Valve has added a new space to the front page of Steam, in the hopes of offering a better at-a-glance view of recently updated games.
The Recently Updated section not only highlights patched games, but those that have just received DLC or new features entirely. Developers can choose when their update is highlighted in this section, thanks to new developer tools available alongside the Recently Updated portal's roll-out. This is an especially useful feature for constantly-changing Early Access games and mitigates the need to hunt down patch notes on developer sites or in the Steam Community forums. There's even a page to specifically list updates for your Steam library.
Last year, Valve announced plans to better integrate Steam into the living room. This initiative includes custom plug-and-play Steam Machines, built by third-party manufacturers, running on a custom version of Linux called SteamOS. Each Steam box also ships with Valve's own Steam Controller.

Steam has a broad selection of deals up for grabs over the next few days, with a free Borderlands 2 weekend accompanying launch sales for a handful of recently released games.
Starting today and ending Sunday at 1PM PT, players can experience the fullBorderlands 2 campaign for free via Steam. If you want to continue scavenging Pandora afterward, all Borderlands 2 content – including its DLC, Season Pass, and Game of the Year Edition – is 50 percent off through Monday.
While you're on the hunt for deals, you might want to pick up South East Games' QWOP-inspired sports sim Probably Archery for 25 percent off during its debut week. Milestone's recently launched racer WRC Powerslide is available at a 15-percent discount, and Red Barrels' horror game Outlast is 50 percent off of its regular price, allowing you to scare the pants off yourself this weekend for just $10.
Other games featured among Steam's week-long deals include Necrophone Games' comedy adventure Jazzpunk ($12), Seaven Studio's puzzle-platformerEthan: Meteor Hunter ($8), and Milkstone's retro-styled racing game Little Racers Street ($6.40). Just in time for Valentine's Day, Fred Wood's Love+, a retro platformer we got a closer look at in 2011, is out as an Early Access game, on sale for $2 until February 14.

How does your favorite game or game series thank you, the player? In-game items? Bonus XP weekends? Raffle contests? How about a monument to your honor and glory in the heart of a country's capital city? CCP, developers of EVE Online, plan to erect a monument more than 16 feet tall in the city of Reykjavik, Iceland to thank players for their time and contributions to the long-running starship MMO. That's like bonus XP for life.
The monument will be erected and placed upon a half-meter tall pedestal which will list the main characters of all active EVE Online players. A press release announcing the planned monument states that the active player list will be captured on March 1, 2014, so if you want to stand up and be accounted for, now's the time to strap back into the captain's chair. CCP will also include the names of EVE players who have passed away.
Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CEO of CCP said in a statement that, "Honoring [the players] as part of a timeless monument shows how virtual lives and adventures have reached a new level of meaning and impact that weaves into and enhances those that happen in this world. We are humbled by all those that have joined us on the journey so far, and it's our hope that this physical piece will continue to gather energy and relevance into decades to come, becoming like EVE Online and outliving us all."

It's that time again, folks! Psychonauts and Broken Age developer Double Fine is embarking on its third Amnesia Fortnight, the process in which the studio takes a two week hiatus from whatever else it's working on to develop prototypes for four bonkers new game ideas. This time out the studio has recruited Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward to lead one of the four projects, though it's still to be decided exactly which game idea he'll oversee. This - along with the other three prototypes - will be chosen by you, dear readers, so long as you pledge towards the Amnesia Fortnight 2014 Humble Bundle.Donating $1 allows you to vote on the three prototypes led by Double Fine staff and play said prototypes when they're complete. Pledging more than the average - currently $5.36 - lets you vote on which project Ward works on, then eventually play that as well. And backers who give more than $35 will receive a two-disc Amnesia Fortnight 2014 set with the upcoming prototypes and a blu-ray of the documentary about the two week game jam made by Double Fine's regular film crew 2 Player Productions. To hear the various pitches, skip to the five minute mark in the trailer below (though the opening is really amusing and worth watching). Some of the ideas include: Timagotchi, "a pet simulator in which you nurture an adorable game developer and help them bring their ideas to life"; Astro Helmet, which is described as "Star Fox meets Shadow of the Colossus in space... with pizza"; and Bad Golf 2, a sequel to a game that never existed, but Double Fine's Patrick Hackett valiantly pitched during last year's Amnesia Fortnight. You've got to admire his moxie.

Back at CES, Toshiba told us that its new Chromebook would be shipping on February 16th. It appears, though, the company has decided to make it available ahead of time, as the 13-inch Chrome OS laptop is now up for grabs in the US and UK. In a small twist, however, Toshiba is listing the Haswell-powered Chromebookfor $300 on its website, a small bump over the $279 price it was announced with earlier this year. That said, retailers like Adorama and Amazon do have it for around $280, so you could still enjoy that lower price after all. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Amazon's selling the Toshiba Chromebook for £249, with shipments expected to begin February 10th.

Humble Bundle offers three tiers of entry into Sid Meier's epic, world-building simulation games: The first package offers Civilization 3 Complete, Civilization 4: The Complete Edition, Ace Patrol, Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies and Railroads for any price you want. The second tier adds Civilization 5 and its Gods and Kings DLC if you pay more than the average, and the third tier packs in Civ 5's Brave New World DLC for $15 or more.
The Humble Sid Meier Bundle is live for two weeks and benefits the charity Action Against Hunger, a humanitarian organization with the goal of ending world hunger. As always, spend more than $1 to get Steam keys with your Humble Sid Meier Bundle order, and split whatever you pay among Humble, the developer and the charity.

Adhesive Games announced that its free-to-play mech combat game, Hawken,is due for an imminent release on Steam, pending a week-long transition period for registered players.
Starting today, Adhesive will phase out its existing Hawken launcher and gameplay services, redirecting current players to a pre-release Steam version instead. From now on, Hawken will require a Steam account to play, and the game will no longer be accessible outside of Steam. All player progress will transfer to the Steam version.
Current Hawken players will receive early access to a Steam version that includes the majority of content from the game's recent February update, though some features may be unavailable initially. "This patch will be missing some core content and you may run into some of our QA testers still working on final polish," Adhesive notes. "Right now, we're aiming for a formal release of the update in the next couple of weeks."
All existing Hawken players should receive a Steam code by February 11. Adhesive will begin accepting new players after a full Steam release rolls out later this month.

Historical strategy game Hegemony Rome: The Rise of Caesar will enter Steam Early Access at a "discounted price" on February 12. The game is being published by Kasedo Games, which is the digital-only division of Kalypso Media. If Early Access is good enough for Ubisoft, don't be surprised to see more publishers with plenty of capital using the pay-for-alpha/beta program to reduce risk on their end in 2014.
"The game is already in an advanced state of completion - which includes about 12 hours of gameplay, most of the main game features and the first two chapters of the campaign," noted Kasedo Games in the announcement. The ready-for-primetime version of the game will be on PC this spring.

Valve's Steam Machine PC gaming boxes are 'a threat' to games consoles like Xbox One and PS4, says the boss of PC game publisher and distributor Contact Sales.
Robert Stallibrass, games industry veteran and MD of the UK firm - which publishes games like Euro Truck Simulator 2 under its own Excalibur label - is excited by the machines.
"They're absolutely a threat to consoles," he told PCR. "Bring them on, I say. Ship them out.
"In fact, we would love to be involved in selling some Steam Machines, but only as a distributor. The other point is we’re getting our games on Steam and we can slip one of our products in there [with the Steam Machines].
"I think the Steam Machines are great for PC gaming. Another great thing is that there are so many more PC games available than there are console games. Instead of having - and no disrespect to Sony or Microsoft - a limited number of products available, PC is a massive opportunity with thousands more games available."
Valve confirmed 14 Steam Machine manufacturing partners at CES 2014 last month.
Valve and Steam boss Gabe Newell described the first-generation of Steam Machines as offering "something for every gamer, which is a critical part of extending Steam into the living room".
The Steam Machine gaming PCs are set to launch later this year, with the only UK-built machine coming from Scan in the second half of 2014.

Windows XP has seen its market share rise, despite support for the operating system ending in April.
Net Applications reported that from December 2013 to January 2014, XP’s global share on desktops rose from 28.98 per cent to 29.23 per cent – an increase of 0.25 per cent.
Windows 7 remains XP’s successor as the most popular OS in the world, with 47.49 per cent of the market during January. This, however, was fractionally less than during December, when the OS, which launched in 2009, held 47.52 per cent.
Windows 8 continued to slowly increase in popularity, rising to 10.58 per cent from 10.49 per cent in the same time period.
Support for Windows XP will end on April 8th 2014. The operating system is the longest-lived version of Windows to date.

Mozilla has released Firefox 27 for Linux, Android, Mac, and Windows (download). One of the big changes is enabling support for TLS 1.1 and 1.2 by default. Firefox 27 also supports the SPDY 3.1 protocol. Developers got some new toys: support was added for ES6 generators in SpiderMonkey, the debugger will de-obfuscate JavaScript, and style sheets can be reset by using all:unset. Mozilla also announced some new social integration options. In addition to all these changes, the Android version got some UI improvements and font readability upgrades. For a future release, Mozilla is currently testing a new approach for Firefox Sync in Nightly builds. They recognized the headaches involved with how it works, and they're now opting to use a simple e-mail and password combination like Google Chrome does. In the old system, users were forced to store an auto-generated authorization code, which, if lost, would render their bookmarks, passwords and browsing history inaccessible.

Asus stepped out this morning with something new for the Chrome OS powered hardware crowd, called a"Chromebox" small form factor PC. Just as Google has been evangelizing with its Chromebook notebook initiative, the pitch for these Chromebox systems is that they're capable of doing everything you need to do in today's connected world. While not everyone will totally agree with that marketing pitch — gaming, 3D modeling, and a host of specialized tasks are better suited for a PC with higher specs — there's certainly a market for these types of devices. They're low cost, fairly well equipped, and able to handle a wide variety of daily computing chores. There are two SKUs being released in the U.S. The first starts at $179 and sports an Intel Celeron 2955U processor, and the second features an Intel Core i3 4010U CPU (no mention of price just yet), both of which are based on Intel's 4th generation Haswell CPU architecture. Beyond the processor, these fan-less boxes come with two SO-DIMM memory slots with 2GB or 4GB of DDR3-1600 RAM, a 16GB SSD, a GbE LAN port, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 2-in-1 memory card reader, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, a DisplayPort, an audio jack, and a Kensington Lock. ASUS also includes a VESA mount kit with each Chromebox, and Google tosses in 100GB of Google Drive space free for two years.

Steam is to introduce a brand new bit of functionality – Steam Music.
It’s not a brand new store front selling music, however. Instead the functionality offers users the chance to integrate their music collection into their Steam library.
The key here is that gamers will be able to listen to their tunes while gaming without having to have a dedicated music player open in the background. Steam will integrate album art, too.
Those wishing to take part in the Steam music beta should join the Steam Music community group, with members then being invited into the program in waves prior to a full rollout.
