windows explorer) or "browser" (search based) modes
The Chrome Bar can also host a search bar if configured
Future Chrome OS netbooks will feature an iconified Chrome key on the keyboard similar to the Windows flag key
Of course, it's a long, long time before this OS appears on next generation ARM and x86 smartnetbooks -- second half of 2010 according to the Goog -- so who knows what the interface will look like by then. One more image after the break.

That Google Chrome OS counter Microsoft was supposedly working on could be this Gazelle browser, which wants to treat the browser more like an OS.
The Gazelle prototype is supposed to do stuff like protect webapps from each other, and isolate different browser tabs (like Google Chrome does now and Firefox is going to do). It's one of the many, many research projects Microsoft has incubating, but might be the one that they trot out next week to show that they're still in the loop in terms of keeping up with Google.
What it won't do is replace IE—at least not in the short term.

Google's incursions into software -- particularly in strategic markets for Microsoft, are like an Earth-bound asteroid. Observers see it coming for a long time, and fear its impact will be devastating when it finally arrives. So far, though, Google's major software forays have been anything but cataclysmic, and Microsoft hasn't even had to send Bruce Willis into space to stop them.
On one hand -- as I discussed in a recent Switched On column that argued why Android was not the right choice for netbooks -- the mobile operating system continues to have a lot of potential to reshape the smartphone OS competitive landscape. On the other hand, while Chrome is a fine browser, Microsoft, Apple and Mozilla all have their counterparts, and certainly Firefox and Safari at least give Google's browser a run for its money in terms of speed, privacy and user interface. Chrome's impact has been blunted because the PC is already an open platform.
Enter Chrome OS, which will be available on ARM and Intel processors. For the high-volume Intel PC market, Chrome OS will have to take on Windows, but Chrome OS is very different than other Windows competitors such as the Mac OS, Ubuntu or the OS/2 of yore, in that Google does not seem focused on creating platform-exclusive applications. In some ways, Chrome is more of a competitor to Silverlight than to Windows, as Silverlight is Microsoft's cross-platform application foundation. Of course, Windows is Microsoft's home field, and Chrome OS will be Google's.

S2 Games, longtime fans of the "Defense of the Ancients" (DotA) mod for Warcraft 3, have decided to create an entire game based around it (with IceFrog's blessing of course). Without offending their still-active NDA, I can say that Heroes of Newerth is shaping up to be a very polished RTS, with the ability to play both via S2's own online service and local games, something that even Blizzard seems to be missing these days. Unlike most publishers, S2 has also decided to simultaneously release Windows, Mac, and Linux clients, making this one of the best looking games that I have ever seen on my Linux box. Additionally, S2 would like to invite another 400 players to the HoN beta, so if you are an RTS fan (and especially if you are a DotA fan) just send an email to scuttlemonkey at slashdot dot org with the subject line of "HoN Beta Key Request" and I'll reply to the first 400 requests as best I can. Update 20:37 GMT by SM: In case you don't notice in your haste to create a beta account, let me remind you that this game is still under strict NDA, so please no specifics in the discussion below.

A new world is emerging in La Tale, the 2D side-scrolling MMO from OGPlanet, as the Mecha Empire expansion launches tomorrow.
Mecha Empire is an industrial, steampunk-inspired world that presents players of all levels with new challenges and rewards. From Scrap Valley, where lower-level players will explore a stark environment cluttered with the City of Iron's cast-off remnants, to The Factory, a dangerous dungeon where sentient robots lie in wait for players over level 150, Mecha Empire has something for everyone. Each of the Mecha Empire's six distinct areas - The City of Iron, The Big Apple, Scrap Valley Entrance, Scrap Valley Exit, The Factory and The City of Iron Class Change Center - offer a distinctively dark yet gorgeous change from the game's typically colorful, pastel art style.
This new update also introduces two new high-tech job classes: Engineers and Meisters. Engineers are proud, hard-working people who use their knowledge of ancient mechanical civilizations to advance the La Tale universe. Instead of more traditional swords or staves, they wield toolboxes filled with all the equipment they need to fix any problem. At higher levels, Engineers can gain access to the Meister class and the ability to fight from airborne robots known as Magnergs.
"With the launch of Mecha Empire, we're introducing an entirely new atmosphere in La Tale," said Ross Park, producer of La Tale. "The new zones are darker and grittier, standing in sharp contrast to the cheerful, lighthearted feel of most of the game's other areas. Mecha Empire adds new depth to the La Tale universe."
More information about this and other La Tale updates and events can be found on the La Tale website at http://latale.ogplanet.com.
