In the latest in a series of pre-mature proclamations, EA's UK PR team let slip that Command & Conquer 4 is currently under development. The news and links to an as-yet unavailable press release was discovered on the team's protected Twitter page earlier today. Though many gamers had been expecting such an announcement, based not only on the strength of the franchise but also some recent surveys by EA, this mention on Twitter seems to be a bit ahead of schedule. Or maybe that's just what they want us to think.

Vaguely announced via a Twitter post, the second bit of downloadable content for BioWare's Mass Effect role-playing game is still something of a mystery. While the initial announcement promised more details soon, a follow-up post made it seem as though the timing just wasn't right. We recently had the opportunity to ask BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka what was going on.
"We haven't announced it formally yet but I think you can expect something in the next little while," he said. "Probably some kind of announcement about [the ME DLC]. It's pretty cool. I've been playing what we're working on there and fans will find it fun."
Is it a side quest and does it reveal any details that may hook into the sequel? That's something we'll have to wait for an official announcement to hear about.
The initial note about this DLC being in the works caught some by surprise considering how close the sequel is and how long it's been since Bring Down the Sky, the only bit of downloadable content for the game so far, was made available. After the sequel is released, will BioWare produce any more content for the original adventure or concentrate on its sequel? "It'll be focused on Mass Effect 2 stuff," said Muzyka.

Arrrrr! Polish up your swashbuckles and grab your sword, because legendary pirate Guybrush Threepwood sets sail today on the first all-new Monkey Island adventure in over a decade. Telltale's highly anticipated game series, Tales of Monkey Island, begins now at www.telltalegames.com for PC with "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal," the first chapter in an epic five-month adventure created by the same team responsible for acclaimed episodic series including Sam & Max, Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People. The first Tales of Monkey Island chapter is expected to release for WiiWare in the coming weeks as well.
The saga begins with a heated battle involving the brave but often bumbling Mighty Pirate Guybrush, his beloved wife Elaine, and their nemesis, the demon pirate LeChuck. When the showdown goes up in flames, Guybrush finds himself marooned on a strange island with winds that always blow inward. How will our hero manage to escape this meteorological anomaly? What has become of LeChuck and Elaine? And what's the story with the infectious voodoo pox that's spreading across the Caribbean, causing Guybrush and other pirates to act like unruly hooligans? These are just some of the many questions posed in this first chapter of what will become one of the most rollicking and rip-roaring entertainment experiences of the summer.
Dave Grossman, Telltale's design director and a designer/writer for the original Monkey Island games says "I was laughing my eyepatch off on a daily basis while we were first cooking up Monkey Island at Skywalker Ranch, but if you'd told me then that it would become a classic, and that twenty years later I'd be working with a killer all-star piratey crew to spin an epic new tale and bring the series to a whole new generation of players, I would have said well, probably,'Look behind you, a three-headed monkey,' but then I've always been a bit weird that way."
Tales of Monkey Island will unfold over the next five months, with each episodic chapter raising the stakes on Guybrush's quest to eradicate the insidious Pox of LeChuck, reunite with his wife, and vanquish his rival. Much like the best television and films series, the story becomes deeper and more engrossing with interweaving threads building to twists and surprises in the grand finale this fall.
Customers who order from Telltale's online store during the first week of availability can choose any other Telltale episode of their choice to include free with their purchase. Visit www.telltalegames.com/monkeyisland to get into the adventure now. Additional Tales of Monkey Island details, gameplay trailers, and a playable demo are also available at the site.

Just as interest in user-generated content in video games is heating up, a team of researchers at the University of Central Florida has released an experimental multiplayer game in which content items compete with each other in an evolutionary arms race to satisfy the players. As a result, particle system-based weapons, which are the evolving class of content, continually invent their own new behaviors based on what users liked in the past. Does the resulting experience in this game, called Galactic Arms Race, suggest that evolutionary algorithms may be the key to automated content generation in future multiplayer gaming and MMOs?

BioWare has told Eurogamer that Mythic Entertainment will "without a doubt" help out on Star Wars: The Old Republic, as there are "absolutely opportunities to share and learn" within the newly formed RPG/MMO group.
As for BioWare helping Warhammer Online, however, co-founder Greg Zeschuk is not so sure.
"I think we always have lots of opinions to share, Ray and I," said Zeschuk in an interview published today. "We've both played Warhammer, and actually I've still been playing it on and off for a while, so I think for us it's not to much a popularity boost as just the fact that we can probably bring perspectives to the table that will be new and perhaps helpful to the guys from Mythic in the same way from an online perspective they can certainly share with us.
"To give credit to the Austin team [making Star Wars: The Old Republic], we have a number of serious MMO veterans on there, so it's certainly not neophytes, but there's absolutely opportunities to share and learn things back and forth."
BioWare's other co-founder, Ray Muzyka, will head the RPG/MMO group, with Zeschuk installed as group creative officer. But despite the reshuffle, Zeschuk reckons "not that much" has changed.
"I think because we had been already working side by side within EA, we had already been sharing stuff back and forth, so there wasn't any, 'Oh no, now we're forced to share things, how terrible.' We'll just continue what we're doing, which is actually sharing technology ideas," he explained.
"I think it will work very much like the Austin studio. Austin is one of the BioWare studios, but they're very independent. They manage the internal processes, they run it like a BioWare studio, but in the Austin vision.
"They've got stuff they're working on, Mythic's got stuff they're working on, and it's going to be a great team there. We've known the people there for quite a while, so in general, they've got their agenda, we've got our goals, they've got their goals, and what Ray and I do at an overall group level is try and make sure that everything is aligned and all the sharing is happening and everyone's supported and getting the resources they need," added Zeschuk.
Star Wars: The Old Republic still has no release date, and Warhammer Online hasn't announced any drastic changes since the merger.
BioWare, of course, has plenty of other projects to worry about: Dragon Age: Origins in particular, which launches on 23rd October for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

In a crowded MMORPG market, we always had trouble remember which one, exactly, Dungeons and Dragons Online was. As of August 6, it'll be a little easier, and the game becomes Dungeons and Dragons Online: Unlimited, or "the one that used to be a paid one, but now is free."
It's an interesting strategy, and we're curious to see how it pans out. We'd issue a stern reminder though, that the true cost of MMORPGs (your immortal soul) is much pricier than a few more bucks on your Visa every month.

After winning the rights to operate World of Warcraft from The9 back in April, China's number two games operator, NetEase, has failed to get its servers up and running resulting in gamers being unable to access the MMO.
The China relaunch was expected to happen at the end of June, reports Reuters, when The9's contract with Blizzard expired and the publisher shut down its own servers. But according to a statement appearing on its website, NetEase has experienced factors out of its control which have delayed the game.
"We have met with some factors which are out of our control, the servers reopening will be delayed," the statement reads. "As of now, we don't have a specific reopening time frame."
In a SEC filing, NetEase said the relaunch is subject to the receipt of necessary governmental approvals. It goes on to state that if the relaunch is significantly delayed, the game's popularity and profitability may be adversely affected.

Ten levels of popular puzzler infused with WoW-goodness available now
PopCap has made a special version of one of its most popular titles available for free, taking influence from Blizzard's phenomenally popular MMO.
The World of Warcraft themed version of Peggle is free to download, and combines the worlds of the two games across 10 new levels that hope make the new version as appealing to fans of the pachinko-inspired title as to devotees of the internationally popular MMO.

It owns the internet, and now Google wants to own your PC too
First of all it took control of the browser market. Then Google attempted to become a software provider with apps like Gmail, Google Docs and Google Maps. Next came its bold new mobile OS but nothing to date compares to Google’s recently unveiled next move – the Windows-rivalling Google Chrome OS.
The open source OS will initially be a comparatively lightweight offering targeted at the growing netbook market. Its principle aim is to allow users to power up and get online in seconds – a far cry from the minutes many Windows owners have to currently endure.
Google also promises an end to the malware and viruses that blight so many PCs. In Google’s words, Chrome OS “should just work”.

As far as USB gadgets go, this is one of the more unique ones, that's for sure. And while we usually don't have much opportunity to play with chainsaws 'round these parts (not in an official capacity, at least), the recently launched usbchainsaw.com has us wondering: perhaps we could stand to be a little more bloodthirsty in our Engadget labs torture testing -- if not for reasons of journalistic excellence, then at least for our own gratification. Of course, the i.Saw product website has all the hallmarks of a hoax -- but at least the video has provided some inspiration for the next time we're ready to wig out during a staff meeting. Check it out yourself after the break.

After years of speculation, Google has announced Google Chrome OS, which should be available mid-2010. Initially targeting netbooks, its main selling points are speed, simplicity and security — which kind of implies that the current No.1 OS doesn't deliver in these areas! The Chrome OS will run on both x86 and ARM architectures, uses a Linux kernel with a new windowing system. According to Google, 'For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.' Google says that this new OS is separate from Android, as the latter was designed for mobile phones and set-top boxes, whereas Chrome OS is designed 'for people who spend most of their time on the web.

Could a new MechWarrior game be in development? Signs seem to point to yes, with a recent teaser trailer being released on the Internets. Voodoo Extreme posted a short nine second trailer that shows off a city street and a number of slick looking sports cars. The street starts to vibrate as a stomping sound can be overheard, and shortly thereafter, what looks like a mech leg crunches into view. The video then ends as debris is propelled from the ground due to the impact.
Could this video show the new MechWarrior game?
If this is indeed a new MechWarrior game, it would be huge for fans of the franchise, who have been waiting for a true sequel to MechWarrior 4: Vengeance. While the last expansion pack for that game was released in 2002, fans were hoping for more from the FASA Interactive/Microsoft partnership, which unfortunately fell apart. With FASA Interactive officially dead, the rights to the MechWarrior franchise were acquired by Smith and Tinker, which was founded by FASA founder Jordan Weisman. This acquisition, along with the teaser trailer, indicates that the series could potentially be gearing up once again. Also, considering that the article mentions Piranha games, it indicates that Smith and Tinker have formed a partnership to work on the game, which should be promising for mech fans. Piranha has some experience with gigantic robots, having just finished work on the recently released Transformer games.

Is it a stealth-em-up, is it a hunting game, is it a first person shooter? Whack your thinking! It's new, genre breaking and incredibly popular.
Innovative online video game 'The Hunter' today announced its status as the worlds leading hunting destination following a massive 1 million visitors since its official launch in April of this year.
Wait, it gets even better… You want immersive game play? 60% of its 'expeditions' last over 30 minutes by player choice, as they enjoy the realistic environments, tracking, sneaking, and the antici…pation of the hunt.
"This is not surprising" says Morgan O'Rahilly, CEO, Emote Games, "The Hunter is miles ahead of its direct competition in terms of quality. And the whole idea behind The Hunter was to break down some established genres – to take something from hardcore gaming, something from free2play or mass market social gaming, add something brand new – and create a hybrid that challenges pre-conceived notions of 'game' and 'genre'. Being this innovative brings its challenges for sure – we're hard to pigeonhole - but what the heck, it keeps the experience fresh and interesting and that's what we're all about."
The Hunter is an organic experience, and has already developed in radical new ways since launch. Coming next is the Compound Bow designed, as you might expect, to be the best iteration of a bow in ANY video game.
"There aren't too many games that allow you to sneak around with a bow, and even if you've played one you won't have experienced anything like this before," says Emote COO Dave Rose. "Snaking through the trees, trying not to breathe too hard, senses wide open for the slightest sight or sound of prey... I hope a million more people come and try it out. Even I'm surprised how good it is."
Communicate with smart NPC experts, share information or brag to others in the fully integrated social space, improve your character's skills in multifaceted ways, track, sneak, shoot… just don't worry too much about the genre.
If you haven't already done so, sign up and play for free www.thehunter.com

Funcom plans to reveal a brand new Age of Conan expansion this August at GamesCom.
Director of communications Erling Elllingsen told Eurogamer he is "really looking forward" to the reveal, and that fans following the event are "in for a treat".
He wouldn't talk about expansion specifics, but explained that a "dedicated team" has been working on it since AoC launch, "And they are very eager to show off what they have been working on!"
Funcom recently announced massive changes to the Age of Conan world, such as an overhaul for the underlying RPG mechanics as well as a new zone with associated heap of content.
"We are bringing a lot of that into the expansion as well," said Ellingsen of the core changes, "making sure we build upon the strengths of the game and stay true to the original vision we have always had for Age of Conan."
"I think players will be pleased!" he added.
GamesCom is the new premier consumer videogame event for Germany that takes place in Cologne from 19th to 23rd August. We'll be there.
The Leipzig Games Convention, as a result, is no more. Instead, Games Convention Online will take place from 31st July to 2nd August and focus on online and mobile games and businesses.

Players of Trion World Network's forthcoming MMO title, Heroes of Telara, will benefit from innovative new gameplay designs, including emergent behaviour and a fully dynamic world where no two experiences will be the same.
That's according to the company's CEO, Lars Buttler, who told GamesIndustry.biz that such ideas are what sets Telara apart from other MMORPG titles in the sector - World of Warcraft included.
"We felt that server-based gaming can bring very substantial innovation to various different game categories. And we felt very strongly that the RPG category could be improved significantly and that you can really innovate in that category," he explained.
"And what you can do with server-based gaming really translates into great gameplay innovation in the RPG genre. Server-based gaming allows you to simulate the entire game, all the different processes of a game, server-side. And because that's the case, you can have live videogames.
"You can have fully dynamic worlds that can be changed by the developer and the user all the time. You can also have massively social worlds, with many, many people coming together and doing things."
He went on to detail exactly how that will manifest itself in Telara - one of several online titles that Trion is currently working on.
"We are talking about a game now where we can literally call upon you to become a hero, because if you think of what makes a person a hero, it's not doing something that is already well known, or do the same thing every day, or do things that don't matter to anybody but yourself," he said. "Heroes are people that do things that are unexpected, that are challenging. They have to make really tough choices, and those choices affect their world.
"Now this is exactly what you will find in Heroes of Telara, where we challenge you to become a hero, to make tough choices, to face unexpected challenges and events every time. And we never have a game that is the same. There are small events, there are big events, there is even emergent behaviour in the game that changes the game world. A lot of it is not even known to us, it's like the ghost in the machine. The game is almost alive, and that allows you to create heroes."

Since MMORPGs became a mainstream medium, players have debated the two primary methods of advancement. Which is better? Is it the level-based system that is so dominant in today's MMORPGs, or the lesser-used skill-based system? This has been a strong subject of debate on many forums, blogs, and gaming sites for as long as the genre has existed. Ten Ton Hammer's Cody 'Micajah' Bye investigates the two concepts and gathers input from some of the brightest minds in the gaming industry about their thoughts on the two systems of advancement."
Relatedly, I've seen a growing trend of players saying that such games don't really take much skill at all. The standard argument is that it just boils down to "knowing how to move" or "knowing when to hit your buttons." In the MMO community, people often make references to FPS or RTS games, saying they have a higher skill cap. However, the same complaints also come from within those communities, with comments like "you just need to know the map," or "it's all about a good build order." At what point does intimate knowledge of a game's mechanics make a player skilled?

MMO MONTH: Fill in a form, decipher the captcha, click the verification email, download the client – getting going in even the simplest MMO can be hard work, and the developer of Football Superstars has said that each of these barrier’s can lose a title 50 per cent of its potential userbase.
Furthermore, those looking to get it right need look no further than Sony’s tremendously successful Free Realms.
“From our experience of measuring player or potential player activity from registration to getting in to the game world any barrier presented to them is likely to lose you 50 per cent or more at each stage – this is potentially true for each registration field you have in the process,” CyberSports’ creative director Steve Marshall told CasualGaming.biz.
“If anyone has managed this process near perfectly I would have to suggest it has been SOE with Free Realms. If it were up to me they would win several awards for their download delivery method alone and I believe Free Realms will be the benchmark for many development studios in the future.”
