As promised, Dell has taken the wraps off its first Chrome OS device, theChromebook 11. The 11.6-inch, 2.9-pound laptop is built with the classroom in mind, and it should ship in tandem with a Wyse PocketCloud app that should make it easy for students and teachers to share their work online. Its 1.4GHz Celeron processor and 16GB solid-state drive are no great shakes, although the system could be the Chrome OS longevity champion -- Dell estimates a 10-hour battery life that could beat out Acer's long-lived C720. Educators who want the Chromebook 11 will have to be patient, though. A version with 4GB of RAM will ship to the US and UK in January. There will also be a 2GB model for cost-conscious schools, but Dell is only promising that it will launch sometime in the first quarter of 2014. Dell expects to sell at least one model under $300.

December 12th, 2013, 00:52 Posted By: wraggster
If you listen to everything the media has to say on the MMO genre then you’d be led to believe it’s in a state of decline. The vast majority of games in the space are now turning F2P while only the market leaders maintain their subscription models.
One example is EA’s blockbuster MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game launched with lofty expectations in December 2011 as the most expensive video game ever made. But post-launch and subscribers began to dip and soon fell below the 1m player mark, which prompted EA to roll out its F2P plan for the game just six-months into its lifespan.
This is just one example. But there are plenty of similar stories. Even the MMO darling World of Warcraft is in decline. But is the switch to F2P really the failure it has become perceived to be? Another example is publisher Trion Worlds and its MMO Rift.
“We’d been looking at alternate models possibilities for quite some time. For us it was less of a decision of if the model would be changing, and more a decision and plan around what and when would make the most sense,” says Scott Hartsman, CEO Trion Worlds.
Rift launched in March 2011 and by August had amassed a player base of 1m. But despite generating $100m in total revenue by January of the following year, Trion made the decision to take the game F2P six months later.
“It can be very risky, but the risks involved are largely ones that can be mitigated. You have to aim for something that can genuinely be perceived as being additive to the experience,” says Hartsman. “You have to develop a plan that fits the product’s design, customers’ expectations and that you can actually deliver.”
“That danger is very real. It’s where a lot
of the extra work and planning comes in.
For us, it was important to make sure that
existing customers’ loyalty was rewarded,
and that they viewed the addition of new
benefits and new users as positive.” Scott Hartsman, Trion Worlds
MMOs are no stranger to change as new content is typically introduced on a regular basis. But switching to an entirely new business model is a more drastic measure.
Hartsman warns that rocking the boat too much can cause trouble amongst the game’s existing fan base.
“That danger is very real. It’s where a lot of the extra work and planning comes in. For us, it was important to make sure that existing customers’ loyalty was rewarded, and that they viewed the addition of new benefits and new users as positive.”
Another free-to-play adoptee is NCsoft’s Aion. It was one of the biggest MMO releases in history. It also became the fastest selling PC game in the UK in 2009 and sold 470,000 copies across Europe.
But like so many of its rivals, Aion also made the switch at the start of last year as F2P specialist Gameforge took over distribution and publishing rights.
“Keeping players informed about the F2P switch was key as they are at the heart of the game,” says Rob Noble, UK and Nordics territory manager.
“The reception was extremely positive with many players glad that the VIP option offered them to keep a similar subscription experience and new players loved the possibility to try out the game for free.”
It’s only natural to wonder if these games would have survived if they had remained subscription-based.
“Not a chance,” says Hartsman. “A decade ago when MMOs were niche, players joined then to meet friends to play with online. Today, people play the games that they can easily play with their friends.
“Any barrier that stands in the way of that is a serious one and subscription is the biggest barrier of all.”

The betas for Valve's Steam Machines and Steam Controllers are getting shipped to their testers on Friday. This includes a select sample of 300 randomly selected Steam users. Unfortunately, all of these participants are in the US due to "regulatory hurdles.""This was not our original plan, and it means we can't collect beta feedback from Steam customers world-wide, which is pretty unfortunate," Valve lamented in its announcement. "All things considered, we're sure it was the right decision, because the alternative was to delay the whole beta beyond the point when we'd be able to incorporate any feedback into the 2014 products."Valve further noted that this domestic limitation would only be applicable to the prototype models and the final Steam Machines won't be affected by this. The SteamOS will be available when the Steam Machine prototypes ship. "It will be downloadable by individual users and commercial OEMs," Valve noted. "But unless you're an intrepid Linux hacker already, we're going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out."Those testing the Steam Machine prototypes will receive a special badge on their Steam Community profile and some games running natively on Steam OS will be added to their library. At least one of these is Metro: Last Light.

Sega's World War 2 strategy sequel, Company of Heroes 2, is receiving a couple of free maps, the Southern Fronts paid DLC, and Steam Workshop integration for its user-created maps made from World Builder today.Priced at £2.99 / €3.99 / $4.99, the Southern Fronts expansion features 10 challenges set in Russia and the Ukraine during early 1943's muddy season. As such, the sludge is a new environmental feature to contend with that will impact vehicle movement. For more details on Southern Fronts, here's the rundown courtesy of Sega:
- Solo Challenge: Spring Rasputitsa:Donbas Region, Ukraine, 1943 - the spring rasputitsa season has caught the German army off guard. They are poorly equipped to deal with the deep mud and are having trouble mobilizing. Lead an ambush on the German Panzer Division and destroy them before the support infantry can free them and they escape.
- Solo Challenge: Occupation: Dnieper River, Russia, 1943 - beginning their counteroffensive against the Red Army, the Wehrmacht makes their way along the Dnieper River. By capturing and taking control of an important Soviet stronghold, the Wehrmacht will be able to set up a fortified position against the Red Army and eliminate their remaining forces.
- AI Battle: Retreat to the Donets: Donets River, Ukraine, 1943 - after Operations Star and Gallop succeeded in pushing the Germans back to the Dnieper River, the Soviets found their advantage quickly collapsing as they again lost the cities of Kharkov and Belgorod. The Soviets must hold the bank of the Donets River against invading German forces on the ground and from the air.
- AI Battle: Panzer Crossing: Western outskirts of Kharkov, Ukraine, 1943 - the advancing German forces make their way into the outskirts of western Kharkov. The Red Army prepares to defend against the incoming German armor assault with the aid of anti-tank emplacements.
- AI Battle: No Retreat, No Surrender: Southwest of Kharkov, Ukraine, 1943 - the Soviets have suddenly found themselves on the defensive, with a reorganized German Army pushing back with renewed vigor and beginning to reclaim territory in the region around Kharkov. You must hold the line and halt the German Army's advance towards Kharkov.
- AI Battle: Breaking Lines: West Donbas Region, Ukraine, 1943 - the Red Army is pushing westwards with Operation Gallop. The German defenders are retreating to the Dnieper river. On the 19th of February, the Red Army broke through German lines and pushed towards Zaporizhia. Soviet forces must swiftly search out the remaining pockets of German defenders and destroy them.
- AI Battle: Storming the Donets: Donets River, Ukraine, 1943 - after retaking the city of Kharkov, the German Army pushed eastwards and reclaimed the surrounding area. The Red Army fell back, retreating to a position behind the Donets River. The Germans must attack the Soviet forces on the bank of the river and secure territory on the Donets before the Red Army can form a defensive line.
- AI Battle: Heavy Rain: West of Kharkov, Ukraine, 1943 - after being halted in a bloody battle against the Red Army's defenders, German forces have regrouped and prepare to use the cover of night to break through the enemies defenses and continue their assault into Kharkov.
- AI Battle: General Mud: Southwest of Kharkov, Ukraine, 1943 - the Germans had been driven back to the Dnieper River and were forced to regroup and reorganize. However, with the Red Army vastly overextended, the Wehrmacht seized the opportunity to launch a counterattack and regain the upper hand. With the return of Panzergrenadier Division Großdeutschland, push north through Soviet territory towards Kharkov.
- AI Battle: Kharkov Divide: North of Kharkov, Ukraine, 1943 - in their advance towards Kharkov, German forces are ordered towards the north in an attempt to eliminate the remaining pockets of Soviet resistance. The Wehrmacht has deployed their heavy armor to break through the Red Army's defenses in an effort to complete their encirclement.
As far as free content goes, the two new maps are Hill 331 and Don River.Elsewhere, the first Company of Heroes is getting new features on Steam, such as leaderboards and battle and arbitration servers.

An early version of Ronimo Games' Starstorm expansion for Awesomenauts will be available on Thursday. The developer earned $345,835 in September on Kickstarter to fund the expansion, which will feature five new characters and a map for the arena battler, in addition to a new spectator mode and replay system.
Thursday's expansion is the first of many updates for the game, and focuses on one of the five playable Starstorm characters, Ted McPain, "one of the great heroes of the first AI Wars." The pants-less character comes with a transformable weapon, which switches between a shotgun and a rapid-fire machine gun. The developer says that Thursday's early access DLC also includes the first set of custom game settings, including a new deathmatch game mode.
The full Starstorm expansion is expected to be be complete by the end of 2014, and Ronimo Games will continue to launch pieces of the DLC in multiple stages over the coming months.

DICE updated Battlefield 4 on PC this week to address a number of server and client crashing issues. The developer patched the game yesterday, addressing "one of the most frequently occurring client crashes" in addition to other bugs related to frame rate and collisions. The update rectifies one particular bug where players were able to be shot while behind cover and changing their characters' stance, as the transitions between poses would occasionally lead to a "multiple frame desync."
Among the other fixes introduced in this week's patch is the issue of grenades bouncing back from containers with open doors. Additionally, DICE fixed a bug that awarded teams a win in a round of Defuse mode by killing every attacker without disarming the bomb, providing it was disarmed in the previous round. The developer issued patches for Battlefield 4's PS4 and PS3 versions last weekfollowing EA's statement of commitment to fixing the game's numerous issues. DICE already patched up a one-hit-kill glitch in the game on both PS4 and PC.
Update: Additionally, DICE rolled out a Battlefield 4 issues tracker thread in its official forums. The forum post includes a rather large list of problems in the game, the platforms each issue affects and their statuses. The status sections include three levels: "investigating," "fixing" and "fix live." The developer noted that the issue tracker is not a comprehensive list of problems in the game, and that while it has always maintained such a tracker behind the scenes in its projects, this is the first time it opted to make it public.

... And yes, he kind of slams World of Warcraft with the NSA. Following reports that the US National Security Agency was monitoring potential terrorist activity in Second Life and WoW, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart hosted a real-life, in-game interview with Aasif Mandvi as Greychalk the dwarf paladin.
The joke focuses on Mandvi not realizing that some people lie about their identities online: "This place is all about trust," Mandvi says. "If we thought that people might not be who they say they are, the whole world would fall apart."
But hey, Jon Stewart, joke's on you – as a few viewers point out, Mandvi is in an impossible starting area for a dwarf, he has priest spells instead of paladin ones and he's dressed as a night elf rather than a dwarf. Take that. Watch the entire episode here and the WoW clip after the break.

Those enlisted in the war sandbox of Arma 3 have a shot at a real life victory - developer Bohemia Interactive has announced Make Arma Not War, a contest that will reward top-tier mod projects from a pool of €500,000. The revealing post also notes that mod projects which "show a lot of potential" could result in a contract offer from Bohemia, regardless of their standing in the contest's ranks.
Participants will compete in four categories: Total Modification, Singleplayer Game Mode, Multiplayer Game Mode and Addon. The event's keystone reward, a prize of €200,000, will be rewarded to the winner of the Total Modification category. The other categories will grant scaled awards depending on a contestant's placement - first place winners will rake in €50,000, second placers will get €30,000 and those in third will get €20,000. Ten finalists will be selected for most categories (20 for Singeplayer), with the victors being selected according to four equally-weighted attributes: Technical Quality, Originality, Experience and Presentation.
Applications won't be accepted until 2014, but Bohemia welcomes those interested to begin working on their project right now. Once you're done daydreaming about a future sack of money, you can also check in on the rules of entry. Submissions will be accepted up until October 28, with winners being announced on January 15, 2015.

It's been available for a bit to those willing to muck about with slightly-esoteric settings menus, but barring catastrophe, tomorrow should bring simple, one-click Twitch streaming functionality to the Minecraft masses.
As we reported when the feature made its testing debut, streaming inMinecraft is obscenely simple. Simply toggle the streaming option in the game, then whenever you're doing something neat that you just have to share with the world, tap the F6 key and suddenly you've got an online audience for your blocky shenanigans.
There is still no word on whether streaming functionality will come to the Linux version of Minecraft. "Currently, Twitch for Minecraft only supports Windows (Vista and later) and Mac OS X (10.8, 10.9)," the company previously told us. "Linux support is currently not planned due to licensing issues surrounding the encoding software."

PC gaming will only improve thanks to the competition from next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One, says Intel's European games enabling manager Richard Huddy.
Huddy was speaking at the YoYoTech desktop PC launch event where he discussed the bright future of PC gaming.
"PC gaming is not dead," he said. "And it's not going away. The Xbox 360 and PS3 sold over 70 million units each overall - but PCs sell that amount in a quarter.
"How does the Xbox One and PS4 influence PC gaming architecture? The consoles are only good for the PC - PC gaming will only benefit from them."
"Free-to-play will also be difficult for consoles." Huddy spoke about the success of free-to-play PC games like League of Legends, which has around 75 million users and has generated hundreds of million dollars in revenues. Plus, he talked about the opportunity for 4K gaming with PCs, which isn't currently a big focus for the next-gen console manufacturers.
"4K support is fundamental to everyone in the PC industry," he commented.
Huddy also praised YoYoTech's new range of gaming and high-end PCs.
"I'm a graphics guy and am delighted by these machines out here. YoYoTech dwarfs the horsepower of current next-gen consoles - serious respect to CK and his team," he added.
"PC games will look better and have higher quality. From a game developer's point of view, they love that the new consoles are essentially pcs. The differences are much smaller this time around.
"90 to 95 per cent of YoYoTech machines use Intel - and the i7 is the future of gaming."
Huddy mentioned that tablets are complimentary to PCs, and said there will always be sales of desktop PCs, but did admit that the free-to-play gaming boom is killing off sales of boxed PC games at retail.

Uber Entertainment, developer of real-time strategy game Planetary Annihilation, has stopped furiously clicking on a December launch window in favor of releasing the game "when it's done," an update to the game's website has revealed.
"Planetary Annihilation will launch when we feel confident about its level of polish and the amount of awesome we can jam into it," the statement reads. "We don't have a hard date moving forward. However, we do expect it to be feature-complete in early 2014."
The Kickstarter campaign for the project began back in August 2012 and harvested $2.2 million, outperforming the requested $900,000 by far. Planetary Annihilation's beta launched this month and is available to backers or those that purchase the $45 Warfare Edition (or above) of the game from Uber's store.

A leaked Intel roadmap for solid state storage technology suggests the company is pushing ahead with its plans to introduce new high-end drives based on cutting-edge NAND flash. It's significant for Intel to be adopting 20nm NAND in its highest-end data center products, because of the challenges smaller NAND nodes present in terms of data retention and reliability. Intel introduced 20nm NAND lower in the product stack over a year ago, but apparently has waited till now to bring 20nm to the highest end. Reportedly, next year, Intel will debut three new drive families — the SSD Pro 2500 Series (codenamed Temple Star), the DC P3500 Series (Pleasantdale) and the DC P3700 Series (Fultondale). The Temple Star family uses the M.2 and M.25 form factors, which are meant to replace the older mSATA form factor for ultrabooks and tablets. The M.2 standard allows more space on PCBs for actual NAND storage and can interface with PCIe, SATA, and USB 3.0-attached storage in the same design. The new high-end enterprise drives, meanwhile, will hit 2TB (up from 800GB), ship in 2.5" and add-in card form factors, and offer vastly improved performance. The current DC S3700 series offers 500MBps writes and 460MBps reads. The DC P3700 will increase this to 2800MBps read and 1700MBps writes. The primary difference between the DC P3500 and DC P3700 families appears to be that the P3700 family will use Intel's High Endurance Technology (HET) MLC, while the DC P3500 family sticks with traditional MLC.

PC manufacturer YoYoTech has announced a range of gaming PCs that it claims will rival Sony and Microsoft “in the battle for gamers’ hearts” in retail stores, including an £8,000 beast.
The XDNA Aurum 24K is priced at £7979.79 - the most expensive PC it has ever produced.
The company described the 24K as a computer created from “the most advanced liquid-cooled components available – hand-crafted within a gold-embossed chassis”.
The recently launched Warbird Colour range of gaming machines will also be part of YoYoTech's reseller programme, which aims to sell the PCs through retail websites and on the High Street.
The £599.99 Warbird M-Cube 1 includes a 23-inch display and 1TB hard drive, and is said by YoYoTech to be “far more powerful than Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PS4”.
A higher-spec model, the £799.99 Warbird M-Cube II, offers a faster processor, 27-inch display and 60GB solid state drive as well as the 1TB hard drive.
Both systems will include a copy of BioShock Infinite and are claimed to be “easily upgradable”.
“While consoles are aimed solely at putting a small, low-cost unit in your living room that can deliver gaming at HD resolutions, the most powerful PCs can drive massive frame rates at the highest possible image quality with resolutions up to four times better than traditional HD TVs,” said Ryan Pearton, business development manager at the company.
“At the moment, the PS4 and XboxOne will be able to offer a similar experience to a mid-range PC, but that won’t last.
“Serious gamers want everything set to ‘max’ to experience their games the way they are meant to be played. That experience is available through YoYoTech’s gaming PCs.”
Talking about the £8,000 24K, Pearton added: "The recession is over, game and simulator developers across the world are pushing through demanding new software and our customers want to enjoy the most advanced programs at blistering speed.
"During times of austerity, people choose functionality above all else. Once the dark clouds pass, aesthetics become much more important – and that's exactly what the YoYoTech Aurum series is about.”

Acer has released two new all-in-one desktop PCs priced €499 and €699 respectively.
The Acer Android AiO DA223HQL (€499) and Acer Aspire Z3-600 (pictured, prices at €699) are designed to offer users the same touch experience as with tablets and smartphones.
They both offer a built-in battery lasting up to two hours with WiFi on and video play, a lay-flat design letting users tilt the screen backward and a 10-point multi touch HD screen. Both are available now.
The Android OS provides over one million apps from the Google Market, which can be accessed across multiple Android devices under the same user account. The Acer Android AiO DA223HQL also allows the customisation of settings and apps for up to five users.
It can transmit smartphone content to a larger display, too, while the Windows 8 certification allows users to use this Android AiO desktop as a second Win8 Touch monitor.
The Aspire Z3-600 has a tilting touch screen size of 21.5-inch Full HD featuring 10-point multi-touch and gesture control. In addition, the ambient light sensor automatically optimises display lighting for the best view wherever users are, while the IPS wide viewing angles deliver the same vision from up to 170o.
It also features Dolby Home Theater and premium speakers developed by Harman Kardon.
Then there's Aspire Link, which provides HDMI-like connectivity through a USB 3.0 cable. This guarantees a faster file transfer when connecting a small-screen device to the Aspire Z3-600.
Acer recently launched a large-scale marketing campaign to promote its touch-screen devices.

Creative Assembly's Total War: Rome 2 has again added another historical group. This time around it's the Baktrians, and they're available as a free download.
For those who nodded off in history class, the Baktrians were a group living on the Eastern fringes of the Hellenistic states founded by those lesser rulers who followed Alexander the Great. As a result, the region quickly became an invaluable trade route between Europe and the Middle East, and Asian nations more closely located to the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This constant influx of economy (and thus culture) lead to an amazingly varied population, and the new Total War: Rome 2 DLC reportedly reflects this by offering "players a diverse battle experience ... blending units from the Greek rosters with those of Eastern cultures."
Being free, grabbing this DLC is simple. Fire up Steam and Valve's distribution platform should pull down the update automatically. While you wait, why not bone up on your history? Creative Assembly has crafted a solid backgroundpage on the Baktrians, and let's be honest, how many of you had ever heard the term before this article?
