Sony Online Entertainment's massively-multiplayer RPG The Matrix Online will be shut down on July 31, the game's online community lead has confirmed.
In a message posted on the game's official web forums community lead and producer Daniel Meyers broke the news to the community.
"Now we’ve seen how far the rabbit hole goes and it's time to wake up from that dream (or go back to sleep, depending how you look at it)," said Meyers. "On July 31, 2009, we will be jacking out for the last time. It's a bittersweet moment for everyone involved with the game; as a player or as a developer."
"It has been a good run," he continued. "Where many games have fizzled out before or shortly after launch, by August we will have lived on in our home at SOE for more than 4 years. To this day, I have never worked with a community as dedicated as The Matrix Online community."
The Matrix Online was initially developed by Monolith for publisher Ubisoft, which dropped the game in early 2004. The game was picked up by Sega later that year, and launched in March of 2005. Within months, the title was taken over by Sony Online Entertainment, which has overseen the title ever since
